How Yoga Helped Me Navigate Choppy Waters

“You are average, Melanie.” How could I be average? I had been practicing “hot yoga” for nearly five years when my husband of 32 years passed away. I started adding more days to my weekly practice to heal and meditate…to release anger and frustration…to handle the stress of separation and it worked. Was I really average?

I was 56 years old and I found that I fit the statistic of the average age of widowhood. I felt too young to be a widow and as my practice improved I knew that the door to a happy life was not closing. Yoga helped me see that the possibility of a healthy and full life was ahead of me and that there were no limits to my flexibility. Because each posture addresses so much of the “inner mind”, my adjustment to this new chapter was enhanced by a positive focus and a consistent practice.
After a few months of reflection, I decided to participate in my yoga teacher’s first Yoga Teacher Training along with sixty other yogis from around the world. While I was not the oldest, I was close to the oldest enrolled for five weeks of intense training, six days a week from 7am until 9pm or later. I did it…I completed my training and while I was not convinced that I would be teaching, I wanted to share my knowledge. With a body that was more toned than ever, I began sharing the message wherever I traveled. “Yoga can change your life!” became my theme song.

With meditation and concentration, I sent a message out to the universe that I wanted more than ever to “participate” in this new life; explore my new freedom and challenge my fears. The following year I attended yoga retreats in Brazil, North Carolina and Costa Rica and later Santorini, Greece. I took advanced yoga training and began to teach privately and as a substitute at my regular studio. I attended yoga conferences in Canada and Arizona and I supplemented my yoga training by visiting an assortment of yoga studios in California and New York. I was asked to teach at a Day School in Miami Beach and in preparation for that assignment I attended training for Kids Yoga in Italy along with 20 others. I was the only American!

Along with the yoga exploration I began sailing….I wanted to experience the taste of the sea and the mystery of its lure. After assorted sailing classes and day sails with a sailing club, I participated in my first ocean passage with 55 other sailboats from Virginia to the British Virgin Islands. Yes, I meditated and I relied on my Yoga to get through a major storm under very challenging circumstances for ten days on a 55 foot Schooner. Each day of the voyage I contemplated my position in the scheme of life…Peeling away at my personal layers of protection; I entered a place where fear and the unknown hold hands. It was a scary time. As the height of the waves increased and the speed of the wind mounted, my mind began to let go. I realized that my contribution to the globe was not as significant as my contribution to the three other members of the crew on the sailboat. Being present, being alert and aware of the moment to moment traverse across the body of water that seemed endless, was my focus. Taking care of the direction of my thoughts and my energy helped my crew and helped me to find a peaceful presence. There is a wonderful sense of freedom in the middle of the ocean. It is that exhilarating feeling of “anything can happen here” sense that draws the soul. Knowing how to ride the wave of anticipation and fear; adventure and the unknown take their place in your heart center and fill you up. What a sense of accomplishment when you finally reach land! There is just no feeling that can measure up to that first leap from the boat to the dock!

And once I hit the dock, I began to teach yoga on the beaches of the British Virgin Islands. With the crew members of over 50 yachts on the initial ocean passage, there were plenty of sailors ready to stretch out there bodies and feel the power of yoga under the intense sun and cloudless blue sky of the Caribbean. What a journey! And yoga has been a full passport to the adventure in my life.

While the loss of a loved one, and in my case my marriage partner, can and will leave one in a state of confusion, Yoga has opened the window to a new beginning. It works. In addition to the personal loss; I experienced a rearrangement of my life through tremendous damage to my home from three major hurricanes in the past two years. When I lost my office addition because of flooding from a broken water line as the result of a fallen tree, I turned the space outside into a meditation and butterfly garden and the space inside became a yoga studio. I use my studio as a place of meditation and personal practice. I have collected all my favorite yoga books and memorabilia from my retreats in that space. I know that when one door closes, another opens. I have survived great loss and received great reward…the yin and yang of life.

When I complete a practice with my students I always leave them with an affirmation. My favorite is…

No matter how dark the tunnel, it always leads to light.

How To Lower The Cost Of Your Home Insurance

While home insurance is a necessity it can be expensive. However, there are certain factors you can take into account which could help you make savings on your home insurance premiums.

Perhaps one of the biggest savings you can make when your policy comes up for renewal is by shopping around or get a specialist broker to investigate. Complacency is the biggest reason why people pay more for their insurance than they need to. Don’t just automatically renew your policy without first looking to see if you can get a cheaper deal. While this is the easiest option, it can also be the costliest.

Secondly, if you have access to the internet you will probably be able to make bigger savings by shopping and buying your home insurance online. By shopping online and using a brokerage you are able to get access to many more companies than you otherwise would.

The easiest way to lower your premiums are to make sure you answer honestly any questions relating to your current health, if you are a smoker or not and if you have burglar alarms and smoke alarms installed. With the latter, this can also save you money on your premiums.

The amount of excess you are willing to pay will also have an effect on your premium. The more excess you pay, the lower your premium can be. Other small considerations which you can make include joining a neighbourhood watch scheme and having good quality locks installed on your doors and windows.

Never be tempted to go for what seems like a great deal solely on the premium however, remember that the amount you are covered for also counts as does the type of policy you choose.

If you are looking for a kind of flooring that you is environmentally friendly then you should look no further than having bamboo flooring installed in your home. Not only is it one of the most beautiful natural woods available to choose from but it will not damage the environment. For many centuries now bamboo has been used by us (mankind) in many different ways and certainly in the last few years its popularity has increased. Not only can it be used for practical purposes such as for flooring but it is great for decorative purposes as all (bamboo screens etc.).

Unfortunately when ever you mention bamboo flooring people automatically think of the canes or round poles that you see Panda’s in the zoo chewing on. They think that it will be uncomfortable to walk on. Yet if the truth be told the bamboo flooring that is available today is as flat as any other kind of laminate or hardwood flooring that you can purchase. There have been great technological advances in the way in which bamboo stalks can now be turned into high quality very smooth flooring. These manufacturers are able to mass produce their bamboo flooring in order to meet the growing demand for this beautifully crafted and exceptionally hardwearing kind of floor covering.

As with all the other kinds of wooden flooring that is available the cane that makes up bamboo flooring is processed and machined so it comes in short laminate strips or planks or tiles. Once it has been produced it can be installed in a similar way to other similar types of flooring that you can buy. Plus should your bamboo flooring be properly installed then you will find that it lasts for many years to come because it is so tough and durable. However, as with any other type of hardwood or laminate flooring, bamboo flooring needs to be cared for in order for it to last.

There are many reasons as to why more people are looking at having bamboo flooring installed in to their homes not only is it environmentally friendly, it is strong and durable and what is unique about it is the color. Unlike hardwood bamboo flooring is resistant to moisture and so is less likely to expand or contract. Also unlike laminate flooring bamboo flooring does not need to be artificially colored and no dyes or finishes are made to the product so it is completely natural. So if you are looking for something just a little extra special for your home and which is environmentally friendly then why not consider having bamboo flooring installed.

Pergo Laminate Flooring is one of the giants in the laminate hardwood flooring industry. The floors are designed for home remodeling DIY enthusiasts, so questions related to installing laminate flooring abound. Pergo Laminate Flooring, Harmonics Laminate Flooring, Armstrong Laminate Flooring and similar products are pounced upon by gleeful, hand-rubbing first-time home remodelers. An average-sized floor can be ready to use and admire within a day - just imagine all the compliments from somewhat green-around-the-gills neighbors…

The days of battling to fit messy, sticky, glued laminate flooring are long gone thanks to ranges such as Pergo glueless laminate flooring planks. The unique tongue and groove designs of Pergo floors simply click together for a perfect finish. This is one of the most gratifying do it yourself jobs to tackle, as progress is measurable and the end result quite spectacular.

Is Installing Pergo Flooring Over Existing Floors Advisable?

The beauty of Pergo Laminate Flooring is that it can be laid directly over ceramic, vinyl, tiles or real wood floors, saving you the trouble of ripping out an old floor first. Make sure that the floor is clean, smooth and carefully sand down any bumps or peaked joints. Carpeting needs to be taken out however. It is always recommended to do fittings of cabinets or cupboards first, before tackling your flooring project. Real hardwood installed over a concrete sub-floor also needs to be removed before a Pergo Laminate Flooring installation.

Do I Need Expansion Room Around The Perimeter Of My Pergo Flooring Installation?

Pergo Laminate Flooring is a floating floor product, meaning that it isn’t permanently fixed to the sub-floor area. These ranges expand and contract due to changes in humidity and temperature. It is therefore vital to leave a 1/4″ expansion space between the flooring planks and the adjacent walls or cupboards. If you don’t do this, you will have unsightly buckling floors. The Pergo floor moldings are used to hide these spaces after installation and to ensure a professional finish. Use spacers to keep your distances even. If you are tackling a very large floor area, the expansion space needs to be increased.

Does Pergo Laminate Flooring Also Have A Hollow Sound When Used?

The sound depends largely on the sub-floor layer and the thickness of the laminate flooring installation. One way to get around this is to install a sound underlayment and resin polyethylene film underneath your Pergo Laminate Flooring planks. This is a highly effective technique to use if you want to dampen the sound. This protective layer also acts as a moisture barrier, lengthening the life of the flooring. Take a look at Pergo SilentStep foam or Soundbloc foam and Moisturbloc vapor barrier. By adding these a cushioning layer, you also ensure a more comfortable, soft floor underfoot. If the sub-floor is wood, a vapor barrier isn’t introduced before installing Pergo Laminate Flooring.

Can I Install Pergo Laminate Flooring Immediately After My Purchase?

To be on the safe side, acclimate your Pergo floor planks by leaving the cartons in the room where they will be installed, for a period of 49 to 96 hours. This precaution will give you a floor that remains clicked into place, rather than becoming an ugly buckling disaster area.

Can I Use Pergo Laminate Flooring In A Bathroom Or Kitchen?

Pergo Laminate Flooring’s surface is highly water resistant, so the planks can be used in high humidity areas such as bathrooms and kitchens. In these areas however, the expansion spaces need to be sealed with Pergo Sealant or a similar mildew-resistant silicone product before installing the trim or molding. The same should be done where the planks were cut to make room for cupboards or a dishwasher. Some experts also recommend sealing the joints by using glue. Check with your supplier about the most satisfactory installation process. In spite of its water resistance, Pergo Laminate Flooring are not made to handle standing water.

Can I Use Pergo Laminate Flooring On Stairs?

Pergo flooring is perfect for stairs. Steps are finished with Pergo Stair Nosing. The nosing is adhered with a quality construction adhesive and finishing screws. A stair application is the only time that the floating floor concept of Pergo is replaced with a glued end product.

How Do I Ensure A Professional Finish When Installing Pergo Laminate Flooring?

A large range of color-coordinated transition moldings are available to give an elegant and stylish finish to your flooring project. T-Moldings are used in doorways, while end moldings are used along sliding doors and around tubs and basins. If you need to go from a raised Pergo flooring area to a lower hard surface such as vinyl, you would choose a hard surface reducer.

Oops! I Have A Nick In My Pergo Laminate Flooring! What Now?

No problem. The folks at Pergo realized that this is an inevitable mishap in a bustling household. They therefore made sure that you have access to Pergo Finishing Putty. Simply neaten the edges of the chipped area with a small knife, make sure the area is clean, and fill the hole with putty. A spatula gives a neat finish and the excess is simply wiped away with a clean cloth. Plank replacements are also possible if a more major repair is needed.

With a gleaming Pergo Presto or Pergo American Cottage floor installation, your home will be transformed into a wrinkle-less, stylish lady. Pergo Laminate Flooring has been performing plastic surgery on properties for years. It’s about time to let that tattered carpet go…

Home Insurance Tips For Tenants

Until recently, finding home insurance if you are a tenant was extremely hard and even if you did find it you were expected to pay way over the odds for it. However, with the rise in the number of people choosing to rent rather than buy, home insurance for the tenant is now much easier to find and also fairer.

Certain companies have taken to specialising in insurance for those who rent and it can be a worthwhile investment when renting. Taking out a policy can insure you for the deposit you paid the landlord and also for any unforeseen events which could occur while you are a tenant.
It is imperative to shop around when looking for insurance and go to a specialist in tenant policies. If you don’t, then while you could get insurance, you may find yourself paying way over the odds. The area in which you are renting will be taken into account when taking out a policy so be sure to ask that your area is covered.

All companies will ask you how much you need to be insured for and when asked this you should remember that it is the contents of the home, not the property itself, that you will want to insure. So when taking this into account, tot up the value of everything in your home and don’t overlook anything.

Other considerations you should take into account when purchasing tenant insurance is for items such as the contents of your freezer. Expensive items like digital cameras, bicycles and a laptop computer should also be thought about. However these might not be included in a standard tenant’s policy so you should enquire as to exactly what and what is not covered in the policy. However if you are taking such items as a laptop computer out of the home this will require separate cover if stolen while off the property.

Usually a standard tenant’s policy will insure your possessions between £3,000 and £40,000. Up to 6 people living in one apartment will be covered under the same policy and coverage for items that are left in outbuildings and garages will usually be included in the premium, provided it can be proved reasonable force was used if they are stolen.

Home Insurance And Flooding

It is thought that over two million homes throughout the UK are at risk from flooding. This is due to many factors such as heavy rainfall or high tides due to bad weather, although flooding can also occur through other mishaps such as broken pipes.

While certain areas are affected more than others, for example those near the coast, it is important that you check that you have adequate protection against the ramifications of a flood. A recent survey showed that more than half of British people were inadequately covered against flooding. In 2006, 52% of people who were affected by floods found that they weren’t covered.

This having been said, those who live in high risk areas will of course have to pay a higher premium than those who live in a low risk area. You are considered to be in a high risk area if there is a greater than 1 in 75 chance and a low area if the risk is 1 in 200. This data is used by insurance companies and is taken from a flood map which was originally devised by the Environmental Agency. While those in the low and medium risk areas should be able to get flood insurance for a price, those who are considered to be in the top risk bracket could find it next to impossible to get flood insurance.

Homeowners who are at risk are of course expected to take every possible step towards minimizing flooding themselves. Special products can be bought to help minimize the risk and you could be asked to purchase these before a company will accept your application.

As with any type of insurance, it is essential for you to shop around as premiums can vary from company to company particularly if you are in a higher risk area. Shopping online and visiting a specialist brokerage will enable you to get as many quotes as possible for insurance which includes flood damage and you should always make sure what you are and are not covered for.

While you may not be at high risk of flood, some companies that use postcodes to asses the risk could deem that you are high risk and unfairly you might have to pay over the odds. However by shopping around you can access a company that uses a different method for assessing the risk and so get a lower price premium.

Every flue season you see the ads on the news. Get your flue vaccine. Of course kids going to school are vaccinated for all sorts of things, especially when they get into college and are surrounded by people from all over the world where vaccinations aren’t so common. And while nobody is suggesting that you don’t have these vaccinations, there are risks involved that you should be aware of. The purpose of this article is simply to point out some of those risks.

The first thing you need to understand is exactly how a vaccination works. What basically happens when your doctor gives you a vaccination, say for measles, is that they inject you either with a non infectious form of the bacteria or virus, or they inject you with a whole strain that has been weakened to the point where it can’t, in theory anyway, do you any harm. This is done to help build an immunity to the disease. In theory, this works great, most of the time. However, there are occasions where there are problems.

One of the risks is that in some cases, people who are vaccinated do not build the desired immunity. Of course there is no way to know this until they actually come in contact with the bacteria or virus. Where this becomes a problem is when somebody is being vaccinated specifically because they will be traveling to a part of the world where they know there is a very good chance that they will be exposed to the bacteria or virus in question, such as when missionaries travel to underdeveloped countries to do their work.

Another risk is that of side effects. Some people will either develop immunity to the bacteria or virus and have mild side effects, such as itching, rash and fever, while others will actually get the disease full blown. Now, in the case of something like measles, this isn’t the most dangerous thing in the world, but in the case of something like tuberculosis, which is highly contagious, this can be a real problem. And again, there is no way to know beforehand as everybody will have a different reaction to the vaccination.

The good news is, there is a law that states that parents must be given warnings about the risks of these vaccinations before they are administered. Each time their child is vaccinated, they are also given a vaccine statement to show record of the vaccination. Plus, there are laws in place to compensate those who suffer permanent damage because of the vaccination. While this does little more than just provide monetary support, it is at least something.

Make no mistake about it. There are risks to all vaccinations. But please don’t get the wrong idea. This article is in no way suggesting that you avoid these vaccinations, as some of them are required by law in order to be able to attend most institutions of learning. So be warned, be prepared, but don’t skip that flue shot.

It just may save your life one day.

To YOUR Health,

Steve Wagner

Mother,

It seems you’re gone. I don’t know quite what to say. You brought so much to our lives that I couldn’t even begin to explain….my oldest friend of 37 years.

From the time I was old enough to know who you were I felt safe. After dad left, you struggled as a single mom in the 70s for 10 years until you eventually remarried (because I needed a father), only to have your heart broken yet again… but you had integrity. No matter what was going on, you always did the right thing.

It must have been so hard, to watch your kids making so many bad decisions over the years.

Thank you for your prayers.

You never gave up on us or yourself. You went to college, got your degree and enjoyed a wonderful career as a nurse. Finally you married a pastor and finished out your lives together serving the LORD. Through many trials and what sometimes seemed like endless suffering, you hung in there. The both of you, used mightily of God…until the wreck.

In one day, in less than an hour…you were dead. We will miss you both terribly but Mom…

I had to write you, to tell you, what a wonderful experience it has been to know you. You’re the strongest person that I’ve known in my entire life. Consistent, like a rock you never flinched. You always lived up to your own standards…I am so humbled.

You taught me about honesty and all the things in life that really matter. You were at every game. I will never forget you. Our relationship has always been very special to me. I cherish the many, many fond memories and am grateful for your portion in my life.

You were graceful, charming, lovely, funny, caring, compassionate, forgiving, patient, all the things a mom “should” be. Thank you so very much.

Emma, Crystal, Paul jr. & Caleb send their love.

P.S.

You and my Emma, who you so lovingly took under your wing, are the best Moms I’ve ever known. I imagine that won’t change… love sonny boy.

Don’t be surprised when I tell you that women fantasize just like men. They not be as open about it or they keep it to themselves in fear of embarrassment. In this two part article I will discuss some of the top fantasies of a woman. This article is not intended to go back to your mate with and say see I know you want to do this. You should never push your partner to reveal their fantasies because they are theirs and if they want to include you they will. Fantasy can be a great tool in the bedroom to spice up a sex life.

1.- Two Women
This should be no surprise. Its public knowledge that women can be better at pleasing other women than men. This isn’t a knock towards men. The nice thing about this fantasy is that the man is usually a willing partner. However you have to be careful because adding another woman can spring up some jealousies later.

2.- The Oldest Trade In History
Women quite often like to pretend they are prostitutes. With this fantasy you should role-play the entire scenario. You should ask how much, pick her up, and after everything is said and done you should pay her and since she’s your real life partner it wouldn’t hurt to give a nice tip.

3.- Three Way
Probably one of women’s biggest fantasies is having two men in bed with her. This one is tough on guys but it can be very rewarding for a relationship. A woman loves to have two guys pleasuring her the way that only guys can. Once again though if you are in any way insecure about your relationship then this might not be the one you want to pursue.

4.- She’s The Man
Most guys would say absolutely not to this one but for the few that do give in they are doing a wonderful thing for their partner. A girl likes to use a strap on with their partner. It makes them feel like they are in control. There are some women out there who want the power and this is definitely a way to give it to them.

These are only meant to be tips. There has to be two willing partners. The right fantasy can do wonders to spice up your sex life. But guys I also want you to remember there is nothing that turns a girl on more than good old fashioned love making.

This is the end of my last article entitled What Do Women Like. While these are fantasies that women like to get involved in at times remember most of the time it is just fantasy. They use the scenarios to heighten their orgasms. So be careful to never push your partner into something they really don’t want to do.

The American College of Rheumatology reports that between three [3] million and six [6] million Americans are affected by fibromyalgia and that while it occurs primarily in women of child-bearing age, children, men and the elderly can also be affected.

While widespread musculoskeletal pain and fatigue are major symptoms of the chronic disorder fibromyalgia, it is also characterized by multiple ‘tender points’. The term ‘tender points’ refers to tenderness which occurs in precise, localized areas of the body - particularly in the spine, the hips, and in the neck and shoulders. Many sufferers also experience significant sleep disturbances and morning stiffness. Other symptoms associated with fibromyalgia may also be irritable bowel syndrome as well as general anxiety.

There are a number of theories about what causes - or what triggers - fibromyalgia but there is no definitive understanding as yet of the major cause. Some investigators believe that it may be caused by a physical injury or trauma which has some effect on the nervous system. This could be the initiator of decreases in blood flow which in turn lead to changes in muscle metabolism, thus causing the fatigue and decreased strength symptomatic of fibromyalgia. Other researchers believe the disorder may be triggered in some susceptible people by an infection such as a virus but to date no such infectious agent has been identified.

Because many of the symptoms are similar to, or even identical with, some symptoms of other disorders, fibromyalgia proves difficult to diagnose. Often a doctor may have to monitor the patient’s medical history for some time and then may be in a position to make a diagnosis of fibromyalgia based on a history of persistent widespread pain over a period of at least three months.

A set of criteria to assist physicians with the diagnosis of fibromyalgia has been developed by the American College of Rheumatology. These criteria advise that a patient is considered to be suffering with fibromyalgia if they have ‘persistent widespread pain in combination with tenderness in at least 11 of 18 specific tender point sites’.
