Teachers - Job Stress Reduction

Teachers, job stress reduction is important to your health. You know that. Your physical bodies, emotions, minds, and spirits are all involved in school work. Even on holiday, you may find yourself working, or at least thinking about your work.

Such dedication need not be negative. A teacher should, above all, be a person who wants to make a big difference in students’ lives. The challenge is to make that difference without permitting stress to drive you out of teaching. The challenge is to practice good stress reduction techniques.

Understanding Stress Reduction

An understanding of stress reduction must begin with an understanding of stress. Stress is not that stack of un-graded papers. Stress is not the child who insists on asking endless questions, no matter how well you explain. Stress is not a matter of two teenagers leaping into the aisle to fight, while the rest of the class chants, “Fight, fight, fight.” Stress is not the parent who calls repeatedly to complain that you are not doing what is best for her child. Stress is not even the principal inviting you to the office for a job review conference.

All of the above are stressors, not stress.

Stressor Defined

A stressor is a stimulus that causes stress. The illustrations above are of stressors. When Job broke that expensive science equipment, his action was a stressor. When Betty brought her father’s spearfish for show-n-tell - and stabbed it into your right arm - that was a stressor. They were stimuli that caused stress. They themselves were not stress, but they stimulated stress.

Stress Defined

Stress is your RESPONSE to the above examples. “Good stress” or “bad stress” is produced dependent on your response. Which calls for job stress reduction?

On the one hand, you respond negatively in fight-or-flight mode. Adrenalin floods your body and muscles tense. Blood is shunted from extremities to core organs. All systems are “go” for fleeing or fighting the enemy.

On the other hand, you respond positively by becoming excited and challenged. Endorphins power happy determination to move ahead. You are flooded with a feeling of euphoria, ready to make the best of the stressor.

Stress, negative or positive, is your response to stressors.

We continue with a brief look at the two kinds of stress.

Eustress - Beneficial, Good Stress

Teachers, job stress reduction programs are unnecessary when the stress involved is eustress. Eustress is an appropriate, positive response to the stressors teachers meet. “Eu” means “good” in Greek. Picture joy and laughter. Eustress is pleasant, healing stress.

Eustress may appear to be an emotional, mental, spiritual, or physical overload, but it does not drain away power. It energizes you; helps you handle the overload. Teachers’ job stress reduction programs should begin with a presentation of eustress and the benefits it offers.

Distress - Detrimental, Bad Stress

Most teachers’ job stress reduction programs focus only on distress. Distress is an inappropriate, negative response to the stressors of a teacher’s job. “Di” means “two” in Greek. Picture double trouble coming your way. Distress is often a disabling, crippling stress.

Distress, like eustress may appear to be an emotional, mental, spiritual, or physical overload. Unlike eustress, distress drains power for anything other than fight or flight. Distress tires you; freezes the brain, and makes it difficult to handle the overload. Teachers’ job stress reduction programs should include a presentation of distress and the detrimental effects it carries.

Employ Stress Augmentation!

Paradoxically, teachers, job stress reduction can be as simple as job stress augmentation. You need to augment, or increase, eustress on the job.

Remembering that stress is nothing more than your response to the demands placed upon you, recognize that you have control over job stress. You may choose to respond positively or negatively; with eustress or with distress.

Look at the following two examples.

1. You face a huge stack of un-graded papers at the end of the day.

A distress response is to sigh, and take “flight” down the hall for another mug of stale coffee and some small talk. Eventually, you plod back to the classroom, “flight” still written clearly on every part of your body. You sit down forlornly, and gaze dejectedly at the clock. Your shoulders slump as you reach for the first paper. You wish for job stress reduction, unconsciously defining it as a magic wand that will make the papers go away. That does not happen, of course, and you begin to reap the detrimental effects of distress.

A eustress response is to smile, allot 2 hours to finish the work, and divide the stack into 8 stacks. Now you have bite-sized work piles. You set a goal of completing each stack in no more than 15 minutes - less if responsibly possible. Promising yourself a cup of coffee after the first hour, you tackle the first stack, eager to meet or beat you goal. Augmenting eustress, you enjoy job stress reduction and all of its healthy benefits.

2. Betty insists on asking endless questions, no matter how well you explain.

A distress response is to “fight” with Betty, stress reduction hopes shattered. You feel neck and shoulders muscles tighten. A frown yanks your mouth downward as you approach Betty’s seat. Unconsciously, you clench your fist. You will not permit Betty to demand so much attention, and you make that very clear in sharp, “fighting” tones. Betty cowers into silence, and you begin to reap the detrimental effects of distress.

A eustress response is to smile quietly, and see Betty as one reason you decided on a teaching career. You want to teach Betty stress reduction along with proper listening techniques. You wait for a time when the rest of the class is occupied, and then go quietly to Betty’s desk. Smiling, you take Betty’s hand and lead her gently into a quiet, private part of the room. Relaxed and happy, you set a goal with Betty. You and she will work together to help her listen in such a way that she needs fewer questions. As she learns to control her response to the stressor of listening, she can win small rewards along the way. By the time Betty returns to her desk, you both are happy. Augmenting eustress, you enjoy job stress reduction again.

Tip: Teachers, job stress reduction is a choice. No elaborate stress reduction program is necessary if you have the backbone to commit to augmenting eustress and refusing to engage in distress.

Choosing the Correct Words and Phrases for Your Article or Newsletter

Not only do you have to choose outstanding keywords when you are writing for success on the Internet, but you also must take care with the usual, but necessary words and phrases you use. Too often inappropriate or, worse, incorrect words are used. When you are trying to convey an idea or thought, nothing could be worse than choosing a word or phrase that doesn’t mean what you intended it to mean.

It is so easy in this day and age of “faster is better” to use “then” vs. “than” or “their” vs. there” by mistake, but that’s where taking care to proofread your work comes in as well as knowing the difference between the two. Sometimes, however, it goes further than that. What I am about to describe is something akin to learning the lyrics to a song by listening to it over and over again. Your ear hears something different than what the actual word is and until you see the lyrics in writing, you cannot equate the two. It’s usually a big surprise when you see the lyrics in print because they are nothing like what you are belting out in your car sing along.

For example, the phrase “for all intents and purposes” is continually written out as “intensive purposes”, which is exactly how it sounds, but is incorrect. The word “lose” is forever mixed up with the word “loose.” These are two totally different words with totally different meanings separated by one vowel. I also hear the phrase “so to speak” as “sorta speak.” Using “supposed to” usually turns into “suppose to,” “supposedly” becomes “supposably” and “with regard to” turns into “in regards to.”

Please also remember to carefully check when you type the word “your.” Many times because of a light touch on the keyboard, the “r” gets left off of the end.

An attorney I recently had a conversation with about this very subject, mentioned to me that he actually knew colleagues that made words up, such as “satisfacation” (which I assume should have been “satisfaction”). That led us to a discussion of the popular court term “moot” which is always confused with “mute”, again two totally different words with different meanings. I even remember seeing the words “caliber” and “caliper” interchangeably used.

The point in all this is to make your work look and read as professional as possible. There is nothing worse than incorrect word usage or bungled phraseology to discourage your readers from coming back because it puts your credibility as a writer at risk. There are many websites that point out the many word usage problems that creep up again and again. A simple search can save your reputation.

According to research, the average normal male has several erections every night. Even at age 65 years old, the penis is erect for an hour and a half each night. Yet, as a rule, older men and women tend to have more inhibitions about sex because of their backgrounds and society’s reaction towards them. Having been taught in their childhood that sex, and anything related to it is ‘dirty’, and that one never talks openly about it, sexually active older people tend to have problems of adjustment. Having been expected to be strong and self-reliant when they were young, older men, in particular, do not easily talk about, or admit to, personal problems, especially those of a sexual nature.

An impotent man was not regarded as a ‘real’ man back then, so most of these men tend not to acknowledge worries and fears to their partners. They simply try to handle everything on their own, or pretend they do not need sex anymore, thus increasing their feeling of frustration and loneliness. Now they have Viagra, if there is a real problem, but there is still the hurdle to own up to needing it in the first place! Additionally, being treated as invisible by society, as though they have no right to sex once they are past their prime, does not exactly encourage older people to be natural about sex and appreciate its value. For these and other reasons, sex gradually becomes a subject that is simply understood between many older couples rather than overtly mentioned or even practised!

For the older woman, when she feels that she might not be able to satisfy her more sexually active partner, she might switch off altogether to avoid that anxiety or being regarded as ‘useless’ in bed. A consequence of the reticence on both sides, and the lack of communication, is a lack of intimacy in the relationship, often with one partner feeling ‘left out’ of their spouse’s life. Men often miss out on what they need because they don’t know how to ask for it, or they live in denial about it.

Sexual Dysfunction

Sex under these restrictive conditions creates distance or sexual dysfunction in the relationship, when each really wants the closeness and intimacy of other couples. This can drive an even deeper wedge between them. Consequently, sex is likely to become mechanical, unfeeling, unfulfilling or non-existent. Fortunately, anyone can break this vicious cycle and restore intimacy and sexual flow if they wish to do so, but it obviously takes two to achieve this.

For older couples it seems that comfort, more than anxiety, obstructs sexual passion. For example, about 12 per cent of older couples claim to have sex only “a few times a year” because of all the factors mentioned earlier. Yet, though comfort is necessary to all relationships, especially to affirm and sustain partners with familiarity and predictability, sex is equally important to cement that closeness. While long-term partners who stay friends have an ease in comfort which complements each other’s growth, staying exclusively in your personal comfort zone stifles sexual energy.

Anxiety about sexual performance may cause its own fears, but managing it can actually fuel growth because a little bit of stress is great for keeping us feeling alive instead of being very dead! Relationships without anxiety allow blandness to consume intimacy. According to Dr Jeanne Shaw, “Being deeply sexual over time with your life partner produces both joy and anxiety. But, a ‘no-growth’ agreement prevails when partners avoid tension, discomfort and knowing each other. The cost of rigidly maintaining comfort is the sacrifice of sexual energy,” as well as an awful lot of joy.

Reverse mortgages are an option for borrowing money based on home equity. They were introduced in 1989 and are mainly used by senior citizens. Reverse mortgages pay the homeowner in monthly lump sums for their home equity. It is quite different than any other mortgage option.

Reverse mortgages are a great way to cash out on the equity on your home and to increase income. Under a reverse mortgage the homeowner is paid every month and when they decide to sell the house or pass away the lender then becomes the owner of the house unless their heirs pay off the mortgage. If they sell the house they can repay the mortgage that way, too.

Reverse mortgages do not pay out the entire amount of a homes worth. They usually pay between 30 and 80% of the homes value. They also must pay closing costs and service fess which are due monthly.

The details of a reverse mortgage are sometimes hard to understand. A reverse mortgage can be set up so a borrower gets a pay out every month or they can just get money whenever they need it. The government regulates these loans and requires that borrowers receive credit counselling to ensure they understand the reverse mortgage and everything it entails.

Reverse mortgages come with conditions that must be met in order to qualify. The conditions include that the person must be living in the house, they can not borrow more than the appraised value of the home and the older the homeowner, the more money they can get.

Additionally, with a reverse mortgage the borrower still maintains ownership of their home and are still responsible for the taxes and insurance, they will never be in debt because the loan is never worth more than their home is and the reverse mortgage must be paid as soon as the borrower no longer lives there.

Senior citizens often use reverse mortgages as a way to supplement their income. They may be facing rising living costs with a drop in income and suddenly need more money just to make it each month. This puts the senior citizen in desperate need for money. This is why reverse mortgages are regulated so much.

The government tries to protect older people from getting scammed b companies who are looking to use a reverse mortgage as a way to make money. These scams usually involve higher than average fees and conditions that are not typical. A reverse mortgage can be a great way for a senior to supplement their income, but they need to make sure they completely understand any deal before signing it.

Reverse mortgages when done the correct way can be costly still, but they should never put the homeowner is serious debt as the loan will be repaid with the lender taking the house upon the person not living there anymore. These loans are not a way to get into debt and if a reverse mortgage is set up so that is ever the case then it is likely a scam.

One of the extraordinary geological sites on earth, the City of Rocks National Reserve, remains one of Idaho’s major attractions. The reserve, managed by the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation under a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service, encompasses 14,407 acres of south central Idaho just north of the Idaho/Nevada border. About one-quarter of the acreage is privately owned. Established as a National Reserve in 1988, the site is known for its scenic, geological and historic significance.

The “rocks” that give this extensive area its name are granite rock formations dating back as far as 2.5 billion years, making them some of the oldest formations found in the United States. This is not just a bunch of rocks. There are scores of granite columns reaching up to 60 stories tall, looming dramatically above a sagebrush-covered basin that features the backdrop of the colorful Albion Mountains.

The granite outcroppings have been shaped through the years by wind and weathering. Some visitors see faces, buildings and animal shapes in the rocks. What they see is limited to their imaginations.

City of Rocks was an important landmark for those pioneers traveling west on the famed California Trail. Pioneer diaries from 1843 described the rocks in detail as “a city of tall spires”, “steeple rocks”, and a display of “all manner of fantastic shapes”. Be sure to take a walk to see inscriptions on the spires written in axle grease by travelers passing through on the California Trail.

The rock formations are adjacent to lush mountain meadows and pinion-juniper and mountain mahogany tree stands. Arrowleaf Balsamroot and other wildflowers are present beginning in the spring and lasting through late fall. Recreational opportunities include hiking, backpacking, wildlife viewing, photography, horseback riding, mountain biking, and picnicking. Nordic skiing and snowshoeing are popular during the winter months.

Rock climbing is the favorite activity. City of Rocks in one of the finest granite-face climbing sites anywhere in the world. Some 700 climbing routes have been developed. One hundred to 300-foot rock spires provide most of the climbing opportunities, but spires up to 600 feet high are available for the more skilled adventurers. Privately published climbing guides are available for sale at the Reserve headquarters and at the City of Rocks Visitor Center located nearby in the small town of Almo.

One of Idaho’s many scenic routes, the 49-mile long City of Rocks Back Country Byway passes the site. This Scenic Byway begins at the little town of Albion on Idaho State Route 77. Heading south, the Byway passes the Pomerelle Ski Area and the Lake Cleveland Recreation Area. The route passes through the small communities of Elba and Almo before reaching the City of Rocks National Reserve.

From the Reserve, the Byway follows Birch Creek to the city of Oakley, where it meets up with Idaho State Route 27. The entire town of Oakley is on the National Register of Historic Places. The town features Idaho’s largest concentration of old wood-framed and stone buildings. This Byway drive takes about 1.5 hours and makes a great combination experience with additional time spent at the City of Rocks Reserve.

Primitive camping is available at Howell Canyon and City of Rocks. R.V. parks are available in Oakley and north of City of Rocks at the Interstate Route 84 Interchange on the Snake River.

On a visit to Idaho, make sure to include a visit to City of Rocks National Reserve. Don’t forget the camera!

The Egyptian Mau - Small Cat With a Big History

If there is any sort of valid claim to being the cat of ancient Egypt and the Pharaohs it must go to the Mau. After all, the word “mau” means cat. What better credentials could a fantastic feline have?

Well, what if the particular breed of cat can be clearly seen in ancient Egyptian artwork? Even better, what if Hollywood itself has given its stamp of authenticity to the breed? In the 2004 movie, “Catwoman”, Halle Berry’s character, Patience Phillips, is killed, but is brought back to life by a Mau named “Midnight”, which was actually played by three different cats. It’s not surprising that they turned out to be movie stars, however, because they are known for not only their striking appearance, but for their personality and charisma as well.

When you go as far back into history as the Egyptian Mau, you are bound to come in contact with some wilder, less refined ancestors. The Mau is directly descended from wild African spotted cats. These ancestors were domesticated, by the ancient Egyptians and may be, as some believe, the starting point for all modern breeds of domesticated felines, from the pretty Persian kitty to those backyard balladeers…the alley cats.

Though many years removed from its ancestral strain, the Mau has retained the spots which are one of its trademarks. In fact the spots are even more a part of the Mau than just a hair color. Its skin is actually spotted as well! Another note on spots is that this cat breed is the only naturally spotted breed. All other known spotted cats have been bred to produce the spots in their fur.

The Mau is a smallish cat, only weighing in the vicinity of five to about eleven pounds. However, don’t let its size fool you. It still has the graceful hunter’s moves of its wild ancestors. It is also one of the fastest breeds of domesticated cats, and a natural design in the skin which allows its long hind legs to take longer strides than other cats is the same feature found in another cat relative…the cheetah. This small pet cat has been clocked at 30 MPH! Even with its small size, however, the Mau possesses a working cat’s muscles in an overall sleek package that is topped, or bottomed, off by a graceful tail which may be as much as two thirds of its total length.

A feature that particularly endears this breed to me is that it tends to chuckle or chortle when happy, rather than mewling. It also becomes quite animated when happy and expresses its pleasure with rapid tail movements and kneading with the feet while chuckling to itself.

The Mau is a great family cat. It is friendly but protective, and is devoted to its family. A possible drawback here is that they tend to like a lot of one-on-one companionship and plenty of play. In the absence of a stay-at-home human, they are graciously willing to play instead with other cat friends. So, if you cannot be at home as often as your Mau would like, you may have to get him or her a pet!

Living with the Mau is the least of your problems, however. A Mau does not come cheap, with one site I visited quoting a starting price of $400, and it goes up from there, of course. The other issue is the scarcity of the breed. They are a popular breed with a limited supply, so you may be on a waiting list for some time.

While any old Mau may come in several shades and variations of colors, the Cat Fanciers’ Association recognizes three acceptable colors for show - silver, bronze, and smoke. Cats of other colors, such as black, blue-silver, blue spotted, blue smoke, and solid blue, are still one hundred percent Mau, although they are not recognized for show.

If you want a cheerful, playful family cat that can give you a taste of history, and a touch of the wild, you might just be looking for an Egyptian Mau.

Card Sorting - An Easy Method to Create Your Information Architecture

Many of our clients ask us what method we use in determining the best information architecture for their users. One effective and easy way to accomplish this is by using a technique called card sorting. The beauty of this technique is that you don’t need an Information Architect in order to do it and it’s effective in understanding how users categorize information.

To perform a card sorting exercise, grab a bunch of index cards and write each section of the site on a card. For example, Home, About Us, Contact Us, Services, Careers, Products, etc. Make sure that you capture every section that you want to have on the site. This process often helps you discover what sections you need.

The next step is to put the cards in piles of subjects you think belong together. You might group together About Us, History, Executive Bios, and Board of Directors sections. Once you’ve done this, record what sections go in which pile. Just make a list of each section.

If your site is complicated and deep, and you are concerned about href="http://fusionbox.com/service/11/">usability, it makes sense to go through this process with different user types. Get volunteers from your company to create their own piles of content. This often reveals that users might expect a certain section to appear in a place that you did not previously think of. That’s okay. In fact, that’s good. You are not going to accommodate everyone’s expectations, but you will start seeing patterns in the way different user types organize content. You may also discover that some content sections belong in two categories. You can also treat these kinds of expectations by using cross links.

Sometimes you will find that you have sections that don’t seem to fit into any pile. Sometimes these oddball categories suggest an important user path. When that is the case, use a call to action directly on your homepage (above the fold, of course, or consistently across your site.

Your href="http://fusionbox.com/service/">information architecture, while it should be intuitive, is not going to account for every way a user will get to the information they need. You need to consider many paths to the same information whether it’s by using internal links, calls to action, or a search tool. The most important aspect of information architecture is to make sure that users can get to the information they want easily. You’ll also want to direct them to the information that you want them to see. This is called key user paths. Whenever you can, make sure that your key user paths consist of three clicks or less.

This simple exercise can reveal patterns of user preferences that you may not have considered– especially if you are really close to the project. Card sorting is easy to do, doesn’t take much time, and reveals a lot about key user paths and expectations. Perform this exercise and no one will even notice your information architecture, or forbid the worst, have to learn how to move through you’ll site. The benefits of this are better usability which, in the end, means more sales, leads, or user loyalty for you.
