List Building Basics - Basics of List Building in Internet Marketing I

List building is an essential part of any successful internet marketing campaign. While it is possible to sell online without it, your campaign could never be really successful without you learning at least the basics of list building.

At the very least you will need an opt-in form on your home page, though many have one on all of their web pages. You must keep in mind that nobody is going to give you their email address unless you provide them with an incentive. A free newsletter is quite common, as is an email course over a few days or weeks, or you can simply offer some ebooks free. Whatever it is that you have to offer, it must be relevant to your website and something that has tangible worth or value to the visitor.

You should bring your visitor’s attention to the form, and the fact that they will benefit by registering for the offer, whatever it is. It is best not to use the term ‘subscribe’ since many internet users associate the word subscribe with regular payments for something. The opt-in buttons supplied with some forms has the text ‘subscribe’ on them, and you should change this where possible with something like ‘count me in’ or ‘OK’. It’s just a minor point, but one that could lose you the odd email address now and again.

The most important aspect of building your list is the content of your site. The better the content the more you show yourself to be an expert on the subject of your site. The quality of the website is just as important as the opt-in form itself in persuading a visitor to give their address in return for more information from you. The more content you have, the more likely you are to secure that valued email address
