The word “LASER” stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A laser is an optical light source that emits a concentrated beam of photons. Lasers are usually monochromatic - the light that shoots out is usually one wavelength and color, and is in a narrow beam.

A very neat addition to the experiments below is a fog machine. (Rent one from your local party supply store.) Turn it on, be sure you have good ventilation, darken the lights, and turn on the lasers for an outstanding laser experience!

A quick note about lasers: keychain lasers from the dollar store work just fine with these projects. Do not use the green lasers sold in astronomy stores - they are too dangerous for the eyes.

Plastic Bottle Beam: Fill up a plastic water or clean soda bottle with water and add a sprinkle of cornstarch. Turn down the lights and turn up the laser, aiming the beam through the bottle. Do you see the original beam in the bottle? Can you find the reflection beam and the pass-through beam?

Light Bulb Laser: In the dark, aim your laser at a frosted incandescent light bulb. The bulb will glow and have several internal reflections! What other types of light bulbs work well?

CDs: Shine your beam over the surface of an old CD or DVD. Does it work better with a scratched or smoother surface? You should see between 5-13 reflections off the surface of the CD, depending on where you shine it and how good your “seeing” conditions are.

Glass and Crystal: Pass the laser beam through several cut-crystal objects such as wine glasses or clear glass vases. Is there a difference between clear plastic or glass, smooth or multi-faceted? Try an ice cube, both frosted and wet.

Lenses: If you have an old pair of eyeglasses, pop out the lenses and try one or both in the beam to see the various effects. Try one lens, and then try two in line with each other to see if you can change the beam. If you have polarizer filters, use two. You can substitute two sunglass lenses - no need to pop out the lenses - you can just use two pairs of sunglasses. Just make sure they are polarized lenses (most UV sunglasses are). Place both lenses in the beam and rotate one 90 degrees. The lenses should block the light completely in one configuration and allow it to pass-through the other way.

First, your prospect would have been led to one your golf pages, presumably one relevant to the golf swing. That would have to be relevant to the content of your page, or they would just have quick look, decide that what you are offering is not what they expected to see, and click away. Your opt-in form would probably be at the side or bottom of the page with wording such as “sign the form below to receive a 7 part course on how to improve your swing”.

They will probably glance at that just before clicking the navigation button to take them away. The squeeze page is mush more effective since it focuses on the benefit immediately without any other content, articles or offers to distract them.

You must use a squeeze page to build a list because, not only does it dramatically increase the opt-in rate, but it also helps to sell your product.

Effective meetings cause enough woes to warrant being banned. And some business have successfully done this for the duration of their tenure before disappearing into bankruptcy.

Besides the problems cited in the previous articles (Bad News About Effective Meetings), you will have to contend with:

Problem #4: Others may succeed.

This is completely unacceptable in a competitive workplace. Everyone knows that their next promotion depends upon trashing their competition. And so, in a bad meeting the attendees make sure that no one accomplishes anything of merit. That way, top management has to award promotions based on one’s ability to appear productive. This is much easier to achieve than being productive.

Benefit: Bad meetings guarantee jobs for people whose poor work skills make them unemployable. This relieves public agencies of having to use tax revenues for welfare.

Rebuttal: Success is a team effort. And thus, effective leaders help everyone succeed.

Problem #5: You lose control.

No one knows what the results will be in an effective meeting. So, you have to endure the uncertain chaos of exploring different possibilities. You have to hope that absurd ideas are rejected. And you have to wait for decisions to be made by compromise and consensus. People who want absolute control prevent this by doing all of the talking or by telling everyone what to do.

Benefit: Bullies easily succeed in an environment that fosters bad meetings. Then they can make sure that less competent drones are promoted, thereby guaranteeing their control over everything.

Rebuttal: Wise leaders know that the best results are found by exploring different options. They manage this process with guiding questions and a structure that helps people think freely.

Problem #6: Your business might improve.

Nothing scares executives more than the thought of having to repeat (or even worse: surpass) superior results. Bad meetings provide the comfort of knowing that business will stay the same (or even become worse). Then executives can make grand proclamations about their strategies for improving the business. And everyone respects a leader with vision, even if it’s the same old vision (e.g., earn a profit next year).

Benefit: Bad meetings help executives avoid escalating expectations by producing predictable and reproducible results - i.e, none. They are also able to reuse promises for improved performance.

Rebuttal: Businesses that earn a profit provide security for all, including the executives. And if the board decides to replace a successful executive, a history of success always helps that person find a better job.

Although it may not make sense if you look at the economic state of the country today, college scholarships are out there and they are plentiful. The biggest decision is not which one to apply for, but in finding enough hours in the day to apply for as many as you can and get them in the mail before the application deadlines.

At the bottom line, college scholarships are a financial instrument that allows you to attend college and have part of all of your expenses paid for by the scholarship. This might be a discounted tuition rate, full tuition reimbursement, it may include books and lab fees, and it may also include housing expenses. When you look at the total cost of attending college over 4 years (assuming you can even DO it in 4 years), the cost of college is a very respectable four-digit number, perhaps even five figures. Having a scholarship to defray part of all of that cost can mean the difference between going to a community college versus a brand name college, or even worse, the difference between attending college and not attending college at all.

The difference between a college scholarship and financial aid is one very minor point, but an incredibly important point: a college scholarship does not need to be repaid after you graduate from college, whereas financial aid like a student loan does need to be repaid. To avoid having you worry about the loan while you are sweating out the courses, most student loans do not become payable until after you graduate, and offer very low interest rates. The college admissions office is full of applications from students whose primary job was to lick the stamp that went on the envelope, but the rewards of a college scholarship should go to those who demonstrate the want, need, and desire to attend college, and have some understanding of the financial burden that such a goal comes with, and are willing to do their part to find a solution.

While you are attending college, there is no way to anticipate every need. One of the things you may wish to consider is a college student credit card. There are a great number of institutions willing to give a credit card to a college student just for this reason. While the interest rate may be higher and the credit limit lower, this will also introduce the student to the world of finance and teach them lessons about credit cards that will be carried with them for the rest of their lives.
