A Brief History of Makeup

The cosmetics industry sells tens of billions of dollars annually to its customers worldwide. Advertisements for makeup, hair care products and the like abound and niche magazines promoting cosmetics are some of the very best sellers.

While today’s cosmetics industry is amongst the most dominant markets, in fact makeup has been used by women for thousands of years.

The earliest recorded use of makeup involved the Egyptians of the 4th Century before Christ. Scented oils, sheep fat based cremes and eye paint were applied by upper class women to beautify their facial features.

In the following millenniums, women in the Far East, especially the Japanese and Chinese, stained their faces with a powder derived from rice to make their complexions a pasty white, while both men and women of the aristocratic classes in Europe applied white lead and chalk powders to achieve the same ghostly effect. The pale face was desirable, as it differentiated the wealthy from the ‘common’ workers who had sun-bronzed complexions. Another method of obtaining the desired look involved a powder comprised largely of hydroxide, carbonate, and lead oxide, the latter often leading to lead poisoning. During this same period, Greek women applied ocher clay and red iron to their lips - perhaps the first historical lipstick application.

Little changed during the dark centuries of the Middle Ages. Perfumes with alcohol bases were introduced to Europe by Crusaders returning from the Middle East in the 1200’s. In the 1400’s upper class women in England, again seeking a whiter complexion, took to applying egg whites to their faces. But the real emergence of makeup in European society took place commencing in the following two centuries, especially in France and Italy, with the former in particular being responsible for the development of manufacturing facilities for both makeup and perfumes. These were created from aromatic natural ingredients like fruits, tree bark, flowers and roots employing a very laborious blending process that necessitated the use of excessive quantities of these natural ingredients in order to produce very small amounts of products.

The use of cosmetics spread throughout Europe during the next two hundred years, with their use becoming more and more prevalent amongst all but the poorest women. And in the 1800’s, the French began developing more advanced scientific processes for the creation of new cosmetic products, with zinc oxide bases now replacing more dangerous substances such as copper and lead. And the first beauty salons made their appearance towards the end of the 19th century.

It should be noted that that at some times and places, such as in Victorian England of the 19th century, the use of makeup and other cosmetics was frowned upon and seen as proper only for stage actors and the like, being far too ‘vulgar’ for upper class society.

But the birth of the cosmetics industry as we know it today did not take place until the early 1930’s. In large part, Hollywood was responsible. Popular actresses such as Mary Pickford and Jean Harlow appeared on screen before millions of admiring women across America and Europe, introducing a modern tanned look to the masses. And Hollywood makeup artist Max Factor began using pancake make-up and other products to produce desirable looks for the cameras.

Following the end of the Second World War and with the emerging economic boom, came the growth of today’s cosmetics industry, accelerated by the new technology of television. Ads for cosmetic products, especially lipsticks and mascaras, abounded and concurrently came the blossoming of the beauty magazine industry. Since the 1970’s an abundance of new cosmetic products to meet the concerns of a health conscious public have been created, such as natural cremes and conditioners and, more recently, mineral makeup.

Today there are literally tens of thousands of cosmetic products on the market. Television, newspapers, specialty magazines and websites are saturated with marketing messages and promotions for every possible sort of cosmetic need imaginable. For the consumer, this means both more choice, and lower prices due to the amount of competition for the customer’s wallet. The cosmetics industry has definitely traveled a long way since the sheep fat cremes of the ancient world.

Colin Albert oversees the MineralMakeupShoppe website. The web site discusses a new makeup product called Naked Minerals makeup, a superior pressed mineral makeup that is chemical-free, easy to apply and is neither messy or subject to spilling.

Nero, Christians, and the Great Fire of Rome

It was the night of July 19, 64 A.D., when the Great Fire burst through the rooftops of shops near the mass entertainment and chariot racing venue called Circus Maximus. The flames, whipped by a strong wind, rapidly engulfed densely populated areas of the city.

After burning uncontrolled for five days, 4 of the 14 Roman districts were burned to the ground, and seven more were severely damaged.

Nero: Fiddling While Rome Burned?

Nero might have been playing a kithara while Rome burned, but he wasn’t playing a fiddle. That’s because violins weren’t invented until around 1550.

Nero, probably the most infamous Roman emperor, was a great-grandson of Caesar Augustus.

When his mother’s husband (also her uncle, and Nero’s adopted father…) was murdered with poisoned mushrooms, Nero succeded to the throne.

Like many kids in those days, he wanted to be a famous singer and a poet. His talent was poor, but as emperor, the empire doubled as captive audience.

His mother tried to control Nero, to the point of having intercourse with him. He tried to murder her by booking her on a ship that was designed to fall apart at sea. Unfortunately, his mom was a good swimmer. After she survived, he had a soldier kill her. This shocked the public, a little bit, but they got over it.

Neropolis

It was no secret that Nero wanted to build a series of palaces that he planned to name Neropolis.

But, the planned location was in the city. In order to build Neropolis, a third of Rome would have to be torn down. The senate rejected the idea.

Then, coincidentally, the fire cleared the real estate Neropolis required.

Despite the obvious benefit, there’s still a good probability that Nero did NOT start the fire. Up to a hundred small fires regularly broke out in Rome each day. On top of that, the fire destroyed Nero’s own palace. It also appears that Nero did everything he could to stop the fire…

Nero’s Reaction to the Fire

Accounts of the day say that when Nero heard about the fire, he rushed back from Antium to organize a relief effort, using his own money. He opened his palaces to let in the homeless, and had food supplies delivered to the survivors.

Nero also devised a new urban development plan that would make Rome less vulnerable to fire. But, although he put in place rules to insure a safer reconstruction, he also gave himself a huge tract of city property with the intention of building his new palace there.

Fake Terror Gives Poll Numbers a Bump

People knew of Nero’s plans for Neropolis, and all his efforts to help the city could not counteract the rampant rumors that he’d help start the fire.

As his poll numbers dropped, Nero’s administration realized the need to employ False Flag 101: When something-anything-bad happens to you, even if it’s accidental, point the finger at your enemy.

Luckily, there was a strange new cult of religious nuts at hand. This cult was unpopular because they refused to worship the emperor, denounced possessions, held secret meetings, and they were always talking about the destruction of Rome and the end of the world.

Even more lucky for Nero, two of the cult’s biggest leaders-Peter and Paul-were currently in town.

So, Nero spread word that the Christians had started the Great Fire. The citizens of Rome bought his lie hook, line, and sinker. Peter was crucified (upside down, at his own request) and Paul was beheaded. Hundreds of others in the young cult were fed to the lions, or smeared with tar and set on fire to become human street lamps.

Such is the fate of those unwittingly caught in a false flag operation.

Five Things You Need to Know to Create an Outside Oasis

Choose the Right Patio Furniture

If properly constructed, your outdoor furniture will last for years. That’s why it’s critical for you to make the right choice from the start. But even discount patio furniture can end up being expensive. Whatever you pick, your outdoor furniture will be both a financial investment and a long-term commitment, so you want to be sure to choose your furniture wisely.

But how do you know you’re choosing patio furniture that’s right for you?

Five Things To Consider in Patio Furniture

A brand name alone isn’t enough to know that you’re getting quality patio furniture. What works for one person might not work for you. Here are five areas you need to consider as you choose your patio furniture:

  • Style
  • Type
  • Finish
  • Size
  • Durability

1. Styles of Patio Furniture

Styles in patio furniture vary greatly, but the purpose of considering style has more to do with your personal preference than actual construction. The style you pick in patio furniture says much about your character. Do you like inviting, comfortable cushions, or are you more of a formal, wrought-iron person?

Think about the image you’d like to convey with your patio furniture and start from there. Here are the five main styles that patio furniture comes in:

  • Strapped/Sling Seat Design - Constructed of fabrics, this seat design offers great lumbar support because of its all-in-one design, which resembles a chaise recliner.

  • Metal - This durable style uses aluminum and iron. It is what appears in most types of patio furniture.

  • Wood - This style of patio furniture can come in a variety of wood types such as pine, cedar, teak, and even wicker.

  • Cushioned Seat Design - Not all patio furniture has padding, but cushioned seating is a popular style today because of the added support it offers.

  • Resin - Constructed of strong polymers, resin patio furniture is a favorite today for people who want to save money but still have a stylish look to their outdoor furniture.

2. Types of Patio Furniture

In choosing your patio furniture, you should also be aware of the different types. Most patio furniture is available in the following types:

  • Aluminum
  • Iron
  • Resin
  • Teak
  • Wood
  • Wicker

When you compare these types, it is essential for you to take your location into account. If you live in an excruciatingly hot area, then metal furniture is not a good choice for you. Resin patio furniture might be better. On the other hand, if you live in a colder climate, resin might not be a wise choice because polymer products can crack under extreme cold.

3. Finishes in Patio Furniture

When it comes to finishes, there are three main types: frame finishes, vinyl finishes, and a combination of frame and vinyl. When picking a finish, you should definitely consider the weather elements, particularly if you have nowhere to store your patio furniture during your harshest seasons. For example, as with patio furniture types, a vinyl finish might not stand up as well as a wood frame finish in colder climates.

4. Size of Patio Furniture

There are many choices in patio furniture and patio accessories, but size is a pivotal factor to bear in mind. Ask yourself two important questions:

  • How much space do you have on your patio or deck?
  • How does the patio furniture fit your body size?

You don’t want furniture that cramps your patio space too much - it is possible to have too much of a good thing. You also need to make sure you’re choosing patio furniture that not only fits your style, but your body as well. If the furniture you pick is pretty but doesn’t feel comfortable to you, then you won’t use it, which defeats the purpose.

5. Durability of Patio Furniture

Patio furniture needs to hold up to certain demands of durability, so you should carefully consider any factor that might cause wear and tear. Here are some questions you might ask yourself:

  • Do you have young children?
  • Do you live in harsh weather at certain times of the year or even all year round?
  • Does your patio get more sun than other areas around your home?

For example, teak looks beautiful. However, if you reside in a location with high levels of moisture or sunlight, and lack the time for proper maintenance, then teak might not be the best choice for you.

Picking the Right Patio Furniture

Finally, when shopping for outdoor furniture, it’s important to have an idea of what you like before ever making a purchase. As long as you consider your style and the location in which you live, you can make the right choice in buying your patio furniture.

This Costs You Money

Important news: Maxwell Goodcat gets mail.

And this could cost your business money.

Here’s why:

First, as you might guess from the name, Maxwell is a cat. He does not subscribe to magazines, fill out product warranty cards, or belong to associations. And (most important) he does not have a credit card or a check book.

But he does have a web page. LINK

And because of this, he receives advertising mail.

Some of it comes from companies that use direct mail to attract customers.

And some of it comes from a company that sells mailing lists–most likely to the companies in the first group.

How did this happen?

A web crawler found Maxwell’s page, grabbed his name and added my business address. I doubt that a human being would have done this because Maxwell’s picture appears on his web page (remember, since he’s a cat, he looks like a cat).

And that brings us to a disturbing possibility: there are millions of web pages dedicated to pets. So a computer generated mailing list could contain names like Patty Parakeet, Doug Dog, and Bessie Begonia. None of them have money.
So, be careful. Of course, every mailing list contains trash entries that are obsolete, inaccurate, or wrong, and computer-compiled lists will contain a larger fraction of useless entries.

Consider this:

1. You will be more successful contacting people who have an interest in your products and services. Focus on only qualified buyers.

2. Compare results with costs. A mail campaign is supposed to make money for you. Sending out tons of mail is impressive only when it brings in tons of orders.

3. Mail campaigns are the least efficient way to contact people. Most people sort mail near a waste basket–tossing out junk mail.

Unless, of course, your mail is sent to Maxwell Goodcat. I save his mail as an example of poorly-targeted advertising.

Credit Card Processing - Credit Card Factoring Solutions

Credit card processing is frequently one of the most problematic and overlooked issues for a business owner. An effective credit card factoring program can reduce many credit card processing problems by implementing appropriate cost-reduction strategies. Credit card factoring improvements can produce dual business benefits by both eliminating credit card processing problems and providing improved cash flow by enhanced management of business cash advance programs.

CREDIT CARD PROCESSING AND CREDIT CARD FACTORING SOLUTIONS:
Reduce Credit Card Processing Costs Via the Credit Card Factoring and Business Cash Advance Process

As I noted in an earlier business loan article, for any business that accepts credit cards as a method of payment, a business cash advance (obtained through credit card factoring) is a critical working capital financing tool that is often overlooked. Even thriving businesses frequently need more working capital than they can borrow from a bank. However, what is typically even more overlooked by many business owners is the opportunity to reduce their credit card processing costs at the same time that they obtain a business cash advance via credit card factoring.

CREDIT CARD PROCESSING AND CREDIT CARD FACTORING SOLUTIONS:
Key Problems to Avoid with Credit Card Factoring and Credit Card Processing

Credit card factoring is an important option to consider when a business is seeking short-term commercial loans, unsecured business loans and improved approaches to credit card processing services. Unfortunately there are a number of problems to be avoided with credit card processing and credit card factoring programs. As with any successful business financing strategy, there will typically be only a small number of commercial lenders who are effective at implementing the joint tasks of credit card processing and credit card factoring strategies properly.

Because of this, the prudent choice of an appropriate provider of credit card processing and credit card factoring is extremely important to any business owner that accepts credit cards. To help demonstrate which providers of credit card processing and credit card factoring to avoid, I have written an article which identifies ten key problems which should be avoided with credit card factoring and credit card processing.

CREDIT CARD PROCESSING AND CREDIT CARD FACTORING SOLUTIONS:
How to Obtain The Best and Lowest-Cost Credit Card Processing Services

For business owners either unhappy with their current credit card processing services or simply wondering if cost improvements are viable, a credit card factoring program which eliminates all of the ten key problems noted above should be considered. One of the primary reasons for evaluating credit card processing and credit card factoring in this coordinated fashion is that the low-cost producers of the best business cash advance programs will almost certainly be using the best and lowest-cost producers of credit card processing services. In many cases, the best and lowest-cost providers of credit card processing are simply not available to the average business owner other than as part of a working capital management plan encompassing both credit card factoring and credit card processing.

CREDIT CARD PROCESSING AND CREDIT CARD FACTORING SOLUTIONS:
Cost Reduction and Improved Cash Flow for Successful Working Capital Management

Business owners should not lose sight of the substantial total benefits which might accrue to their business by effectively combining credit card processing and credit card factoring services. As noted above, cost reduction and improved cash flow are primary goals of successful working capital management, and the proper coordination of credit card factoring and credit card processing should accomplish both of these difficult goals simultaneously.

How to Have Your Dog Live Longer

Every dog owner will want to ensure that their dog will enjoy a long and healthy life. But how long is the average life of your particular breed of dog and what can you do to increase the possibility that your dog will live longer than expected?

A myth has developed that one year of a dog’s life is equal to seven human years, so that, for example, a dog at age one is like a human child at age seven, and a 5-year old dog is the equivalent of a human adult of 35.

Actually, there is no established linear correlation between dog years and human years. Dogs mature much more quickly than humans. A dog at age one has generally achieved its full growth and is sexually active - this is obviously not true of a seven year old human child. So a dog at age one is similar to a teenager, who has some growing out to do but is more or less mature physically. Thereafter each year in a dog’s life may be seen as about equal to 4 to 6 human years.

Overall, the life expectancy of American dogs is around twelve years on average. But the actual expected life span of any particular dog is highly dependent on its breed. Generally speaking, the larger the breed of dog, the shorter its life will be. Veterinarians guess that this is because larger dogs’ bodies must work harder than those of their smaller compatriots.

The average life spans for some of the most common breeds of dogs are: -7-10 years: Great Dane, Newfoundland, Doberman Pinscher, Bulldog, Rottweiler; 9-11 years: St. Bernard, Bloodhound, Chow Chow, Boxer; 10-13 years: Airedale Terrier, Dalmatian, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Scottish Terrier, Afghan Hound, Dachshund, Irish Setter; 12-15 years: Beagle, Bichon Frise, Collie, Doberman, Pomeranian, Border Terrier, Cocker Spaniel, English Springer Spaniel, Greyhound, Labrador; 14-16 years: Boston Terrier, Irish Setter, Standard Poodle, Schnauzer, Shih Tzu, Yorkshire Terrier; 15-18 years: Dachshund, Miniature and Toy Poodle, Chihuahua.

The life expectancies set out above are for purebred dogs. Inbreeding and pure breeding can weaken the gene pool and reduce life expectancy, as a unique pool increases the likelihood of an undesirable trait influencing your dog’s genetic makeup dog.

So what can be done to increase the chance of your dog beating the statistical norms for its particular breed and living a longer than average life? Obviously seeing to it that your dog gets plenty of exercise is important. And, like humans, dogs seem to thrive better in an atmosphere that is relatively stress-free.

Most important is your dog’s diet. Dogs are carnivores and as such require a diet heavy in meat proteins, as high as 42% for puppies. Unfortunately the manufactured foods we buy for them at the supermarket or local pet store, while being high in protein, for the large part use cereal grain protein sources. You should try to feed them a supplement that contains high grade meat proteins. In addition, to help ward off the chances of cancer, it is advisable that the supplement contain immune enhancers. To ward off skin irritations and the seemingly inevitable scratching, an anti-inflammatory supplement containing a proper balance of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids should be added to the daily diet. As dogs are very prone to joint diseases as they grow older, a Cox-2 inhibitor can prove very useful. And of course the supplement should be rich in vitamins and minerals.

Setting aside thirty minutes each day to play with your dog and to see that it gets a decent amount of daily exercise, while keeping a watchful eye on its diet, can go a long way to ensuring your dog leads a long and healthy life. And be sure to take your dog to the veterinarian annually for a thorough examination.

Colin Albert runs the TakeCareofYourPet web site. The web site discusses information about a new product called Hope for Pets, a natural supplement that is amongst the very best nutritional supplements on the market to aid in promoting long, healthy lives for our pets.

Building Connections - Even When You’re Scared

Do you have the experience of feeling accepted, cared about, and important when you are with others, or are you worried about being rejected, forgotten, or abandoned?

Probably, like most of us, you feel comfortable and secure in some situations, and insecure and a little scared in others. A lot probably depends upon how connected you feel to the people you are with, and your past experiences with them.

Believe it or not, how you feel also is related to how you were treated when you were a small child.

If there was always a loving grownup to return to after you met the challenges of your world, you felt like you had what psychologists call a secure base. If you had this sense of security then, you expect to be able to recreate it whenever you need it, and you do so. If you didn’t, you have a harder job feeling comfortable in new situations.

We each need to feel like we have a secure base to return to in every situation. This base is created by our meaningful relationships with others. The more relationships you can rely upon, the more secure you feel. The more secure you feel, the easier it is to reach out and create new relationships.

If you are one of the lucky ones who feels an internal sense of security from childhood experiences, it’s easier for you than it is for some others to build new relationships.

If you are not one of the lucky ones, and especially if your early experiences taught you that others are untrustworthy or unreliable, you may feel less secure now. Creating a relationship, with a therapist or a professional coach can definitely help you learn how to connect more easily with others.

An important reason for belonging to any organization is to create a web of relationships where you feel accepted and appreciated - to create a secure base for yourself within the organization and within a community. When you know others and are known by them, you automatically turn to them when you need someone to help you solve a problem or provide a product or service.

Another reason for belonging is to make contacts that will aid you in your career or business. When you focus on creating relationships, this support seems to happen by itself.

Networking, deliberately meeting new people, is another way to connect with others. If you are not an experienced networker, or if you feel insecure about being accepted, you may be uncertain about the best way to make this happen.

When you are at a gathering you may feel tempted to only talk to the people you already know. Or you may think that because you are there to network, you should talk to as many new people as possible. You really need to do some of each in order to keep expanding your own secure base.

Remember, the thing you need is meaningful relationships, and meaningful relationships need to be nourished with repeated contacts in order to grow. Go ahead and get connected!

Communicate skillfully about sensitive subjects in business situations. Have the challenging conversations that lead to cooperation and success. http://www.game2u.net

USS Maine Explodes in Havana Harbor

In 1898, elites within the United States government falsely accused Spain of blowing up the USS Maine in order to stoke the American people into a flag-waving frenzy that resulted in the Spanish-American War.

Death of the Spanish Empire

The Spanish Empire was the first truly global empire, reaching its territorial height in the late 1700s.

As evidence of Spain’s once vast footprint, the Spanish language is still the 3rd most spoken language in the world. (Even if you don’t think you speak Spanish, you probably know some Spanish words: Can you say tornado? Bonanza? Patio? Quesadilla? Enchilada? Taco grande supreme?)

But nothing lasts forever, and like every empire since the beginning of time (save the USA, which is still young…) Spain’s status as the world’s greatest power was not to last.

By 1898, Spain was regularly losing territories. Although Spain still ruled Cuba, it, too, was becoming increasingly hard to control, and a minor revolution had broken out. This wasn’t welcome news to people in the United States who owned Cuban sugar, tobacco, and iron industry properties valued at over $50 million (which was a chunk of change in the 1890s!)

The mainstream media, then dominated by newspaper magnates Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, exaggerated-and outright fabricated-stories of horrible conditions under Spanish rule.

Following the age-old maxim, “If it bleeds, it leads,” the newspapers published stories about Spanish death camps, Spanish cannibalism, and inhumane torture. Americans ate it up and asked for more gravy.

So the newspapers sent more reporters to Cuba.

When they got there, however, the reporters found a different story. Artist and correspondent Frederick Remington even wrote back to Hearst, “There is no war. Request to be recalled.” Hearst’s famous reply: “Please remain. You furnish the pictures, I’ll furnish the war.”

And he did. His newspaper, continually screaming how Spanish Cuba was going to hell in a handbasket, convinced big business interests in the U.S. to put pressure on anti-war President William McKinley to protect their Cuban investments.

McKinley, in response, sent the USS Maine battleship to Havana Harbor as a calming show of force.

Instead, the battleship exploded…

USS Maine Explodes in Havana Harbor

Three weeks after arriving, on the night of February 15, 1898, the USS Maine exploded.

There are two theories for the explosion: Some believe the explosion was caused by an external mine that detonated the ship’s ammunition magazines. Others say it was caused by a spontaneous coal bunker fire that reached the ammunition magazines. Currently, the evidence seems to favor the external mine theory.

One thing, however, is almost certain: if the explosion was caused by a mine, it wasn’t planted by Spain.

Nevertheless, the explosion killed 266 men. Without waiting on an investigation, America’s mainstream media blamed the tragedy on Spain and beat the drums for war. By April, McKinley yielded to public pressure and signed a congressional resolution declaring war on Spain.

Wars and Taxes

To help pay for the Spanish-American War, congress enacted a “temporary” tax of 3 percent on long-distance telephone bills. This was essentially a tax on the rich, as only about 1,300 Americans owned phones in 1898.

Although the Spanish-American War ended in 1898, the temporary tax was only abolished in…2005.

Over its lifetime, the 107-year-old tax generated almost $94 billion-more than 230 times the cost of the Spanish-American War.

The Birth of an American Empire

The Spanish-American War put a large nail in the coffin of Spain’s global empire. And by the end of 1898, the United States, which was founded in opposition to imperialism, found itself in control not only of Cuba, but of the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Hawaiian Islands as well.

Not a bad catch for one second-class battleship.

Foreclosure- Why Lenders Are Reaching Out To Assist Struggling Homeowners

As home foreclosures begin to mount throughout the country, mortgage companies are becoming increasingly proactive by sending letters, making phone calls and in some cases even knocking on doors to let struggling homeowners know : They’d rather modify a loan than foreclose on the home.

According to an Associated Press article, EMC Mortgage Corp., which has a $78 billion loan portfolio that includes subprime loans made to homeowners with weak credit, has announced this week that they have launched a 50-person team it calls “the Mod Squad.” Members will spend an unlimited time on the phone with struggling borrowers, working with them to help them sift through their bills in order to compute a workable monthly payment or what is known as a foreclosure workout. In an industry that often rewards workers for getting off the phone quickly, the team is preparing to speak to just three people a day in an attempt to find workable solutions for homeowners in default. The team members will be taking on the role of counselors as opposed to a typical customer service call center.

This loan counseling team called the Mod Squad is planning a six-city tour; it hopes to attract struggling homeowners to information and counseling sessions with offers of $100 gift cards to Home Depot Inc. The number is (877) 362-6631.

What many homeowners do not know is that lenders have long modified loans for homeowners facing involuntary job loss, illness, divorce or a death in the family. But with many borrowers across the country struggling to keep up with mortgage payments as interest rates on their loans adjust, mortgage companies increasingly are prodding anyone who’s having trouble making payments for any reason to give them a call.

Many critics are weighing in saying lenders made loans to borrowers who weren’t creditworthy with terms that would be impossible for them to meet. While others sit pointing fingers as to who is to blame for the problem, lenders are trying to find proactive solutions to reduce the percentage of loan portfolio’s from going into default. Whether the current wave of workouts will merely postpone foreclosures - and delay bad loans hitting lenders’ books - is still an open question as there is not enough data available to see if these modifications will workout in the long-term.

New foreclosures hit their highest ever level in the fourth quarter of 2006, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. Home owners are the obvious losers, but what many consumers do not realize is that all the financial services companies involved lose as well. “The lender loses the steady stream of payments it counted on. If it sold the loan as part of a securitization, a package of mortgage-backed securities, that investor loses. Loan servicers, who are usually paid a fraction of the interest on a loan, will lose too.”
