Can anyone deny that there are passages in the Bible that are very hard to understand and sometimes hard to accept? The question is of course, rhetorical. Certainly no one could make such a claim. Those who would deny that there are difficult scriptures either do not spend much time in the Word or they are simply dishonest. I am not sure which of the two is worse.

From simple questions about where Cain’s wife came from, to more complex issues such as the apparent misquote in Matthew 27:9-10; there are literally scores of passages where there seems to be confusion. In some instances it is seems almost impossible to reconcile what is being said with other portions of scripture.

In ministry, it would be relatively easy to avoid the difficulties and not bring attention to them at all. Who would know? And if the Bible was just a book written by men, Biblicists such as me might be inclined to do just that. But the Bible is not just a book. It is the transmitted thoughts and will of Almighty God. It is the Word (and words) of God. It is the final and only authority on truth and fact.

Many have attacked it. Many have tried to prove it false, and in so doing, have been converted by its awesome power and authority. Men will claim that it is full of contradictions, but are not able to point out a single example to support their argument.

Knowing there are those who would jump at the chance to find problems in scripture should not make believers apprehensive or shy in declaring it the plenary word of the Living God. Nor should we refrain from using those portions we feel might pose difficulties to explain. Too often Bible teachers will avoid passages in their sermons and lessons because they imagine there is conflict in what the scripture says.

Difficulty in understanding a passage does not discredit what is being said. Rather it reflects on the knowledge level of the one who sees it as difficult. The fact that we cannot immediately understand or explain the difficulty away does not mean it cannot be solved with proper research and prayer. Sometimes that research takes a long time, but this is the case with almost anything that one wants to learn. I may not understand what the mechanic is telling me about needed vehicle repairs, but I could learn mechanics myself and gain that understanding if I was willing to make the effort.

In my formative years as a Christian, I came across many difficult or hard to understand passages in my studies. Indeed, some of what I read seemed illogical, perhaps even impossible and they tested my faith. Yet I trusted the authority of scripture and accepted it as truth. Years later, with a more sound knowledge of scripture, those same passages posed absolutely no difficulty to me whatsoever. With experience and broader familiarity with scripture, the once difficult passages became very easy to understand.

The Apostle Paul spoke of the “milk” and “meat” of the word. Christians must start out with the milk or easier-to-digest things of God before they are ready to consume the meatier things. It is the superficial or inexperienced reader who adds calamity to a difficult verse. They read something they do not understand and panic. Too often young Christians get bogged down trying to understand something that they simply are not capable of grasping at their present knowledge level. Sometimes spiritual anxiety over such small issues completely consumes them and they run around like Chicken Little declaring that their faith is falling.

The seasoned, faithful reader of the Bible knows that understanding will come in time after appropriate effort is invested in researching the perceived difficulty. They have been down this road before. They have come up against seemingly unexplainable passages that subsequent studies explained. There is always an explanation. God’s Word is always correct and without conflict or contradiction.

I am not trying to diminish the fact that there are very difficult passages of scripture that are problematic to the student of scripture. II Peter 3:16 confirms this. We are told:

“As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which

are some things hard to be understood which they that are unlearned

and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures…”

God openly tells us through the Apostle Peter that some of the things written in the Bible are hard to be understood and we wrestle with them. Why are they hard? Is it because God purposely wanted to hide something from us? Is it because God wants to play a game of cat and mouse with his higher knowledge? No. God does not play games. He wants us to understand, but that understanding must come when we are ready for strong meat. Believers must go through a growing process. Verse 18 of this chapter confirms this:

“But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior

Jesus Christ.”

In keeping with all the other passages that tell us to “study”, “prepare” or “learn”, we are told to “grow in grace”. The only way to grow in grace is to read the manual (the Bible) faithfully and consistently, building ourselves up in knowledge and understanding.

Increasing our knowledge in the Bible is like any other thing we learn - we must study and learn in order to grow and excel. That is precisely why it is important to not shy away from difficult passages. We need to learn what they mean. If we shy away from them, our confidence in the word will wane and our regimen for study will eventually wane as well.

There really are no difficult passages. There is just a lack of understanding of those passages. This can be remedied through faithful study. The wisest advice I ever received from a man of God I would like to pass on here. He said “Put your nose in the book and keep your eyes on Jesus.” The meaning is clear; study and trust the Lord to bring you to a place of understanding.

Debts can become overwhelming, particularly when the monthly payments steadily increase leaving you with less and less money to spend on your needs. Financial struggle can actually cause people to become paralyzed and unable to take the very action which could free them. Frankly, people stop thinking straight when they are under too much financial pressure for too long. However, most people could alleviate the stress caused by high monthly debt costs by simply combining all their debts into one low interest debt consolidation loan.

Your financial problems cannot change unless you are prepared to take action. Here are five methods you can use to face your debt and succeed financially:

1. USE A DEBT CONSOLIDATION SERVICE. It can be hard seeing your way clear of debt. It can be very helpful to obtain the help of professional debt counselors who can locate the best debt consolidation loan for your needs as well as providing budgeting advice and establishing a long term financial plan that will not only help you get out of debt, but will also help you to establish your own wealth.

2. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR HOME EQUITY. If you have enough equity in your home, a home equity loan is likely to be the lowest cost debt consolidation loan available to you. The only downside is that your house is used as collateral and if you don’t pay the loan payments when they fall due the lender is within its rights to foreclose. However, if you plan to pay by the due date every month, this debt consolidation loan will probably save you a lot of money.

3. CONSOLIDATE YOUR DEBTS INTO ONE PERSONAL LOAN. For those individuals who do not have home equity to draw upon or do not wish to use their home as collateral, an unsecured personal loan is the next best debt consolidation loan. Under some circumstances, lenders may require security on a personal loan but this is rare. Personal loans usually offer much lower interest rates than credit cards or consumer loans, although not usually as low as home equity loans. The right personal loan can be a low cost debt consolidation loan and it can free you from the stress of high monthly debt costs.

4. BUDGET. A debt consolidation loan won’t help you long term unless you can avoid repeating the mistake of using credit in a crunch. It is therefore very important to create a budget that you can live within. For long term financial success your budget should not only cover expenses, it should also include a strategy to pay off debt quickly and savings for emergencies.

5. CANCEL YOUR CREDIT CARDS. A mistake a lot of people make when they consolidate their debts is to keep their credit cards and lines of credit “just in case” when the balances are paid off.
There will be times in our lives when we feel that it is necessary to use credit. If we don’t have it to fall back on we will have to find another solution.

If you are stressed by high debt payments every month and need some quick relief, a debt consolidation loan could be just what you are looking for. Take some time to choose the right debt consolidation loan for you and then take action. You won’t regret it.

A Cat of a Different Color

One of my favorite films is the Wizard of Oz. Who has not marveled at the color and special effects used in this film way back in the 1930s? The production was nothing short of genius during the dark ages of the special effects industry. One of the most memorable scenes in the movie for me is when Dorothy and her entourage enter Emerald City and the horse drawing their coach keeps changing colors. To draw audience attention to this colorful spectacle the coach driver (who also is the traveling salesman, the doorman to Emerald City and the Wizard himself) announces “Now that is a horse of a different color!”

Now, in real life I have never seen a horse like the one pictured in the film, but I have seen a cat of a different color. In order to tell you about the cat however, I first must tell you about a dog; my dog…”Scooter”.

Scooter was the first dog I ever shared my life with. He came out of a cardboard box sitting in a department store. He cost me $4.99, almost all of my birthday money for that year. I didn’t know it then, but that purchase was perhaps the best value I had ever gotten for my money in my life. He was definitely the best investment, for he paid out years of devotion and friendship that my human friends could never have given me. He was a great companion and friend. He was protective and faithful. He stuck closer to me than a brother no matter where my adventurous travels took us.

On one of our escapades, Scooter and I were at one of our favorite places, the marble yard. Before you picture circles drawn in the dirt with kids shooting glass balls, let me explain that the marble yard was a plant where they cut and stored huge marble slabs. Each slab was as wide as the widest refrigerator and twice as long, weighing several tons each. The slabs were stacked 4 or 5 high with railroad ties between them to give the stacks stability.

There were easily hundreds of stacks on the four acre parcel of land. Each stack was different in shape, size and stability. Some were solid and firm. Others would wobble when you jumped on them from another stack, much like the trick stones on some Disney rides. In retrospect, the wobbling slabs were probably what kept drawing me and the rest of the gang back to play there. It was so much fun being able to rock a multi-ton stone so high off the ground. Typical boys, we never thought about the danger, only the fun.

My gang (a term that did not carry a violent connotation to it in my day) consisted of six or seven pre-teen boys and our dogs. Most of our time together was spent at the marble yard. During mulberry season, you could climb up the slabs and reach the biggest and most juicy berries anywhere. We played Army, using sticks for guns and flung mulberries at each other like kids do today with their paint guns. The only difference was the stain left by mulberries didn’t wash off as easily.

We also played tag, chasing each other around the tops of those stacks. It was a grand place that we all loved with the same passion our mothers loathed it. Many a fractured skull had come crying home from this enchanting place. We were all forbidden to play there, but…
On one particular occasion, only Scooter and I were in the marble yard. I was jumping from stack to stack above, while he chased me from a dozen feet below. The idea of this game was to get away and hide from Scooter so he could search for me. He was really very good at it and I had to scurry around with abandon to get away from him. The fact that I could have fallen and split my head open (again) was not a consideration. We were having too much fun.

I made some quick maneuvers, jumping rapidly across four stacks of marble and felt that I surely had confused and lost Scooter. When I laid down on one of the top slabs and peeked over the edge, he was not there. I peeked over the other side and he wasn’t there either. In fact, he was nowhere to be seen and I started to get concerned. Suddenly, I heard him yelping and barking from what seemed to be a great distance away.

I mountain-goated my way down to the ground and began looking for him. To my surprise I found that he wasn’t very far away at all. He had just been barking from inside a huge hole under one of the bottom slabs. This had muffled the sound and given the impression that he was farther away.

He was aggressively digging and barking under this slab, so I got on my hands and knees to see what he was after. I knew feral cats abounded in the marble yard and often had their kittens under the slabs, so it did not surprise me to see the silhouette of a cat back in the dark, under the slab, near to where Scooter was.

I egged him on by saying “get him Scooter, get him boy”. Now, before you think me an insensitive wretch or cat hater, please let me explain. I love cats and would do nothing to endanger them. Scooter was all bark. He always had been. I knew it and he knew it. He was a very fast dog. He had often chased cats and rabbits down, but when he caught them, he didn’t know what he was supposed to do next. So he would back off and just look at them. Even when a cat spat or swiped at him, he would just sit with a stupid grin on his face and ultimately turn and run off.

He apparently knew that chasing cats was what dogs did, but I guess no one ever explained to him why. His modus operandi was to chase, catch and hold down; then back off and watch them. He never bit them, never growled, and never stayed interested in them very long after the chase. He just seemed to like to run after them to prove he was faster. He never hurt any of them and I knew this time would be the same

So, knowing this, I had no reservations about egging him on. After doing so, I maneuvered myself to the place I thought the cat would exit when Scooter successfully flushed him out so I could catch him. Right on cue, the cat came running out and I jumped forward to catch it. Everything happened so quickly after that I cannot recall the exact order of events, but I do remember noting that it was the most strangely colored cat I had ever seen. It was black with beautiful white stripes and a very fluffy tail. In fact, it was a cat of a different color.

This thought was immediately followed by a very strange event. Like magic, right before my eyes, this beautifully colored cat transformed itself into a skunk, and a very angry one at that. I had no time to react. I was airborne, in the middle of my lunge for the “cat” when Scooter came shooting out of the hole behind him.

I don’t know how I managed it, but somehow I changed direction in mid-air and decided on a sage plan of escape. I think I might have made it too, except for Scooter. In keeping with his routine, he jumped on the back of the skunk and, to be honest, I don’t really remember what happened next, except to say that the immediate area was enveloped in a rather sickening cloud of skunk musk.

The only experience I have ever had that came close to that nauseating encounter was the day I went through the gas chamber training at the Naval Recruit Training Center in San Diego. At least then a quick shower took the gas residue off. Not so skunk musk. Everything you see in the cartoons is true. Your eyes burn, your skin burns, your face burns and you cannot breathe without gagging.

And you have to scrub. My mother scrubbed Scooter and me raw and when she was done doing that, she scrubbed us again. Scooter and I both got butch hair cuts and a bath of tomato juice that day. And then mom scrubbed us again. My mother was finally getting revenge for all the gray hairs the marble yard had caused her.

Scooter and I both learned a valuable lesson that day. There is no such thing as a cat of a different color!

After reading Super Affiliate Handbook by Rosalind Gardner, I felt that I had wasted a lot of time. No, I didn’t waste the time reading the book…I wasted the time figuring out how to do all of the affiliate marketing steps that she clearly lays out in the book.

If you are thinking of getting into affiliate marketing, you may want to start with a few books about the subject. You can simply Google search “Affiliate Marketing” and you will find almost 64 million links to sites. There are just as many theories out there on how to promote affiliates and their products. There is also information on the best website hosts and even how to step up websites.

I have found that many of them aren’t even worth a read. However, the Super Affiliate Handbook actually tackles almost every one of the obstacles you may encounter when you start affiliate marketing. It is definitely worth checking out (even if you use your library card to do it.)

In her almost 300 pages, she gives a step by step guide to the process that she used to make a good six-figure income from affiliate marketing. It will save you the time and effort some of the rest of us wasted trying to do it before reading her information.

Although inspiring, she also makes your realize that you cannot just sign up to be an affiliate in a program, set up a website, and just expect the money to start piling up in your bank account. It takes work and it takes skills, but it is not impossible to accomplish if you have the right tools.

She provides you with a lot of these tools if you are willing to just read the book and apply her techniques. Then you won’t have to waste the time the rest of us did trying to do it ourselves.

The Practical Guide to Oil Analysis

As a predictive maintenance tool, oil analysis is used to uncover, isolate and offer solutions for abnormal lubricant and machine conditions. These abnormalities, if left unchecked, usually result in extensive, sometimes catastrophic damage causing lost production, extensive repair costs, and even operator accidents.

The goal of a world-class oil analysis program is to increase the reliability and availability of your machinery, while minimizing maintenance costs associated with oil changeouts, labor, repairs and downtime. Accomplishing your goal takes time, training and patience. However, the results are dramatic and the documented savings in cost avoidance are significant.

What are Lubricants
Industrial oils are specifically designed fluids composed of a base oil and a compliment of additives. The base oil performs these functions, including forms a fluid film between moving parts in order to reduce friction and wear; carries away contaminants to the filter; and removes heat generated within the machine. Additives are chemical components added to the base oil to significantly enhance the performance characteristics of the lubricating oil. Typical enhanced properties include oxidation stability, wear protection, and corrosion inhibition.

Why Analyze Used Lubricants
There are three aspects of oil analysis, contaminants, lubricant conditions and machine wear. Ingressed contaminants from the surrounding environment in the form of air, dirt, water and process contamination are the leading cause of machine degradation and failure. Increased contamination alerts you to take action in order to save the oil and avoid unnecessary machine wear.

The assessment of the lubricant condition reveals whether the system fluid is healthy and fit for further service, or is ready for a change. Lastly, an unhealthy machine generates wear particles at an exponential rate. The detection and analysis of these particles assist in making critical maintenance decisions. Machine failure due to worn out components can be avoided. Remember, healthy and clean oil lead to the minimization of machine wear.

How Lube Oils Fail
Typically lubricant oils fail as a result of contamination, oil degradation and additive depletion. Contamination is usually caused by external sources like dirt, water, and process related liquids or materials or internal sources like machine wear and degradation by-products. Lubricant oils also fail because of oil degradation, or oxidation. It is where atmospheric oxygen combines with hydrocarbon molecules. The hotter the oil and the greater exposure to air, the faster oxidation proceeds. The initial by-products of oxidation are sludges and varnishes. However, further oxidation converts these by-products into carboxylic acids. These acids then aggressively attack and corrode many machine component surfaces. In addition, lube oils fail because of additive depletion, which are consumed or chemically changed while performing their function. The performance characteristics of the lubricant are altered and the enhanced properties are wiped out.

What Oil Analysis Measures
Oil analysis measures the physical and chemical properties of the oil, contamination and mechanical wear. You can uncover contamination or degradation by trending rates of change in selected lube properties, such as viscosity, acid number, particle counting, fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Karl Fischer water. Oil analysis also measures mechanical wear, which uncovers machine related problems using ICP spectroscopy, wear particle concentration, and analytical ferrography.

Most industrial plants in need of oil analysis services might begin their search on the web. While this is a common and effective place to begin the evaluation process, it definitely will not tell the whole story. Knowing the right questions to ask after the initial search is completed is crucial in uncovering a superior provider from an average oil analysis provider.

While the discerning potential customer may ask questions regarding testing capabilities, process and protocol, and price there are other questions whose answers may mean the difference between a seamless interaction and a laborious one. It is these questions that are most commonly overlooked and most important to understand.

With your time and money on the line, and so many oil analysis labs to pick from, how do you choose the right company? Here are five critical questions to ask when evaluating an oil analysis laboratory to ensure a successful long term oil analysis program.

1. What is your normal turnaround?
Contrary to popular belief, there are oil analysis laboratories out there that have the capability to provide high quality results and reporting in 24 hours. If the lab you’re working with doesn’t provide this, at least make sure expectations are defined up front. Know exactly what you’ll be receiving, and when. Do “days” include weekends? What about business hours?

While sample turnaround varies, just asking this question up front can give you a good idea of the overall process efficiency. No matter what the turnaround time, there should always be notification systems in place so that you know when your samples have been received and when your samples are finished. The samples you pull contain time sensitive information which should be conveyed to you in a prompt fashion. The sooner you get your results the better your program runs.

2. Is there an open line of communication?
It’s important to know you won’t be left high and dry in the event you need answers or support immediately. Often times pressing machine problems arise unexpectedly and your search for help may take you back to your oil analysis report. Do you get a human voice to talk to when you call? Is there any on line communication available? How quick does someone get back to you? What sort of expertise do the lab personnel maintain? These questions are best asked directly.

3. Are Web-based management reporting tools available?
Web-based management tools make managing and administering your oil analysis program much easier. With web based tools you can view reports, order supplies, print labels, monitor your sampling activity, import data, and many other functions. The time you’ll save and aggravation you will avoid using a web-based interface makes the answer to this question critical in your decision-making process.

4. Does the lab automatically include analytical ferrography?
Ferrography is a technique for analyzing the wear particles present in fluids that indicate mechanical wear. Performing ferrography enables the analyst to see the whole picture. It is important that your lab takes testing to the next step by performing analytical ferrography on abnormal samples. Ask the lab if and when they perform ferrography and what they charge for the test. It’s important to determine whether a lab offers ferrography because there are some instances where the standard tests uncover problems but may not be able to quantify the extent of the abnormality.

5. How are alarm levels compared?
In assessing machine condition, it is essential not only to look at the machine’s current and past data, but also compare that particular machine with the “family” that the machine is a member. Families can be made up of machine types, manufacturers, models, and sump capacities depending on the level of information provided by the user. Statistics are calculated by looking into the database and extracting previous test results of “family” data. Family alarming produces tight limits which provide great value to the oil analysis user.

Another alarming method is to use customer specific limits. When a customer has previous knowledge of machine fault levels, it is beneficial to provide these hard limits to the lab. They can be utilized at either the machine or customer level to trigger appropriate alarms. If there is not enough information identifying a machine but there is historical information for the specific sampling point, alarms can be set by using linear regression.

Gourmet Coffee - Make Your Own

Looking for something different than your ordinary cup of coffee? You can make your own gourmet coffee, and you can be on your way with just a few ingredients.

There are two different ways to get this accomplished: by adding flavored syrups or by using natural ingredients. In the case of flavored syrups, there are a few general rules to bear in mind. Most flavored syrups are flavored with cane sugar which is generally sweeter that other flavorings that may be used such as fructose or corn syrup. Read the label contents and purchase according to your personal preference. Another thing to be aware of is that some syrups are preservative free. While the flavor may be more intense with these syrups, the shelf life will be shorter than other syrups that use preservatives.

Less is more in the case of flavored syrups- before you pour the coffee adding just a small amount of syrup to the bottom of the cup. More can always be added according to your personal taste. There are many syrups available: Almond, Vanilla and Hazelnut are some common ones, but then there are other interesting flavors such as Macadamia Nut , Crème de Banana, or Black Currant.

Adding natural flavorings is a great way to make your own flavored coffee without adding any extra calories. Adding a whole vanilla bean to your canister of coffee or adding a cinnamon stick can add a new dimension of flavor to your everyday cup of coffee. You could also add these flavorings in powdered form as well to your coffee before you brew if you didn’t want to flavor all of your coffee at once. Try adding a citrus peel such as lemon or orange for a different twist. Adding a bit of liqueur such as Irish Crème or Amaretto can be a wonderful surprise to your guests at the end of a wonderful meal.

These are just a few suggestions- get out there and experiment. Mix and match your flavors- try some caramel syrup with some vanilla flavored coffee. Almond syrup with a dash of Irish Crème added Cinnamon coffee with a twist of orange. The combinations and flavor variations are endless. Happy brewing!

You heard right. Not Sparta, but AFRICA! I finally watched Blood Diamond last night, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Danny Archer, Djimon Hounsou as Solomon Vandy, and Jennifer Connelly as Maddy Bowen. The movie is about the illegal trafficking of diamonds in Africa: diamonds are harvested in Sierra Leone, smuggled into Liberia, and from there, sold to the rest of the world. The film tries to take on a documentary approach, meant to inform the world about the horrors behind those pretty little stones, but who are they kidding. Leonard DiCaprio doesn’t do documentaries. This movie is meant to entertain the masses. And that it does, quite well in fact; Blood Diamond was nominated for 5 Oscars and a Golden Globe.

Now onto the plot: Danny Archer is a white man that likes to smuggle diamonds. Solomon Vandy is a black man that likes to catch fish. Maddy Bowen is a white woman that likes to write stories. How do they all fit together? Let me tell you. Actually, I won’t. Watch the movie and find out, because describing plot is painfully boring for me; I’m here to write about what I thought of the movie. But since I’m a nice guy, and some of you may not have seen the movie, I’ll give a brief run-through of what happens. Revolutionary United Front (RUF) insurgents attack Solomon’s fishing village. Guns are fired, villagers are killed. RUF kidnap Solomon’s son, and Solomon is forced to become a slave. Imagine that, slavery in Africa. While slaving away near a diamond mine, Solomon finds a big diamond. He buries it. Government soldiers find the RUF mine, and more guns are fired. Solomon ends up in jail.

Archer trades illegal arms to RUF forces for diamonds. He tries to bring the diamonds across the Liberian border, but is caught. Archer ends up in jail. Archer and Solomon meet. Archer learns of the big diamond, and offers to help Solomon find his family in return for the diamond. Both agree, and the adventure begins. Oh, and somewhere along the way they meet Maddy Bowen, who exchanges her services as a reporter, including the ability to cut lines, obtain helicopter rides, and make peace with random African tribes, for Archer’s secrets on diamond smuggling. That pretty much sums it up.

Note: Here come some possible spoilers.
The themes of the story are rather cliche. Archer fits the role of bad guy turns good guy. Initially, he is a ruthless, greedy, and all around shady character. The audience is led to believe that as soon as he has his hands on the diamond, he will get rid of Solomon. Or at least I was. Up to the very end, I kept thinking that Archer would pull a gun on Solomon at any moment. I even had a theory that when Archer handed the diamond over to Solomon, it was a fake one, and that he was still planning to betray him. Shows how much I believe in humanity. But alas, morality and humanity triumphs! Archer becomes a changed man, and gives up his personal dreams for the greater good of Africa.

This leads us to the next theme: destiny. Early on in the film, Archer has a conversation with his long time mentor, Colonel Coetzee, played by Arnold Vosloo. Coetzee points out that they are both tied to the land, namely Africa. They were born there, lived there, and will die there. And that’s exactly what happens. Despite Archer’s best efforts at getting off the continent, he does not make it out alive. He gets very close, and in fact, I think with the help of Solomon, he could have made it out of Africa. But instead, he surrenders to fate. Destiny, once again, prevails.

I thought the cinematography was nothing special. The special effects used were rather ordinary, with no particularly clever usage of the camera. Don’t get me wrong, the film still looked great. It just wasn’t very impressive in the technical sense. But the location and setting was another story. It was both impressive and fitting, really capturing the mood of the story. The rugged mountains and dense jungles show that Mother Nature still dominates Africa. Society has not yet taken hold; man is still wild and lawless. Blood is shed indiscriminately to fuel greed and lust for power. What results is a mixture of beauty and fear. Nature is beautiful in her raw form, while man is to be feared in his raw form. The amount of sheer chaos and disorder in Africa makes the average American, or me at least, feel uncomfortable. The fact that a person can do nearly anything with little or no consequence is a foreign concept. All of this lends a very exotic and dangerous feel to the film.

All in all, I would recommend seeing Blood Diamond. Its strong point is in the plot. The story is unique, and based on events that occurred in the not so distant past, thus making it seem somewhat plausible. There were, of course, a few exceptions; some of the scenes were so coincidental that I almost laughed. All I have to say is that Solomon is one lucky son of a gun. The characters were fairly well developed, so misfortunes for the main characters cause an emotional stir in the audience. It was a tragedy from the point of view of Archer, but Solomon and Maddy triumph. The film concludes that illegal diamond exporting and the exploiting of African peoples has been downsized, but still has not completely ceased.

The moral of the story, girls, is to stop demanding all those diamonds. By not asking for anymore diamonds, you can save countless African children. Forget donating a penny a day. When you buy diamonds, you support terrorists! Not to mention you can save us, guys, a pretty penny. In all seriousness, America is the largest consumer on the diamond market; nearly two-thirds of all diamonds sold are to the United States. If terrorist organizations are able to get their hands on even just a small portion of the multi-billion dollar industry, it will be enough to fuel further violence.

Oh, and what’s with the tag line “TIA - This is Africa?” We already have “This is Sparta!” from 300. Both turned out to be very successful. This might be a trend. I wonder what the next “This is Fill in the Blank!” movie will be.

RE: Exposure to air pollution worse then A-bomb fallout. Citizen article April 3,2007

My first 100 mile ride of the year.

Ottawa looked good from far as I rode in to the city on my bicycle on a plus 10 degree Celsius April 3 2007, but that changed really quickly as I got to Stittsville from Carleton Place almost immediately I started getting a sore throat and that progressed to a cough by the time I reached my first destination the Mountain Equipment CO OP on Richmond road. I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I don’t drive a car either and I never have a sore throat unless I’m sick and that only rarely happens, and you know the sad thing is that Ottawa is a relatively clean city but all those chemicals from car exhausts and what ever else people pollute the air with can’t be good for you, maybe that’s why I and everyone else who has ever had cancer got it in the first place.

It seems like a futile and enormous challenge to stop the damage that’s already been done and if I can use an analogy I would compare it to fish living in a large pond with poison in it and the fish closest to the poison suffer the worst. For the past 17 years I have lived out side of the poison but as the years go by I noticed that I wasn’t far enough away. Smog warnings never used to happen in Ottawa and we never had humidity like we have now. It scares me when the radio announces not to exercise strenuously and that the elderly, young and people with respiratory problems should stay indoors. Wake up people, I have no kids, but the children are going to be the ones to inherit this disgusting mess that modern society and big business has created. Stop being so lazy people and leave the car at home more often. I am riding my mountain bike across Canada for a second time this time I am riding off-road to bring awareness to the global warming and pollution problem.
