Business Ethics 101

Sometimes life provides us with character-defining opportunities that remain with us forever. If we’re lucky, that is. These events, which occur in both our professional and our personal lives, are significant not for their particulars, but for what they say about who we are and who we are not. It is who we become as a result of these experiences-not the experiences themselves-that is most important. This is because these “choice points” articulate our values, clarify our character, and define our integrity.

I had one such experience many years ago when I first relocated to Seattle. It’s an experience that has stayed with me because it was so profound and because, to this day, I am still both humbled and humiliated by it. I had had business cards printed, and there was an error. I called the owner of the print shop and she agreed to reprint them right away. But I never returned to the printer. My finances were very tight and I’d decided it was “better” to distribute the “bad” ones rather than pay the several hundred dollars I owed her for the new version.

My tainted integrity nagged at me for more than a year before I finally phoned the woman to apologize. I never got that far. Oh, she remembered me all right. So clearly, in fact, that during our brief conversation she recounted the entire ordeal and then concluded by telling me (with not a trace of anger, I might add): “Now I’m going to hang up because I’m not going to do business with you again.” Click.

I remember putting the phone back in the cradle and staring at it, mouth agape, for quite some time. The sting of her words was minor compared to the swell of respect and admiration I felt for this woman who so succinctly, so effortlessly, demonstrated who she was and how she stood in her business. She had no reason to prove herself. She had no need for a well-polished mission statement, a finely crafted public relations summary, or a perfectly rehearsed elevator speech. Her actions neatly defined her. When she hung up, we both knew who she was.

Author and educator Benjamin Shield once said, “We vote with our actions.” I would add that it is ultimately our intentions behind those actions, not the actions themselves, that announce to the world whether we are courageous or cowardly, whether we are leaders or merely the boss, and whether we will make a positive impact or simply take up space.

If we’re going to “do the right thing” in business, we need to ask ourselves exactly and precisely why we’re doing what we’re doing-what our intended outcome is. Is it to win, to look good, or maybe to decimate the competition? Or is it to redefine excellence, showcase exceptional skills, or create positive change? Are we trying to prove who we are, or demonstrate it? The former will result in ego-minded banter while the latter will produce camaraderie, pride, and outstanding performance. Doing the right thing requires that we permanently disengage the “autopilot” in our businesses while recommitting to the core values of our decision-making processes.

The ethics scandals that have peppered the papers for the past few years have pitted the “little guy” against the “big, bad corporations.” It’s easy for us to forget that those corporations are made up of individuals just like you and me. Had I not shared my business card story, then I’d be able to tell you that I’d never do anything like commit insider trading, manipulate my accounting books, or lie to my employees. Of course now you won’t believe me. If I could avoid paying a debt, you ask, then what else am I capable of?

Truth be told, it is likely that we are all just one little circumstance away from doing anything. With money dangling before us (or a promotion, or a big break, or adulation), it’s easy to forget who we are, to discreetly shift the line between right and wrong, and to make some shortsighted decision because the sheer pleasure (joy, greed, ego) of it looks too delicious to pass up. The question is, “Is it the right thing?”

A few weeks ago one of my coaching clients, a senior executive with one of the country’s premier retailers, told me that her company, following an enormously profitable year, decided to distribute raises and bonuses to almost all of its employees. The only people in her group not to receive additional cash were the receptionists-perhaps the people who needed it most. The reason? Under a technicality the company didn’t have to give them the funds.

My client loudly protested this travesty for two reasons: a) it was the wrong thing to do, and b) the bonuses would amount to a whopping total of $6,000-a mere 0.0024% of the company’s $250 million budget. But why risk the wrath of her colleagues? Why jeopardize the celebratory climate of the executive offices? Because it’s the only thing this leader could do and be able to look at herself in the mirror the next day. Because it was the right thing to do and she knew it. And so do you.

What does doing the right thing have to do with doing business, you ask? “Everything,” I answer. Doing the right thing defies-no, ignores-the status quo. Unless you have a seriously deteriorated character, you know when you’re doing things just because you can vs. because they’re the right thing to do.

So what does it take to do the right thing? It takes courage-the ability to do something different, something outrageous, something that’s outstanding. It takes self-trust-the ability to hear and respond to your executive intuition-to lead from the inside out because, to date, your gut reaction has never led you down the wrong path. It takes chutzpah-the ability to jump and earn your stripes on the way down. It takes character-the thing you know you have because you have never, even once, questioned whether or not you do.

So, the choices have been made, the decisions decided, the outcome awaited. Now, how do we know if we’ve done the right thing? It’s simple. It feels good. We’re proud of ourselves. Our heads are held a bit higher, our shoulders a bit straighter, our step a bit lighter. When we’ve done the right thing, we offer others explanations, not excuses, for the decisions we’ve made. When we’ve done the right thing, we don’t get defensive and look for someone else to blame. When we’ve done the right thing, our minds are free of embarrassment, humiliation, shame, and regret. When we’ve done the right thing, we don’t have to ask ourselves if we’ve done the right thing. We just know it.

By the way, if you know the printer who taught me that lesson in Business Ethics 101, please tell her how grateful I remain and that I said thank you. Whatever price I paid wasn’t enough.

A Day Of National Humiliation, Fasting, and Prayer

In light of our celebrating our Savior’s Resurrection, I share this resolution by President Abraham Lincoln. This is what God asks of us: repentance! Christ died to give us the gift of salvation, but there is our part, and this is admitting our sins. That word sin, too, is still in the dictionary!

On this sacred Good Friday, let us ask God’s forgiveness, and let us pray for all nations!

A Day Of National Humiliation, Fasting, and Prayer
in the The United States Of America on April 30, 1863

WHEREAS, the senate of the United States, devoutly recognizing the Supreme Authority and Just Government of Almighty God, in all the affairs of men and of nations, has by a resolution, required the President to designate and set apart a day for National prayer and humiliation:

And whereas, it is the duty of nations as as well as of men, to owe their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord:

And, in so much as we know that, by His divine law, nations, like individuals, are subjected to punishments and chastisements in this world, may we not justly fear that the awful calamity of civil war, which now desolates the land, may be but a punishment inflicted upon us for our presumptuous sins, to the needful end of our national reformation as a whole People? We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth, and power as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us! It behooves us, then to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.

Now, therefore, in compliance with the request, and fully concurring in the views of the Senate, I do, by this proclamation, designate and set apart Thursday, the 30th day of April, 1863, as a day of national humiliation, fasting, and prayer. And I do hereby request all the People to abstain on that day from their ordinary secular pursuits, and to unite, at their several places of public worship and their respective homes, in keeping the day holy to the Lord, and devoted to the humble discharge of the religious duties proper to that solemn occasion.

All this being done, in sincerity and truth, let us then rest humbly in the hope authorized by the Divine teachings, that the united cry of the Nation will be heard on high, and answered with blessings, no less than the pardon of our national sins, and the restoration of our now divided and suffering country, to its former happy condition of unity and peace.

In witness whereof, I have here unto set my hand, and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.
Done at the city of Washington this thirtieth day of March, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the United States the eighty-seventy.

By the President:
ABRAHAM LINCOLN

William H. Seward, Secretary of State

Why PVC Is A Good Choice For Exterior Home Doors

Exterior doors are often the first thing to be changed in a home improvement or remodelling project. That’s because exterior home doors say a lot about your home and you want to make sure that the property looks attractive. PVC exterior home doors have a lot of advantages over wooden doors. UPVC or vinyl outside doors are highly resistant to weathering, so you won’t end up with peeling paint as you do with some wooden doors. A PVC door will last for years, while a wooden door will need to be repainted often or replaced because of rotting timber.

Many people will be concerned about the appearance of their exterior home doors, but there’s no need for concern. UPVC external doors are available in a variety of styles. If you don’t like the appearance of the standard white vinyl door, consider a UPVC door with a light or dark wood effect for your remodelling project. It will have the attractiveness of a wooden outside door, but will be far more durable.

To add to the attractiveness of exterior doors, your home improvement project can include glass panels to allow light to stream into the house. This is particularly useful for providing natural light to dark areas of your home. The effect can be achieved by adding stained glass panels or other decorative panels to a PVC door. Some panels are almost clear, while others are heavily frosted. You will need to think about balancing the need for light with the need for privacy to decide which option is best for your PVC doors.

As well as being suitable for exterior doors, vinyl can be used for other doors around the home to create a uniform design for your home improvement project. You can use UPVC for all exterior home doors, including sliding patio doors, French doors, conservatory doors and doors that open onto porches. PVCU patio doors and other PVCU doors are also very secure, which is an additional benefit for the homeowner. The click and turn locking mechanism makes sure that the doors are weathertight and make it difficult for burglars to break in.

Home improvement articles suggest that when you install exterior doors, you should also give some thought to replacement windows. Windows replacement can be handled by the same companies that provide exterior home doors. Double glazed windows (also known as double glass windows) will reduce heat loss from your home and will make your central heating run more efficiently, saving you money and being kind to the environment.

Like exterior doors, UPVC windows are available in a range of corresponding finishes and you can also have leaded panes and other window effects for added style. Both sash windows and casement windows are available, and you may also select tinted windows in areas where you wish to reduce the effects of sunlight.

When reinstalling windows and PVC doors, give some thought to adding a PVC conservatory to your house. This can add value to your home and will complement vinyl replacement windows and exterior home doors.

Orlando International Airport is the busiest airport in the state. More passengers fly into this airport than any other in Florida. Thirty four million people visit this popular tourist destination each year. The airport is located close to Kennedy Space Center and is designated at an emergency landing site for the Space Shuttle.

Prior to the construction of the airport, the land was an Air Force Base. The Orlando Jet Port was later added as a small airport on the base. In 1975, the airport was constructed on the site. The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority was formed to manage the airport.

Orlando International Airport consists of one main terminal building. People movers are used to bring passengers to the four terminals within the main building. When you arrive at the airport, you will need to go to the north side of the building. Check in and baggage claim areas are both located here.

Tips for Orlando International Airport

Security is a big concern in the post 9/11 world. Security is tight at this airport. You will need to arrive early to allow time for security procedures. Be sure to have two forms of identification with you. Pay for your tickets with a credit card and bring it with you to help avoid hassles on your trip and to ensure you have the proper identification.

Plan to be at the airport two hours before your flight departs. This allows you plenty of time to check your baggage, get through security and find your gate. Since this airport is very busy, lines can get long. This is especially true during busy travel times. Confirm the status of your flight before you leave home. This can be done on the Internet or by calling the airline prior to leaving home.

Airport officials offer tips for keeping your baggage safe at the airport. Keep your bags with you at all times. Never set your bag down and walk away from it when waiting in line or at the gate. Don’t accept any packages or items from anyone you don’t know. This will prevent anyone from tampering with your luggage. Unfortunately, in today’s world, these measures are necessary for your safety and the safety of your fellow passengers.

Renting a Car at Orlando International Airport

Once you arrive at the airport, you may want to rent a vehicle. Many hotels and resorts offer shuttle services to the airport and to certain parks and attractions. If you plan to spend all of your time at the resort and parks, this may be sufficient. However, if you want to spend time outside the parks, you may want your own transportation.

There are six rental companies located at the airport for convenience in renting a car. In addition, there are seventeen companies located off the airport, but nearby. Courtesy shuttles are available to these airports. To get the best deal, compare prices from each company on the internet. Prices vary depending on the type of car you are renting and the time of year you will be visiting Orlando. Once you find the best deal, reserve your car online. How Can Deconstruction Be A Reconstruction?

Our 1960’s signaled the era of postmodernism - deconstructive postmodernism. Fragmentation, indetermination, and plurality led us to the situation of disillusionment, alienation and estrangement that generated grotesque characters in the world. The problem with grotesque characters is that they know the world but world does not know them. So, the deconstructive postmodernism externally seems to support marginalized and silenced voices but at the same time it also dislocates and displaces the most authentic and most intellectual voices from the society. As we know, equality is not possible but as a postmodern personality we should at least hope for equity. Let not displaced and alienated one class from the society while uplifting the marginalized class.

Can we not blend a transcendental and immanent method to make this world a harmonious one as is expected by, hopefully, all? Digging out the history is very interesting but leaving it with holes without reconstructing is probably not a constructive way of performance. If reconstruction is not possible, do not go for the destruction. Both reconstruction and destruction should simultaneously go together with a constructive vision. One should not forget “anxiety of influence” of Bloom while remembering Derrida and Foucault. Association of sensibility is what we are looking for - a blend of reason and passion.

Shaking the foundation of metaphysics by dismantling the logocentricism and hierarchy with the play of binary opposition is a great job. However, leaving a chaos by destablishing order, system and structure without a proper finalization is nothing but an incomplete job. Now, the job of today’s critics is to pay attention on it and complete the job that has been left, intentionally or unintentionally, incomplete by the 60s’, 70s’ early 80s’ postmodernists and poststructuralists.

Fear of Flying? Then Tame The Gremlin

Gremlin Management.

In the area that we work in, Gremlin Management is a great technique that you can use with helping yourself to overcome a fear or limitation you are imposing upon yourself. Also, once you have learned it, you can use it with other individuals one on one or with groups on mass.

This came from working with a client recently who seemed determined to undermine his ability to change an aspect of his life due to negative self talk.

Simply saying to somebody, You ought to think positive is not always enough.

This is a light hearted and practical technique that I hope you like.

This Gremlin Management idea applies to anyone that wants to either stop doing something they want to stop or start doing something they want to start.

For example, if someone is trying to get better at public speaking, typically, as soon as they entertain the idea that they might do some public speaking, the Gremlin starts. Same with people that have a fear of flying. Part of you wants to do it but another part seems to be getting in the way.

The Gremlin is just another way at recognising that we sometimes have a voice in our heads telling us we are no good at something. Or, we will fail if we even try!

Some people call this The Inner Dialogue, others call it the Self Talk, others may call it the Internal Chatterbox or even Cognitive Chatter. Whatever you call it, most people accept that there are voices in our heads.

What is the difference between people walking around outside with voices in their heads and those locked up with voices in their heads?

A waiting list.

Now, you have control of the inner voice but some clients do not believe this. Here is how you go about helping yourself or someone else to regain control of the Chatterbox.

First of all, this is how you do the Gremlin management with yourself. Once you can do it yourself, you can do it with other people individually or with groups of people.

1 Take a moment to listen to the voice as you about to do the thing that you fear or do not think that you will be good at. What does the voice sound like? Is it male or female? Is it old or young? Is it harsh or soft?

For example, I want to speak in front of others but I know it is going to be rubbish or I will just freeze and not speak.

I am about to board this aircraft but I just KNOW it is going to crash.

2 There are many parts to the mind. One part of you wants to do the thing that you are about to do. Another part of your mind is trying to protect you from failure or feeling bad. The part that is trying to protect you is the Gremlin. Give the Gremlin a name.

3 Think of the situation that you want to go into and notice when the Gremlin voice begins. In your head, thank the Gremlin by name and then replace the voice with another voice saying something like

Thank you Harold - or whatever Gremlin is called - I am going to do something different today. I am going to do this scary thing and if it goes wrong then that is okay too. Or, I CAN do it actually and I WILL.

4 The more times you practice this, the more natural and instinctive it will become to take control of the chatterbox.

5 Practice this lots of times where you feel safe before trying it in the arena that you fear. This makes it easier when you are less feeling less resourceful than normal. For example, waiting until you approach the speaking podium or walking up the steps of the aircraft is leaving it too late to start practicing.

I realize that this may seem a bit weird to some of you reading but why not try it. This is a very practical thing we can do in our heads whenever something is stopping us from doing what we want to do and no-one needs to know what we are doing. Also, once you get good at doing it for yourself, you can help others.

If this idea has appealed to you and you want to know more, please have a look at Taming Your Gremlin by Richard David Carson

Today patients have never had more options for whitening their teeth, including over the counter preparations like Crest Whitestrips, in-office light assisted tooth whitening(in an hour or two) or using trays made be the dentist to be used at home to gradually lighten and whiten teeth(one to three weeks). It wasn’t always this easy!

In the 1980’s in -office light assisted bleaching was an option, but it was more time consuming , took many more sessions and was a much more expensive than it is today. Accordingly, dentists looked for a better, more affordable way and tray bleaching was developed using vinyl mouthguards designed for preventing tooth grinding and inserting a 10% carbamide peroxide solution in the tray and having the patient wear it over night for 3-6 weeks until the desired shade change had occurred.

Now, we have improved techniques and either in-office chair side tooth whitening or custom tray bleaching are relatively affordable and popular options. In our office we utilize the Zoom whitening system for in office tooth bleaching procedures in an hour or two. We also like using a 16% carbamide solution placed in trays and worn at night to gradually lighten the teeth at night. Both techniques have pros and cons, but both work well!

The pros for Zoom are fast results, and the procedure is done for you, with out any work on your part. The cons are that there is no easy way to touch-up the result and there is some fading in the first two weeks. Also there is no way of knowing exactly how white your teeth will get after and hour or two of bleaching under the Zoom lamp.

The pros for custom tray bleaching are that the end point is flexible( you have some control of how white to make your teeth) and you can touch up the result by wearing the trays for another night or two after 6 months. The cons are that some people don’t want to be bothered wearing trays at night and 3 weeks can seem like a long time to some patients!

Walking on a treadmill can rate a big 10 for fitness, but it can also rate a big 10 for boredom, too. The problem, whether you do this at a gym or at home, is that there is simply nothing else to do while you are walking. So here’s how to liven up your exercise routine and at the same time pump in some welcome variety and extra fitness.

The idea behind this is to add in periods of increased activity called intervals. You begin by speeding up your pace for a minute every five minutes and simply repeat this over the middle part of your exercise.

If your exercise is a short one of fifteen minutes or less one minute in five is hard to do so you can use one minute in three or four or whatever seems right. Ideally you want, at least, three (and preferably more) fast intervals.

There is no need to make a substantial increase at first and just a variation in pace will be quite sufficient. You will find that this will soon be noticed in your legs as the workout progresses so my advice is to take it slowly until you see how you progress and become used to the effect.

You can use a clock or stopwatch to time the intervals and the periods in between and, of course, you have to concentrate to get the intervals starting at the right time.

Many people are amazed at how just this small step turns the exercise into a whole new routine that requires a lot more concentration. The effect, of course, is that the routine seems much quicker now that boredom is replaced by concentration.

But it’s not just this. The increased periods of activity, even modest increases for just a single minute each five minutes, makes the exercise harder to do and so produces a better fitness result. I have also found that it makes the exercise more satisfying to do.

Try this for a week and then, to vary the routine, you can try altering the increased activity periods to make them longer or, if you are brave, more strenuous. Going on from this, you can change them to running with walking, adding in the appropriate arm movements.

To get up to speed try adding in a running period at the end and increase this to one in the middle as well until you can add in several small sessions of running. Be aware that this takes the exercise to the whole new level and so be careful if you are not used to vigorous exercise.

Finally a word about safety. Make sure that you have a means to stop the treadmill automatically if something happens and also be aware of messages from your body. Know and use a target heart rate related to your age and lifestyle and never exercise beyond safe limits.

If you are comfortable exercising on your treadmill but feel a need to take this to the next level then try adding in intervals. Not only will it help banish boredom but, as an added bonus, you will get a better and more useful workout.
