Do you do Reiki energy treatments for your family and friends? Have you thought about turning your interest into a business? If you’d like to know a little more about how to develop a Reiki practice, here are a few tips about the legal aspects of the business.

Licensing
Right now (2007) in the U.S. there are no government-issued licenses to practice Reiki (as there are for doctors, nurses, etc.). But Reiki might be included in your state or local massage licensing laws - if there are any - so it’s a good idea to check those to see whether they cover Reiki. There’s a good chance they won’t. But if they do, you’ll have to get licensed to do massage therapy in order to practice Reiki.

This kind of licensing is different from business licensing. While you might not need a “license to practice,” you’ll almost certainly need a business license. Business licensing requirements differ, so check with your city/county administrative office or local chamber of commerce for more information.

Insurance
There are many different kinds of insurance for individuals and businesses, but what I’m referring to here is liability insurance. This may not seem important since you’re not manipulating tissue (like a massage therapist does), but it is. When you give someone a Reiki treatment you’ll be touching them with the intent to facilitate healing, and some people will see that as medical - especially if they have a medical condition. In this lawsuit-happy country it’s best to be protected.

Most professional massage therapy organizations offer liability insurance with membership. This insurance usually also covers other modalities - like Reiki. And if you don’t do massage, don’t worry - most of these organizations will accept Reiki practitioners.

Taxes
If you’ve always worked for someone else you may have noticed taxes being deducted from your paycheck. However, you may not have realized that you were paying only a portion of the total tax; your employer was paying the other portion. When you’re self-employed, or working for someone else on a contract basis, you still have to pay taxes, but now they’ll be higher because you’ll have to cover the employer’s portion as well as your own.

So, the bad news is - more taxes. The good news (of a sort) is that you won’t be paying them in one lump sum every April. Instead, you’ll be paying quarterly, which is at a least a bit easier on your budget. Just be sure to save some of your earnings, preferably in an interest-bearing account, so the money’s there when you need to make a payment.

Taxes of any kind can be confusing. The IRS has an entire website full of information and forms and also toll-free numbers to help you out. But if your business grows you’ll probably want to enlist the services of a bookkeeper or accountant. Yes, it’s an added expense, but you may be able to keep costs down by trading services.

Final Thoughts
Legal issues can sound confusing, but they don’t have to be. When you’re just starting out try to take it one step at a time, dealing with each item as you need to. You’ll find that once you get past the initial steps things will smooth out. Then you’ll be able to focus once again on why you’re doing all of this - to help people with Reiki energy.

This value shows that you have a love of life. You are self-expressive and have an artistic streak. You tend to be easily bored and to grow restless. You also tend to be a popular person. You need to avoid being careless in your work.

Physical (4)

This value shows that you know how to work hard. You probably have some skill with your hands. You need something to do all the time or you become bored and restless.

Physical (5)

This value shows that you adapt to change and can cope extremely well in a crisis. You are very competitive and work well with others. You tend to be athletic; literally a bundle of energy.

Physical (6)

This value shows that you maintain a balance between your home life and your work in equal measure. You have a creative streak and like to be surrounded by beauty. You are a good team player.

This value shows that you are a loner. You hate crowds and noise, and love serenity and solitude. Most people do not understand you.

Physical (8)

As you already know if you’ve read our other easy backpacking recipes, it is very important to eat nutritiously and drink plenty of water while backpacking. We’ve already mentioned a few meal ideas for breakfast and lunch, as well as a few energizing backpacking snack suggestions.

Dinner is the backpacking meal that most backpackers settle down and truly enjoy. Once you have set camp for the evening and settled in, a hot and hearty meal will revitalize your body and get you prepared for another day of active hiking.

Backpacker’s Sushi
Cook 1 cup instant rice with boiling water.
Cut nori (seaweed rollers for sushi found at international grocers or sections) into quarters
Place a spoonful of rice on the nori and add a spoonful of tuna from foil packet
Roll the sushi and dip in wasabi, horseradish, or soy sauce (take-out packets)

Seafood Pasta
Cook ½ package pasta (fettuccini, tortellini, etc)
Heat a little bit of olive oil, salt, and garlic with salmon or tuna (foil package)
Toss with parmesan cheese and enjoy!
Variation: chicken (canned) and sundried tomatoes

Just Add Water Backpacking Feast
In a small sandwich bag combine:
¾ cup instant potatoes
¾ cup dry stuffing
Dried cranberries
Beef or turkey jerky pieces
Powdered gravy mix
At camp, stir in boiling water and let stand before eating.

Country Chicken and Rice
Combine 1 cup instant rice with 1 ½ cups boiling water
Stir in one packet onion soup mix
Add 1 small can of chicken
Stir until warm

Fiesta Trail Chicken
In a small sandwich bag combine:
1 cup instant rice
1 packet tomato soup mix
Spices (chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, etc.)
At camp, add 1 ½ cups boiling water to dry ingredients and stir in a small can of chicken.

Other dinner ideas include:

Small canned hams that require no refrigeration
Fresh vegetables for first night dinners (broccoli, corn on the cob, green beans, etc.)
Soup cups
Canned foods (ravioli, Spam, beanie weenies, beef stew, etc.)

Salty foods are good for replenishing your body to avoid dehydration. Eat foods that are high in calories and protein. If you packed canned foods, look for products with easy open lids. Otherwise, remember to pack a can opener, like the versatile Leatherman Juice S2 Multi-tool.

The most energizing and replenishing snacks for the trail is gorp, or modern versions of trail mix. Try these gorp recipes for variety.

Chocolate Lover’s Gorp
2/3 cup dried apricots
2/3 cup dried cherries
2/3 cup dried blueberries
2/3 cup almonds
2/3 cup peanuts
1 cup white chocolate chips
1 cup dark chocolate chips

The Trail is on Fire Gorp
Heat 2 tbsp oil in a skillet
Brown 2 cups puffed rice cereal and 2 cups raisin bran, stirring constantly
Spread the cereal on a baking sheet and cook at 250° for 30 minutes.
Toss cooled cereal with:
½ cup Spanish peanuts
½ cup cashews
¼ cup raisins
¼ cup dried dates
¼ cup dried jalapeño slices
½ tsp salt
1 tsp chili powder
¼ tsp cumin
2 Tbsp sugar

Midnight Lounge is the latest release from Smooth Jazz Star Jody Watley, and I can only think of one word to describe this CD… AWESOME!

I wish it weren’t the case but, it’s not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. Recently I have met three couples wanting to take exotic honeymoon trips without spending any money. But how do you ask your guests for cash instead of useless gifts? The rules of burning fat and maintaining muscle are fairly simple. Fat only burns in the presence of oxygen. The process is called beta oxidation. Oxidation increases progressively during training. The rate of oxidation is specifically determined by the energy requirements of the muscle(s) in use, fatty acid delivery to the muscle (more specifically the muscle mitochondria), and the use of other sources of energy. The oxidative response of the muscle to proper training will also deny the fatty acids to rebuild on adipose tissue and allow even more use of fatty acids to skeletal muscle.(4) The big kicker and payoff for oxidation to continue is lypolysis . Lypolysis is the breakdown of fatty acids stored in fat cells (2). Bad news is the more advance you become at training your body the harder you have to train next time. The good news is the more your body is imposed to this demand for fat oxidation the more allotted fat it will oxidize. Slightly confused yet?

It is a never ending process of getting one step ahead of your body. The more endurance savvy your body becomes the more efficient it will become with fat oxidation. What happens is your body will increase oxidation of fat BUT lipolysis will not increase. At this point the human body is saving you a lot of energy in your exercise sessions. In order, to lose more fatty tissue now the body’s composition must enhance muscle and size OR the endocrine system must become more at tune to attacking body fat and leaking GH (growth hormone). Supplementation of steroids is one option bodybuilder types have used to start up lipolysis again. For those wishing to do so naturally, putting the body into a ketogenic state from time to time should do the trick (more on this in a later article). Our main purpose is to increase fat oxidation to the point it is as optimal as LEGALLY and humanly possible.

A smart colleague of mine explained it like this:

“A Honda Civic and Lamborghini Diablo sit in idle at a stoplight. Which one burns more fuel?”

It would be the Diablo for those who don’t know much about cars. The reason….it has a bigger engine under the hood or trunk…. whatever. This relates to us as well. Honda Civic type people are too efficient at what they do. They can not expect any change, unless they get a bigger engine (more muscle). Diablo type body is there …..It’s that perfect body. It oxidizes (fuel) fat at a high rate no need to change just hold on and maintain.

One way of getting fat to burn is using aerobic type output. Another way to get fat to burn is a process called EPOC (excessive post exercise oxygen consumption). A third way is certain combinations of food will cause a thermo effect when eaten. But, we will keep to the training methods for this article.

The human body has a main purpose to survive. Looking as good as you can naked doesn’t quite fall in the body’s protocol. The body will maintain as much muscle that is needed to meet the demands of your life on any given day. Also, the body must protect itself from a possible nuclear winter……and the way the world is going, it might just need it….so it insulates the vital organs (mainly around the core area) with adipose tissue (fat).

Fat oxidation can happen by aerobics and other forms of energy systems training. A dreadful long term 25k jog on the treadmill will yield fat oxidation, but it will also use just about everything else in the body to get done. Aerobics burns calories. There is a supposed fat burning zone and caloric burning zone. The fat burning zone is at a lower heart rate. This theoretically will allow for the body to only use fat. The caloric burning zone is higher and will burn calories including calories coming from fat. The major problem with the fat burning zone is the gawd forsaken length of time you have to do it in. It simply is not optimal or efficient for most lifestyles to do aerobics for close to an hour. Not only that, the amount of fat is very minimal and your body easily adapts and prevents anymore major caloric burning. The second type is the caloric zone. This type of aerobics will be a shorter term for time. It is much more optimal in time, but it comes with a fallback. It burns fat and can easily burn muscle up as well. One way to prevent or minimize the cannibalization of the hard earned muscle is to do resistance training before aerobics. Most likely the body will not make a meal out of the muscles that were just used.

Also, resistance training uses more fat as fuel than aerobics. This comes with another catch. The body attempts to set up an allotment of fatty acids needed for a given workout. If the workout was efficient enough it can be coupled with a form of aerobics training to get the after burn effect. Another form of aerobics is high intensity interval training (HIIT). This method can be a hybrid between aerobics and resistance training. More effectively it is a maximal/ low impact aerobic training effort. HIIT can be coupled with training to make the fat oxidation process as fast as humanly known. For average Joe or Jane, fat oxidation with aerobics is its highest at a low to moderate intensity. However, advanced to elite athletes will find the highest fat oxidation when more a demanding intensity is placed on the body (5, 2). Maximum oxygen consumption type intensity would be a wise choice for a more advanced athlete/trainee. This training is about 3 -5 minutes long. 80 -85% of max force must be applied for short bursts, while longer duration can fall to moderate max force (1).

EPOC is an effect more than a way of training. Although fat oxidation will happen during a resistance training session, it is only after doing resistance training that the body will go through EPOC. What it actually does is attempt to bring itself to a recovery “normal” state, after the trauma of the session. The body actually produces a more fat oxidation effect as it calms itself and recovers. This effect can happen up to a few hours after training. Aerobics alone will most likely produce a catabolic effect. Hence, a more moderate to low intensity of training will allow for greater fat oxidation (2, 3, 5). Carbohydrates (glycolysis) metabolism is the predominant method the body uses when being hit with a high intensity workout. This will also block fat oxidation. (2, 4) Training will also have to elicit bigger muscles and more joint synergy for optimal fat oxidation. So, don’t waste time with leg curls, tricep kickbacks and other small time body movements. (2)

When it comes to burning the maximum amount of fat while sparing the muscle, these two methods should be combined. First, resistance training will spark the flame that begins to grow as the session goes. Next aerobics will take the flame and bring about an inferno. Finally, the EPOC effect will continue the fat burning for hours after training. This is fat oxidation at its finest and the key to shedding the unwanted fat and maintaining muscle.

It’s a jungle out there on the Internet, and everyone is busy fighting for survival. Everyone wants a slice of the profit churning machinery the web has become, and why not? However churning out your own moolah from the net is not an easy task. Hundreds of people try to do the same every day and fail miserably. You however need not be one of them.

To succeed on the net all you need to do is learn a few basic Internet advertising tricks. Supplement these with a few other web promotion devices and watch yourself go from height to height.

One of the basic methods of Internet advertising is putting your website URL on all your correspondence. Put your website on your snail mails and emails. When emailing most people send little more than the mandatory return address (which is sent by default anyway). However don’t stay restricted to this, do remember to send your website URL as well. This is how most good businessmen gain their edge over others.

Don’t stay put just at that include your website address even with your snail mails. Put it not just on all your professional but also your personal letters. This way not just your professional associates but also your family members etc. will also drop in on your site.

Also try and pump out a few articles on your own subject. If your writing skills are not worth writing home about get them ghost written. Put these on online e-zines and online article directory. At the end of these articles put your website URL and a little about yourself. Don’t be very elaborate in these articles but write enough to rouse your readers’ interest. Tickle their curiosity buds and watch them drop in at your site for more.

Spending quality family time together is one of the best things you can do for your children. In today’s fast paced society, it is often hard to find time for everyone to come together for fun family activities, but even simple events that only take a few minutes can create lasting childhood memories. Many fun family activities can quickly become cherished family traditions. Try these family fun suggestions to build strong, loving family bonds.

1.Play a game. Traditional board games, jigsaw puzzles, and even silly childhood games are fun activities families can enjoy together. Have a Scrabble tournament or a tic-tac-toe championship match. Play an outdoor game of Duck, Duck, Goose or hide a straw inside and play “hot or cold” until someone finds it. Games are a great way to have quality family fun and quick games only take a few minutes!

2.Make a family treasure. Bring everyone together to create something personal that tells about your family. Make a totem pole from a variety of items to represent each family member or work together to make a family banner. Create a coat of arms for your family using everyone’s input. Build a time capsule together, create a family scrapbook for a special event, or make trading cards together as a family. These memories will create more fun family activities when you share them in the future!

3.Communicate. Communication is one of the most important keys to a successful relationship. Make a family mailbox together to encourage more communication between family members. You can decorate a shoebox together or create a more elaborate mailbox. Use it to leave messages and notes of encouragement to one another. To help family members stay more informed with one another, create a family newsletter together. Give everyone a section to write and pair younger children with a parent or older sibling. Once a month or each week, print up a family newsletter to tell about important dates for games or recitals, special achievements, and anything else your family can think of to include!

4.Eat together. Meal time is a great way to spend quality family time and breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so set aside a special time each week for a family breakfast. Go out to a restaurant, buffet, or bagel shop for a special breakfast treat or pack some muffins and fruit with a blanket and enjoy a family breakfast picnic at the park or in the backyard!

5.Take a family outing. Set aside a day each month for fun family activities away from home. Take an educational outing to the zoo or a museum or plan a hike at a local state park. Go for a drive through the country, see a movie, or go out for ice cream. There are all types of fun things families can do together! To create more memories, give everyone a disposable camera and make a photo journal together.

Sharing in fun family activities can strengthen family ties and build healthy, longlasting relationships. Quality family time also boosts children’s self esteem and encourages healthy social development. Make time for fun family activities in your house on a regular basis.
