Global Warming - Is The Bush II Government Pursuing A Policy Of Genocide By Proxy

The legendary Indian spiritual leader Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) once said: “The earth has enough for the needs of all but not the greed of a few.” His words have since proved to be quite prophetic!

The world today is in chaos and by that I’m not merely referring to the tumult taking place in the Middle East; what I’m talking about is the imminent extinction of hundreds of millions of people as a result of global warming. In both scenarios the United States plays a central role!

I have already pretty much detailed out how and why global warming is happening and which nations are most responsible for its acceleration, as well as who’s doing what and who is not to rectify the situation in my article entitled: Global Warming–How It Could Spark World War III.

That said, I’ve included a list of figures below to illustrate to what extent each nation/region is responsible for greenhouse gas pollution in the atmosphere (greenhouse gases are widely held to be the engine behind the accelerated global warming seen today):

USA: 30.3%
Europe: 27.7%
Russia: 13.7%
South East Asia: 12.2%
South/Central America: 3.8%
Japan: 3.7%
Middle East: 2.6%
Africa: 2.5%
Australia: 1.1%

The Truth Behind The Lie

To many in marketing circles the concept of manipulation of social evidence is nothing new. Basically what it entails is manipulating tools of evidence to further one’s goals.

Thus for example, until fairly recently in internet marketing circles, the practice of manufacturing bogus testimonials was fairly widespread. The objective being to convince visitors to one’s website to purchase products on the strength of those manufactured testimonials.

In the arena of global warming much the same has been happening. In the same manner that a defense counsel in a court case will produce its own expert witness to discredit that of the prosecution (or vice versa) so has the Bush II administration paraded a string of bogus experts to decry global warming as just a myth!

In 2007 a good number of environmental scientists and climatologists publicly stated that they’d been pressurized by various Bush II factions to manipulate data to downplay the seriousness of global warming!

Which simply begs the question: why is the Bush II administration going to such lengths to hide the truth about global warming?

Snatch ‘n’ Grab Operation Gone Awry

It is now widely accepted that the invasion of Iraq had little to do with terrorism, less to do with democracy but everything to do with oil! The question still remains however, why did the US go to such lengths (which included manufacturing evidence) to illegally invade a sovereign state under what at best can be described as a thinly disguised pretext for war?

Was it merely a question of the then single remaining superpower claiming its right to wield that might as it saw fit irrespective of international law, just as Nazi Germany once did?

Or was it a case of a few vain men hoping to claim their slice of immortality through a legacy festooned with the glory of having secured new oil reserves for a nation with a quenchless thirst for the stuff?

Or perhaps the U.S. oil reserves were so desperately low that Bush II and his New World Order buddies were prepared to force a snatch and grab operation that could easily have escalated into third world war, so as to shore up those dwindled oil reserves?

Or maybe, just maybe, the U.S. desperately needed to stockpile a vast amount of oil for something far, far more sinister.

To keep at bay a monster it helped so much to create!

Threads Weaving A Disturbing Tapestry Of Events

These days more often than not fact is stranger than fiction. When we look at the Bush II Administration’s policy on global warming it is beyond perplexing why they have gone to such lengths to deny its existence.

For sure, his Have-More buddies in oil and other environmental-damaging industries have plenty to gain by muddying the waters, but what if there’s really more to this repudiation of global warming than that!

What if this is a carefully concocted plot that has been kept under wraps for years?

Here’s what we know thus far about global warming. The data has been around for well over a decade and has been readily available to government officials. Since the turn of the 21st century scientists across the globe have been warning of the extent of global warming; warnings that apparently fell on deaf ears! (Well at least as far as the Bush II administration was concerned.)

But supposing this was not actually the case.

What if the Bush II administration did listen, but only to those scientists who’d concluded that the world had reached the point of no return? And that global warming could not be reversed anytime in the foreseeable future and thus by proxy neither could its ensuing effects!

Fuelling Up For A Global Catastrophe

In other words there was no point implementing measures to curb greenhouse gas emissions (thereby slowing down global warming) and that in fact the best policy was to forge powerfully ahead and ensure that America was readied for the ensuing catastrophe no matter the cost!

If it meant manufacturing a war, so be it! If it meant causing the deaths of hundreds of millions of people to achieve that aim, so be it! After all this wouldn’t be the first time in history that the few had been sacrificed for the many! Oh! Except in this case it is the many sacrificing for the few, or more specifically, The Have-Mores!

When looked at from this perspective, that the U.S. is fuelling up for a long term global catastrophe, it all begins to make some sense! Especially considering that Saudi Arabia still has the greatest oil reserves in the world and has never said no to U.S. oil demands!

Bottom line, it is quite conceivable that the U.S. under Bush II has been insuring against (or at least trying to) a global catastrophe predominantly of its own making! But alas even the best laid plans go badly awry. Iraq didn’t turn out to be the pushover they’d expected and the oil is not gushing the way they had envisioned.

Think that such a scenario is way over the top? Think again! Remember Iraq? Remember Hurricane Katrina?

The way the Bush II government handled Katrina was so shameful that Google for some reason best known to it was compelled to replace post-Hurricane Katrina satellite imagery with pre-hurricane images on its map portal (Damage control? Trying to hide America’s shame from the rest of the world? At whose behest one wonders?).

As you can well imagine, when it came to light, the whole sordid affair was an extreme embarrassment to Google (And certainly not good for business! The search engine business thrives on the premise that results are accurate and impartial and not manipulated!).

But the point I wish to emphasize here is that if the Bush II government could shun its very own citizens (albeit mainly citizens of color) in such a cavalier fashion why would they give a damn if their actions resulted in the deaths of hundreds of millions of Africans or peoples from other parts of the globe who are going to be worst hit by global warming?

In World War II the Nazi’s genocide weapon-of-choice was hydrogen cyanide gas, what irony that in the upcoming global warming related genocide, gas too is the weapon of choice; carbon dioxide gas!

Stop Global Warming

Knowing God - Discover How You Can Know God More

You can know God as certainly as you know things in this physical world.

You become familiar with things in the physical world through your physical senses.

You have spiritual senses too. When you unearth your spiritual senses and begin to exercise them, you will get to know God and the spiritual realm. All you need to do is to learn to hear the promptings of the Holy Spirit and actually use your spiritual senses.

How do you use your spiritual senses?

Faith is the key. It’s faith that enables your spiritual senses to function, without faith, you can’t know God. To have faith, is to be sure of the things you hope for and to be certain of the things you can’t see.

Most people tend to think of the visible world as real and doubt the existence of the spiritual realm. They don’t necessarily deny that it exists - they just doubt that it’s real.

The problem is that people are so preoccupied with the world that they can see that they struggle to see the spiritual realm. But that doesn’t mean the spiritual realm isn’t real.

It’s time to break the habit of ignoring spiritual things. It’s time to move your interest from the seen to the unseen. Belief in the invisible lies at the heart of knowing God.

If you really want to know God and become more spiritual you need to become ‘other-worldly’.

“We must avoid the common fault of pushing the ‘other world’ into the future. It is not future, but present. It parallels our familiar physical world, and the doors between the two worlds are open.” Tozer

God always intended that you enter into His Spiritual Kingdom while living here on earth.

As you begin to focus more on God you will begin to see the things of the Spirit. When you are more conscious of God you will begin to taste, see, hear and experience more of Him and the spiritual realm.

As your spiritual senses become tuned to the things of the Spirit, God will become more real to you and you will be more and more aware of His presence.

Ask God to open your spiritual eyes so that you can see. Ask Him to open your spiritual ears so that you can hear Him speaking to you. If you’re serious, He’ll answer your prayer.

“… if you seek God, you’ll be able to find Him if you’re serious, looking for Him with your whole heart and soul.” Deuteronomy 4:29

8 Things You Need To Know Before Manifesting

1.Reflection. Start with a reflection of what you wish to manifest. Ask yourself if this is what you really want. Some people tend to wish haphazardly. While I do not doubt that you will eventually get what you wish and the universe will not complain with all the orders you send, the fulfillment of your wish may cause some negative effects in your life. It may cause you grief, unhappiness & frustration. So before writing down your order, reflect on it first. If you are just starting out, make some simple wishes.

2. The illusion of control. Another thing to keep in mind before you start manifesting is avoid making a wish where you wish to take control of someone else’s life. Each one of us has been granted a free will, to attempt to control another person is a clear violation of that person’s right. Imagine how it would feel if you were manipulated by another person.

More so, if you maintain a thought of becoming in control you will end up becoming controlled yourself. The more you keep obsessing a thing or a person, the more you will be controlled such that all your decisions, choices and actions are made with much consideration of that thing. Even if you know that you will not benefit from that action, you will still do it if you think it is a way of controlling the situation.

3. All creations start with a thought. It originates in the mind. Nothing can be made without it being visualized in the mind first. Once you start to think a thought and put a very powerful emotion with it, it is already a combination that will start a chain reaction towards its fulfillment. No this is not to say that it will just assemble itself into something tangible, its creation will come about by a set of orchestrated designs through opportunities. So open your self to opportunities, do not hold on to a design on how it should be done.

4. The subconscious. Our mind has 3 levels of consciousness. The one we are in when we are awake is the conscious mind. The conscious mind is filled with active thoughts passing every second. If you have noticed, there is never a moment that your mind is not thinking. We think all the time and the quality of these thoughts has a profound effect on our entire life. Most people’s thoughts is on problems & lack, no wonder most people at poor, over stressed & over worked.

The 2nd level is the subconscious mind. The subconscious is the gateway to the realization of your creation. Whatever thought it is fed will become the reality of that person. The subconscious operates when the mind is relaxed such as during meditation or hypnosis. It is the principle being used in self-improvement or to treat smoking through hypnosis. In hypnosis, the subject is put into a trance. In this state, the conscious mind is at rest making the subject open to suggestions.

The subconscious will accept anything that it is being fed. Even during waking hours, the constant repetition of a thought will cause it be embedded or retained by the subconscious mind. Constantly thinking of lack coupled with constant complains & verbalization of lack will lead the subconscious to a belief that there is indeed lack. You will create what you always think about. Lack = lack. Lack cannot be equal to abundance.

You do not need to be in a relaxed mind in order to program yourself for lack. You know why? Because most of us made a habit of thinking only this negative thought. In addition to that, we affirm it daily with our complaints and power it with emotions of frustrations. On the other hand, a positive thought is just so hard to believe in the midst of our conceived reality. If we so believe in the present reality, it is hard to think abundance without saying “Yeah right!”

5. Openness. Whatever you desire will be manifested in ways which you may not expect or planned. Your job is just to make known what you want to manifest, how it is going to be manifested is the job of the universe, God or whatever power you conceive the “source” to be. You can only think of one, two or three ways but the “source” can find or design so much more. So be open and do not limit yourself to what is present in your reality.

6. Giving. In order to receive you, must give. The mechanism that triggers the act of receiving your desires is the act of giving. If you give more, you are creating a consciousness of “having more” because you are giving. The “having more” consciousness will manifest in your reality as abundance.

7. Let Go. I have read that manifesting is like planting a seed. If you keep on digging it to check on its development, it will never grow. Seeds need to be planted on a good soil, watered frequently, given sunlight & be allowed to grow. Same with a wish, once you have already sent it out let it manifest on its own. Give it the time to grow and become what it is suppose to be.

8. Give thanks. Make a habit of giving thanks for whatever you receive, however small. A certain author of a book mentioned that whenever she had to write a check to pay her bills she would put a message of thanks because she can pay her bills. Be grateful for the things you receive & be grateful for the things you have to give. Most of all, be grateful for the things you can conceive with your mind even if you cannot conceive it with your senses yet.

Manifesting is a wonderful gift to help us achieve our ultimate potential. History has shown us the men & women who achieved more than we thought possible. They were not specially favored; the only difference is that they know how to use the power of their minds. This knowledge had been known for centuries & had been used to attract success & abundance. Whether you are experiencing small successes or none at all, manifesting is at your disposal you only have to choose.

Joann Ang. She is a traveler in this mysterious and abundant universe. She owns the website http://www.lifemagick.net which is a journal of how she has used the art of manifesting in her life. She has found that the tremendous power to enjoy the abundance of this world lies within oneself. Through this website, she hopes to share her experience with conscious creation.

Ukrainian Single Woman – Variety Is The Key

There are single Ukrainians who initially are not looking for romance but just a good company; there are also women who know exactly what they want and are desperately after it. What made both groups so focused?

The typical Ukrainian single woman is tough and delicate. She knows what she wants and how to have it. Life in this country is not easy and she has learnt to survive in many situations which even you as a male would find impossible to deal with. No wonder that so many people admire Ukrainians.

Singles usually live with their parents. Life in the country is very expensive because the salaries are low. What is worse, the economic situation has not improved for the last 17 years.

Most of the income people spend on food and beverages. The other part is spend on utilities such water and electricity. At the end the normal Ukrainian sees that their wallet is empty and yet there are things that should be paid. This stress forces many singles to look for love far beyond the boundaries of their own country.

There are different kind of people and logically there are women who want to find a husband abroad because they are feeling insecure for their future in Ukraine; there are also singles who love the challenges that are served to them in their native country and are looking for someone abroad to practice their foreign language or to exchange interests and ideas. There is one common thing between the singles from both groups: they are smart and creative companions.

Ukraine is country of contradictions. It is not a secret that the education in Ukraine is very good. There are many internationally acknowledged universities but the sad truth is that there are no employers to open positions for all the young students who graduate each year. One of the best developed sectors in the economy is the IT and here comes the contradiction, most of the IT specialist are self taught in the program languages they know and the development and design skills they have.

A lot of single women who are found in the chats, forums and communities are developers who are using internet for everything: from work to friendship. If you start a conversation with any of them soon you will be convinced that there is no power to stop the desire for progress.

Ukrainian singles use their status to find good chat partners with who they can share interests and passions for the same hobbies. And if you are from the same sector, they will be curious to know how you deal with specific problems.

Actually, to know a woman from this country means to have a friend for life. Even if you have not made any promises for dating or marriage, they are open minded enough to know that there is long way from chat to dating.

Little by little you affection may grow bigger and stronger and this is the time when you should ask yourself what your plans are for the future. To know and to have close to you Ukrainian single is great experience, it opens your eyes and makes you thank goodness that you we born and have had the chance to start a romance.

Surely how it will end depends only on you!

Necessary Steps for Lung Cancer Prevention

Research continues to show that the most common cause for lung cancer is the use of tobacco. Lung cancer typically develops over a long period of time. The first pre-cancerous changes that form in the lungs mutate and produce chemicals that result in the formation of new blood vessels. These blood vessels nurture the cancer cells. The cancer cells grow together and form a tumor. These cancer cells have the ability to easily spread to other parts of our body even before the cancer is detected. This process is known as metastasis and is one of the main reasons why lung cancer is so fast moving and life-threatening.

Lung cancers are classified as small-cell lung cancers and non-small-cell lung cancers. Non-small-cell lung cancer is further divided into three types, known as squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and large cell carcinoma. In the United States alone, about 213,380 people are estimated to be suffering from lung cancer, with nearly 160,390 deaths occurring in the year 2007. Current data shows that lung cancer accounts for 29% of all cancer deaths. About one-third of cancer and 80% of lung cancer are caused by the usage of tobacco, either directly or indirectly.

Lung cancer prevention methods are very important because of the difficulty to detect lung cancer until it is in an advanced stage, when treatments are really not effective. A few simple steps have the potential to prevent the incidence of lung cancer. Smoking and the use of tobacco products should be completely avoided or stopped. Data reveals that long-term cessation of smoking reduces the incidence of lung cancer by over 50%. Exposure to radon gas and other carcinogens like petroleum products should be avoided.

A healthy diet consisting of more vegetables and fruits is highly recommended. Nowadays, many governments have initiated active anti-smoking programs and advertising campaigns because of the strain on the health care system that tobacco products add to it. Many of them also impose high taxes on tobacco products to discourage tobacco users. Several nations have enacted strict laws towards smoking in public places including workplaces and for restricting tobacco access to minors. Studies reveal that smoking bans in workplaces effectively reduce the exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) by 72%.

Mass media anti-tobacco campaigns reduce the initiation of new persons to tobacco, decrease tobacco consumption, and increase cessation of tobacco. A sustained multi-pronged approach alone could create mass awareness about lung cancer prevention. When more and more people realize the harm caused by tobacco, consumption would decline and the effects on lung cancer cases would be immense as well as other health concerns like heart disease, stroke and hypertension.

Ukrainian Lady – Ambition and Care In The Middle of Economical Chaos

The economical situation in Ukraine is not easy and it forces many ladies to search for better chances abroad. Here is a short explanation why they actually do it.

Ukraine is located between Asia and Europe and almost all the traditions and protocol requirements are the same as in the rest of Europe and the western world. In old times it was a patriarchal society but little by little emancipation came in and today man and women are treated as equal partners.

Women are hard working and intelligent. They go to universities and are ready to be good employees and even managers. There are a few good business schools which are following the trends in the global economy. Of course here are professions that are suitable exclusively for women and others that are mainly men’s territory. However even in engineering there are good professionals who have proven their good names and approaches to the industry problems.

At the same time the traditions are very strong and the typical Ukrainian lady will follow them and defend them against everyone who is trying to break them. The most popular values are related to the family and the respect to parents.

Women live with their parents almost until they get married. Those who come from smaller cities and villages to study in universities are often controlled by their parents but not in an offensive way. Parents are always interested and play a major role in the life of their children. Girls spend a few years in university and depending on their profession they either stay in the big cities following their career or they go back home. The problem for the Ukrainian woman is that she is very well educated but the poor economical factors in the country are forcing her either to stay unemployed or to work at something that is not directly related to her studies.

Often local women are turning their eyes abroad where chances for a better life are higher. Basically they would never leave their parents and families, neither would they want to escape from their friends and places from childhood but unfortunately they do not have much choice. There are ladies who leave for a while to be baby sitters in families from the west dreaming that one day they will be one of those families and that they will have their own children to look after.

All these factors are forcing Ukrainian women to use the services of marriage agencies. They hope that with their help they will finally find someone who will accept them as they are and will love them.

There is not a general recipe for love but surely there are a lot of etiquette guidelines to follow when you have decided to go after a lady from Ukraine. Ukrainians are no exception to any rule for respect and good behavior. They will appreciate your attention and help and will make everything possible to prove that they are good wives and mothers.

Do not be afraid, start an informal chat, who knows, this could be the woman of your life.

Hugh Masekela “Sixty” Smooth Jazz Music CD Review

The exceptionally talented Smooth Jazz artist Hugh Masekela has released his CD entitled Sixty. I am very confident and happy to announce that I believe Hugh Masekela fans, and Smooth Jazz fans alike will be pleased with this one. With the release of Sixty Hugh Masekela’s artistic excellence is on full display as he has once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be his best work to date.

This CD will grab your attention right from the very first note with Fela and doesn’t let go until the very last note of the very last song Koshana, which by the way is another great track.

One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and you’ve got one of Hugh Masekela’s most impressive releases ever.

Listen to Sixty and I believe you’ll find there’s not much to dis-like about it. The songs are inspired, and the production is simply outstanding.

While this entire album is really very good some of my favorites are track 2, Thanayi, track 6, Mgewundini, and track 12, Been Such A Long Time.

My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 5, Mbombela. Good stuff!

Ukrainian Brides – What Comes After The Marriage Ceremony

As soon as you get married, you start the so called family life and things sometimes change. Here are a few ideas what to expect.

Marriage often changes people, it makes them believe that they posses each other and at the end this results in constant quarrels who to dominate the marriage.

Western women are more emancipated than those from the east. There is no doubt that they have personal task list which they follow and often they place career development on a higher stage than their family life. On the contrary eastern women are devoted to their families and are ready to drop everything in the name of their husbands and children. Ukrainians are not an exception.

The difficult moment comes when the interest within the family stand one against the other. Ukrainian brides will be more focused on your relationship and its development than anyone else. They try to keep their husbands at home as longer as it is possible and sometimes they get jealous.
They desperately want kids shortly after marriage because they do not feel full members of the society if they have not contributed to it by giving birth. Every business trip and every denial of children to come as fast as possible are considered personal failures and this makes them feel disappointed of the marriage.

They start thinking that they are not good wives and the stress raises day after day if the husband is not having the time or desire to pay a little attention to their specific needs and understandings.

What can you do in cases like this?

First of all, try to assure your bride that after the honeymoon you should go back to work, because work means money, which you need in order to put food on the table and to buy tiny presents for her and make her happy. Try to be precise and compare the lifestyle in your country to this in Ukraine. People earn more in the western countries but the standard of living there is way much different. In her homeland there are people who live a whole month with less than a hundred dollars - something that you spend in the supermarket doing your weekend shopping of foods and goods.

Ukrainian brides sometimes become jealous that you stay too much at work and not enough time with them. Well, sometimes they are right. The sad truth is modern men indeed spend too much time in offices than with their families. Do not let this happen to you.

If you are sure that you spend enough time with your wife have a chat with her to discuss her fears. Try to prove that you are loyal to her and you are not cheating. Try to share as much of your work with her, of course without breaking some corporate policies for confidentiality. Tell her about your colleagues and the problems you deal with every day. Do not make this a routine report, but reveal your emotions.

Even if your work is not that interesting, your bride will feel closer to you if she knows what are you doing. Traditional Ukrainian families share everything: from the happiness to sadness, from success to bankruptcy, from love to hatred. Normal men spend from eight to ten hours every day at their offices or workplaces. Do not pretend that this time of your life does not exist. Instead of this, make it work for you and straighten your marriage.

Ukrainian Beautiful Lady – What Is Behind The Face

Beauty is skin deep many would say, but there is no doubt that some countries have undisputed charm and beauty. Ukrainians ladies are amongst them.

I bet you have seen many models on TV and you have wondered where are they from and how come they are so impossibly beautiful. The truth is that Ukrainians are world famous for their looks and many of them have made their way to the fashion stages.

On the other hand so many other undiscovered ladies live in Ukraine, who have never dreamed of being in the center of the celebrities’ attention. Not everyone who is beautiful thinks of capitalizing on their beauty. Ukrainian morals are quite high and many parents refuse to let their daughters be models, just because they are afraid that along with the sessions they should show things that are too inappropriate.

All these ladies actually want to be are pretty and important, stars but not people’s stars. They want to be somebody’s world and passion and this someone to be their life. It is encoded in their genes. They do not pay attention to the beautiful body or charming smiles because they have them and this made them think beyond the material and skin deep aspect of attraction.

As soon as the young girl starts thinking and walking in this life she starts playing games where she pretends to be mother who looks after her family. Dolls are her loving babies who need care and special attention, warm food and true love. This girl is encouraged by her mother and grandmother one day to become real mother and to make her family happy with a sweet baby.

When the girls become teenagers their mothers reveal to them the secrets of beauty: balance in everything and most of all self respect. Girls are encouraged to dress well and to act as real ladies, but at the same time are guarded carefully from anyone who would like to take advantage of them.

Friendships with boys are not prohibited as long as they do not ruin the reputation of the young lady and her family. On the contrary, mothers encourage their daughters to have boy-friends because they know that keeping someone behind walls and curtains will actually make her rebellious and may push her to the wrong path.

Little by little, the girl becomes a woman. With strong family support and good education, Ukrainians are amongst the most interesting and preferred wives. They have knowledge in all areas of life: from entertainment to education, they have good university backgrounds, many of them have masters degrees in science or humanitarian subjects. And on the top of this they are good mothers because they are taught and encouraged to be.

Mothers are often role models for these girls. Women who have devoted their lives and beauty to those who they love: husbands and children. There are values that can not be measured and having someone such as this in this world is something money can not buy.

That is the secret of the Ukrainian lady: she does not live to be on the cover of a fashion magazine once, she dreams to be in the heart of her husband forever.

Could the Kurds Kill Iraq?

Kirkuk and the Kurdish borderlands - Iraq’s “Bosnia.”

The Kurdish autonomous north has long been held out as an example of peace and security for the rest of Iraq. Today, however, it threatens to become a source of its greatest instability and an issue, which might tear Iraq apart. In particular, the question of the status of the mixed city of Kirkuk threatens to ignite civil war tensions that will reverberate throughout the country and possibly threaten the intervention of outside powers, especially Turkey.

Kirkuk is a mixed city, with a predominantly Kurdish population, on the southern edge but outside of the autonomous federal Kurdish governate. For the Kurds, Kirkuk is a highly emotive issue. They consider it a city for which they have struggled and sacrificed their blood and livelihoods at the cost of forced depopulation, Arabisation and genocide. The infamous chemical attacks at Anfal in 1988 were in villages around Kirkuk. Nevertheless, the Kurds remain the largest community and they are determined to incorporate Kirkuk into the Kurdish federal governate as its capital.

The most ancient peoples who can claim the right to the city and region of Kirkuk are not the Kurds but the Christians. However, they are such a tiny minority that they are not a feasible ruling group. Following them come the Kurds and then the Turkomans, who were mostly settled by the Ottoman Empire, After them there are the nomadic and indigenous Arabs tribes and, finally, there are the recent Arabs, who were settled (sometimes compulsorily) by Saddam Hussein’s policy of “Arabisation” aimed at weakening Kurdish influence and power in the region. The Kurds argue that Kirkuk is essentially Kurdish and they want it as their capital, though they recognize the rights and existence of the Turkoman and Christian minorities. The Arabs, they say, should be repatriated (with financial) compensation, so that Kirkuk can become a fully Kurdish city again.

Indeed, such is the Kurds’ power within the weak Iraqi state that they have effectively engineered a constitutional coup concerning the status of the city of Kirkuk. They have secured the right for a programme of de-Arabisation and a referendum on the status of the city, which will give them control. According to the 2005 draft constitution a referendum must be held in Kirkuk before the end of this year and recently the national government has agreed a policy of repatriation of Arabs, with compensation. In turn, displaced Kurds will return to repossess Arab homes and businesses, something which is already happening under the local Kurdish council. This is bringing ethnic tensions to a boiling point. Arabs have already demonstrated on the streets refusing to be deported or “ethnically cleansed” and saying they have nowhere to go and intend to stay and fight for Kirkuk.

What makes this doubly contentious is the huge oil and gas reserves, which Kirkuk sits on. These would make the Kurdish autonomous region a viable independent state, which could mean the break up of Iraq. It also sends shudders down the spine of Iraq’s neighbours, because they fear it could become a powerful magnet for their own substantial Kurdish populations to break away and seek union with Kurdish Iraq. These include Iran, Syria and most of all Turkey, who has seriously threatened military intervention, should Kirkuk formerly fall into Kurdish hands.

The other communities also vehemently dispute the Kurds’ claims and objectives. The Turkomans consider Kirkuk to be historically Turkoman. Indigenous and recent Arab settlers view Kirkuk as an integral part of Iraq, to which they have every right to belong to and live in. Everyone views the Kurds claims suspiciously as driven by greed for the oil revenues.

The Arabs of the region fall into two segments or two with a sub-segment. There are indigenous Arab tribes, mostly in rural areas and the mostly urban “settler” Arabs who came mostly as part of the forced Arabisation of Saddam Hussein. Most are Shiites who came trying to escape poverty. and many claim to have fled victimization and forcible seizure of their own original lands further south. Sunnis also arrived and destroyed many Kurdish villages and build their own new ones. From the overall Arab viewpoint Kirkuk and other areas should never become part of Kurdistan, but should remain designated mixed areas as a mixed region under central government control or with a special federal status similar to other regions.

Such are the reports of the mood in Kirkuk that matters could easily take on civil war proportions. The ensuing battle, (while involving the Turkoman minority,) would principally be a revival of the centuries old Arab/Kurd conflict. For the Kurds Kirkuk is non-negotiable and for the Arabs it represents the last straw which they are not prepared to give up.

But all of the these groups combined do not outmatch the numerical superiority of the Kurds, which since the fall of Saddam Hussein has been reinforced by a de-facto re-population of the area by some 650,000 displaced Kurds. In the provincial elections in Kirkuk the Kurds won 60¨% of the vote and have an absolute majority of seats. Furthermore, they have gradually infiltrated and taken control of the army, police and intelligence services in the city and around.

Furthermore, if Kirkuk “falls” then the whole the mixed population areas of the north are under threat, involving hundreds of thousands of Arabs and Kurds. Already the Kurds lay claim to Arabized mixed towns like Sinjar, Tuz Khurmatu, Khanaqin, Mandali, Kifri and Mosul, and which also have important oil reserves. Much like Bosnia, with its overlapping mix of Serbs, Croats and Muslims, Orthodox, and Catholics, within this region there resides a mixed population of Kurds, Sunni and Shia Arabs, Turkomans and a small Christian mixture of Assyrians, Chaldeans and Syriacs. After centuries of Ottoman oppression, meddling by British Imperialism and decades of misrule by Saddam Hussein a lethal cocktail of latent ethnic tensions is now coming to the surface, which can spread civil war across the whole of the north.

It is not accidental that Sunni extremists, especially Al Qaeda, have begun a campaign of violent sectarian attacks in the area aimed at destabilising the region. The mixed city of Mosul along the Kurdish “frontier” has long been the scene for sectarian bombings, killings and violence. Iraq’s largest loss of life from one single bombing - more than 150 people - followed by the Shiite police massacre of Sunni men, was in the mixed community of Tal Afar. In response Muqtada al-Sadr of the Mehdi army has been backing the rights Shiites in Kirkuk and the region.

Mounting Kurdish casualties could provoke the intervention of the infamous Kurdish peshmerga guerrillas, who have taken over the police and military of Kurdistan proper, but who could be deployed in a paramilitary form in Kirkuk. Moreover, the sectarian spill over effect is potentially even wider, in that threats have been made to expel one Kurdish family from Baghdad for every Arab family forced out of Kirkuk. The scene is being set for a particularly ugly sectarian bloodbath as Arabs resist deportation and Kurds fight for what they see as their city and surrounding lands.

Such a new centre of bloody sectarian conflict could spell the end of Iraq. It would be beyond the abilities of the already stretched US Forces to control and should Turkey intervene militarily, then this would almost certainly end the project of a unitary Iraqi state and speed up disintegration, civil war and the break up of Iraq in to three statelets.

Until now the US has remained dumbly silent on the issue, being totally overwhelmed with events elsewhere. It is starting now to try to extend “Operation impose Order” into these and other areas, but, despite troop surges, its capacity for securing such an expansive area is impossible,. Until know they have simply gone along with supporting the Iraqi national government on the issue and its agreement to hold a referendum and now to allow Arab repatriation and Kurdish repossessions. Should there be a full-scale Arab/Kurd war over the area the US has no chance of stemming the ensuing bloodbath. The mixed area could become like Bosnia with its three main ethnic groups battling for power and Kirkuk could be turned into the ethnic cleansing hell of Sarajevo. This would quickly propel the struggle from one of Kirkuk into Kurdish independence and that would mean the break up of Iraq, with enormous regional implications.

The declaration of an independent Kurdistan would most likely attract foreign intervention. Syria has interests in supporting Arabs in the area in order to undermine separatist influences on its own Kurdish minority across the border. Iran too has a large Kurdish minority and has no interest in seeing a Kurdish victory for similar reasons. But the main international actor would be Turkey with its own huge and restless Kurdish minority along the border with Iraq. Turkey is is making louder and louder soundings about intervening militarily, if the United States is unable to control the situation. Such an intervention would rip Iraq apart and redefine the whole region. As one senior Turkish aptly put it in an interview with the International Crisis Group “Iraq should remain one. If it dissolves, all boundaries in the region will be redrawn, because they are all official. They are like walls: You take out one brick and the whole structure collapses.”

But, whether or not the Turks, the seizure of Kirkuk and a move in the direction of independence could encourage the Shiites in the south to follow suit and would leave no room or reason to strive for an Iraqi state based on an alliance of feuding Sunnis and Shiites. The Kurds, who once promised to show how a stable federation of Iraq might function, could now well serve as its gravediggers
