Recently, my friend Austin visited his nephew for the first time. Afterwards, he asked me these questions,.

Do two year olds and adults learn differently? Definitely. Although putting this difference into words presents a few problems. Not the least of which is that we adults cannot normally access states of mind wherein we do not have an unconscious. This simply is not possible for us. Once we develop an unconscious, it stays for life.

If we did this then, it would be something like being a lake fish who swam only in the upper foot of lake water. Never deeper. No coincidence, this is something baby fish do. And larger fish do not do.

How then could we describe this difference though? Perhaps by picturing this very same lake. And by picturing the difference between learning to see something in very shallow water, and learning to see this same thing in deep, partially murky water.

Obviously, this second kind of learning includes being able to discern things even in the presence of murky water. Babies can not have this experience because they do not yet have any murky water. Thus, while young children may indeed Learn by Emergence from a young age, their ability to recall what they learned at this age may be limited to times wherein there is no murky water in life. Times wherein life is exceptionally clear.

Austin, as I think about it, this is likely very close to the truth about young children and how they learn. Which may be why when we do access these kinds of things in special states like meditation, we can feel at times like we are remembering things rather than that we are just now learning them.

Does the lack of an unconscious make learning for a child this age different than for an adult? As I have just said, I am not at all certain. My first inclination is to say not completely. Yes, I do believe you can Learn by Emergence before you have an unconscious. However, our ability to recall this learning must be significantly affected, and impoverished as we develop an unconscious.

What I can say is this. We emerge from wounds only when new patterns emerge from our unconscious. Literally these new patterns emerge from chaos, wherein this chaos is the mental blankness and the newly emerged pattern is what is visually new to you.

What about when we do not have a wound though but rather, have yet to witness a pattern? Here, I know this experience to be very similar to what Buddhism describes as their life’s focus; to become enlightened by becoming conscious.

This then leads me to something else I already know. The idea that there are two categories of events in which we enter a state of mental blankness. In the first one, we go blank when we are exposed to something unfamiliar. In the second, we relive having once been startled into blankness. The blankness of an injury.

Technically, both these states could be called unconsciousness. And while the second kind of event is what normally leads to Learning by Emergence (the experience of emerging from a previously blocked ability to picture something), it may be that when we have yet to be able to picture something, this same possibility may exist. The difference being that we are more emerging from the blankness of ignorance than from the blankness of injury.

What stops me from saying with certainty that this is the case? The idea that I do not know for certain if we get can get startled by realizing we have yet to learn something. If we can, then I can easily see how we might emerge both from ignorance as well as from a wound. If not, then we likely cannot Learn by Emergence from ignorance.

In other words, with injury, the thing which causes our mind to go blank is reliving the startle. Then the thing which causes us to feel amazed when we emerge from this injury is that we do not get startled.

So the question is, does this happen to us when we emerge from ignorance? Now as I think about it, ironically, I feel amazed. Why? Because I realize I would have to say yes. Why? Because emerging from ignorance does amaze us. It just now happened to me.

What does all this mean? It means that the fact that a two year old does not yet have an unconscious makes learning for a two year old different than for an adult. However, the mechanism beneath this learning must be the same. The amazing change from being startled to being not startled.

So can Emergent Learning happen without having an unconscious? Or does having an unconscious hinder Emergent Learning? Austin, first, I have to say this whole group of questions has been one of the most thought provoking I have been asked in quite a while. Here is why. Prior to this, I had not considered how learning for a two year old was any different than for an adult. That I did not know only a moment ago, in fact, now amazes me. What I am saying is, your asking me these questions has just now caused me to have a few things emerge. Not things which I ever had wounds about. Things I had simply been ignorant of. I literally hadn’t even known to ask these questions.

In this moment, in fact, I still feel quite amazed by how I had never thought to ask these questions. And while I do indeed have an unconscious to be sure, still, this amazement means the same thing regardless of your age; it means something just emerged in you.

As for whether having an unconscious hinders learning, here, I’d have to say yes and no. Yes, because in order to have this thing emerge, we must become able to see it both in clear water and in murky water. And no, because when we learn with no murky water, we have not yet completed the learning. It completes only when we have learned to see this thing in both clear water and in murky water.

This then must be the nature of maturity. And my reason for titling this week’s questions, The Nature of Maturity. Maturity must be when something emerges in us in such a way as to be accessible both in good times and in bad; in clear water and in murky water; in connection and in stress. Children simply cannot yet have this happen, because they have yet to accumulate enough murky water.

Ah, so dear ‘ol insomnia bares it’s fangs at you as well? Well you are not alone. Like so many others, does this monster visit you regularly at night and keep you from going to and/or staying in that blissful place called sleep or dream land? If only the sucker would perhaps come only during all those boring and dull lectures at school, or one of those really long office meetings where it seems the speakers might as well be talking in a foreign language ‘cos all you see them do is move their lips.

Just about every human being is visited by this dude at one point in their life or another. As you would know, insomnia is difficulty in initiating and/or maintaining sleep, and feeling poorly rested in the morning. Unfortunately, this condition can have a great negative impact on quality of life you live.

I know the feeling when night time comes and you get into bed, to rest your tired and weary body and mind, but hours after you got into bed, you are still awake. Or you find that you have woken up several times during the night and before you know it, it’s time to get up and start a new day, which you are ill prepared and rested for. Once upon a time, there were several times during the week when I would be awake till about 5 or 6 am with little or no sleep. I was a chronic insomnia to my bone marrow.

If the last paragraph describes you and the many ’sleep battles’ you engage in night after night, be of good cheer, for your insomnia troubles ends this day, BUT ONLY if you take the action that is recommended.

Insomnia is classified into three categories: transient, intermittent and chronic, but whatever type and severity yours is, know for certain that there is a permanent and natural cure for insomnia. Like I said, I am speaking from experience and the countless other people whom I have introduced what I am about to tell you, have experienced similar amazing results, such that they can easily enter into a sleeping competition and chances are high that they would win or at least come tops.

To cure insomnia permanently, you first need to know the “root cause” of insomnia, and this has nothing to do with depression, or having a lot of things on your mind or any such. Those are all secondary causes of insomnia. The root or main cause has to do with your brain activities. This is a relatively new discovery and even a lot of medical doctors are unaware of this find.

You can permanently cure your insomnia with ‘music,’ or more specifically sound ‘frequencies.’ It’s commonly referred to as brainwave technology and it is the best thing that can happen to anybody who has sleeping problems. Brainwaves, which is the different states and levels of activity in which your brain is functioning at any given point in time is the key to understanding why you find it so hard to sleep.

There are four main levels of brain activity in a human being at any time during a 24-hour day and those levels are:

2. Alpha Brainwaves (7-13 Hz) : This state is what happens when you are in a relaxed or calm state or day dreaming.

3. Theta Brainwaves (3 - 7 Hz) in this level, your mind or brain is in a light sleep, such as when you take a nap in the afternoons.

4. Delta Brainwaves (0.1 - 3 Hz) Associated with deep sleep.

What all these means is that most times at night when you cannot sleep, your brain is still functioning at Beta or active levels, i.e. as if it were still day time, and no matter what you do, or what sleeping tables you take, you will not be able to achieve that state of restful sleep you desire. Yes sleeping tablets may knock you out and you may sleep, but the sleep will never be refreshing and you will almost always wake up feeling drowsy and not refreshed and probably with headaches and more.

For you to sleep and sleep properly, your brain activity needs to drop from active Beta to relaxed Theta or Delta levels. And if this does not happen naturally by itself the way nature intended it to, the the only other ‘natural’ way to do so is by ‘entraining’ the brain to fall into this frequency by using music or sound that is playing at THE EXACT or near same frequencies of Theta or Delta frequency.

Not only do you fall asleep shortly after listening to this sound frequency, but even when you are only able to sleep for a few hours, maybe because you slept late and have to get up earlier than usual, your sleep is still so much more refreshing and ‘filling.’ While there are other ‘natural’ substances that can act as a natural remedy or cure for insomnia, such as drinking chamomile tea, taking honey, or a warm glass of milk shortly before sleep. All these don’t come close to the effectiveness of using sound frequencies or binaural beats to induce sleep. And besides, these other methods are more of short term solutions, for you will always have to take these substances to have the desired result, and just like sleeping tablets, your body will be dependent on them to induce sleep.

On the other hand, using sound frequency or brainwave technology to induce sleep has the added advantage of being a ’short’ term thing in that after continuous use of this method over a period of time, you brain will soon naturally be able to go into this sleep and relaxed state by itself without needing to be induced. Breastfeeding statistics have recently been made public in the suburb region of Montreal, in Canada. Breastfeeding agencies were very pleased with the overall rate of a whooping 77% nursing rate at birth. The bad news is that the rate of women still breastfeeding their babies after 6 months was a disappointing 3%.

How can this tremendous drop be explained? What can we do to encourage and support breastfeeding after the first months of life? These questions and many more are being considered by organisms promoting breastfeeding.

The first explanation a local medical doctor has proposed is the way the rate of breastfeeding at birth is calculated. The simple question asked to the woman in labor is: do you want to breastfeed your baby? A yes, is then marked and accounted for as a woman breastfeeding her newborn baby.

This doctor says she has seen so many women giving-up on breastfeeding after sometimes only one five minutes try, that the 77% rate is highly inflated by the data collection system. Most women who stop nursing their babies will do so in the first week after birth. A repeat follow-up call would show a drastic drop in the overall breastfeeding rate after the first week.

How can we explain that so many women give-up on breastfeeding after only one week of trying?

The first answer may be that we need a better support fro breastfeeding mothers and more clinics where mothers can be re-assured and supported in their effort to breastfeed. Another very important step would be to have tangible supports for women who are nursing. Education of partners on how they can relieve their nursing wife would be greatly helpful.

Another answer forwarded by the family doctor who has delivered over 2500 babies in her career is that some women will answer that they want to breastfeed from the pressure applied by society. It is now “in fashion” to breastfeed and a new mother might fear to be judged if she does not breastfeed her baby. She then nurses but is tempted to give-up at the slightest set back.

“I have seen women giving-up on breastfeeding after a five minute tryout” says the doctor. “To me, it seamed clear that this mother felt more like she had to breastfeed her baby more than she wanted”, she concludes.

In answer to the question of how we can improve the drop rate of breastfeeding, the answers are multiple. Strong supporting groups and a loving spouse are the two most important factors. Making private areas readily available for nursing mothers are a must. Proper data collection is also needed to get a more realistic picture of the breastfeeding rate in North America.

A one week follow-up call or better yet visit is mandatory to get the more accurate rate of mothers who are still breastfeeding and helping the ones who need support.

“A stronger belief of the virtues of breast milk is also a must” continues this doctor who does medical mission in third world countries. “In such countries like Honduras and Bolivia where most citizens are poor, breastfeeding rates are above 95% until the baby is well over one year old. They have no other option than breastfeed and they strongly believe breast milk is the best food for their growing babies…and they are right!” concludes Dr Fiset with a smile.
