After having worked in corporate America for two decades, I often get asked why I stopped a high-paying salary to work at home. Sometimes I ask myself the same questions.
Actually, there were a myriad of reasons for it. A few included, a. spending too much time and energy working my way up invisible ladder that led to nowhere. Another, and this may sound childish, is that I never felt comfortable in a coat and tie or suit. I love wearing my jogging suit or loose clothing. I am more creative and productive when I am most comfortable.
Often people ask me, “Rick, how do you make money in a home office?” My answer is simple. “How do you not make money in a home office?
It is so obvious the upside (and yes there are downsides to working at home). When I say how can you not make money at home, I mean it. My net worth is thousands of times more living in a small quiet community working at home than it was when I was in big city corporate America (even though my salary was much higher there)?
How? I’m glad you asked.
There are many more tax loopholes for working at home (depending on how many square feet your devote to your office in your home). I have a big home office. I was able to choose my own computer which I love, hated the one at my office.
I can buy my own home office equipment at deep discount (actually anyone can) because I own an estore that sells it (mine is not the only one, simply the best..ha ha, ok I slipped that in). But it is true.
I buy the plants I want for my office, and even the home entertainment system. I listen to music on a JVC Theater In A Box I bought for myself.
Friends and relatives order all the time from me because they know I have virtually zero overhead,
go directly to the manufacturer and ship promptly.
You can do all this too, but you need not have a product to sell. I happen to also be a cartoonist
and sell my licensed cartoon products on another website.
You can write your own downloadable Ebook about something you know and promote it via
pay per click engines, opt-in permission email services, banners, and so many ways.
Before you laugh at home-based businesses, keep in mind until 1984 we had no World Wide Web.
That tool gave us the capacity to brand ourselves, conduct business like the big dogs (only better and more personable) and so much more.
So try the 25 foot commute to your office and watch your quality of life, your attitude and everything about you change for the better. Good luck. Onward upward.
