Our creativity is breaking our preconceived limits too. Have you ever noticed how much our technology has progressed in the last 50 years or so? We have finally invented an automobile which gives out pure water instead of smoke! A personal computer has more power than what IBM invented 30 years ago! Also consider the invention of the information super-highway. Never before have two humans from opposite sides of the globe, been able to communicate with each other through electricity, for so ‘cheap’.

We see books on creating our desired realities on the bestseller lists. Movies like ‘What the Bleep do we Know’ and ‘The Secret’ are successful. It is said that “when the student is ready, the teacher will appear”. This cannot be truer for humanity as a whole. For centuries, this kind of knowledge has been in the custody of only a small percentage of individuals. But now, especially with the advent of the internet, this information is spreading faster and faster throughout the globe.

Look around you, something special is happening. This article is a part of this shift. It has prompted me to write this, and you to find it!

Planning Healthy Meals for Kids

After twelve years the USDA restructured the information provided in its Food Pyramid for Healthy Eating. They realized that they needed to make the information easier to use for everyone, especially kids. They literally turned it upside down. Instead of boxes that divided the food groups, they added brightly colored stripes that represented each of the foods. Ultimately it became much easier for parents to plan healthy meals for their kids.
Along with the redesign they included different food intake patterns which address individual needs. Children that are very active or have a higher metabolism need more calories, compared to a child that is less active or has a slower metabolism. The suggested amounts of foods that we need to consume each day are derived from all the individual food groups. This includes Grains, Vegetables, Fruits, Meats and Meat Products, Milk, and Oils.

The estimated daily calorie needs are divided into twelve intake patterns ranging from 1000 calories to 3200 calories. These calorie levels were set to help people in a wide range of categories. For example a calorie range for children between two and 18 will differ according to age, sex and activity level.

Counting calories can be a tedious task, but they made it really easy for us by taking the guess work out of the picture. Here is what they did, they took the components of each food group, then placed them in a chart that tells us exactly how many servings of each food we need.

Example: In order to stay within the guidelines for 1200 calories we would need to serve:
1 cup of Fruit
1 cup of Vegetables
3 oz. of Grains
2 oz. of Meats and Meat Products
2 cups of Milk
3 teaspoons of Oils, or Fats

Plus we can include another 165 calories at other times of the day, for instance snack time.
When they redesigned the pyramid they did not make drastic changes to the Dietary Guidelines. The best nutritional advice has always been to eat a variety of foods. In combination with physical activity that balances the amount of foods eaten compared to the amount of exercise we do. Be sure to eat foods from each of the food groups, and choose foods low in saturated fat and cholesterol. Plus we need to watch the amount of salt and sugars we consume.

In conclusion, the messages they are trying to convey to individuals, families, and children is eat right everyday, be physically active everyday, and to have fun while doing so.

Brachialis and Brachioradialis in Neck Related Elbow Pain

Brachialis
Neck pain due to C5, C6 nerve root irritation will also lead to pain in the brachialis. The pain will be felt in the front of the arm deep to the biceps muscle with elbow pain.

It arises from the lower two thirds of the front of the arm bone (humerus) and attaches to the top of the forearm bone (ulnar coronoid process). The nerve supply to the brachialis is the musculocutaneous nerve and the radial nerve carrying the C5, C6 nerve root fibers to this muscle.
This muscle is usually involved in shortening contractions since it bends the elbow and is thus a second tier muscle for treatment in C5, C6 nerve root irritation.

The first tier muscles for treatment are the muscles exposed to constant lengthening contractions such as the deltoid, teres major, and the latissimus dorsi muscles.

Brachioradialis
Presence of neck pain with C5, C6 nerve root irritation causes pain in the elbow related to spasm of the brachioradialis muscle which receives the C5, C6 spinal never root fibers through the radial nerve.

It is one of the muscles of the wad of three together with extensor cup by radialis longus and brevis. Pain and spasm in these muscles will give significant elbow pain.

This muscle arises from the outer edge of the lower part of the arm bone (humerus) and inserts into the far end of the forearm bone (radius).

Bending the elbow in most activities of daily living is usually performed with the forearm in a midway position between palm up and palm down positions where the thumb side is uppermost. These positions include lifting, writing, eating etc.

Therefore, brachioradialis is repetitively over used in many activities of daily living. In the presence of C5, C6 nerve root irritation, it becomes weak and thus more prone to injury.

My husband takes a different approach than me, and this also causes conflict between us as he lets our son get away with bad behaviour by ignoring it. I believe you have mentioned 2 issues here: (1) father uses an indulgent parenting style, and (2) husband and wife are not united and bonded on some major issues. Let’s look at each one in turn:

Re: Indulgent parenting style – Parenting style has two elements: sensitivity and strictness. Sensitivity refers to the extent to which parents provide warmth and supportiveness. Strictness refers to the extent to which parents provide supervision and discipline. Categorizing parents according to whether they are high or low on strictness and sensitivity creates four parenting styles:

· Indulgent
· Authoritarian
· Uninvolved
· Assertive

Indulgent parents are more sensitive than they are strict. Children of these parents tend to have high self-esteem, but low motivation (e.g., perform poorly at school, do few if any chores). Also, they are more likely to have behavioral problems at home and school.

Authoritarian parents are very strict, but not very sensitive. Children of these parents tend to have high motivation (e.g., do well in school, do chores at home), but have very low self-esteem. They also have poorer social skills and higher levels of depression.

Uninvolved parents are low in both sensitivity and strictness. Children of these parents tend to have both low motivation and low self-esteem.

Assertive parents are both strict and sensitive. Children of these parents tend to have both high motivation and high self-esteem.

Thus, it might be in your husband’s best interest to adopt a more assertive parenting style — for his son’s benefit!!

Re: Not being united and bonded – When mom and dad are not on the same page with their parenting strategies, several negative outcomes result:

1. One parent is forced into playing the role of the “bad guy” (this is probably you mom).

2. The child is always able to play one parent against the other (e.g., if he gets a “no” from the more assertive parent, he will go to the indulgent parent to get a “yes”).

3. The child is always able to convince the indulgent parent that the more assertive parent is “mistreating” him.

4. Due to the above outcomes, resentment builds in the more assertive parent, thus creating tension between husband and wife.

Thus, it will be important for you and your husband to sit down together and come up with a united plan. A weaker plan supported by both parents is much better than a stronger plan supported by only one. When husband and wife do not develop a united front, it is often the kiss of failure (i.e., the child continues to suffer emotional and behavioral problems).

It takes more than just setting goals to be happy, it takes positive thinking, how though can we attain this. There are a number of factors that can make us think negatively and one of those is diet, a person who eats a lot of take out and fast food is feeding their body junk which mostly consists of fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sugar and is generally low in vitamins and minerals. Start by eating better foods, more fruit and veggies, meat products and high fiber meals which give the body much NEEDED minerals. If your physical body is happy its much easier for your mental body or “thinking ability” to be happy. Next exercise is all important, half an hour a day is recommended for a positive well being, why is exercise so important you say, because it is a furnishment of the body, it gets oxygen running around the body more easily which helps us think better and most of all helps us sleep better. If you are finding difficulties sleeping, a little more physical work or exercise during the day may be needed.

Thinking is also linked to what we do, for example if you do something that you hate doing everyday it will show in your attitude, this probably explains why so many people are angry in the work place. How Anatomic Are Anatomic Breast Implants?

There are many choices that the prospective breast implant patient has to make. Aside from who will be the surgeon, the patient has to think about what size implant she wants, what style, location (above or below the muscle), and which incision. The following discussion explores one of the most basic decisions concerning the implant style: Round or Anatomic?

Implants come in two basic styles – round or anatomic. These refer to the shape the implants has when you put it flat on a table; as will be discussed, it’s a little more complicated when you consider what it will look like in the woman. A round implant is exactly that: when placed on a table, it is round when viewed from the top. You can rotate it as much as you want in any direction and it will still look the same. From the side, it’s the same idea – an equally curved dome that looks the same regardless of how you rotate it.

Not so with the anatomic or “teardrop” implant. This implant was originally intended for use in breast reconstruction patients (i.e., after a mastectomy). The natural breast, of course, is not round. Instead, it is conical or teardrop-shaped, with a gentle slope at the top and more of the breast in the lower half. The teardrop implant, therefore, most closely mimics that shape and is ideal for total breast replacement. Unlike the round implant, the anatomic implant has only one correct orientation and must be lined up exactly right, if it is rotated even a few degrees, it will not look right.

What about the typical cosmetic breast enlargement patient? While there are different opinions and preferences on this matter, two recent studies have shed some interesting light. At first glance, the anatomic implant makes the most sense and, indeed, it is the first choice of many surgeons. However, aside from the fact that it only comes in a textured form (and for many reasons, many patients and surgeons prefer a smooth implant – which is a topic for another time), on closer examination it may not prove to be the best choice. First of all, most patients who have even a little breast tissue already have more of it in the lower half of the breast (I.e., a little sagging) Adding more volume to that part of the breast actually compounds the “problem” rather then compensating for it. So a round implant, that has relatively more of its volume in its upper half (than an anatomic implant) actually does a better job of putting more where you need it more, assuming you’d like more of a balance.

What about the round, ball-like look that everyone hates? Well, first of all, you normally get that when you have too big of an implant for the space in question; i.e., when a woman has chosen an implant that’s a little too big for her chest. It’s hard not to “go for it” when you’re choosing an implant size, but it may be well worth being a little conservative in this regard. After all, it’s much easier to make yourself look a littler larger for selected occasions than it is to make yourself look a little smaller. One woman who felt she had gone a little too big later told me that she looked great in evening wear and lingerie, but for just hanging around the house in sweats, it was a bit much. Secondly, not everyone hates that look; some people actually like it (assuming it’s not too extreme).

There’s more. The above discussion is based on the implants shape when they’re sitting on a table. What happens in a real-live woman? This question was addressed in two recent studies and the impressive results confirm what many surgeons have believed for a while. In a patient, a round implant often behaves more anatomically then an anatomic implant! A number of women with implants were examined radio-graphically (i.e., using x-rays) in both the standing and lying positions. The found that when women are standing, the implants are similar. The anatomic implant assumes an anatomic (teardrop) shape. This is not surprising, but what is surprising is that so does the round implant! When a woman is standing, gravity works on the implant to pull a little more of it down and, from the standpoint of x-rays, both implants are relatively teardrop-shaped and therefore anatomic.

So what happens when a woman lies down? Well, the anatomic implant remains “anatomic,” i.e., it maintains it’s teardrop shape. The problem is, you don’t always want that when you lie down. Natural breasts fall to the side when a woman lies down, so ironically, the anatomic implant is less anatomic when a woman is lying down. And what about the round implant? Because it has less of a framework then the anatomic implant (which is what keeps it anatomic), the round implant, once again, responds to the forces of gravity and more closely mimics the natural breast. They found, quite remarkably, that the round implant falls to the side much more then the anatomic.

(In fairness, it should be pointed out that, with time, some women have had “dishing out” of their round implants (i.e., they become wider and flatter with time) to a greater extent then the anatomic implants do. Anatomic implants, however, because they’re textured and have more of a framework, remain stiffer then many round implants, particularly smooth ones.

In sum, therefore, when you use the term “anatomic” you may need to be prepared to define it carefully. DO you mean anatomic on a flat surface like a table, or in a woman? In views of the above, one could definitely argue that the round implant is actually more anatomic then the anatomic implant.
