A Web radio site for women? Can it be? Will this be successful? What I’m really asking is will women support a Web radio station aimed specifically at women? Your first reaction might be “why of course, silly. Women support women all the time.” If you think like this you might want to talk to Hillary Clinton! It seems there are an awful lot of women in this country who will not support Hillary precisely because of her gender. Of course there are other reasons why women won’t support her, but too many people hold her sex against her.
So if we won’t support Hillary because she’s a woman, will we support a Web radio site aimed at women and women’s issues and concerns? We’re about to find out here in Brevard County, Florida. Beginning the end of March, 2007, there will be a new Internet-based talk radio station. Radio4Women.us is being launched by a married couple, Leigh and Richard Hendry.
Tired of the same drivel aimed at a primarily male audience, Leigh Hendry decided that she’d had enough. All of the programs are about politics and male issues Hendry declared and she envisioned a program geared toward a female audience.
Approaching several local terrestrial radio stations with this innovative concept, the Hendrys were disheartened to find little or no interest. The stations were uninterested in changing their format or integrating this new show into their existing format.
The Hendrys discovered the logistics, not to mention the expense of starting their own terrestrial radio station, were prohibitive. When XM and Sirius satellite radio debuted, the couple waited for someone else to do it, but they discovered no one was doing anything quite like this.
Thus Radio4Women.us was born. The couple will present a mix of entertainment and informational programming they hope will appeal to local Brevard County residents, both women and men. They will discuss what is going on in Brevard County. And according to them, there is a lot to do in this county, only people aren’t aware of it. They aim to change this.
The initial programming will consist of “Art and Soul,” “Her Natural Life,” “Strategies for Success,” “Her Success Story,” and “She’s Got the Beat.” The six hour program block will repeat four times a day. Several more hours of locally originated programming will air by the end of April.
“The programming has just fallen into place,” Leigh said. “Our goal is to entertain and inform – not infuriate. The topics are ones I want to hear, and I think other women will be interested in them too.”
Richard Hendry believes this is the year of Internet radio. According to Hendry, “by the end of the year, you’ll be able to order an Internet radio player for your car. The crossover point will be the portability and convenience. That’s what’s going to change Internet-based radio.”
The four elements of Radio4Women are to inform, enlighten, empower and entertain.
Other aspects of the radio show will be Strategies for Success, hosted by Bonnie Dubrow, who will present coaching and interviews with local and national coaches, authors and motivational speakers.
Another program will be presented by Dr. Ashley Lundy who will host Her Natural Life, a radio show about natural health news and interviews with local practitioners.
There will be many more programs featured on Radio4Women.us such as It’s In the Stars which will feature local psychics and readers. There will be interviews with national mediums and authors.
Women’s Health and Fitness will offer the latest information on health issues along with interviews with local doctors, authors, and trainers.
What’s With Him? will deal with the secrets of men, to help women understand what makes men tick and why they’re different.
Entertainment Me will feature new book, movie and video reviews from a woman’s point of view. There will be interviews with authors and a call-in segment for listener participation.
Her Golden Years will deal with topics and information geared toward senior women.
If the show lives up to its advance publicity, I think we’re in for a treat. Not just us women but the men too. They will also benefit by finding out just what makes US tick.
Tune into http://radio4women.us and prepare to be entertained and enlightened. Who knows, you may also end up voting for Hillary because she’s one of us and from where I sit, it’s a darn good thing to be a woman!
