Great News for Chocolate Lovers - Your Favorite Food May Contribute To Lower Blood Pressure

A new German study published in the American Medical Association Journal Archives of Internal Medicine suggests that chocolate may contribute to lower blood pressure in some people. This is due to the flavenoid content of this popular food. The study was based on an analysis of five randomized controlled trials of coca which followed 173 people for a duration of two weeks. The analysis found an average lowering of systolic pressure of 4.7 mm of mercury and an average lowering of diastolic pressure of 2.8 mm.

Unfortunately this doesn’t mean that chocolate is a prescription for low blood pressure. Other factors, including calories consumed, and the type of chocolate may counter any of these possible effects. Most chocolate consumed is highly refined, contains very low levels of cocoa solids and contains very high levels of added refined sugars and milk fats. Varieties of chocolate containing high levels of flavonoids include dark and bitter chocolate as well as Baker’s chocolate which contain very high levels of the cocoa solids.

The study also looked at the effects of tea on lowering blood pressure and found very slight changes in comparison to the results of the chocolate. As the study was an analysis of five controlled trials covering 343 people, the data collected seemed to take little account into the quality of the tea or its source.

The most commonly consumed tea in industrialized countries is in the form of the tea bag. Not only does the teabag restrict the expansion of the leaves and circulation of the water through the leaves, the quality of the tea leaves used in most bags are referred to as dusting in the tea industry. These dustings have been exposed to substantial amounts of oxygen during processing and storage so it is quite possible that the antioxidants, which are expected to be found in tea leaves, have simply expired.

The researchers concluded in this study that the consumption of foods rich in coca may reduce blood pressure where the results of tea consumption were not nearly as good. Such research is not considered to be conclusive or definitive but provides clues to help others explore the nature and composition of food as they catalogued the many beneficial phytochemicals found in plants as well as their most efficacious sources.

The Working Mother and Its Chance of Improvement

The technological advancement and the continuous innovations had made everything under the sun to be excruciated by changes not everybody benefited from the realm of development as they say. Only small part of the world determines what really lays ahead, but on the deeper side of the communities whose family experiencing uncomfortable life made the mother work to augment the growing financial gap of the family.

In the 3rd world countries where most of the businessmen establish their manufacturing industries had seen the capacity of the available manpower and depending the on the product, most of the laborers are ladies and mothers. What I’m trying to focus is that the father is also working, but due to insufficient income mother has to work also. But the ironic part is that some of these industries do not hire mother. That you have to state on the application from that you are single (not married) no matter what you age.

One of the persons I discussed with about the advantages and disadvantages of a working mother commented that these industries have really helping a lot to the family. It is true since the money earned become double with that of the father. On the other hand, it is devastating because of the idea that nobody is left behind to look for the children or these children are left with a trusted or paid person. This is also good in the first stage, but in the long run, the value that is supposed to be maintained by the mother is forgotten, it also cultivates deviant behavior for the children.

Though this overview does not acceptable to some cultures, this is happening in the countries where close family tie is a trait. This trait is observed widely in Asian countries. A professor in sociology told that the idea depends on the values of the person and the family as a whole.

But the working mother is the most affected one. The sacrifices are double because of the supposed to be benefit is only given to single ladies not to mothers. Though this is being seen and practiced by the manufacturers the law that binds them give ways to do so. One of the reasons is the number of available manpower. Thus, it comes as an advantage to most of the mothers and soon to be mothers.

Women are the same with men in most cases nowadays, but mothers are different compared to both. They should be given the same if not better opportunity and benefits. But the questions is, is there any to be manufactured products to be done at home? Though Internet offers a work at home basis, in these depressed areas mothers could not afford to buy a computer and pay the monthly broadband/internet connection.

But of course there are blessed places where mothers could work at home. Family living in the nearby coastal areas now has the chance to help their husbands by creating a group or a non-government organization aimed to exploit the marine resources while developing it into a more productive source of food and income.

But for other places mothers still have the chance to do the same. Just like in coastal areas, all the mothers have to from a group focused on the system of cooperation. Cooperative groups have proven that it is another way to help the family, but the whole community as a whole.

I’m Laid Off?!

“Laid off, terminated, fired, downsized, let-go”; no matter what the guise, many of us have heard those words spoken. If you have not, consider yourself fortunate because it is common in today’s cyclical business environment. We’ve all seen the headlines, “Local Company Lays Off Workers”.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been with the company two weeks or twenty years, the budget was cut, the position was eliminated, the department moved and your career focus has been altered.

How, if at all, can you adjust to this sudden change? The answer, as any good Scout Leader will tell you, is to be prepared. In today’s marketplace, “I’ll do this later” is now not an option. There are three areas of preparedness I’d like to stress: mental, physical, and financial. They are in that order intentionally, as one begets another.

Now more than ever, you can put your professional skills to work. Just as a new assignment may be given to us, we must challenge ourselves to be ready for career changes or adjustments at any given time. This is your new assignment, approach it as such.

Mental Preparedness:

  • Don’t become too complacent in your work environment. Continue to challenge yourself; continue to survey your surroundings. What is happening in other departments? What is happening in other companies? Where does your profession seem to be going in today’s market? Are there areas you can accentuate?
  • Attend at least one educational class a year. This includes seminars, networking groups and the local community college. The goal is to be infused with new ideas and energy. Remember when you first began your job and you witnessed archaic methodologies that no one seemed to notice? This is the fresh set of eyes you want to bring back to your workplace.
  • Those clients and vendors who are challenging? Patience, please. They may just be your next employer or referral!
  • Prepare yourself that you may be challenged with a different assignment at any given time.

Physical Preparedness:

  • Is your resume updated? Now - today? Your resume should be reviewed every six months and updated at least once a year. Even if it involves adding only one line of text describing a new responsibility or adjusting adjectives for a stronger delivery. Revise and have it ready. You will have many more credentials to discuss in your performance reviews as well.
  • Engage in a physical activity at least once a week. This can be as simple as walking the dog (which is also a perfect time to meditate and pray) or as regimented as a health club (another place to network). The benefits of physical activity cannot be discounted; you look healthy, you exert energy, and you tend to be less likely to overindulge.

Financial Preparedness:

  • Remember when your financial consultant asked you to have a separate “emergency” savings account equal to your household net income of 3 months? Do it! If you never have to dip into it during your professional working career – reward yourself with a luxurious vacation later!

But now it has happened – the unexpected.
Mentally, you’ve just suffered an emotional shock and a kick in the self-esteem. It’s hard not to take this personally. There are tens of thousands of people in this position right now as we speak. How we react will make the difference as to whether we are waiting weeks, months or years to obtain our next assignment. If you need to take a week to reflect and recover – even be irritated, allow yourself that. But do not take it further. Let’s turn the corner.

  • Lay out your game plan, time lines, and goals. And remember, these are subject to change! Be kind to yourself.
  • Network, Network, Network. If you didn’t previously partake in a networking group, find one now. Even meeting once a week will benefit you by keeping you in a professional environment, requiring your professional attire, and feeling professional. Check your local paper for group listings, call the Chamber of Commerce, the local Job & Family Service Agency, ask a friend or surf the web. Near Columbus, Ohio there’s a job networking group. You may have one in your area. It’s an avenue to get advice and network with others seeking a different assignment. It’s a way of getting your name and skills passed out to even more!
  • Seek professional career counseling. If you feel less than confident about your abilities at this time, get the advice of a professional. They can be wonderful motivators and will find skill sets you overlooked! Additionally, most of them have a HUGE network! Be sure to check with your previous employer, as they may have contracted a firm already to assist their displaced workers through this process.
  • Find a reputable staffing agency to work with. If you don’t know how to do that, ask a Human Resources Professional. Most HR Professionals have one or two favorites. Staffing agencies can assist in finding you not only permanent placement, but temporary assignments in the interim. They can guide on you on interviewing techniques and some offer free training on computer programs.
  • Take some educational classes. These classes do not have to be in your professional area. They can be a second language, classes on traveling Europe, or abstract art. The focus is learning something new, exercising another part of your brain, and making more contacts. Renew yourself. It’s the perfect opportunity.
  • Pray. Ironically, for some it’s difficult to pray when we need to the most. We may feel depressed, resentful, and unworthy. But try and remember how healing it is to talk to a good friend. God won’t spill any secrets and He will even give direction. If you can’t pray ask others that will. When I say others I’m including spouse, children and close friends. Their prayers will guide you into positive thoughts, ideas and faith. It will also promote healthy communication and more love than you ever thought possible.
  • Physically, you won’t feel like doing anything. The best game plan seems like going to the couch from the kitchen with a bag of chips; timeline – now. Again, allow yourself this for one week. But get back in the groove. You will want to feel and look your best when you are called into your next interview!
  • Now is the time to work on things you’ve not had time for before and that includes reducing expenses. When was the last time you obtained competitive quotes on insurance, long distance, home and credit card loans, internet/cable connections, medications, or personal care items? Something as simple as cutting coupons and watching for sales could make a great difference. Make it a family endeavor!
  • Health insurance. COBRA rates are extremely expensive. With the time you are given to decide whether or not to commit to COBRA, check with a local insurance agent and get recommendations on the possibilities of a private health plan.

Change the World One Purchase at a Time

We’ve all done it. Groaned when we’ve had to pay the $30 dry cleaning tab, or moaned for having to pay cab fare, and cried when we made the check out to the housecleaner. It’s hard not to. Living takes money, and watching it dribble out just hurts sometimes.

Most people look at spending in one way and one way only – what you get for what you spend. For example, you spend $50 and you get a comfy sweater. Spend $5 and get valet parking. You pay to get things you need, which is all well and good. Society really can’t function any other way.

But you can. Looking at your spending habits in the traditional way can cause bitterness and other negative feelings occasionally. Yes, things do cost a lot, and they do add up. Sometimes it seems to go out as fast as you earn it, and for what? Food? Clothing? Pedicures?

Let’s propose something radical. From this moment on, stop thinking about money in the traditional way. Let’s not think about money and spending habits from the ‘ME’ perspective alone. When your first instinct is to say ‘No, I don’t really need that’, try to stop doing the ‘responsible’ thing and start sharing the wealth.

Take care of yourself as well as someone else in the process. That’s the wonderful thing about spending. It affects not only you but someone else in a positive way.

Here’s an example: You’ve had a long day at work, and before you go home to cook dinner and see your family you decide to treat yourself to a manicure and pedicure. It’s a luxurious hour of silence and pampering, and the girl that helps you is sympathetic to your long day and works extra hard to make you feel special. You leave feeling refreshed and happy, and tip the girl $10.

So there’s nothing unusual or different about this so far, right? Sure, you’re out about $60, but look what you got! You got an hour of bliss and renewal, and you’ve got beautiful nails to boot. Well worth it.

Now, if on your way home you start to berate yourself for spending so much, this is where we’re stopping. What you need to realize is that the experience you just had and the money you spent doesn’t simply involve you anymore. That girl who worked so hard to make sure you were relaxed and happy, she’s part of the picture too.

Look at it this way. By walking into the salon you helped her make money today. She probably has children of her own that will eat and wear clothes that you helped provide by going and getting pampered. Maybe the tip you gave her is going in the bank to help her go back to school to get a degree, or it’s going to help her kids go to school some day.

It’s such a simple concept, and yet almost no one stops and thinks about what their spending is doing for other people. You’re helping others eat and survive with the money you spend. It’s really quite amazing and wonderful. You have the power to do good with the money you spend. Think about it. Think about the possibilities.

Now, we’re certainly not advocating you go out and do society a favor by maxing out your credit cards, but just by changing the way you look at your spending might make it a bit easier to get through the day. You are contributing to those around you with your buying power, especially if you shop locally and use small businesses for things you need.

You’re helping others live and pursue their own dreams when you buy, and remembering this every day might just make you a bit happier yourself!

Sales Forecasting Is The Achilles Heel Of Business Planning

Forecasting future sales is one of the most difficult areas for many companies. The challenge is to produce consistent and accurate advance information which can be used by production, stock and service managers to plan for future demands.

In practise, much of the forecasting work currently undertaken is very random, if not haphazard guess work. It is based on highly subjective reports of the sales people, often under short term pressure to predict acceptable levels of achievement in order to meet targets.

As a result much of the medium-to-long-term sales order forecasts are often made up of business projections based on nothing more scientific than optimistic guess work rather than on disciplined and realistic assessment of likely conversion of sales from individual customers.

Companies spend thousands of pounds and hundreds of man hours on their annual, quarterly and monthly budgeting and forecasting activities.

Financial management techniques and systems have developed apace in recent years but these have little input into the forecasting process, especially predicting short and long term sales.

The pressure for accuracy is growing. Jobs, investment and expenditure depend on making the right assumptions and predictions. Too often companies fail to spot in advance negative trends or competitive activity which impinge on their ability to win new orders.

Most forecasting, in the widest sense, is based on historic information with some allowance for highly subjective judgements such as the economic climate, trends in the industry etc.

The Achilles heel of even the most significant business planning methodology is an almost uncritical acceptance of what the sales team predict as imminent or long term business opportunities and their value.

Companies put complex and time consuming reporting procedures in place to capture data but can be extremely uncritical of the quality of the information itself which is provided.

Frequently the sales predictions - short, medium and long term - are highly suspect. They depend on the sales team’s personal, often highly subjective views, and often reflect the pressure for ‘certain sales levels to be achieved’

Predicting the real chance of winning a particular order will change the closer the customer gets to placing the order. Two or three months ahead the sales men will report the order as ‘in the bag’, closer to, the odds will often be reduced or even discounted. There is no discipline or consistency in the process. Orders ‘lost’ now will be replaced by ‘new’ opportunities conveniently two or three months down the line. These new ‘orders’ will be lost as the time for their confirmation gets closer. Thus, the organisation never has a realistic assessment of its potential sales.

What is missing is a management awareness of what is really happening to ‘vapour sales opportunities’ and a complete lack of system and discipline in predicting the real possibility of winning specific orders consistently. These ‘vapour sales opportunities’ represent unsubstantiated sales opportunities which can amount to anything up to half of the ‘pipeline’ business being reported to management from month to month.

Sales teams are relying on a base level of business coming in to cover up poor predictions and to replace lost orders previously anticipated. This is one reason that organisations frequently fail to spot downturns or changes in their business environment.

The solution is a proper structuring of reporting procedures. Apart from eliminating unqualified business this process can help the organisation be more responsive to real business and focus on genuine problems and opportunities which the process identifies.

Much of this procedure can be computerised. It is a complex process and requires consistency, minimising the scope for human fallibility and changeableness.

Negotiating Customer Agreements

Every business needs to negotiate agreements with customers. The prophet Amos wrote, “Do two walk together unless they agreed to do so?” (Amos 3:3 NIV). Some agreements are pretty basic, such as a customer placing $5.00 on the counter and walking off with two gallons of milk.

Not all agreements are so simple. Many require some type of negotiation. Keep these factors in mind as you negotiate with your customers:

  • First, realize your goal is not to squash the other person. Rather, you want to win, and winning is coming to an agreement that is beneficial to both parties. Jesus said, “For by your standard measure it will be measured to you in return” (Luke 6:38 NASB). If you force your position on others, you may win today, but your victory will last only as long as you maintain that advantage. Competitive games create a winner and loser, while negotiating should aim at creating two winners.
  • Second, develop a clear understanding of what you want. This may seem silly in the sense that you want sales generated out of successful negotiations, but knowing your priorities will help you stay focused. If cash flow is slow, you may offer a lower price in return for cash payments. Or you may lower the price in return for a long-term contract or higher volume. Also, if inventory is high, a price reduction may help move inventory and generate cash.
  • Third, you need to understand what your customer needs and wants. What are the payment terms, delivery schedules, quality, quantities, and pricing that works for your customers? When bargaining with Wal-Mart, price will be the key factor as they buy from the low cost supplier. Other customers may want you to store inventory and ship as needed. Each relationship will be different and establishing customer empathy is a key step in successful negotiating.
  • Fourth, be prepared. King Solomon wrote, “He who restrains his words has knowledge…” (Proverbs 17:27 NASB). When your preparation is thorough, you can use that knowledge effectively. For example, when a customer raises an issue, you need to be ready to explain the rational for your position. If a customer pushes back requesting a lower price, you need to know the pricing of the competition. If your price is excellent, you can communicate that to customers. For example, when a concern is expressed with the three-month lead time required to order a specialized machine, you need to explain why the time is needed and the benefits of waiting. If you can’t clearly justify your point with facts, you probably hold a weak position.
  • Fifth, prioritize your needs and wants. Nobody gets everything they want, but a need is something you must have. For example, suppose a customer wants to special order an item. Since you probably wouldn’t sell this item to another customer, you may need a 50% deposit. Your customer has a want and you have a need. On other regular purchases, you may want cash up front, but a credit-worthy customer may want extended terms. You want cash up front for regular purchases, but don’t necessarily need it (with credit-worthy customers). Being able to differentiate between “needs” and “wants” will help you negotiate better.
  • Sixth, ensure you build trust. A Psalmist wrote, “How blessed are those who keep justice…” (Psalm 106:3 NASB). Without trust, why should anyone do business with you? If you sense distrust, simply ask the question, “How can I validate my good faith?” Negotiating an agreement with a customer without trust is nearly impossible. For example, if you don’t trust someone to honor your invoice, would you do business?

When you take the step of planning and executing your customer negotiations, you will build relationships that will generate long-term business. When you stay focused as to what’s important and approach each discussion with a “how can we both win?” attitude, you will be well on your way toward successfully negotiation.

Coffee - Can Coffee Help Prevent Disease Through Its Antioxidants?

Coffee, and the pros and cons of drinking it will continue to be a debate. Many people believe that coffee is safe and even beneficial when drank in moderation. Others feel strongly that coffee can be harmful, especially when drank by children. Who is right? The controversy over coffee and its effects may go on forever.

There are many groups who make it their full time job to study coffee. One group is the Institute for Coffee Studies at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. This institute is located in Nashville, Tennessee in the United States. They study coffee and caffeine and how it may be beneficial or harmful to humans. They present their research findings in medical journals and at conferences, such as the one held in London called the World Coffee Conference.

They have released information that shows coffee to have a “significant presence of antioxidants”. An antioxidant is any substance that reduces damage caused by oxygen in our bloodstream. This oxidation modifies chemical structures in our body and can lead to serious illness and disease in our bodies. If it can be proven that the hundreds of compounds found in coffee beans could actually be helpful in preventing disease then we would all be interested in drinking more coffee. More studies will need to be done before we will know for sure the full impact of this study.

Coffee is also linked with reducing the risk of Type 2 diabetes, the most common diabetes. About 170 million people have this disease and it is growing all over the world in epidemic proportions. The largest study of the connection of coffee with a reduction in risk of developing diabetes was conducted in Finland. The people of Finland consume more coffee than people anywhere in the world. This study in Finland involved more than 14,000 people. The risk of developing diabetes was shown to be reduced by drinking coffee – but only in people who drank at least 5-6 cups each day. It had to do with the chlorogenic acids found in coffee. These acids inhibit enzymes that form glucose in the small intestines.

Another concern with drinking large amounts of coffee is that the body may not be able to absorb enough calcium. Coffee is a diuretic so calcium and other necessary minerals are quickly eliminated from the body if you take in too much caffeine, whether it is from coffee or another source.

So what is the answer? Maybe coffee should be added to the list of things that we should do in moderation. It appears that both the positive and negative effects are only found in cases where an excessive amount of caffeine is consumed. So if you enjoy having a cup or two of coffee don’t let this information stop you. Always conduct your own research by seeing how your body reacts to foods and environmental conditions. You are the best judge of what you should be doing on a daily basis.

Identity Theft Prevention Tip Exposed

Every year people all over the world discover they have bad credit or charges on their credit card that they never made. Unfortunately, these people are victims of identity theft. There are some good ways to avoid identity theft. This article will give you an identity theft prevention tip that just might save you from this terrible crime.

Identity theft has been around for several years. However; very few people ever talked about identity theft before the berth of the internet. Sadly many people think that the only way you can lose your identity is if you buy something online. Yet, purchasing items on line is probably one of the least likely ways that your identity will be stolen.

Copy Everything You Have

You can do something about identity theft. If you own a home, have a bank account or a drivers license then you need to be concerned about identity theft. One identity theft prevention tip would be to make copies of all the items in your wallet or purse. Then if you lose your purse or wallet you will have an accurate record of everything that was in it.

By making a copy of everything you can act quickly. If you end up discovering that your purse or wallet has been stolen you can go to your personal file and recall all the items that need to be canceled.

Memorize Your Social Security Number

The next identity theft prevention tip would be to never carry your social security card in your wallet or purse. Surprisingly many people do carry their social security card because they have never memorized their social security number. This number should be as common or even more common then your phone number.

The best identity theft prevention tip you can do is to subscribe to an identity theft service. With a good identity theft service you could literally allow people to steal any of your personal information they wish. However; the thief will not be able to do anything with your personal information. There are some good services online that cost less than one hundred dollars per year and are as solid as a bear trap. You can feel totally safe no matter what personal information you lose.
