Great Men

The great men of the world had mostly been visionaries. These men have also maintained a vision of success greater then their selves. Great men have always felt success is theirs for the taking. Their mind is locked in the we can mode not the we can’t mode. In the mind of great men they see success. They never stop to think about the obstacles that arise, but they continue to see the vision of success.

Great men all seem to have a set of high principles that they use for a continue source of strength. For example, one principle that some great men use is stated as follows: when you treat people right good thing happen for you. Some men said if they are fair to your employees they will work very hard and make their company a success. Great men will stick by their principles no matter what others say. No one can move a great man from his position when he feels he is right; he will stand on his principle to the end.

Great men always seem to stay positive in all situations. They just keep working even when it looks like a losing battle; the great man still sees victory. When problem arise the great men simply continues to move in the path of success. He does not lose his focus when problems arise. Great men will maintain a positive attitude when all those around them have their heads hung low.

Great men will preserve to continue towards their vision. Their perseverance will enable them to maintain a determination drive to succeed. Great men are just determined to move in a positive direction no matter what. Even when others quit working, you will find the great man still pushing hard to move forward. They seem to know in their heart that if they keep at it sooner or later they will succeed.

Great men all seem to have an inner excitement about their vision. It is almost as if they carry a fire to succeed that is raging inside their heart. They are in fact living the success and already see a completed vision. Great men talk about their visions as if they are already completed. They thoroughly believe that success is only a matter of time.

When you find your self in the presence of great men, please listen carefully. Let their words find a special place in your heart. Their lessons will help you all the days of your life. Some of their words will stick to the walls of your heart; you will find them to be some of your most valuable treasures. Rest assured that you will only find a hand full of truly great men in a life time. Listen well.

Simple Exercise For A Bad Day

Some mornings I wake up, or just get up out of bed because I never slept that night. What I did was spend the whole night tossing, just trying to sleep. Motivation leaves a bit to be desired due to the fact that my eyes are half closed and drooping towards the floor.

So the question of a workout comes to bear. Do I even want to exercise? I tell you, I don’t want to get out of bed. Sleep is desired, but it isn’t happening anyway. Well since I still have an extra 15 pounds of ‘winter fat’ that I want removed from my abdominal area…guess I should do something. What does one do in this kind of situation? Keep it simple and move your body.

Get out of bed, kill a couple double espressos, and go do something. Obviously I probably am not going to hit it like I would with the elusive full nights’ rest, but something here is better than nothing…calorie intake will probably be the same for the day, if not more. So burning extra calories is the way to go. Being one of the top Fitness Professionals in the South Bay Area, I know that I need to burn an extra 3500 calories per week just to drop ONE pound of body fat. Based on that information, I should do something, anything!

Here is some good news in this case: an easy cardiovascular workout will burn a greater percentage of fat calories than a hard cardio session will. Wait, did I say that? Oh yes, that is right…and that is why we use target heart rate during aerobic exercise!

Notice on the charts that your target is not 80-100% of your max, but 60-80%? That is because it has been shown that a higher percentage of the calories burned from fat during exercise can be obtained at the lower heart rate levels, and more carbohydrates (and even muscle) can be burned at higher heart rate levels!

Now about the length time to exercise…yea, you got it, have to go longer. We need to go a bit longer time length because we will be burning fewer calories at the lower level heart rate, but higher percentage of fat. BUT on this day the goal is just to do it! Just getting the lower intensity level session will burn a higher percentage of fat versus carbohydrates, as well as just burning something! Remember that burning something on a bad day is better than burning nothing due to the bad start. PLUS you will feel better from the endorphins released during exercise!

So what to do? How about a walk? Take the dog out for a walk, or hit the park, par course, track, or neighborhood streets. Raining? Get an umbrella. Bored? Get an iPod. Cold? Wear a jacket or sweatshirt. Don’t make the excuse, after all, you already are getting past the ‘I’m tired’ excuse!

The bottom line is that just getting out an doing some form of exercise on a bad day is better than doing nothing when it comes to health, fitness, and sustained weight loss.

Good luck in your program and go exercise!

How Does Wind Power Work?

Wind energy is an environmentally inert, clean, and inexhaustible source of electric power that, as it turns out, is really just another form of solar energy. The sun creates wind by its uneven heating of the planet’s atmosphere. It’s moderated by the earth’s rotation and irregularities in its surface. The planet’s terrain, water bodies, and vegetation then affect the wind flow patterns. With the invention of wind turbines, we can now harness the wind’s energy and use it instead of purchasing electricity from the utility companies that are derived from non-renewable sources.

The easiest way to understand how wind turbines work is to think of a fan operating in reverse – rather than electricity spinning the blades and thus generating wind, the wind spins the blades, thereby generating electricity.

Breaking it down to it’s simplest components, a wind turbine operates as follows:
the wind turns the blades
the blades spin a shaft
the shaft connects to a generator
the generator produces electricity

To expand on that simplification, the turbine’s blades are connected to a hub that’s mounted atop a turning shaft which runs into a gear transmission box that increases the turning speed which, in turn, is connected to a high speed shaft that cranks the generator. If the wind speeds get too high, a brake is deployed to slow the blades down and prevent damage being done to the system.

There are two basic types of wind turbine:
horizontal axis wind turbines: the kind most commonly in use today and the focus of U.S.
Department of Energy research on wind power, these come in two varieties –
2-blade horizontal axis turbines spin downwind
3-blade horizontal axis turbines spin upwind
vertical axis wind turbines

The size of a wind turbine will influence its power generating capacity, with the smaller windmills that produce under 50 kilowatts being the type most commonly used to power water pumps, telecom dishes, and homes.

In an innovative advancement known as hybrid wind systems, these smaller turbines are also being used in combination with solar (photovoltaic) systems, rechargeable deep-cycle batteries, and diesel generators to provide storable, on-demand power in more remote, off-the-grid places.

In most residential situations, a wind turbine is used as a supplemental source of power in combination with local, on-the-grid, utility power. There is something called a cut-in speed (7-10 miles per hour), below which the wind turbine will cease to provide an output, and the utility grid provides the structure’s power. Above the cut-in speed, the wind turbine kicks in and the grid power supply is proportionately reduced (depending on the structure’s energy draw at the given moment).

If the output produced by the wind turbine exceeds the draw from the structure (and/or storage devices, like batteries), the excess power is then sold back to the pubic utility company. Use of wind energy can reduce a residence’s energy costs by, on average, 50-90%, though these numbers are influenced by a variety of factors and, as such, can fluctuate greatly.

In a typical residence that uses under 10,000 kilowatt hours per year of electric power, a 5-15 kilowatt wind turbine should more than suffice. This type of system can run anywhere from $6,000-$22,000 to install, depending on a variety of factors, including: its size, your intended application, and any service contracts entered into with the manufacturer.

Being that certain situations (such as in the city) make personal wind power use an unviable option, a general rule of thumb is to consider installing your own wind power system if and only if you pay at least 10 cents per kilowatt hour and your location’s average wind speeds exceed 10 miles per hour.

The larger wind turbines have capacities upwards of 50 kilowatts, running these days into the several-megawatt range. These windmills, known as utility scale turbines, can be grouped together and connected to central lines for transmitting and distributing in bulk to the local utility grids that, in turn, sell that power to homes and businesses across the land. These are called wind power plants or wind farms.

Society and Culture - The Informational Age

“The promise of the Information Age is the unleashing of unprecedented productive capacity by the power of the mind. . . . The dream of the Enlightenment, that reason and science would solve the problems of humankind, is within reach.”

Such is the optimistic conclusion of Manuel Castells in his massive trilogy, The Information Age: Economy, Society and Culture. Within the same conclusion, however, this professor of sociology at the University of California, Berkeley, cites as prerequisites many miraculous changes for society and culture in this global social conscience. And the likelihood that these miracles will be realized seems as remote as the Emerald City in The Wizard of Oz.

Consider several “if only” rainbows that society and culture must chase before we can walk the yellow-brick road to Castells’s utopia: “If people are informed, [are] active, and communicate throughout the world; if business assumes its social responsibility; if the media become the messengers, rather than the message; if political actors react against cynicism, and restore belief in democracy; . . . if we assert intergenerational solidarity by living in harmony with nature; if we depart for the exploration of our inner self, having made peace among ourselves.”

What Castells doesn’t seem to realize is that human nature is the wizard behind this curtain, and unfortunately he doesn’t see that for what it really is. In his conclusion he states that “there is no eternal evil in human nature.” Yet he warns in his third volume that the Information Age has the potential to greatly expand the gap between rich and poor nations, that the weakest in society (especially children) stand to be exploited by the new global economy as never before, and that a rising global criminal economy will wield unprecedented power.

In the same volume he readily admits that “we are all inhabited, at the same time, by humanity’s angels and devils, [and] whenever and wherever our dark side takes over it triggers the release of unprecedented, destructive power.” Castells is to be applauded for recognizing that human nature is at the crux of the success or failure of the Information Age, but his optimism is not supported by his analysis of these monumental changes. In fact, he identifies the potential for more negative than positive scenarios as the world speeds blindly into what many believe will be the greatest social upheaval in the history of humanity.

To be fair to Castells, he does not intend to suggest a coming utopia. His intent with this work was not to engage in futurology, but to present the situation as it presently exists and to identify the social and economic factors that would be most affected by the technological revolution. He acknowledges his optimism but defends it when he writes, “I believe in rationality . . . without worshipping its goddess. I believe in the chances of meaningful social action . . . without necessarily drifting towards the deadly rapids of absolute utopias.” The question that remains is whether the new technologies will bring society and culture a better world or whether they will be used for destruction, as were all too many technological advances in the 20th century.

NETWORK VS IDENTITY

Castells will certainly have a major impact on the debate about what traditional institutions should or should not do to influence the progress of the Information Revolution. The author of more than 20 books, many dealing with the impact of information technology on society, he is recognized by business leaders and academicians alike as the premier expert on the social ramifications of the Information Age.

Castells has long been a citizen of the subject on which he is an expert–the new global economy and culture. He himself is a globalized social theorist. Born in Spain in 1942, he taught at the University of Paris for 12 years before moving to California. He has taught and conducted research all over the world and has been an advisor to heads of state from Europe to Latin America to Asia. He has been a member of the European Commission’s High Level Expert Group on the Information Society and is a member of the European Academy.

In the last year, Castells has also become a star speaker at major conferences on the Information Age. He was one of a very few academics to address the World Economic Forum earlier this year, with an audience that included George Soros, Bill Gates and Kofi Annan.

In his trilogy, Castells describes a tension that new information technologies have created within the society and culture. He identifies it as a battle between “network” and “identity.”

Volume One is titled The Rise of the Network Society. In it he introduces a new term, informationalism–a new economic model evolved from capitalism. In the new economy, information is the most important currency, and new models of production are forming as a result. Castells illustrates how the global economy is now reliant on the continuous and instantaneous flow of information, and how that flow has changed consumption and production. Enormous power has been invested in those who control the information pipelines, and very often that power goes politically and legally unchecked.

Volume Two, titled The Power of Identity, shows the major counterforce to networks and globalization: old and new groups expressing their collective identity. Here Castells identifies social (and to a lesser degree economic) communities that are emerging, and he comments on their shifting and transitory nature and how they are undermining the old structures, including ethnic cultures, the family and the nation-state.

In his final volume, End of Millennium, Castells brings together the findings from the first two and sums up where he believes society and culture is as it enters a new millennium. And while he focuses on Africa, the rise of inequality, the growing criminal economy, urban poverty, and the plight of children, he still has faith that “there is nothing that cannot be changed by conscious, purposive social action” that is informed and legitimate. Yet he resists making firm predictions and concentrates on, as he puts it, “what we know the Information Age brings to us.”

EMPIRICAL WEAKNESS

The three volumes work together to establish the fact that a new global economy and culture are emerging, driven by the engine of capitalism. This new state of affairs will in turn come under threat from the pressure of other social movements, ethnic groups and virtual cultures that are arising in response to the rapid shrinking of the globe. All of these forces will utilize the speed and pervasiveness of the network to stake out, defend and promote their identity. Information capitalists, nation-states and traditional institutions will have to take each potential threat seriously, no matter how insignificant it may seem initially.

Castells cites the success of the Mexican Zapatistas rebellion as evidence. This relatively small and isolated group, devoted to preserving the culture of those native people of Mexico who were threatened by global interests such as NAFTA, was able to hold the Mexican government at bay by appealing to the greater global community for support via the Internet.

Yet it seems the new technologies put all entities at risk. The very same special-interest groups and individuals that are empowered by unlimited information will also have their identity threatened by competing social movements. Thus no one will have a secure sense of identity.

It is no surprise that Castells, a former Marxist, concentrates on the plight of workers through all of this change. He believes a major consequence will be great uncertainty in employment resulting from a dramatic change in how we work: labor pools will be defined increasingly by temporary ventures that Castells terms “projects”; corporate firms and businesses will constantly shift their focus; and many firms will become sources of capital as opposed to producers of goods and services in the traditional sense. These factors may work together to produce a situation not unlike that of the 19th century, when vast groups of people were uprooted to fulfill the labor needs created by the Industrial Revolution.

These are just a few of the general trends that Castells attempts to identify. While the three volumes are long on data and short on firm conclusions about the future, the specifics he addresses in illustrating his points make for interesting reading and prompt the reader to consider various what-if scenarios. But one comes away from the trilogy recognizing that the subject is so big that even the best minds writing in such magna opera as Castells’s are incapable of giving us the full sense of the revolution we are witnessing.

The advance of the Information Age is in many ways like the development of a new empire, though this empire is not limited, as others before it have been, to time and space.

Several questions remain, however. At what stage are we currently in the life of this new global empire? Will the global economy and culture prevail, or will society fragment? Can the dark side of human nature be overcome before the full power of the Information Age is unleashed? This is the drama for which Castells wisely refuses to provide an ending.

So often in the past, the real enemy of empires was not the foe without but the dark side of human nature within. More often than not, empires collapsed because of internal social forces at work–the moral decline and eventual collapse of the Roman Empire being perhaps the most notable example.

The astonishing powers being unleashed by the explosion of information technologies will demand strong ethics and morality from the citizens of this new global empire if it is to enjoy a happier fate.

The Importance Of A Boating License

Just as certain things are required for driving a car, such as it is for driving a boat. What many who are interested in boating fail to realize is that captaining a boat of any capacity is a skill and privilege. In order to boat responsibly it is essential that you educate yourself thoroughly and subsequently receive a government regulated boating license.

Boating can be incredibly exciting but also dangerous if you are not adequately prepared to handle the boat or the circumstances that could arise on the water. In order to obtain a boating license you begin by attending a boating school. A reputable boating school will teach you the fundamentals of boating including boat operation, navigation, and emergency preparedness. The culmination of a boating course will be a final test that you must pass to get your boating license. However, keep in mind that you must be at least sixteen years old to be a licensed boater.

You can contact your local marina or hit the Internet to find a reputable boating course in your area. Keep in mind that obtaining a boating license is dependent upon you being educated in the operation of your particular boat; so the more complex your boat, the longer your boating instruction could possibly take.

While the opportunity does exist to obtain a boating license online it is never a good idea to go this route. First and foremost, a boating license – because of its level of importance – should not be obtained by cutting corners. It is essential that you receive hands-on instruction that will make you the most responsible boater possible. It is not possible to get the level of experience you need by hustling through a course online.

It is imperative that you carry your boating license with you at all times; and be sure to check into particular state regulations before boating over state lines. A boating license can prepare you for your adventures on the water and ensure a safe and exciting ride.

Living With Back Pain

In this day and age, it is often quite common to hear someone complain of back pain. Sedentary work days spent hunched over a computer, moms lifting heavy children, jobs that require physical labor – they can all result in back pain. And when you add to this equation the fact that as a society, our waistlines are continuing to expand then you may notice the correlation of this with increased back pain. Extra weight can not only cause back pain but exacerbate an existing condition.

While pain medication may seem like the answer when it comes to eradicating back pain, the truth may lay in much more holistic forms of treatment. It’s true that medication will undoubtedly have an effect in reducing pain but it’s really only treating the symptom rather than the underlying problem.

Rather, there are far more comprehensive ways to address back pain so that you are not reliant on medication to get through the day pain free. Exercise, believe it or not, is one of the best forms of back pain treatment and prevention. Injury to the back may initially stem from the weakness of muscles. It stands to reason, therefore, that if you work to strengthen those muscles, the injury will heal and pain will be eliminated. Exercise also does much to prevent back pain before it even begins. However, keep in mind that exercises such as weight lifting and low-impact aerobic exercise – especially when you are already experiencing a back injury or back pain – should be strictly supervised by your doctor. A medical professional can help design an exercise program based on your specific situation; thus working to address those muscles that will most contribute to your recovery. In the beginning, a simple walking program may be implemented, allowing you to get your body moving without putting unnecessary stress on your joints.

In line with an exercise program is also a program of stretching, yoga, or Pilates. The back muscles are enormously affected by the strength of the body’s core – the midsection of the body where the abdominal muscles reside. If you have weak abdominals you will have a weak back. Working to strengthen this area will give your back the support it needs and help reduce back pain. A stretching program also fosters flexibility, working to loosen stiff joints and muscles which can work wonders for back pain management.

If you are experiencing back pain it is best to see your doctor right away. In many cases, a chiropractor can be enormously instrumental in helping the patient alleviate back pain. Work with your medical professional to find the best course of treatment for you.

Finding Unique Baby Clothing

Something happens to us when we become parents; normally considered level-headed, we are suddenly thrust into a world where only the best will do. Those of us who said we would never buy this, never do that, never say this – are forced to eat our words. We are out among the other moms and dads, buying the biggest and the best. And when it comes to dressing our babies, there is a no holds barred quest to find the perfect outfits – those that combine comfort with a style that fits our little one’s personality.

Today’s retail outlets offer a large variety of baby clothes that comfortably fit our babies and our wallets. But when it comes to finding unique baby clothing, it may be necessary to venture outside the parameters of the conventional retail store. There are a number of different ways in which you can find unique baby clothing that looks great, feels comfortable, and doesn’t break the bank.

First and foremost, boutique stores generally offer unique baby clothing that you’re not likely to find in the average retail store. While this tends to be the priciest option for purchasing unique baby clothing, there are ways around the expense. Try to shop at the end of the season when clothing is offered at a discounted price. You can buy one size up for the following year and save yourself quite a bit of money.

Secondly, you may want to check out some high-end children consignment shops in your area for unique baby clothing. The higher end stores only accept gently used clothing for sale in their store. You can find beautiful, unique pieces at less than half the price you would have spent purchasing them new.

Finally, the Internet can be your most valuable resource in finding unique baby clothing. There are a multitude of online stores that offer really special pieces of clothing that you will not find anywhere else. You will generally find a much larger selection online then you will find in stores with limited shelving space. And the prices are usually less expensive as well. Plus, there is the added convenience of shopping from your living room.

Unique baby clothing is not out of reach – no matter what your budget. Be creative and look for ways to find beautiful, special clothing at a price that works for you.

Researching Liposuction Surgery Costs

In a day and age where plastic surgery of all kinds has become not only accepted but expected, we need only turn on our television sets to find live examples of procedures meant to nip, tuck, suck, and smooth. It’s no wonder that more and more us find ourselves turning to surgery to help rectify those areas on our bodies that are our source of frustration or dissatisfaction. Liposuction continues to be a popular procedure performed on a daily basis. But for those who have turned to this intervention, the considerations include not just the procedure itself, as well as recovery, but liposuction surgery costs.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure wherein a surgeon makes several incisions around the areas of the body that the patient has identified as holding excessive fat. Through the incisions an instrument is inserted that literally vacuums the fat from the body. The surgeon must work to get at fat deposits and maintain a consistent and smooth surface. Like any other surgery, liposuction surgery costs include time for the surgeon and surgery staff, anesthesia, the anesthesiologist, and any medication that is provided. Because liposuction is an elective surgery it is generally not covered through health insurance.

Liposuction surgery costs are largely dependent on the number of areas to which the patient is having the procedure done. Generally, there is a charge for each area; for example, if you are having liposuction done on your stomach and your thighs, you are generally charged for three separate areas; although there are surgeons who give discounted rates for several areas done at one time. To date, liposuction surgery costs generally runs around $1,000 per area.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that cheaper is not necessarily better. It is essential that you have your liposuction performed by a reputable and experienced surgeon. And, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Many of the higher-end surgeons do have higher liposuction surgery costs. And often, it is worth the price. This type of surgery requires an enormous amount of skill. Think of it this way: you want to hire the person with the most skill and that person may cost the most money. But when it comes to your body – it’s worth it.

There is financing available to help pay for liposuction surgery costs. So if your budget is stopping you from the getting the surgery that you want, look into ways to finance it through the surgeon’s office.

How To Use Landscaping Blocks

If you are landscaping, you may want to take help from landscaping blocks. These come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and even in a few different colors, and are meant to help you add structure and style to your landscape.

You can use landscaping blocks the way you would use landscape timbers or stones, but they are usually easier to handle and much easier to arrange into patterns and designs, because they are made with nice flat faces on them and they interlock or stack without any special care or leveling required.

If you are going to use landscaping blocks on the ground, it is always a good idea to design your structural arrangement in cooperation with gravity and the surrounding earth. If you are putting a block retaining wall, for instance, you should angle the blocks back a little with each higher course, so that they lean into the hill and not away from it, where they would eventually end up falling down. By having gravity help to encourage them toward the bank of dirt, you ensure that your wall will not fall and that it will hold the dirt in place more powerfully.

Always put the first row of landscaping blocks down into the dirt a few inched, to lock them into place. And it is a good idea to leave plenty of room for drainage of water that might build up behind them, as rain, melted snow, and irrigation water in your yard can filter down and get trapped behind the blocks. Water is heavy, and the pressure of it can break your wall if you do not give it another way to drain out. This is usually done by putting some pipes in the lower course of blocks, so that the water can slip out in between them and escape.

Use safety precautions when working with landscaping blocks, because they can be heavy, and if you do not practice safe and healthy procedures, you can end up straining a muscle or doing something worse. It is a good idea to wear safety glasses and sturdy gloves when working with blocks, and if you use any kind of binding material like cement or mortar, be sure to follow the safety instructions that come with the material, because it is possible to get bad irritation, eye injuries, skin rashes, and that sort of thing when working around cement. The dust is also hazardous, so you may need to use a filter or respirator while working with cement products.
