I would say one of the most annoying moments for students is when a big night out is coming up, all of your friends are going, but there is a slight doubt in your mind because of one issue……CASH!

If you don’t have enough cash to go out, my usual advice would be don’t give in to peer pressure or temptation and stay in to put in those valuable study hours, but if going on a bender is unavoidable or you actually really DO want to go, here are some tips on how to survive the night on a tight budget and have a good time too.

Stick to your Budget
Before going out, plan ahead and choose how much you can afford to spend on the night out. This should be based on how much money you actually have, and can you afford to live until the next bit of cash comes in.

Now you have chosen your budget, stick to it! Here’s the best advice I can give you….do not take your cash/credit card out with you. Get your cash out from a machine in advance, so the temptation to withdrawl more than you have budgeted wont be there. And of course don’t go spending all of your budget at once or too quickly. Oh yes an nearly forgot, don’t borrow money from your friends, especially if you can’t afford to pay them back.

Stretching your Budget
To make your money go further, take advantage of special offers in pubs and clubs, such as buy-one-get-one-free offers, or money off offers, this will get you more booze for your buck.
Another way would be to go to student friendly pubs and clubs or even the student union, these places usually offer good reduction on alcohol prices and are usually free entry, or money off entry for students. But it could be as easy as just choosing to go to the cheapest places possible, you should take into consideration the entry free and the price of your favorite tipple.

Taxi
This is usually a stumbling block, let me guess how many of you out there, including myself have gone out on a budget when suddenly closing time comes and it hits you really hard in the face when you realise you didn’t take into account that you needed a taxi at the end of the night. My advice would be to place your taxi money in a separate pocket or a separate area of your wallet and DO NOT under any circumstance spend it.

If you follow these tips, not only will you have a great night out but you shouldn’t have any regret the next day, you will also have enough money to do what you usually do but didn’t have to sacrifice much. - Herpes simplex thrives in moist conditions, so if you keep your toothbrush exposed in your bathroom, chances are you will get cold sores again and again and cold sore swelling will not be healed. Take your toothbrush out of the bathroom, and wash it before and after you use it.

- Shield the sore with petroleum jelly to avoid cold sore swelling. Use a cotton swab to apply the petroleum jelly onto the cold sore, and throw the swab away immediately.

- According to research, zinc can heal cold sore swelling quickly. Ask for tubes of zinc sulfate or zinc gluconate at your local pharmacy or health food store the minute you feel the familiar tingling of a cold sore.

- Some studies also show that the amino acid lysine can help heal cold sore swelling quickly. Supplement your diet with as much as three thousand additional milligrams of lysine by drinking supplements, or eating potatoes or dairy products to heal cold sore swelling. Be careful, however: lysine can interfere with infant development and growth, so if you are pregnant or nursing, you need to find other ways to treat your cold sores. If you can have the lysine-rich diet, however, stay away from arginine-rich foodstuffs such as sodas, peanuts, chocolates, grains, beer, and cashews. Herpes simplex relies on arginine to multiply.

Donel McClellan, in a sermon titled “Sleeping Through Storms,” shares this:

A terrible tragedy engulfed a religion professor at Whitworth College. Gerald Sittser lost his wife, mother and four-year-old daughter in a single car accident. One by one, by the side of the road they died in his arms. Following the accident Sittser chronicled the emptiness of his life. With candor and matter of fact clarity he recalls the despair that threatened to overwhelm him—but amazingly, never did. He survived because he believed in the ancient Christian doctrine of grace. He believed in grace because he lived it. And he named the book he later wrote, “A Grace Disguised.”

He writes, “. . . [T]hough I experienced death, I also experienced life in ways that I never thought possible before—not after the darkness, as we might suppose, but in the darkness. I did not go through the pain and come out the other side; instead, I lived in it and found within that pain the grace to survive and eventually grow. I did not get over the loss of my loved ones; rather I absorbed the loss into my life, like soil receives decaying matter, until it became a part of who I am. Sorrow took up permanent residence in my soul and enlarged it.”

Sometimes when I’m reading a particularly profound devotion, I experience what I call a “wow” moment, and this surely is one of my wows. To repeat: “Sorrow took up permanent residence in my soul and enlarged it.” Grace—this is such a cardinal tenet to our faith and we miss it, especially in times that tear our insides to pieces that only a loving Father can restore to a wholeness again. This dear man lost mother, wife and daughter. I thought of Job and the messenger who brought him the news that all his children had died together, gone, just like that.

So where was God while Dr. Sittser cradled his beloveds in his arms? God was right where He was when His Son died! I didn’t understand the profoundness of this until the night we heard our son scream and then shoot himself to death. I do believe that what got me through the moments, minutes, hours, days and weeks afterwards was the absolute belief that our Father was there with us through it all. And I believed that God would give us the courage (yes–courage!) to crawl through this valley, and walk and run again (Isaiah 40:29-31). I hope this doesn’t sound blasphemous, but God depends on us as much as we depend on Him.

Gerald Sittser concludes in his book:

“To live in a world with grace is better by far than to live in a world of absolute fairness. A fair world may make life nice for us, but only as nice as we are. A world with grace will give us more than we deserve. It will give us life, even in our suffering.”

Where does web site traffic come from?

It is a question that leaves many new Webmasters scratching their heads in frustration and bewilderment. After all, traffic is the life-blood of any website and if your site isn’t getting any then you have a problem. But it need not be that way because there is more than one solution and some are much easier to achieve than others.

The biggest secret to getting web site traffic is… wait for it…, backlinks. Yes, I know it’s not much of a secret, but it is the type of inbound links and how you go about getting these all-important links that is important. Get it wrong and, at best, you will be wasting your time, at worst, you could actually damage the credibility of your Website. Alarmist I know, but true all the same.

How do you damage the credibility of your site? By procuring links from sites that have been given a black mark by search engines for using questionable SEO tactics such as hidden text or keyword spam. Such sites are known as ‘bad neighbourhoods’ and as the name suggests; should be avoided. In fairness, the search engines know that you have no control over who chooses to link to your site, so don’t get paranoid about the idea, but do try to concentrate your efforts on links from good neighbourhoods.

So if backlinks are so important to the success of a Website then surely it would be worthwhile spending some cash to achieve the desired results, which begs the question: Is it worth paying for links?

The short answer is that it can be. But before you reach for your wallet you should be aware that some paid links are more effective than others, and there are of course plenty of ways of building backlinks for free. So, before spending any cash perhaps we should determine just what a ‘quality’ inbound link is.

A worthwhile, or indeed ‘quality’, inbound link is one that will add some value to your website. That value could be click-through traffic or page rank that will boost your own site’s ranking in the SERPS (Search Engine Results Pages), but preferably; both. If you haven’t already done so, then you should install the Google toolbar (you can find it at http://toolbar.google.com) so that you can check the page rank of prospective link partner sites. But be aware that page rank does not necessarily equal traffic! However, it can be a good indicator of a site’s worth.

If you do intend to buy a link on another website then it is perfectly reasonable to ask the Websmaster for some evidence of traffic statistics. A quality site with a good amount of traffic should happily provide this information in return for a paid link. If not, then look elsewhere; it is their loss.

In conclusion: one way of building traffic to a website is to invest time and effort in building inbound links, or backlinks, from other quality Websites. Avoid ‘bad neighbourhoods’ and concentrate instead on getting quality links. Finally, if you are going to pay for a link then try to get some evidence of how many visitors the linking site is getting.

I write frequently on how to trade but my observations on the markets here I will go back to may days as a broker and give you the view from the dealing room on client behavior and the major reasons traders lost.

I dealt with several thousand traders over 8 years and here are my observations.

This was the late eighties and early nineties and online FOREX brokers of course did not exist, clients behave no differently today as they did then.

Here are the top reasons traders lose with any FOREX broker and that includes online FOREX brokers

1. Methods traded were illogical

The first reason was simply methods did not work as logic they were based upon was not relevant to market movement.

Today, day trading is more popular than ever with online FOREX brokers, but it was around 20 years ago and the same results were obtained which were:

A wipe out of equity in a short time.

Day trading did not work then and it doesn’t work now- Volatility is random in short time frames.

Any support and resistance seen in a daily time frame therefore is useless for trading purposes.

Online FOREX traders just like we did must love day traders lots of commission generated!

As a broker your balance sheet is based upon commission to equity.

You generally assume all clients lose anyway, so if they pay lots of commission while losing all the better.

There were other methods that lost especially the ones that clients bought that promised regular money or an income from trading.

These methods were normally bought tested in hindsight and the trader threw in the towel after a few losses, or was wiped out.

Another group that lost were the ones with complicated methods.

They figured the more complicated a method was the more likely it was to succeed, this of course is totally wrong.

Simple systems work best as there are fewer elements to break.

We had one trader who bought a system which he proudly boasted was based on artificial intelligence and the same technology used by NASA to put a man on the moon

Unfortunately, it did not help him in the market!

2. Discipline

What always struck me was how few clients could trade in a disciplined fashion.

They had jobs where they had to be disciplined everyday, yet in the markets they simply behaved irrationally as soon as a few losses came along.

- They would chop and change methods looking for the perfect one.
- They would revenge trade to catch up losses.
- They would blame the markets and call them stupid

When money is on the line we all know it’s hard to be disciplined, but the emotions that we saw ranged from crying to total despair, including one suicide.

3. Money management

Many clients were good at picking market direction but could never make any money due to poor money management.

This was problem for them not only in cutting loses ( they very often removed stops or never placed them) of course, a small loss soon becomes a big loss, the trader cant take that, then he was handed a loss he had to take.

He would have been better of taking the small loss in the first place.

What surprised me was how few traders could accept big profits.

The bigger the profit became the more they wanted to take it even if their system indicated further gains.

The argument given was:

“you don’t go broke taking a profit”

Of course you do, if profits don’t exceed your inevitable losses.

This was perhaps more important than taking small losses.

Traders I saw could not allow trades run to $10,000 or more, a couple of thousand and they banked.

There are more reasons but they above are the ones that caused most losses and of all the traders I traded less than 1% made money longer term.

1. Cliff Young- the ultra marathon runner
A potato farmer, Cliff Young took part in a Sydney to Melbourne ultra-marathon race in 1983. Coached by his mother who’s 81 during the time, Cliff Young started the marathon with work boots and galoshes overalls.

Competing against world-class marathon runners who were backed up by big sports companies and had hundreds of hours preparing for the race, Cliff Young’s informal training regime consists in running for his sheep. He told the organizers that if he can run after his sheep for a few days, he could surely compete with other runners.

The ultra marathon normally took 5 days to complete and this potato farmer’s decision seemed suicidal. In fact, some tried to stop him from running the super-difficult race because they though Cliff Young could die due to the heat and fatigue. After all, he’s 61 years old!

To cut the story short, Cliff Young managed to finish the race. While the young racers sleep, he continued the race throughout the night. The young athletes left him far behind until the very last night where he eventually lead the marathon.

Not only Cliff Young, a 61-year-old potato farmer survived the race; he even managed to win the marathon and actually broke the race record by 9 hours! He even gave away his prize money to the rest of the runners after him.

After the win, he continued to run in many ultra-marathon races and has even sets standards in the world of endurance racing. His running style – dubbed “The Cliff Shuffle” is a famous running technique adopted by many runners in the world today.

Cliff Young showed that being old is not a barrier. And being a champion doesn’t mean you need have super-human strength, just super-human wills.

2. James Braddock – the fairy tale boxer

In 1928, James Braddock was a successful amateur boxer who broke his arthritis hand in several places during a fight for a chance for championship. He lost the game but continued his boxing career with an injured hand because he needed the money. As a result, his career floundered and he had eventually lost his boxing license when the boxing authority deemed him an embarrassment to the sport.

Out of work, James Braddock found himself in a difficult situation as the Great Depression swept the country of her wealth. Along with million other Americans, James Braddock went under, with no money or career to put food on the table of his young family.

Struggled to even buy milk, James Braddock waited at the harbor docks for jobs. Not wanting to be out of work, he made sure no one knew about his injury. During the difficult time, the family struggled with little food and had even had their electricity cut during winter.

In 1934, a few years in poverty and under government assistance, Braddock was asked to fill in a spot as a temporary boxer. Out of shape, Braddock was seen as an easy opponent. In what was considered a big upset, Braddock crushed his high rank opponent much to the amazement of boxing fans. With the help of his ex-manager, his license was eventually restored.

A veteran boxer with almost no chance of a career revival, Braddock defied his critics and won games after games and managed to eventually come back from a dead career. He ultimately went on to fight the World Heavyweight Champion during the time – Max Baer. A tall, powerful boxer, Max had actually killed a few of his opponents in the ring.

A small boxer, fans hoped Braddock wouldn’t be killed during the fight. Most believed that his fairy tale revival would end on the night he fought Baer.

It was a difficult fight for Braddock. He took heavy beatings and even broke his ribs during the match. However, he fought until the end of the fight and eventually won the World Boxing Heavyweight Championship, much to the amazement of the whole country.

He earned the nickname “The Cinderella Man” from this amazing comeback. From a poor, forgotten boxer, James Braddock went on to be the heavyweight champion of the world.

These courageous sportsmen are human beings just like you and me. But they go against all odds to achieve success not only for themselves but also inspire those who follow their careers.

They don’t give excuse. They work hard. They followed their dreams. They showed that human-will is more important than anything else. They showed that success can be achieved regardless of your limitations
