How To Buy A Laptop - 5 Basic Steps to the Right Laptop For You

You’ve decided to buy a laptop, but don’t really know how to go about it.

I get asked time and again how to buy a laptop. Sometimes it’s for a student, other times for an adult who just wants the freedom to roam around the house while computing.

So I have come up with a short procedure to follow that will act as a guide to get the right product for the right purpose.

Step 1: Determine who is going to use it. Not just the individual, but is this person - old or young (need reading glasses yet)? Computer literate or illiterate (PC or MAC)? A person who takes care of his hardware or someone careless?

Once I had a client who was blind and looking for a laptop. At the time, Toshiba had the best name in the business. We called a techy type guy who worked for an association for the blind who was also sight impaired.

His comment to us was that blind people can be a bit harder on things, for obvious reasons, and that Toshiba laptops don’t hold up quite as well to being banged around. He recommended some other brands instead.

Experience has also shown me that college students who don’t have to buy their own laptop have a distinct tendency to be harder on things also. Make sure they have a well padded case and use it.

The answers derived in Step 1 will trickle down to the rest of the 5 steps, as you will see.

Step 2: How long does this person need it for? Is it a student going to college and you, the parent, want it to last for the entire 4 year program (hopefully they’ll finish in 4 years!)?. If so, you want enough performance and warranty to last that long.

On the other hand, maybe you are buying for someone with plenty of money who likes the latest and greatest. (Is there a doctor in the house?) In that case, put money into power and toys, not lengthy warranty.

If it’s for an election worker, the laptop is probably not needed for more than a year or so, two at the most. Configure it accordingly.

Step 3: Determine the ergonomics. This is about the only use I have for big box stores. Wander the aisles and try out the different pointing devices and keyboards. Decide if you want widescreen or standard aspect ratio (standard is getting harder to find).

Do you like the glossy screen or will glare be a big problem where you are likely to use it most? Maybe you prefer matte finish. Glossy looks a little sharper for movies and Windows Vista Aero interface, and to see if someone is sneaking up behind you. But if you have an office with lots of windows or flourescent lights, matte may be better for you.

If you will be using the laptop outside a lot, you may want to try out some laptops - from friends or coworkers - in that environment. It’s no fun if you can’t read the screen.

Size and Weight. Does it need to be compact or light? Some very nice units weigh in at under 4 pounds yet have a large enough keyboard and screen to be quite usable.

A typical high powered laptop will run around 6.5 pounds. But a laptop with a behemoth 17″ screen tips the scale at almost 10 pounds!

Step 4: What kind of support will you need for it? Are you the type that just isn’t comfortable talking to support staff in India, and would rather walk up to a counter with a live (even if disinterested) human being?

Or are you self sufficient enough to handle simple things on your own, maybe even get out a screwdriver and start prying the keyboard off if directed to?

Buy a laptop from a vendor who will give the kind of support that you require.

Step 5: Do you have budget constraints? If so, you may want to reference my article on “How to Buy a Laptop - 7 Areas to Cut Costs”. Otherwise, you can skip right to my Laptop Buying Guide and see exactly what kind of system I recommend for the best price/performance purchase.

Do your research when buying a laptop. Do everything you can to help insure that you will be happy with it.

But, just in case, check out the return policy if you find that you really didn’t get what you expected.

World Bank Community Outreach Program

Community Outreach Program

The mission of the World Bank’s Community Outreach Program is to improve the quality of life of people in the Washington metropolitan community. The Program aims to make a difference in the lives of local families and children in lasting, sustainable ways – particularly in the areas of education and youth development.

The Program encourages Bank staff, whose daily work is focused on promoting economic development and reducing poverty in developing countries, to show their concern and generosity to the most disadvantaged populations of Washington.

Activities focus on four main areas: charitable giving, capacity building, staff volunteerism, and partnerships. Bank staff raise money annually for local nonprofits through a charitable giving campaign, and also for international disaster relief as the need arises. Staff volunteer with community groups, which can also benefit from donations of recycled equipment, furniture and supplies. A grants program provides financial support to local nonprofits. Local high school students are offered summer internships. A new program was launched in FY07 to provide capacity building support to nonprofits working in education and youth development in Wards 6, 7 and 8 of Washington.
Overview

Grants Program : The Grants Program awards small grants to nonprofits in the Washington area. In FY06, the Program awarded grants totaling $960,000 to 25 local charities and funding collaboratives undertaking the following activities: education support programs in the District of Columbia’s public schools, after-school tutoring; renovating low-income housing; HIV/AIDS prevention; skills training for unemployed workers; distribution of meals to street residents; Latino youth support; and prenatal and well-baby care. The Program is managed by a Grants Committee comprising both Bank staff and representatives from local grantmakers such as the Community Foundation of the National Capital Region. The Grants Committee recently narrowed its criteria to focus on supporting nonprofit organizations that work in education and youth development in Wards 6, 7 and 8 of Washington.

Funding Collaboratives : The Outreach Program actively participates along with other local grantmakers in five local funding collaboratives that are testing innovative approaches to addressing underlying social problems. A total of $230,000 has been distributed to five collaboratives in FY07: DC Education Compact ($50,000); the Community Development Support Collaborative ($50,000), the Washington AIDS Partnership ($50,000), the Washington Partnership for Immigrants ($50,000), and the Common Ground Fund ($30,000).

Learn To Play Amazing Grace With Ukulele Chords

Even if you never have touched an ukulele before you can today play your first chords. It is a perfect instrument to use when you sing your favorite songs. Let’s take a look at the chords!

Here you have the chord C on ukulele:

C: 0/4 0/3 0/2 3/1

The number before the slash indicates which fret to press down. The number after the slash tells you which string to play.

3/1 for example means, press down the third fret on the first string. 0/2 means, play the second string without pressing down a fret.

We will need two more chords in order to accompany this song. Here is F-major:

F: 2/4 0/3 1/2 0/1

The last chord for you to learn is G7:

G7: 0/4 2/3 1/2 2/1

Here are the lyrics to the first verse:

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind, but now I see

I will place the chords in parenthesis immediately before the syllable where you shall play the chord. Let’s take a look at the first line:

A-(C)mazing Grace, how (F)sweet the (C)sound

One way to play the ukulele chords is to strum the chord once everytime you will see a new chord in the lyrics. This will create a peaceful background to the song.

Now it is time for you to play the rest of the song:

That (C)saved a wretch like (G7)me

I (C)once was lost, but (F)now am (C)found

Was (C)blind, but (G7)now I (C)see

In this chord version you are playing the song in the key of C assuming that you have tuned your ukulele in C. This means that the strings are tuned in the following pitches:

First string: A
Second string: E
Third string: C
Fourth string: G

The first string is the string nearest your feet if you play your uke the ordinary way.

You can strum the strings with you left hand thumb. For your left hand I suggest the following fingerings:

C: 0/4 0/3 0/2 3/1(ring finger)

F: 2/4(middle finger) 0/3 1/2(index) 0/1

G7: 0/4 2/3(middle finger) 1/2(index) 2/1(ring finger)

If you want to sing the song in a higher pitch we can transpose the song up one whole step to the key of D. Here are the chords:

D: 2/4 2/3 2/2 0/1

G: 0/4 2/3 3/2 2/1

A7: 0/4 1/3 0/2 0/1

Now you only have to replace the C-major chords with the D-major chords in the following way:

C becames D
F becames G
G7 becames A7

As the most difficult part is not to hold down a chord but to shift between them I suggest that you practice shifting between two chords at a time by strumming one stroke on each slowly until you can do it easily.

Don’t Stop Believing Part 2

It’s just like when a woman is pregnant; it’s said that she is expecting a baby. She carries inside her the promise of a baby, and even though she can’t see it, she knows it’s there. The moment she learns of her pregnancy, she begins to plan for her baby’s arrival. She starts collecting items she’ll need and busily gets the nursery ready. She actively prepares for the arrival of the baby because she knows the promise will be fulfilled—it’s just a matter of time. She is expectant and she’ll wait as long as it takes.

We know the word wait means “to expect” or “to look for.” But remember, it also means “to serve”—just like a waiter waits on your table at a restaurant. Our act of waiting isn’t supposed to be spent sitting around passively hoping that something will happen sometime soon.

Once we’ve asked God to answer a question or solve a problem, we need to be eagerly awaiting His answer. We need to be serving actively, aggressively and expectantly. When our hearts are eager to hear from God, He loves to rush in suddenly with His solution. In many cases this waiting period actually serves as a time of preparation for the answer. If God answered right away, many of us would be ill-prepared to handle His solution.

Sometimes we find ourselves in such horrible messes that it’s hard to imagine waiting one more second. But we need to keep waiting on God and trusting Him with a sweet and simple faith. Then, in a way we never could’ve figured out—God moves suddenly!

In the Bible Paul and Silas knew about waiting, and they waited well. Acts 16 tells the story of how they were attacked by a crowd, beaten and thrown in jail. Verse 24 says the jailer…put them into the inner prison (the dungeon) and fastened their feet in the stocks. He was making sure they couldn’t escape. But about midnight, God showed up. Now it would have been nice if He’d come a little earlier, but Paul and Silas didn’t seem to mind—they just decided to start singing and began to worship the Lord. They began to wait on God.

Verses 25 & 26 say, But about midnight, as Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the [other] prisoners were listening to them, suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the very foundations of the prison were shaken; and at once all the doors were opened and everyone’s shackles were unfastened. God answered them suddenly!

When people patiently and expectantly wait on God in the midst of horrible circumstances, suddenly God breaks through. So don’t give up! Don’t stop believing! Stay full of hope and expectation. God’s power is limitless, and He’ll break through for you.

Phuket In Thailand

Phuket, the largest island of Thailand is located south of Bangkok. It is famous for being called as the ‘Pearl of Andaman’ or the ‘Pearl of the South’. Tourists flock this place round the year. It is well known for its limestone beaches, sandy white beaches, and tropical forests.

The northern side of Phuket is bordered by the Phang-nga Province and rest of the sides are surrounded by the Andaman Sea. This is the place to look out for if you have the knack for diving. Phang-nga Province is linked to the island by Sarasin Bridge and Thep Krasattri Bridge.

Situated off the west coast of the southern part of Thailand in the Andaman Sea and the Indian Ocean, it spans an area of approximately 543 square kilometers. But if the smaller islands are included, then it is estimated to cover an approximate area of 590 kilometers.

If you are planning to visit Phuket, then the best time of the visit is from the month of November to February. During these months, you will enjoy an average temperature of 23 to 33 degree Celsius. What’s more, you will get the opportunity to enjoy the clear blue sky and the caress of the fresh sea breeze and the sight of the crystal blue water. Phuket is also well-liked by the tourists for being endowed with Sino-Portuguese architecture and a sense of hospitality that is typical of Phuket. Travelers can choose from a wide range of accommodations ranging from modern resorts to sprawling bungalows. If you have a chance, you might want to visit Phuket.

Alcoholism - Impact on the Alcoholic and the Family

There are addicts of all sorts all over. Now with the neoclassical definition that many are proposing it would seem that every single individual is an addict of some kind and it is only the level of addiction that varies. Addiction is a persistent on-going condition where the individual or animal would crave for a particular substance(s) or seek to repeat certain behavior(s) in order to satisfy a need(s). As is being proposed this in itself is not a problem until the individual becomes physiologically or psychological unstable when that need is not satisfied (then there is no more self-control).

It is this lost of control on the part of alcoholics and other addicts that affect every single aspect of society. First and foremost the individual is affected in a variety of ways depending on his addiction. There are those addictions that are not obvious to anyone and may remain hidden and kept secret from those close to you as well as the outside world for several years (in fact others will only know of it after you have confessed). Then there are addictions that are a little more obvious but only to those who are close to you (friends and family members) and can only be kept secret for so long. Then there are addictions that you could see from a mile way (so obvious it stinks). At every level, the individual and by extension society is affected in some way or another.

Individuals who through abuse of alcohol have become addicted are more than likely to undergo a personality change. This change of personality will definitely affect anyone who is close to them. Some alcohol addictions lead to indifference to matters and issues that were once of serious interest to the alcoholic (a college education may no longer be their top priority!). Work ethics and the sense of responsibility that an addicted person once had would no longer be upheld. Personal pride (being neat and well groomed has now taken a back seat) and self-esteem would suffer, leading to actions that are uncharacteristic of the individual.

All of these effects of alcoholism would then be spilled over into other areas of their lives. Lack of work ethics and the continuous deterioration of the quality of work they produce may lead to them eventually losing their jobs, which in turn affects the finance and well being of their family. Uncharacteristic behavior of the alcoholic could cause them to become abusive (whether it be physical, emotional or mental) to their spouse and children. There is the factor of risk-taking where their life and that of those around them become less important and they are likely to place themselves and others in life-threatening situations. Alcoholism in many cases, may lead to disassociation from friends and family members in an effort by the alcoholic to either hide his addiction or avoid criticism from others about his addiction.

Alcoholism that has lead to the addict withdrawing from close friends and in particular family members could have serious emotional effects. In many cases family members who are close to the alcoholic are completely taken aback after becoming aware of the addict’s problem. This may seem rather impossible as there are obvious indicators of smell and lack of coordination among other things that would indicate that someone has been under the influence. While this may be true and family members are aware of the signs of the individual being under the influence of alcohol; you often find that it is only late into the addiction that they become convinced that the individual is an alcoholic; as much effort is usually made by alcoholics to conceal their alcoholism from other individuals.

Then there is the abuse that close family members, in particular spouses and children, are likely to be subjected to. These are likely to have even longer lasting impact on the family. In many cases, after the alcoholism has been dealt with and treated, the scars from such abuse would remain as a thorn when trying to mend broken relationships. For many families involving alcoholism, the deal breaker is money. Some addictions may lead to job loss for the victims; and financial problems for their family. Studies have shown that many families under financial pressure can only hold on for so long before it all comes caving in. In some cases you may find that these very alcoholics, in order to sustain their habit, would initially deplete all of their own money (savings and joint-savings with spouse); and when that is done, try to do the same to other family members. With the alcoholic’s obvious indifference to such problems and the financial strain that would be created would result in unwanted consequences. This is likely to lead to delinquencies in meeting certain obligations such as mortgage payments and utilities, which would only serve to aggravate the family situation.

Alcohol abuse, like any other drug, also greatly increases the risk of individuals developing health problems. Complications with liver, kidneys and a whole lot of other vital body organs are a common side effect of alcoholism. This not only complicates the situation for the individual but the family at large, as limited financial resources are would have to used to remedy such ailments.

Even when there has been professed cases of overcoming alcoholism, the damage done prior to attaining that victory is usually so extensive and severe that many lives (in particular that of the individual and family members) would never be the same. Lifelong relationships may have become permanently severed and the alcoholic, for the most part, would have been left completely despondent and dejected after the ordeal. It may seem unfair to many victims of alcoholics and family members where addictions have brought total chaos and destruction that those alcoholics need their total love and support. It is true, alcoholics need every bit of their love ones that could be offered when recovering from alcoholism and even more so while they are still being controlled by it. So whenever possible be patient and loving towards those who need you most; even when it seems like that most difficult thing to do.

Leadership Beliefs Critical To Success - Part Three

Certain beliefs, convictions and statements keep being repeated in our conversations and seminars and feedback sessions with managers and leaders. What follows is Part Three of our series dealing with the beliefs that are critical to success in the areas of Change and Self Responsibility and Accountability

Change

There are Four Stages in the life of every successful Change process – from the smallest to the largest. They are: 1 - Enthusiasm, 2 - Frustration, 3 – Renewal, and 4 – Success. They always occur in this order. Stage 2 – Frustration, is the graveyard of most failed Change initiatives.

Resist the impulse to create change in too many areas at once. Let success in one area create motivation for success in the next change area – and then watch the momentum build!

The single best way to create commitment and alignment of effort in change situations in any organization is through a goal setting process that starts with macro goals and creates the opportunity for every person in the organization to set individual goals that support the big organizational goals. You gotta take those Big Hairy Audacious Goals and size them so everyone can get their arms around them if you want success.

People don’t resist change – they really resist attempts at being changed!

The most difficult kind of change is to change behavior – but it is the most effective, longest lasting and the highest leverage kind of change.

The ability of an organization’s people to support and embrace change is its single biggest source of competitive advantage. The middle 80 to 90% of the people in any organization represent the biggest single opportunity for increased competitive advantage – and the most challenging.

Follow the 24 Hour Rule! When faced with a life altering piece of news, or any other event that demands a response – be it about health, career, family – step back for 24 hours and process it – do not make decisions during this period of time. If others press you to – resist. There are a very few situations that won’t allow a 24 hour period for processing.

Small changes lead to big changes. Identify the big change demands– then start with small incremental changes. Most people think in terms of big change – lose 100 pounds; quit smoking; learn a language; get a new job. Those are great, but they are made up of a series of small changes – the snack we replace with a 10- minute walk, the book we read every month instead of watching TV. And the sum of those small changes is huge!

The key to any change is to act - today.

Choice – to about 30 percent of the population the idea that personal choice is part of every action is a very liberating and exciting concept. It is of equal importance to realize that for the remaining 70 percent it is a scary and threatening concept!

When starting anything new, write down your first impressions, how you feel, the way you look at people and problems —whatever you think is important. Put it away – don’t look at it for a month – then read it and be amazed at how much progress you have made and how your perspective has changed. Write a new letter and wait another month to read that one. Prepare to be amazed at yourself!

Self - Responsibility and Accountability

Always assure that accountability is clear. There must always be a single person accountable for every project, function and responsibility. Where accountability is not clear, the risk of failure is high and the opportunity for recognition in success is low.

You do not have to pay someone else’s dues – only your own. Beware the vague “You gotta pay your dues” advice. That advice is usually just code for “You’re not going to be successful faster than I have been.”

You are responsible for your own choices, actions and decisions – in all cases – without exception – always.

Victims blame others for problems; leaders fix the problem. Find the lessons to be learned and see the same thing doesn’t happen again, and press on.

You are responsible for your own success at work. It may be tempting to turn that responsibility over to someone else, but remember, assuming you can find someone willing to take that responsibility, their idea of success for you and your idea are probably very different!

By the time you realize you have been complaining about your job or your boss or your career, be aware that you have been behaving like that for some time, and you may be “toxic” to others around you. If you can’t change that behavior, get out and start over somewhere else –with the experience having taught you something.

Share these with your own universe of people and be amazed at how effective they can be as a tool to begin discussions on the issues in your organization.

Does The Lady Really Care About the Size of Your Penis?

Many men worry about the size of their penis, the main reason they worry is because they are concerned that sexual partners may be put off by it. Let’s not tip toe about with this article - the vast majority of women simply don’t care how big your penis is! It is how you use it that matters, not how big it is. As long as your penis isn’t tiny (1 inch) or really big (9+ inch) then most women won’t care. And the one’s that are bothered are likely to be materialistic girls who are so far up their own backside they aren’t worth your time!

You should learn to love what you’ve got. And if you don’t then it’s important you do something about it so that you can become happy. When you are genuinely happy with the size of your penis then you can benefit from the knock on effects. Because you are completely comfortable with yourself it shines through in a confidence you may not even recognize that much yourself. This will benefit your relationships with friends and more intimate relationships.

What If It Does Matter

If you become intimate with a woman and she expresses concerns about your size then you should just leave her. The fact is that intercourse is only a small part of the whole sexual experience and really this is the only bit where the size of the penis has any relevance, for many women they can often climax in foreplay when you are kissing and touching them in all the right places. So if it really matters to the girl then just forget about her, as they say “there are plenty more fish in the sea”.

It Matters to Me But Not the Girl

If your sexual partner is completely comfortable with the size of your penis but it still matters to you then you may want to consider ways to enlarge your penis. Pumps and surgery are expensive so you may want to join a service that provides information about natural enhancement, this is low-cost and you can see long-term gains. If you want to learn more you should check out this review of a Natural Enlargement Service.

Go Off With A New Confidence

So to reiterate, the majority of women couldn’t care how big your penis is. So what if it is slightly under average. If you are sucking, licking, kissing and biting your lady in the perfect places she is going to be in ecstasy without even seeing your penis! So if you are worried about your size then don’t be, go out with a new confidence and make love to the women the way they deserved to be loved!

Awaken to the Benefits of Natural Food Supplements

If health food supplements are supposed to be natural solutions for dietary deficiencies in human beings, all natural health supplements should come from human food.
After all, fish eat fish food, dogs eat dog food, cats eat cat food, cows eat grass and dung beetles eat dung. That, by the way is how its always been.

Naturally it would be safest for humans to supplement their diet with human natural food supplements. Consider the overall benefits - weight loss, no obesity, natural cures, healthy lifestyle, weight control. What more would one ask for?

When natural really is natural

Carrots and whole grains are natural and healthy for humans that have been proven. So why do so many supplement manufacturers use strange ingredients in their products that have no safe, long-term, non-toxic history of use? The answer is not complex really. There is no other market for this kind of junk, so, as no one else wants it, it’s cheap and plentiful.

what scientists don’t really know are the long-term detrimental effects of these non-human foods. Who really wants to be a guinea pig? For instance, let’s take dunalliela salina thats used as a carotenoid; it grows in stagnant polluted water that no living creature eats. Its use in food supplements is based not on nutrition but on profit margins and hype-marketing.

Natural foods and food supplements are strong marketing expressions. And the majority of marketers have no issues with concocting tales, stretching the truth and misusing these words to promote their “unnatural” products particularly if it increases their profit margin.

Human food chain nutrition

If you want nutritional foods that go way beyond natural, you ought to consider whole food and even organic foods. These natural food supplements use traditional fruits, vegetables and whole grains as their source of ingredients. They are even guaranteed to be free of all toxins and have been proven to work. Hundreds of thousands of satisfied people in dozens of countries around the world have been using natural supplements for over 50 years to look and feel their best - naturally.

Benefits of natural food supplements

They encourage access to key nutrients that prevent disease. Thus they eliminate the population of diseased, malnourished customers.

They make artificial food supplements more expensive, putting their purchase out of reach of more consumers.

With the loss of vitamin sales, a lot of artificial health retailers will be forced out of business. This is good for the health industry at large. The fewer health shops, the less competition there is for prescription drugs.

They set the stage for the future banning of artificial food supplements that prevent disease such as blueberries, broccoli and garlic.

They allow for the arrest and incrimination of key proponents of bad health (drug manufacturers, retailers and consumers), removing them from the public stage so that they no longer have a voice.

They allow natural health critics to use circular logic to attack the drug industry.

Kevin Pederson, a regular writer on Diet Health Club diet explains the necessary food supplements required by our body to encourage access to key nutrients that prevent disease.
