Work It! 10 Things You Need To Do To Find Love Online

You may have heard that online dating is easy. Well, I have news for you. Nothing in this life is easy. Sure, online dating connects you instantly with millions of people, but between that and finding that one person who’s write for you, lies a road that is not always smooth. The truth is, you need to put some effort into your online dating “career”, if you want to get anywhere in a hurry. Here are my top online dating tips for getting results online:

1.-Spend some time looking at different sites before choosing one

When you choose a dating site, you are entering into a relationship. If you’re going to commit to spending time and money on someone (or, in this case, something) you should take steps to ensure you’re making a wise choice. There are thousands upon thousands of dating sites out there, so there’s no need to settle. Spending weeks or months looking at different sites is not really necessary, but it’s good to have a look around and see what’s out there. Read some reviews, ask your friends about their favourite sites and check out at least five sites before signing up and paying any money.

1.-Put some effort into your profile

The profile is extremely important and yet so many people still neglect it in their rush to start dating. Unless your profile is attractive and appealing, you’re going to find it difficult to get people to talk to you. Check out the competition, see what other people are writing and then try to do better. Try to go beyond lists of adjectives (”I’m funny, intelligent, fun”) and give people a real sense of who you are by using anecdotes and longer descriptions of things you like doing. If you want to show people your sense of humour - include a joke you find funny. It works much better than saying you have a “great sense of humour”.

2.-Pick a good photo

A good photo doesn’t have to be one taken by a professional photographer after a serious makeover but it does have to show your face clearly, preferably when you’re smiling and looking happy. It’s always best to get a second opinion from a friend, preferably a female one (especially if you’re a guy). Don’t be tempted to use old photos that you have lying about, especially if they no longer look like you. A bad photo could very easily mean no reply to your messages, so never underestimate the power of a photo online.

3.-Make things happen

Online dating is predominantly a numbers’ game. Whether you are a man or a woman, you can’t sit back and let things happen of their own accord. You have to make them happen by contacting anyone you find interesting. Don’t let yourself be lulled into inactivity by supposed dating etiquette. These things don’t really apply online. Waiting around while doing nothing is not likely to get you anywhere, so start messaging!

4.-Give people a chance

Not everyone translates well into the online realm. It’s worth going on a few bad dates rather than miss out on someone worthwhile. It’s good to extend your effort to the “maybe pile”, at least until you learn to apply your instincts to the online dating universe. Soon enough you’ll most likely be able to tell how someone’s dating profile relates to the reality of that person and make more informed choices.

5.-Go on a charm offensive

Putting thought into the messages you send people on the site is just as important as having a good profile. Even though you’re still starting a conversation, online introductions are very different from face-to-face ones. It’s not enough to just say “hi”, you need to give the other person a reason to contact you. Write a short, friendly introduction, telling a bit about yourself and showing interest in the other person. Do this by really reading his/her profile and referring to what he/she has written. You can also comment on mutual interests, ask questions, give compliments, etc.

6.-Keep your options open

Even if you’ve found someone you enjoy talking to, there is no need to stop talking to other people. In fact, keeping your options open is pretty much standard. Until you meet someone in person, you’ll never know whether you are a match, so feel free to arrange as many dates as you want and don’t feel like you have to make up your mind for a while yet.

7.-Go on a lot of dates

Keeping your options open should extend beyond the Internet. The key here is to enjoy the dating experience, rather than feel like you have to get immediate results. Dating is meant to be fun. It’s meant to be non-committal, until you’re certain you’ve met someone who really does it for you. Don’t hang on to every first date like it’s the most important day of your life. Play it cool and see what happens. You will most likely have to go on a lot of dates before you meet someone you like, so accept that and try to view the whole experience as a pleasure, not a chore.

8.-Don’t get overexcited

It’s far too easy to put people off by getting too excited after the first date. In spite of all the talk about love at first site, it’s usually too soon to tell after one date whether you are suitable for a long-term relationship. Even if you are pretty certain, it’s best not to be overbearing, but let things develop at a more casual pace. There is no need to be cold and distant, but giving the other person some personal space from time to time is probably a good idea. Don’t act as if you are already a married couple, until you are both really certain you have feelings for each other.

10.-Don’t give up

If you’re serious about finding love, you owe it to yourself to keep trying. Do not be put off by a few bad dates and a few weirdos. Keep trying and you may well be surprised at the results. Millions of people have found love online, so you could too, what’s certain is that you won’t find anything online if you stop looking.

Benchmarking Deviance

A few years ago, community volunteers working for Save the Children, an internationally recognized nongovernmental organization, made a clever observation. Helping Vietnamese communities in which child malnutrition was the norm, they discovered that a small group of very poor families were able to nourish their children against all expectations. All families in the community shared the same resources and the same socioeconomic status. Their limitations were the same. The community workers were fascinated by the apparent abnormality of the very small group. What did these mothers do differently?

They found out that in the anomalous group, every mother “was going out to the rice paddies and collecting tiny shrimps and crabs the size of one joint of one finger and adding these to the child’s diet, along with the greens from sweet potato tops. Although readily available and free for the taking, the conventional wisdom held these foods to be inappropriate, or even dangerous, for young children. Along with the addition of the shrimps/crabs and greens, there were certain other positive deviant practices involving frequency of feeding and quality of care of the child. It was apparent that the use of these foods and practices constituted enough of a difference to produce a well-nourished child.”

A wealth of similar observations has been made, mainly by non-governmental organization (NGO) programs. They all fall into the same category of ‘positive deviance’. Although the term has its roots in sociology and social psychology, it is the NGO community that has spread the concept around the world. Today there are hundreds of community and third world initiatives using positive deviance, many of them tackling the problem of child malnutrition, while others address HIV, family planning, prevention of human trafficking, etc. All these projects share the following characteristics:

(1) most of the solutions are already inside the community or the group;

(2) there is a focus on finding out what the ’successful deviants’ do that makes them succeed;
and (3) this knowledge is transferred to others.

A standard methodology based on these simple principles has been used by many in these now diverse projects.

‘Deviance’ and its opposite ‘conformity’ are terms used in social psychology to define levels of adjustments, adaptations or responses to norms, whether in a community, a group or a particular environment. Conformity as a mechanism is usually adaptive, that is, it allows us to become accepted in a group or part of it. It creates a sense of belonging, whether this is something sought consciously or that happens by default. Conformity is sometimes visual; we adopt a special dress code, a way of talking or behaving, or other stereotypes of the environment where we live and work. Long hair in a group of long-haired people is a sign of conformity with the group but it becomes a sign of dis-conformity or deviance if you live surrounded by short-haired folk in gray suits.

The same applies for Friday dress-downs, a practice started in the US a long time ago in which workers are allowed to wear casual clothes on Fridays and expected to wear suits or similar business dress throughout the rest of the week. Incidentally, what started as an idea of loosening-up sometimes became another form of tyranny. In this system, one is effectively forced to wear a particular form of uniform on Fridays, so the original element of partial unconformity became a point of conformity because people had to comply with a new rule. It would have been different if people were allowed to dress casually any time but that wasn’t the case. Fridays, in this ‘liberating’ system are as dictatorial as Mondays because both carry a conduct code. As I have observed many times, casual dress codes, far from creating diversity of clothing, have constructed their own kind of uniformity. A casual dress code for an off-site management meeting or retreat very often means that everybody wears the same polo neck, Dockers trousers, laced boat shoes and sunglasses as if ready to go to the golf course. But this is another story.

The word ‘positive’ associated to deviance seems an apparent contradiction. How can deviance be positive in the context of norms, following rules or playing by the book? But the findings of the Save the Children field-workers suggest that ignoring these deviances is foolish. I believe the applications of this concept to management are plentiful. Our organizations are usually designed to follow rules and norms, with plenty of processes and systems that one has to adhere to. After all, these process and systems ensure consistency of quality and homogeneity in the way of doing things. They are there for a reason; they have been proven effective in reaching some goals, achieving particular outcomes or providing management with some sort of control.

Rule-breakers
Conventional wisdom says you would not run a company without rules, processes and systems, and without obliging people to stick to them. Although this is obviously something that breeds success in many places, the reality is that, in any organization, you find people who do not follow the rules or the internal conventional wisdom. Some of them may succeed, others may fail. Some may be difficult to manage while others may just be a bit of a pain and others not difficult at all. Management attention is on the ones who follow, on the normative side of the organization, on the creation of an even more robust system in which processes can be followed by anybody and repeated again and again. Indeed, the term ‘creative’ has become an accepted way of describing people who do not conform fully or come up with unexpectedly different ways of working. So when we say that Paul and Mary are team players and very committed, we usually mean they conform to the norm. When we say that Peter is somehow ‘creative’, we sometimes do not mean creative but nonconformist, surprising, often cutting corners and eventually getting away with murder. I am of course exaggerating here to caricature the point.

What do we benchmark? We benchmark good practices, achievements, cost-effective processes and efficient ways of getting from A to B. We don’t benchmark anomalies, deviations or non-conformity. We benchmark the perfection of the current reality to make it a far-better-more-of-the-same. We discard deviations from the norm and label them as defects, difficult people, anomalies, lack of quality, unconformity, non-compliance, etc.

So far, despite the appearance to some readers, I am not making any judgments, but just focusing my camera on the day-to-day life of organizations. Yes, companies need quality systems, rules of management, processes and procedures to follow. In industries such as pharmaceuticals, regulators will provide an entire framework from which any deviance is punishable. It would be foolish to run a manufacturing department with no quality handbook or a regulatory division that doesn’t pay attention to the regulatory requirements.

But the language of conformity, compliance, standard processes and systems is pervasive. It has the ability to create two things: a sometimes false sense of homogeneity and control, which is by default associated with good management practice, and blindness or rejection of anything else that doesn’t conform. We should pay more attention to the deviants, the ones who have created success in similar circumstances where others have failed; the ones who didn’t quite follow the rules but cut through bureaucracy and made it; the ones who are ‘different’ and still achieving or even achieving more. Why are they special? Can we learn from them? Can we transfer that learning?

I know this may create lots of antibodies in conventional management but I suggest that positive deviance benchmarking, if we can call it that, has potential implications for learning. Let’s take change management, for example. It’s well acknowledged that the best changes come from inside, that is, when internal players drive the process, perhaps with external consulting help, but without the standard legion of MBA consultants doing the job for you. Any change management program that does not integrate the study of internal positive deviances, and deviant people, would miss out on great power. In other words, in some cases, the ingredients for Side order: positive deviance in generally malnourished Vietnamese communities meant some children had enough to eat change may not only be inside the organization, they may have already been experimented with by those who - whether frustrated with the system or not - have tried ways to solve problems, improve productivity, create innovation or, say, speed up product development, not by complying with norms but by bypassing them. If this is true, you can’t afford to fire these people because they don’t comply - you should give them the job of showing what can be changed by not complying.

My rule of thumb is that the more rules and regulations there are, the greater the opportunity for positive deviance. At one end of my spectrum there is a theoretical organizational world with no rules, no deviance or deviant people because there are no clear norms. At the other end, a super-structured, highly normative environment characterized by rules and heavily mapped with processes and systems, creating and highlighting the deviances more strongly. The more rules there are, the greater the opportunity to break them. Far from ignoring, dismissing, let alone punishing the rule breakers, we should look at them with the same diligence that the Save the Children volunteers observed the few surprisingly well-nourished Vietnamese children surrounded by malnutrition. Maybe there is something there that holds the clue for innovation, for moving forward fast, or for being more effective.

If you are in charge, by all means have your quality systems in place, your standard processes and systems, your standard operating procedure, your benchmarking department and your well-crafted world of rules. I hope, above all, that you care about something deeply if you insist on non-negotiable rules and behaviors for people. Positive deviance detective work, however, may provide clues for the future that no quality system, SOP system or cook-book system may ever give you. Benchmark deviance with the same diligence that you benchmark norms. It pays off.

Oakland Ca Real Estate - The Foreclosure Process

One of the realities of the real estate world is that when housing and economic activity declines, there are more homeowners who end up facing the foreclosure process. When appreciation is high for a sustained period, such as the Bay Area market from 2001-2005 people tend to be more aggressive and will go to great lengths to buy. In fact, lenders were going to great lengths to lend to those who maybe were not well qualified. In many of these cases, borrowers chose interest only loans with balloon payments and took out second, third and even fourth deeds of trust. Many of these buyers expected the market to continue the way it has, which would mean double digit appreciation for the foreseeable future. Of course we all witnessed the market come down in 2005, with appreciation coming to a halt in most areas, and prices even dipping in some other markets. The buyers who have adjustable rate loans with large balloon payments and/or interest rates that were set to reset after the first two or three years of the loan are the ones who are especially vulnerable. When the loan payments cannot be made, the foreclosure process looms on the horizon.

As a general rule, the lender would rather keep receiving the payments as opposed to taking the home and having to sell it. The lenders do not deal with selling real estate and will work with owners who are having payment problems. Sometimes the lender will restructure the payments for a certain period of time to allow the owner to get back on his/her feet. With this in mind, it’s always best to contact the lender before problems arise. There is a chance that something may be able to be done that can help the owner avoid foreclosure.

However when a homeowner has missed several payments and has not contacted the lender to make some type of arrangement, the lender may decide to begin the foreclosure process. The lender could be a bank, savings and loan or private party. The first step they will take is that the lender will request that the trustee (which is often a title company) file a notice of default with the county recorders office. A copy of the notice will also be delivered to the owner. If the default is due to a balloon payment not being made by the due date, the lender can require payment of the full balance of the loan as the only way to remedy the situation. If the payments are not met, the lender can direct the trustee to sell the property at a public sale. Before the public sale takes place, a notice of sale must be published in a local newspaper and posted in a public place for three consecutive weeks. Once the notice of sale has been recorded, the homeowner has up until 5 days before the published sale date to bring the loan to a current status. If the owner makes the necessary payment, the deed of trust will be reinstated and the monthly payments will continue as they did before. Even after the 5 days, it’s still possible for the owner to negotiate a postponement of the sale with the lender. However if there is no other agreement made, the property goes up for sale. At the sale, the buyers must pay the amount of their bid in cash, cashiers check or another form acceptable to the trustee.

With all the recent attention to foreclosures, many people have become interested in purchasing foreclosed homes. Any buyer interested in purchasing a foreclosed property needs to be aware of the risks involved. Foreclosed homes are very likely burdened with overdue taxes, liens and clouded titles. Any prospective buyer must do his/her homework and asa local title company for all information concerning the outstanding liens and encumbrances. Another potential risk is that title insurance may or may not be available after a foreclosure sale, and if it is available then there could be exceptions included in the policy which will weaken the coverage.

The Top 5 Business Lessons From The College Basketball Tournament

A note from us…

My favorite time of the year is finally here! No, not spring…NCAA tournament time!

My close friends know I’m wild about college basketball, and especially my beloved Duke Blue Devils. They’ve had a tough year but I still love ‘em. I’ve been a fan even before Coach K arrived on the scene. One of the most exciting things about the tournament is that on any given day, anything can happen. No one’s team is out until the buzzer sounds.

The tournament is exciting on so many levels. Not only is every game full of drama, but there are life and business lessons to be learned too.

Bring a TV to the office to watch all the action and you can tell people you’re studying the leadership and business lessons.

In the meantime, here are 5 lessons you’re sure to learn while watching this year’s tournament.

Go Duke!

The Top 5 business lessons from the college basketball tournament

Business life is full of sports metaphors. But the upcoming tournament provides us with more than just great analogies. There are lessons demonstrated each of the 40 minutes that every game is played.

Here are 5 big lessons every business leader can take from the tournament, even if you’re not a fan:

5.-You can’t win without good communication.
Business action is fast and furious. The best teams have constant communicate among teammates and leaders. Whether you’re letting team members know there’s a competitor sneaking up behind you, or that you see an opening to capitalize on, winners talk to each other all the time, are encouraging, and are truthful in their talk.

4.-When you’re rated high, everybody’s gunning for you.
In the field of 65 it’s all about knocking off the big guys. Every team brings its A game on to the court every single day. The lower ranked teams look for and will capitalize on every advantage you give them. So will your competition. You have to play to win every single day you’re at work.

3.-You gotta execute, baby!
Sure, those dunks make for great highlight film. But the team that is brilliant at the basics who will win in the long run. You’ve got to convert leads to sales. You’ve got to deliver outstanding service. You’ve got to keep expenses low. You’ve got to keep your cool under pressure. You’ve got to keep your eyes and ears open to capitalize on mistakes when the competition makes them.

2. It’s a team effort.
Every team may have one flashy star player, but the real winners don’t count on their star to win the game. Winners know their roles and execute them well. Each team member knows their strengths and uses them effectively. The teammates make the plays that allow the star to shine. If the rest of the team didn’t show up, the star can’t shine. In business it takes every single person executing their role, putting in extra effort, and allowing the stars and everyone else to do what they do well. Every single person plays a critical role on the court and in the office.

1.-Dream big and believe.
You can bet those unknown teams from smaller schools like Winthrop and Wright State started the season with dreams of going to the Big Dance. They may not have voiced those dreams outside of their own locker room, but in their very big hearts, the dream was there. When your company opened its doors, the owners didn’t sit around thinking of ways to barely get by. They wanted to win. They wanted to be the biggest fish in the pond. When others doubt you can do it, you’ve got to have faith that you can, stare down the big guys, and play with heart.

So watch as many games as you can and absorb the many lessons on leadership, dedication, and passion you’ll witness. Make a commitment to dream big and make those dreams come true.

Hearing Your Lesson Through Learn Spanish Audio

As everyone knows, the most common language spoken in the United States is English. But what some people may by now realize is that the second most common language spoken in the United States is Spanish. Subsequently, for business and social reasons, many people choose to learn the language of Spanish. For adults, learning a language in later life can be a bit difficult - especially with busy schedules and demanding careers to consider. It is often hard to find the time to squeeze in the hard work necessary to master another language. Luckily, the modern world has provided a variety of methods in which to learn language. One of the most popular ways in which to learn Spanish today is through learn Spanish audio.

No matter what kinds of lives we all lead - as busy and chaotic as they often become - most of us have easy access to an audio system. Whether it’s our CD players in our cars, Walkmans that we use when exercising, or any of the new versions of iPods or MP3 players that are on the market today, most of us have the ability to use learn Spanish audio as part of our instruction.

Clearly, the most beneficial feature of learn Spanish audio is its convenience and accessibility. Ultimately, through this process, you can learn Spanish in tandem with doing other things - while driving, shopping, walking, exercising, and even working. Often, this is an even better way to learn a language. Rather than focusing exclusively on hearing the instruction, it becomes “background noise” in some cases, integrating itself into your consciousness.

Another benefit that comes with using learn Spanish audio is the fact that you can hear the language, rather than just seeing the words in a book. There is no greater lesson than this when it comes to embracing the proper pronunciation of words.

There are many ways in which to learn Spanish today. But busy people have limited options when it comes to giving up the time that is necessary to master the language. And rather than offering just a page of lessons that doesn’t give you a feel for the language or the culture, learn Spanish audio can infuse you with the culture and nuances of the language that no other learning tool can do.

Choosing A Wedding Dress - First Steps

When we go out for a date or for a night out, the clothing we wear should look good on us or else it will just ruin our day and make us decide not to continue with what we have planned for earlier. It is because we want to look good in the eyes of others, we want to look presentable. Now, this is true for a normal day of our life, how much more if it’s the most important day of your life - your wedding day?

We all want to look good on our wedding day. We all want our dresses to be the perfect wedding dress ever. But of course looking for the perfect wedding dress is also hard and requires a lot of efforts from the would-be bride.

A variety of shopping technique are available for the bride. You can choose to buy online or buy it from your favorite bridal shop. The attitude of impulse buying is not allowed during these moments. Choosing the right dress for your wedding needs time (and money, of course). It needs time because you don’t want just to settle for a dress that you will see first. You would have to make sure that it’s a perfect fit, looks beautiful on you, and has a price you can afford. A good thing to do is to go from one bridal shop to another. Shop around. Canvass different kinds of opinions and try different styles of dresses. It’s good also to bring your friends along with you when you go shopping so you can have some suggestions on what looks good and what doesn’t look good on you. Doing this early is a good move so that you can have plenty of time to decide and choose among the different dresses available.

Why Is Revervse Racism By Commedians Ok - And When Don Imus Calls Someone A Bad Names - It Is Racism

I do not understand why comedians like Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, and that Mexican guy Carlos Mencia can sit here and get away with Racism. I do not understand how they can sit here and be racist against whites, calling us, “Crackers” or many other variations of racist names. I do not Understand why someone like Carlos Mencia can sit there and be racist against every single race in the world, and yet it is ok because he makes fun of Mexicans at the same time. Then when Don Imus calls someone a, “Nappy Headed Ho” the entire world calls for him to be fired, the NAACP calls for him to be fired, every African American takes it as an insult to heart. That is an oxy moron. This world we live in makes no sense to me what so ever. Bruce Gordon, a CBS director and former president and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People says this. “As an African-American, I believe that Imus has crossed the line, a very bright line that divides our country,” What about your African American brothers who Are racist against Whites every day on TV Mr. Bruce Gordon? Every bit I see Chris Rock in, he is racist against white people.

Not to mention the rap music I listen to on the radio, has words that degrade woman a lot more then Don Imus ever did. Viacom owns the CBS network, the same network Don Imus’s radio show is on. Viacom also owns comedy central, the same channel that has played racist television for years, the same channel for comedians like Carlos Mencia, Chris Rock, and the famous Dave Chappelle have had or have TV shows on. Do you see sprint taking their adds from those shows? No, because white people don’t take the racist comments as seriously as Don Imus, they know they are comedians. Maybe the African American community needs to look into this guys show a little better. Give me a break honestly, Don Imus remarks were not even racist, they were rude comments that could have been directed towards any body in the world. How can anyone consider this racism?

African Americans will jump on any chance they can get to put them selves in the spot light. This is getting old, stop crying, stop being racist towards whites, this is a new world we live in, so honestly stop accusing the whites of putting you down, and degrading you. Perhaps you should talk to the role models of your children like 50 cent, and the other rappers who degrade woman worse then anyone I know. Perhaps you should talk to the gang leaders who run the gangs your children are a part of. Perhaps you should start trying to influence your kids away from drugs and music that degrades your very own race. Stop blaming Don Imus for your troubles.

Online Affiliate Marketing: Bum Marketing Breakdown

Internet marketers are greatly aware that the secret to making money online is having the right product and being able to market it where it’s really needed. One of the secrets of bum marketing is applying this theory in article marketing.

When some internet marketers started using these bum marketing techniques, they were amazed just how successful and profitable this method can be for them.

One of the secrets of bum marketing and why it is such a hit is that it offers internet marketers a chance to market their products and earn profitably without spending any money up front. What’s more, bum marketing works! Thousands of testimonials both in private and public forums attest to this fact.

Another reason internet marketers love this method is because of the simplicity of its step-by-step process. It’s so simple to implement that even a kid barely out of high school can do it. Needless to say, it’s extremely popular among newbies.

Are you getting a clue yet? Bum Marketing outlines how to find profitable keywords, write articles about it, get it indexed by popular search engines and get seriously paid for it!

How simple can that process be? I believe the word is idiot-proof.

In simple terms, the recipe to successful (by that, we mean profitable) bum marketing has four main ingredients:

1.Being able to find a niche market you can write ads, messages or articles for.

2.Come up with a low-competition keyword phrase and home in on it.

3.Create an effective and valuable article and make sure you build it around your keywords and/or keyword phrases.

4.Submit your article to well-known directories and websites with the purpose of being indexed in the first pages of the search engines.

First, before you start shopping around for the best auto loan; make sure you get a copy of your credit report. Then check all the information and make sure that there are no inaccuracies. Next, compare rates. Interest rates on auto loans for people with poor credit run anywhere from ten percent to twenty percent. It is important to note that dealers offer financing through manufacturer’s finance companies, as well as deals with credit unions, banks, and other finance companies.

Talk to the Lender

When you are shopping around for a car loan, and you have poor credit, it is very important that you meet the banker/lender in person. Let the banker/lender know that yes, you had some rough patches in the past, which affected your credit. Give him some examples, such as a divorce or a temporary layoff. You will have more success if you talk with a lender and explain your situation, rather than just filling out your application.

Get Approved for Your Auto Loan Before You Start Shopping for Your Car

Finally, start applying for financing before you start shopping for your auto. Knowing what you can and can not afford will save you time, by narrowing your auto search down to those that fall into your budget range. There are auto loan choices for people with bad credit, just as there are auto choices.

Overcome Shyness and Rejection Fears

Almost everybody feels shy at times. Shyness is a common and normal human condition.

For some people, shyness can be a much greater problem than for others. When a person suffers from severe shyness, it can lead to a life of loneliness and missed opportunities.

Severe shyness is a problem I’ve struggled with all my life, and I’ve always been looking for ways to deal with it. One thing I’ve discovered is that many of the ways I used to deal with shyness actually made the problem worse!

For example, I often avoided social situations because I would get so anxious around other people that I would have a panic attack. I would leave parties after being there for only fifteen minutes. I thought that by leaving early, I was doing myself a favor.

Now I know that running away when I felt anxious was the wrong thing to do. I might have gotten over my shyness many years earlier if I had known that staying in the social situations was the wiser choice for me.

People who are extremely shy have a nervous system that always seems to be on “high alert”. They easily feel overwhelmed and anxious with new people and new situations.

Many people who are shy or who fear rejection try to avoid being in social situations as much as possible. They may turn down invitations to parties and other social events. They might cross the street in order to avoid running into someone they know. They often cut conversations short, and may even turn down promotions at work.

Unfortunately, even though avoiding social situations might seem like the perfect short term solution to avoid the anxiety of being around other people, running away is a big mistake! Avoiding social situations will actually make your problem get worse. When you keep running away from being in social situations, you make your fear stronger than your courage, and even stronger than your desire for friends.

By running away from social situations, you lose out on the opportunity to become used to being around people. You lose out on a chance to practice your social skills. And you lose out on many wonderful friendships and relationships you might have had!

If you actually confront the situations in which you feel anxious, it’s quite possible that your anxiety will lessen as you become more used to dealing with the feared event. Facing your fears takes commitment and courage, but the results will be worth it.
