Drastically Reduce Your Risk of Identity Theft

This whole identity theft thing gives you the creeps, right? You’re not only infuriated by, but terrified of the thought of somebody sifting through your trash, brazenly stealing your mail, or hijacking your wallet not for your money so much as your social security number. You may even feel helpless.

While identity theft is a serious issue, there are things you can do to reduce your risk of being an identity theft victim. The following is a list of just a few things you can do to protect your identity:

• Either purchase a locking mailbox or have a mail slot installed. For even more security, considered getting a post office box. An unlocked mailbox provides access to extremely valuable information. Consider it this way, which is worth more: your $2,000 big screen TV or the account number and corresponding information of your Visa card with a $10,000 credit limit? You don’t leave your front door unlocked because you don’t want somebody to steal your TV, right? So, why is your mailbox unlocked?

• Shred all financial documents (bank statements, credit card statements, loan statements, receipts, etc.) and anything with your name or other identifying information not once, but twice! Run the document through your shredder and hand tear the shredded material in different directions. Now divide up the shredded remains into multiple trash bags. Ultra paranoid? Burn everything. Seriously.

• Treat your social security number as though it were your child. Protect it at most costs (all costs may be just a little excessive…better to be alive and an ID theft victim than a dead man with a safe identity). Don’t freely give it out. Ask for alternatives, if possible. I’d give out my social security number to obtain a loan. I wouldn’t give it out to buy an ice cream cone. A ridiculous example, but it illustrates the point. Don’t write your social security number on checks. Don’t let the bank teller do it either. While she’s just trying to cover her butt, she’s exposing yours.

• Don’t give any information to telemarketers. Period. There are other ways to get a good price on magazine subscriptions or to make donations to charity. The same thing goes for spam emails, but you don’t open those, right?

• Speaking of emails, don’t click on emails from people you don’t know. Don’t click on emails from people you know when the subject of the email doesn’t make sense or says something the sender would never say. It probably contains a virus, possibly one designed to poke through your computer files and steal passwords and account numbers. You have a spam filter. Use it.

• Yes, you do need that $60 annual anti-virus/internet security subscription, especially if you are very internet-active or have children. Hackers and virus designers work day and night, minute by minute, to swindle you out of your money, resources and identity information. This is one area where you don’t want to go cheap. $60 per year is much less than the cost of a new computer or repairing your credit. By the way, keep these programs up to date. Most can be set to automatically update when you are least likely to be using your computer, such as late at night.

• Be smart about your passwords. It can be a hassle, but passwords that involve your name, your spouse’s name, your birthday, or your favorite sports teams are virtually worthless. A random combination of letters and numbers is best. Do you really want to throw off the identity thieves? Smash your hand into your keyboard. The result is your new password. Keep a file on your computer in a secure location with the password in it and copy and paste the password when you need it. Just be sure to copy something else when you’re done to clear the password from your clipboard. Or you can handwrite your hand-smashed result in a notebook and copy it when you need it. Inconvenience is the ultimate price of security.

Don’t let the identity thieves get you down. The most important thing you can do is be aware of what information you are giving out and who you are giving it to. All it takes is a little conscious effort to limit your risk of identity theft.

Finding the Right Online Advertising Company for Your Business

There are a multitude of advertising options on the Internet. Finding the one that’s right for your needs can be a challenge.

Before choosing a company to help with your online advertising, you should think about what it is you’re really trying to accomplish, and what you really need from that company. Your options can range from running a simple classified ad on Craigslist, to contracting with a major agency for a complete online marketing program and website redesign.

The first thing you need to decide is whether your online advertisement will run long-term or short-term. If you’re simply needing to run an ad to hire a new receptionist you may not need it for longer than a few days. If you’re wanting to generate ongoing sales over a long period of time, there are several different types of advertising companies to consider.

The truth is, you may not need an advertising company at all. If you’ve got a website, you may just need some effective search engine optimization. That’s a discussion for another time but understand your website should be able to take the place of some amount of advertising if it’s built properly.

So let’s assume you have an ongoing need for whatever it is you’re advertising. Now the question becomes, do you need help creating the ad, are you looking for more exposure, or both?

If it’s just a matter of driving traffic to your website, you have a lot of choices. There are many ad networks, ad agencies, pay-per-click services, viral marketing programs, email blasts, etc. that would gladly separate you from your money. Trying to decide which is best can be a daunting challenge. There are a lot of scams in the online advertising world.

Our advice has always been to try to target your advertising as precisely as possible so you’ll be more likely to “close” those visitors and you can more accurately measure the effectiveness of your ads.

If you need help creating your online ads, there are companies both large and small that can help. The cost of creating a new ad shouldn’t be outrageous no matter who you choose, but remember, one ad may not be enough. Don’t settle on the results you get the first time. Be prepared to change the ad and test it over and over again. It’s the rare company that will do this for you at no additional charge.

Finding a company that can place your ad in front of your targeted audience and do the creative for you is even tougher. Take your time in analyzing your options before investing a lot of money in something that doesn’t work or doesn’t reach your intended audience.

Top 10 Reasons to Set Up a Corporation

The corporation has been described as one of the great inventions of mankind. An entity on its own, the corporation exists separate from the personal fortunes of its founders, can pass from their hands intact, and may even outlive them. It pays its own taxes, can be sued in its own name and may have many owners in the form of shareholders over time.

There are many advantages of doing business in this structure. So, let’s look at the top 10 reasons to set up a corporation.

1. Protection from liability

This probably ranks number one among the top 10 reasons to set up a corporation because of the limited liability that the corporate structure affords its owners. Theoretically, the corporation is responsible for its debts and obligations. This benefit is not absolute though and has boundaries. The corporate veil may be pierced under certain circumstances and shareholders of a new or small corporation may be asked to give personal guarantees when trying to obtain financing.

2. Ability to Raise Capital

One of the top 10 reasons to set up a corporation is the increased ability to raise capital, when compared to a sole proprietorship or partnerships. Outside investors may be enticed by the tax benefits and limited liability offered by corporations. The flexible nature of the capital structure in corporations allows them to address a wide variety of investors with varying needs.

3. Choice of Tax Year

Tax law allows corporations (except S corporations) to freely choose their fiscal tax year, which may be different from the calendar year. The corporation can select the tax year most advantageous to the business and most appropriate a fit to its natural business cycle.

4. Business Continuity

This is not too obvious a benefit but certainly important enough to be one of the top 10 reasons to set up a corporation. The corporation can survive its founders provided that it complies with state and federal regulations.

5. Centralized Management

Shareholders in the corporation possess the right to vote for and determine the board of directors of the corporation, who in turn elect the officers of the corporation. This affords control.

6. Transferability of Ownership

In contrast to the other forms of business entity, the ownership interest of a corporation is easily transferred. Barring any prohibitive agreement among shareholders, or restrictions in the articles of incorporation or bylaws, shares of stock may be bought and sold freely.

7. Corporate Identity

Shareholders benefit from the sense of image and stability of a corporation.

8. Tax Savings

Corporations are taxed at a lower rate than individuals. They can own shares in other corporations and receive corporate dividends 80% tax free. This is certainly one of the top 10 reasons to set up a corporation.

9. Less Risk of IRS Audit

The probabilities of IRS audits on corporations are lower than on individuals, and disallowances are likely to be less.

10. Employee Benefit Plans

The last, but not the least of the top 10 reasons to set up a corporation, can be found in employee benefit plans. The owners of a corporation may be in a position to take advantage of several IRS-qualified employee benefit plans that can be used both to compensate employees and to reduce the corporate income tax liability. Payment to these benefits gives the corporation a tax deduction and the shareholders may receive favorable tax treatment on the dividends arising from it.

North Dakota Massage Therapy Schools

North Dakota massage therapy schools are often thought of as independent institutions that dedicate their curriculums exclusively to the teaching of massage therapy, and this is true; however there are also excellent massage therapy schools in North Dakota that are established as a part of local vocational and technical schools. Community colleges are a good place to look for massage therapy schools, and some four-year colleges and universities also offer massage therapy training.

Quality, accredited North Dakota massage therapy schools present students with a sound understanding of several sciences, such as chemistry, anatomy, physiology, pathology, kinesiology, and sometimes nutrition. You can expect to gain extensive, practical, hands-on experience in a variety of massage techniques and skills to induce relaxation or stimulate the healing processes of the body. You might also study psychology and communications for improved client/therapist relations. Curriculums in North Dakota massage therapy schools may also provide foundations of business for those who wish to become managers and operators of their own massage therapy studios.

Some popular forms of massage therapy you might learn would be Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, hydrotherapy, reflexology, and sports massage, as well as Eastern forms of massage, such as shiatsu, Reiki, and Thai massage. Students who wish to focus on healing and recovery should concentrate more on the Western forms of healing therapeutic massage. Eastern forms of massage therapy focus on overall wellbeing of the body, mind, and spirit. Specializations in various intensive massage therapies, such as pain management, pregnancy massage, infant massage, or lymph massage, are all options to consider.

North Dakota requires massage therapists to be licensed to practice this natural healing service in the state. Passing state exams and NCETMB exams are also required before licensing is bestowed on aspiring massage therapists. Once you have secured the proper education and credentials, you will be fully qualified to assume a position as a massage therapist in rehabilitative therapy clinics; sports, orthopedic, and chiropractic offices; hospitals and nursing homes; or in spas and resorts.

Generating and Converting Qualified Leads Through Your Website

Closing leads through your website requires a 3-step conversion process. Make sure you don’t trip along the way.

Every salesman wants new leads. Good leads! The Glengarry leads! (minor digression here - If you’re in sales and you haven’t seen Glengarry Glen Ross then you need to rent it today). Good leads make salespeople happy. At least for a little while. They’re happy until they figure out the leads aren’t that good, or until they figure out they’re not such a good salesperson - good leads or not.

There are a number of ways you can cultivate leads on the Internet. You could use your own website, an email list, a 3rd party website that you advertise on or any number of other methods that are available for getting your message out. Since most companies have a website, let’s examine how they might get the most out of it.

Think of closing Internet leads as a 3-step process. First, you have to convert browsers to visitors. Unless you’ve got a really popular company, or you’ve conducted a major offline campaign to promote your website, not many people are going sit down and type your URL into their address bar. No, they’ll have to find your site while they’re browsing, either through search engines or some form of online advertising.

We won’t go into the various ways to attract visitors, but you should always try to attract the the “right type” of browser - one who truly has an interest in your product or service. Anything else is unqualified traffic and serves no purpose in this admittedly myopic view of your online campaign. If you’re relying on search engines for traffic, be sure your site is properly optimized to attract quality traffic. If you’re advertising online, try to target an audience that is as specific as possible. Web traffic costs money (even if it’s free organic traffic from search engines - you had to build the site and optimize it, right?). Why waste that money on visitors who have no interest in whatever it is you’re pitching?

Speaking of pitching, the next step is converting visitors to leads. This is where you hit them with your “sales” pitch. If you’re wanting to sell widgets, you’d better have a sales pitch for widgets on the first page the qualified visitor lands on. We see example after example of companies that fail miserably at this. Their site is loaded with all kinds of information, but selling widgets is buried among pages and pages about Investor Relations, Press Releases, Corporate Officers, Company History and whatnot. If you want to attract and convert leads, don’t send the visitors to your corporate “ego site”. Create a new site specifically for selling widgets, or at least build a separate page or sub-domain that has no other distractions for the interested buyer.

Finally the third step is converting leads into sales, or closes. On e-commerce sites you simply need to make sure your sales process is clear, friendly and easy. Don’t make it difficult for someone to buy from you.

If you’re simply acquiring leads to pass on to your sales force or lead processors, it’s critical that they understand the unique mentality of the Internet shopper. By its very nature, the Internet caters to those individuals seeking immediate gratification. They want things NOW and the Internet is right there just waiting to serve.

Knowing this, how long should you wait before contacting someone who’s submitted a lead through your website? Based on our studies, we recommend contacting a potential lead within 30 minutes or less. If you’re waiting longer than that, you’re not alone, but you are hindering your chance of success. The longer you wait, the more time that shopper has to keep shopping.

In summary, strive to attract qualified traffic, make sure your website is “selling” or at least “qualifying” potential leads, and follow-up immediately with those leads that do come through your system.

How To Catch More Fish

That’s what many anglers want to do, right? Catch more fish? Of course. And one of the best ways to catch more fish is by learning more. The more tips and techniques you can learn the better. You never know when one of them might come in handy. Here’s are a few of the best that I’ve learned in my past 20 years of angling :

Use Gang Hooks - One of the best things that can be done to help you catch more fish is to begin using gang hooks rather than 1 single hook for any of your bait fishing, especially with live worms. Gang hooks are the best way to present a live worm. They work very well for Powerbait as well. Powerbait floats, and when rigged with a set of gang hooks that means that you’ll have 2 pieces of Powerbait floating off the bottom the next time that you’re still fishing, thus doubling your chances of hooking up!

Clean Your Hands - Most fish have a very sensitive sense of smell. So if your hands are smelly (have bug spray on them for example) the fish can smell this. And if the fish smell something that doesn’t seem right, that means no bites for you. A fish isn’t going to bite an offering that smells like an ashtray (which is the way your hands smell, if you smoke). Simply rubbing your hands in a handful of grass or dirt will help eliminate any foreign smells that might be on your hands.

Use The Weather - Use the weather to your advantage. There are some simple aspects of the weather and how it relates to fishing. Learn what they are, and it’s an easy way to increase your success. Frontal Systems are a big one. Simply do some research on the weather and fish behavior and it will pay big dividends.

Use the Moon - The phases of the moon have quite an impact on fishing. Certain phases of the moon mean that the fish will be much more active. Find out not only what these phases are, but when they occur each month. This way you can concentrate your fishing efforts when the fish are most active. Doesn’t this make sense?

Maximize Your Time - We all have a finite amount of time to spend fishing. This means that the time we do spend fishing needs to be maximized. Having your fishing gear organized before you actually go fishing is a big one. That way your not spending fishing time searching for things. Employing a gadget such as a bait bag will help you maximize your time. With a bait bag, you’ve got your bait ready to go, rather than fumbling around with containers and such.

Begin using any or all of these tips and you will catch more fish; it’s as simple as that. Many times adding one little tip to your repertoire can make all the difference. Remember, 10% of the fishermen catch 90% of the fish. Each little tip and technique that you learn will put you closer to being in that top 10% group, which is where all angler want to be.

Alternatives To LASIK Eye Surgery If You’re A Less Than Ideal Candidate

LASIK eye surgery is elective. It is not cosmetic, like facelifts, or medically necessary, like heart bypasses, but it does correct a physical problem and enhance quality of life. However, if you are comfortable wearing glasses or contact lenses, you don’t really have to have any kind of laser eye surgery.

There are a number of reasons why you might not be an ideal candidate for LASIK eye surgery. Not all LASIK surgery alternatives involve the same degree of surgical intervention. For example, intracameral intraocular lenses (ICLs), which are pending approval by the FDA, may become a good option if you are simply too nearsighted or farsighted to benefit from LASIK. A small lens is placed behind the pupil but just in front of the eye’s existing lens, adding another focusing apparatus and changing the orb’s focal point. When approved, this procedure could become quite popular, but probably won’t replace LASIK because of the additional risk.

There are several types of intraocular lenses (IOLs) that can be implanted in the eye, temporarily or permanently, to correct moderate to severe nearsightedness. In nearsighted patients, light rays focus in front of the retina resulting in blurry vision, so the IOL is placed behind the cornea to alter the focus and improve vision. Like LASIK surgery, this is an outpatient procedure than takes little time.

There are several different laser surgery methods available as alternatives if you are not a good candidate for LASIK eye surgery. One of the best known, and most widely performed, is photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), which uses a laser to sculpt the cornea’s exterior surface. (LASIK makes changes inside the cornea.) For patients with low to moderate nearsightedness and farsightedness, with or without astigmatism, PRK has proven extremely beneficial. This procedure is often recommended if you have certain corneal conditions, such as ulcerated areas, scarring, or what is called “recurrent corneal erosion.” It takes longer to achieve a final result from a PRK surgery because there is a greater amount of tissue that requires healing.

A new procedure called laser epithelial keratomileusis (LASEK) - simply a modification of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) - was developed by an Italian surgeon and first described in the medical literature in 1999. In the LASEK procedure the surgeon loosens the outer layer of the cornea (epithelium); but, unlike PRK, the epithelium is not removed but folded back so the laser can sculpt the cornea as it is exposed. After applying the laser, the surgeon replaces the epithelium over the cornea. Vision recovery following LASEK is usually faster than with PRK, but slower than LASIK.

The LASEK procedure, which utilizes the eye surgeon’s favorite laser (called an “excimer” laser), is not FDA-approved. Surgeons cannot advertise the LASEK procedure except to get subjects for clinical trials. Early results with this procedure are promising, but many additional studies are required before LASEK is accepted as a safe, effective procedure.

Using a variety of approaches, from implanting plastic pieces to reshape the cornea to using different heat sources than lasers (like radio waves and probes), doctors and physiologists continue to make progress in the treatment of various eye maladies. Somewhere among the many existing and soon-to-arrive techniques, from LASIK to LASEK, there is bound to be one that matches up well with your diagnosis, goals, expectations and comfort level.

For many people, the answer has proven to be LASIK eye surgery . Of course, as any good doctor will advise you, if your vision is well corrected with glasses and/or contacts, and your lifestyle and appearance are unaffected by them, your first alternative is not to have any laser eye surgery at all. But if you do decide to have it, LASIK surgery is a proven method and if you are not a good candidate, you have other options.

The Master Bedroom - Your Private Space

A sense of calm and peace is typically what we aim to achieve when decorating our master bedroom. This can be accomplished through clever use of color, furniture arrangement, texture, lighting, and of course accessorizing.

1. Color - is always the most important design element in creating a soothing space that is conducive to unwinding and falling asleep. Choose a soothing, softer color for the walls. This creates relaxation. Bright colors such as oranges, reds and bright yellows , although warm colors, actually stimulate the brain and may cause restlessness. You can use bold colors for the accessories to rejuvenate the space.

2. Bed Placement - Before arranging any other pieces of furniture, the bed needs to be placed in the proper position. It is the focus of your room. It can be placed on the longest wall, but make sure it is not directly across from the door. That creates an uncomfortable feeling..and can be unnerving when others walk by. For a more interesting look, you can also try floating the bed away from the wall or placing it on an angle if your room is large enough.

3. Textures - mixed with fabrics is a great way to add luxury and interest without being costly. The use of fringe, beading, and trims can create a designer look. That is something you can sew on yourself! Also, mix a variety of fabrics to avoid a dull and “flat” look. This is accomplished by mixing the type of fabrics you use on bedding, seating, pillows, and window treatments. It is also using a combination of fabrics for each.

4. Lighting - is often overlooked in bedrooms. There has to be a balance of light at all times. Make sure that you have all three types of lighting in the room. It is important to provide good task lighting for a sitting area or for reading in bed. reading. Also, if there is too much sunlight, remember to line your draperies and/or use shades or shutters to filter the light.

5. Seating - is a great option for those rooms that have the space for it. Make a statement with a chaise with a luxurious throw and pillow on it. If the space is tight, perhaps a small bench at the foot of the bed, or in a corner would be fashionable and functional.

Remember that it is the unique touches that make a bedroom feel like a wonderful retreat. It is a matter of aesthetics as well as function. Never overlook the small details that add not only to the character of the space, but also to it’s ambiance. That means using even your finer accessories like crystal candlesticks and beautiful artwork combined with fresh flowers to create the kind of mood that draws you. It is, after all, the last thing you see before you fall asleep and the first thing you see when you wake up.

Why not make your master bedroom your haven?

5 Steps to Great Writing

Where does bad writing come from and how can you fix it? Boring, frustrating writing comes from the mistaken belief that your reader is interested in what you have to say.

As a writer you think what you’re writing is fascinating; or you probably wouldn’t take the time to write it in the first place – but the reader? The reader is interested in one thing: Can what I’m reading help me?

Can it? If not, your writing has failed. Great writing is about communicating – if your reader doesn’t know immediately what you can teach them, they’ll go somewhere else. Get out of your own way – make your writing simple and get rid of everything that gets between your reader and what you can do for them.

Here’s how:

1. Tell the reader the purpose of what they’re reading right away. Don’t be cute or try to build suspense. Make sure that the first thing they see is how reading your document can help them. Tell them what you’re going to do. Then do it. Then tell them that you did it.

2. Use active voice and simple sentence structure: Subject – Verb – Object. Make sure the reader knows exactly who did what to whom: He ate the sandwich not the sandwich was eaten by him. Write as though you were talking to a friend, not a professor.

3. Don’t use any adverbs and keep adjectives to an absolute minimum. The more words you use, the harder it will be for your reader to figure out what you’re talking about.

4. Re-use the same words and terms. Once your reader gets comfortable with a set of vocabulary, stick with it. Don’t make them guess if the gripping tool on page two is the same as the grasping tool on page three.

5. Read your work out loud and edit. If possible, get somebody else to read it out loud or listen. If something sounds strange, even if you can’t explain why, get rid of it. Trust your ear.

The secret to successful writing is generosity – write for your reader, not for yourself.

The Top 10 Mental Hurdles to Getting More Clients and the 4 Steps to Resolving Them

Are you attracting enough clients or customers to your business? Do you ever wonder why you may feel blocked around this situation when others around you are flourishing?

Let’s look at the top 10 reasons people give as to why they don’t have a full client roster

1. I am uncomfortable networking

2. I feel like a used car salesman

3. I don’t like hard selling anyone anything

4. No one will want to pay me for my work

5. I have no credibility (education credentials or otherwise)

6. I have no time to market myself

7. I’m not perfect at what I do

8. I have a “shady” past that I’m afraid people will find out about

9. I just don’t feel like I know what I’m doing

10. I’m afraid…… (you fill in the blank)

Let’s take a look at this same list but view it as a list of limiting beliefs that coincide to each statement above.

1. I am afraid to be out their speaking my truth

2. I have no credibility, I sound unauthentic when I sell my skills, I sound stupid

3. Selling must be done in a harsh way to get people to listen

4. I don’t deserve to be paid for my skills/gifts

5. I don’t believe in myself enough to be out there. I don’t believe in my natural skills.

6. This isn’t important enough for me to make time to market myself.

7. I judge myself harshly and demand perfection

8. I am afraid to be my authentic self

9. I have no confidence and people will see that I am a fraud

10. I’m just plain afraid …….and here’s the punch line: I’m just plain afraid of being rejected.

That’s it. That’s basically what it comes down to: FEAR OF REJECTION. Oh, I can hear the moans and groans. Some of you have even gone back in time during this split second and relived being the last person to be picked for dodge ball when you were 6 years old or not having a date for the prom. Come back! : )))

Let’s go further. What is this fear of rejection about? Well basically if you break it down to the smallest common denominator it is a LACK OF SELF WORTH. When you fear rejection or reprisal by being you’re true authentic self then you have a self-worth issue. You’re business is a very personal extension of who YOU are. That’s a whole lot of esteem that you put out on the line each and every day you market yourself. Make sense?

In effect, what you’ve created is a negative Law of Attraction situation. The negative is what is boomeranging back to you. The image of the boomerang is a wonderful illustration of how energy works in the world. You throw a boomerang as hard or soft as you like, it still comes back to you in the same manner you let it go out of your hands. So it also is when you send out into the world negative, self defeating limiting beliefs about you and your business guess what comes back? Yup, negative or null and void energy. The important thing to note here is that the boomerang really doesn’t care what the energy (or intention) is behind being thrown, it just comes back.

Let’s erase these limiting beliefs that are causing your self esteem issues and thereby the negative boomerang. You will need 2 pieces of paper for this exercise.

Step 1: On page 1 make 2 columns. Label the first column “why I am not getting the clients I want”. Then label the 2nd column “the corresponding limiting belief.” You’re basically going to do exactly what I did with the 10 statements above. Purge as much as you can onto this page. Go back and uncover all the hidden sabotaging voices that are impeding you. They can even be people.

Step 2: On page 2 write across the top “My New Beliefs and Behaviors”. Write the necessary positive affirmation that would correspond to each point on page 1. Using my lists above, I’ll give you a few examples:

    1. Networking is easy for me. People are drawn to me and want to hear what I have to say.

    2. I speak eloquently about my skills and talents.

    3. My gentle persuasive soft sell allows me to seal the deal with ease.Etc…, you get the idea.

Step 3: Now here’s your choice. You can keep page 1 or you can keep page 2. It’s totally up to you. You always have a choice. If you choose to keep page 2 – congratulations! Now ceremonially, reach down to your shredder and run that list of negative things through it. Say the following:

“I release all of these negative patterns from every layer and level of my body. I no longer need these things. I choose a better me, a better life and an abundant business with lots of clients!”

Step 4: Tape your new list to the mirror in the bathroom and say those statements every morning.
