Mothers Day Presents and Gift Baskets - In Honor of Mothers Past to Present

Giving mothers a present for Mother’s day is a time honored tradition. And every year children, young and grown, have to decide what to get for their mother. A basket filled with delectable edibles, such as gourmet cheeses and crackers, candied nuts, or delicious melt in your mouth chocolates, is a guaranteed start.

Then add crisp, fresh white or a robust red wine, brewery-style beer, speciality coffee, cocoa or teas to top it off and you have a guaranteed winner. You can even start a new tradition of a new and different gift basket to surprise her with every year.

Here is some information you may want to know that explains a little more about mother’s day. Julia Ward Howe, a social activist, started the first idea of a mother’s day in the United States. She wanted a mother’s day proclamation to promote women uniting against the civil war. She was not able to have an official recognition of the day.

Appalachian homemaker, Ann Jarvis, who wanted to improve the sanitary conditions for soldiers during the civil war, inspired Julia Ward Howe. Ann Jarvis proposed Mother’s Work Day as a way of uniting women on both sides of the civil war to work together to promote healthier conditions for the soldiers.

When Ann Jarvis died, her daughter Anna carried on the campaign. The first Memorial Day for women was May 10, 1908. Mother’s day finally became official in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson designated the day as a day to fly the United States flag for all the mothers who had lost sons in war.

Today the more contemporary Mother’s Day has become a day for all children, young and old to honor the mother or mothers in their lives. Mother’s Day gifts, cards and phone calls as well as dinners out have become the tradition. Think about starting a new tradition of a special handpicked gift basket that your mom will come to anticipate and enjoy each year.

The Baby Boomers and The Stock Market

In 1945 the streets of New York City were filled with cars, people, balloons and confetti. Everyone celebrating the end of World War II - and we won!

After the war was over, twelve million soldiers came home from the war. And guess what! There were twelve million women and men waiting there for them and the party began. Nine months later, more than four million babies were born.

Most people would have thought, once the party was over, the baby boom would be over. But 1947 saw no different when more than four millions babies were born and the trend continued until 1965 when just three and a half million babies were born.

That signaled the end of the baby boom era and began the baby boom generation. Seventy eight million baby boomers created a lump in what would have been a gradual change in the rate of babies born in the United States and the lump moved through the years having their own babies.

But what brought this phenomenon about? Well there were a number of things. One of them is the twelve million men and women coming home from the war and the willing partners waiting for them. That could explain the first year baby boom, 1946 but not the rest.

Another thing is the war devastated the world’s economies. The industry of every major country except United States was destroyed. And only the US had industrial capacity to rebuild the world’s industry. We had the people and the resources.

Another reason was the women that had run the factories and the farms while the men were away, didn’t want to give that up. They enjoyed making their own money, buying their own things: clothes, makeup, cars, etc.

There was one other major factor and that was those coming home from the war were given the opportunity for free education through the GI Bill, and many of them took advantage of the offer. The combination of these four factors and a number of others created an environment where the US economy flourished - if not boomed.

The fact that the economy was booming, gave rise to larger families, people with cars, houses, a good job and a family. They felt they could support a larger family and they did. Why the boom ended in 1964 is any one’s guess but the baby boom generation was eighteen years strong and would have an enormous impact on the American and the world’s economies.

Now, let’s project the baby boomers ahead thirty-five years. Why thirty-five years? Well, the age thirty-five is an accepted age when a person has reached his peak productivity, he has a family, a good job, a car and a home - and the chances are that he will remain that way the rest of his or her life.

What does all this mean? Where am I going with this? Well take a look at a linear graph of the New York Stock Exchange, The Dow Jones Industrial Average. Upon inspection, what you see is basically a flat graph up until about the year 1981. And that is the year the 1946 baby boomers turn thirty-five. But it doesn’t end there. The trend continues as the baby boomers reach thirty-five years of age and are added to the previous years baby boomers. Thirty-five added to 1964, the last year of the baby boomers, puts the total of all the baby boomers at or near the year 2000, a time when all the baby boomers are thirty-five years old or older.

Those seventy eight million baby boomers have good jobs, they are educated and they make a lot of money, and they are placing their money in the stock market. They are investing in their company’s 401K’s retirement plans, IRA’s, CD, etc.

What does all this mean? Huh! It might not mean anything…other than there are seventy-eight million people plus their children that might not have been here if the war had not happened.

But here is one scenario. If you place the baby boom generation and the generations they have produced under the curve of the Dow Jones Industrial Average from 1981 to 2000 the curves appear similar. Could the baby boom generation be fueling the stock market phenomenal growth?

If that were so then there is a down side and that is the baby boomers are going to start to retire in a couple of years and those born in 1946 will be removed from the work force. The next year, those born in 1947 will retire until all the baby boomers have retire in eighteen years, those born from 1946 to 1964. What then? Will the stock market began to decline, a mirror image of the rise?

I will leave that question to the general public and the historian to decide.

Get in The Way of Randomness

Success is random - especially on the internet.

You won’t hear many internet marketers admit it, but their first big success in making money online was more the result of doing the right thing in the right market at exactly the right time than of good product, good planning or good marketing.

My first success was in the early days of Google AdSense (Spring 2004) when making money through PPC arbitrage was still quick and easy. I forget what I was researching on Overture at the time, but I found the structured settlement market and, in a few hours, had set up a five page site on structured settlements buying traffic from Google at $0.50 a click and sending it out at up to $25 a click.

In short order I was making around $700 a month from the site and ended up selling it for $3,500. (I sold because I thought something this good had to be fixed by Google and didn’t want to be caught with a worthless site…little did I know the fixes wouldn’t come for almost two years).

No amount of research or planning found me that opportunity, it was blind luck - pure randomness that I recognized and took advantage of. That opportunity didn’t magically appear from reading an ebook, hanging around an internet marketing forum, or listening to some conference call conducted by one of the many internet marketing celebrities.

It presented itself because of action.

In fact, all my successes since then have come from paying attention to the markets I’m interested in and taking action when randomness presents an opportunity. I firmly believe that any big success (especially in online business) has more to do with randomness than anything else. Those who are successful are ready and able to take action when randomness presents an opportunity, those who aren’t successful haven’t put themselves in a position (through action) to even notice the opportunity.

But, just because you can’t force these random opportunities doesn’t mean you’re at the mercy of randomness. If you know your success relies on recognizing random opportunity, wouldn’t it make sense to put yourself in a position to get in the way of randomness?

You can do this by closely following the forums, blogs, and opinion making sites in your industry and being receptive to the trends in your market. Don’t force anything, just contribute to your market (articles, blog posts, forum posts, etc.) while paying attention to what your potential customers are trying to tell you. Then, when randomness presents you with an opportunity, you have the knowledge and the standing within your market to act and take advantage of it.

Work Place Issues - Discussing Salary Requirements

When it comes to some of the most uncomfortable situations and discussions that arise in the workplace, mulling over the issue of your salary might be one of the most intimidating and stressful topics to deal with. Since the cost of living rises over time, it may be left to you to bring up the subject to your employer when a raise hasn’t been granted. At other times, you are just starting out in the work world or new job and need to negotiate the terms of your impending salary. The reason asking for a raise is a stressful and difficult task is because employees aren’t usually trained to handle this type of situation. Under these circumstances, there is a proper way to ask for more money and a right time to seize the opportunity. Successful salary negotiations occur when you have received a favorable response and the communications between your employers is still kept positive. During your conversation regarding salary increases, it is important to keep in mind that whatever you say or the type of stance you take will still follow you for the duration of your time at the company.

Assess Your Chances

Before you put yourself out in the open by asking for a raise, you should first assess your chances of receiving one. When you work at a job and you are making noticeably lower than the salary cap, asking for a raise is not unreasonable. Usually, salary caps increase for employees that have been with a company for many years. If you do not negotiate your terms of salary, you will soon see newer, untrained employees with less experience making more than you.

Since it takes more time and money to hire and train new employees, your record as a qualified, cooperative employee that has good job performance and attendance will work in your favor. This is because companies benefit more from keeping a worker that has served the business well over the years. Often, the best way to keep a valuable employee is to increase their salary.

If you notice that the company has undergone recent financial difficulties, you will most likely suffer a denial when asking for more money. During this stressful time in a business, executives are more concerned with cutting their losses than rewarding their employees with higher salaries. It is best to wait for a salary discussion once the company bounces back from a disappointing quarter.

When Salary Negotiations Turn Sour

Just because you feel it is the right time to ask for a salary change, doesn’t mean you will automatically receive one. Even if you have flawlessly plead your case, there is still a chance that you won’t get the terms you have negotiated. One of the most common mistakes that an employee will make is threaten to quit if they do not receive a raise. Before you receive an answer or after you’ve been denied (unless another job is readily awaiting your arrival), threats will only hurt you. Some people spend at least five months trying to locate a new job.

What Your Employer Will Assess

When a worker comes to an employer looking for an increase in their pay or a new employee is making a salary negotiation, the boss will look at many different factors. They will assess the skill level of your job within the company. If you work in a branch of the office that showcases scarceness of skills and experience necessary to complete the job, you will have a bit of leeway to negotiate. This means as an employee, you are needed.

If you have progressed within your position, this will help you when you ask for a raise because it shows that you have a legitimate reason to receive more money for the contributions you offer to a company. An employer will also do a little research to see whether or not you are currently getting paid the amount that is comparable to your geographic location, company growth, and other surrounding economic conditions.

Tips on Discussing Salary

Before you approach your boss with discussions regarding a salary increase, you should consider the following tips:

1) When speaking to an employer about salary, you should be well educated on the amount of money you should be making based upon your current degree, type of duties, skills, and other demographic details. This will help you properly negotiate without asking for too much or too little. You will also have concrete evidence to support your desire for a salary increase.

2) If an employer won’t negotiate a salary, you may suggest other ways in which to receive extra benefits, such as receiving more vacation time or other long-term compensation.

3) Before starting a new job, take a few days to review salary offers before giving a final answer. This allows you to make the best decision for yourself.

4) Plan what you are going to say before you have your meeting so you sound well prepared and confident.

5) Set a target salary for yourself, but present a minimum and maximum range for your employer to consider.

Ramp Up Sales Efficiencies with Sage SalesLogix Remote Client

Fortunately, you have Sage SalesLogix with Remote Client. Log onto the database at headquarters using your laptop or handheld device. Find out what’s in inventory in real time. Write the order and reserve the stock immediately before someone else can get it. And while you’re at it, check out your customer’s sales history and any outstanding invoices, discussing any issues that might be noted in the database.

The Answer for Better Field Sales

Today, most sales organizations are widely dispersed, with sales professionals and managers working from regional offices, out of their homes, or while on the road. To stay competitive, it’s crucial that they be able to download centralized data from headquarters, including customer data and information that might be specific to their location and region.

That’s why Sage SalesLogix with Remote Access is so popular. Critical customer information becomes available to everyone, including field personnel, via the Remote Client feature. You can create remote databases for branch locations and mobile users that containing subsets of your primary corporate customer database, keeping security tight and restricting access to only the data each person requires. Best of all, remote databases synchronize automatically with the corporate database, to guarantee that data is always current and accurate.

Simple Synchronization

Here’s another scenario for using Sage SalesLogix with Remote Access. Let’s say one of your account managers is working offline. They can connect to the Internet, VPN or a company network, and synchronize their data to the database. With a single click of the mouse, data moves back and forth between headquarters and the remote client. Now both systems are updated, and staff at the central office know exactly what is going on with the representative and their customer. Better yet, Remote Client creates a compressed Transaction Exchange File (TEF) with only the changes you’ve made, so no irrelevant data is transmitted.

Sage SalesLogix will detect a network or Internet connection from a laptop, and synchronize data automatically. Even if you have to transmit over a low bandwidth, like with a dial-up connection, the synchronization is still remarkably fast due.

If you don’t have an Internet connection, no problem. Just work offline until a connection is possible. All your data will be automatically synchronized with Sage SalesLogix at headquarters the next time you’re able to link up.

“Leading Organizations Through Transition - Communication And Cultural Change” By Deetz, etal

Leading organizations even in best of times is no mean task. When faced with challenges like mergers and acquisitions, transnationalization/ globalization, or total restructuring of work processes, the task becomes even more daunting. The authors have, set before themselves, the task of presenting an effective ‘business strategy’ for managing such transitions. ‘Management of culture’ is the crux of this strategy. In particular, they seek to examine the issue of development of and changes in organizational culture. They also undertake to outline the pivotal role played by Organizational Communication in this process.

What is culture? How does it affect business? Why should we bother about culture and what has communication to do with it? We will take a brief look at these queries in the following paragraphs. Depending upon the context, culture could be taken to mean degree of urbanity (as in civilized vs. brutes), fine arts, common system of values, traditions and rituals, or philosophy in general. All of these forms part of or have bearing upon organizational culture. Broadly speaking, culture is ‘the fabric of meaning in terms of which human beings interpret their experience and guide their actions’ (Geertz). The way the organizational members think and feel has critical impact on work performance, commitment, adaptability, and affinity with the task environment. Management of culture came to foreground after the success of Japanese companies. This success was attributed to cultural differences. Books like Theory Z (Ouchi), The Rites and Rituals of corporate life (Deal & Kennedy) and In Search of Excellence (Peters & Waterman) brought cultural concepts into common corporate parlance. The authors believe that, today, this has become ever more important. This is because of simultaneous demand for greater flexibility and higher control, which are contradictory in nature. Designing learning organizations, empowerment of employees, planning for quick response, etc necessitate provision for higher freedom, greater flexibility, and lesser surveillance and supervision. At the same time, the organizations must retain control to coordinate the efforts of its members for meeting the fluid demands of the environment. This goal can be met effectively “by managing the hearts, minds and souls of people, in short, culture”. After all, if the members willingly adhere to cherished norms, why would the organization need to exercise close supervision. To put it differently, the culture of an organization forms bedrock on which the platform for its success or failure is laid.
If that were the case, is it possible for an organization to give lie to the claim of T.S. Eliot that altering culture is next only to absurdity? Or can an organization pick and choose the culture as suits its needs? “While cultural values are deep-rooted, it is possible for an organization even to radically transform its culture by intervening in the culture reproductive processes. By accentuating or weakening various cultural elements, the culture can be given an entirely different shape”. Intervention in reproductive processes consists of systematic hiring (and firing) of employees, training and development, advocacy and legitimization of new values, arrangement of physical artifacts, etc. The strategy, suggested for the purpose, is basically an adaptation of unfreezing-changing-refreezing framework. Establishing a sense of urgency, forming powerful coalition, creating and communicating vision, empowering employees, producing small wins and consolidating changes and institutionalizing form the core of this strategy (Kotter’s framework for transforming business).

The assessment of present culture is the first step in this direction. “It is a complex and tedious task. Internalized beliefs, assumptions, and values cannot be easily observed or measured”. Deciphering culture requires observation, among others, of company history, socialization process, organizational stories, myths, legends, rites and rituals, employees’ feelings of involvement, identification and commitment, routines of decision-making and conflict resolution, and physical layout. This assessment forms the basis for considering the type and character of changes required. Not much is forthcoming from the book on this issue. Probably, this stems from the universalistic assumptions made by the authors. Consider an example; our assessment indicates that an organization has a concentrated power structure. What should our goal be? Is empowerment in the interest of the organization? If yes, what should be the level of empowerment? Do we introduce full-empowerment at once? Or do we chart out a stage-by-stage course? In other words, the dynamics of change process are not taken into account.
The authors have made a strong case for management of culture, empowerment and such other issues of current relevance. However, for a book that seeks to address the question of change, the most important question is not providing the justification for it, especially when its need is generally acknowledged. Rather, it is how to attain that change and how to negotiate the roadblocks on the way. The absence of such review definitely limits the utility of the book. Similarly, the dynamics of influence of macro-level culture on organizational culture or the existence of various sub-cultures within an organization have not been treated adequately.

This book is like a pulsar star, emitting bursts of bright luminosity intermittently. The chapters on Organizational Communication, Technology and Culture Development, and Ethics of Cultural Control are arguably its brightest moments. It will suffice to pen down a few observations on these topics before we round off. The first of these topics discusses various discursive instruments of framing (communication) like stories and myths, rites and rituals, metaphors, slogans and catchphrases, and artifacts in detail. In ‘Technology and Cultural Development’, the authors discuss impact of technological changes on organizational culture, structure, and power in a very informative manner. The topic on ‘Ethics of cultural control’ is also written well. But, it commences with rather an odd, and not so pleasant, an observation. “Despite the opportunity for abuse, leader-induced cultural change can lead to cultures ethically far superior to existing or native cultures.” It has two connotations. First, leaders are more capable of ethical behavior than their followers. Second, it has racial insinuations, since the context for this discussion is in the backdrop of companies turning multinational. One is left to wonder whether the authors imagine a hierarchical system of righteousness in which the natives come last!

Finally, organizations when handling transitions like mergers should deliberate on not just strategic, financial and operational aspects, but also on human aspects. “Cash flow statements may spell wonders, but the venture doom when organizations find the cultures are incompatible”. This is the central message of the book. Overall, this book is best suited to meet the needs of introductory courses in the field, especially for non-management professionals.

Natural Migraine Relief Using Vitamins, Minerals, and Herbs

Many people in our modern society rely on pills for every ache and pain they encounter. Some say this is due to the widespread use of illegal drugs that began in the 1960’s. Whether or not that is so, it is true that pharmaceutical companies are making great amounts of money through the sale of prescription drugs. Many of those drugs are being used for migraine relief.

Natural migraine relief using vitamins, minerals, and herbs is, to some, a better route. These migraineurs would rather not put chemicals into their bodies unless absolutely necessary. Just as they want no chemicals added to the soil or the air around them, they want to rely on natural migraine relief.

What to Try

If you choose natural migraine relief using vitamins, minerals, and herbs, you will want to consider the following possibilities.

1. Vitamin B2: Also known as riboflavin, vitamin B2 is said to produce dramatic migraine relief. In a 3-month study of 55 people with migraine headaches, it was found that riboflavin can make a significant difference in the number of migraines you have and the length of each attack. This double-blind, placebo-controlled study found that a daily dose of about 400 mg. of vitamin B2 over a period of 2 months or more gave remarkable migraine relief. Most of those who participated in this study saw the number of their migraines decrease by about 50 percent. The total number of days they suffered migraine also went down by 50 percent. While a larger study is needed, these results are encouraging to those who want natural migraine relief using vitamins, minerals, and herbs alone.

2. 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan): 5-HTP (a natural supplement) is not found in appreciable amounts in food. This supplement is manufactured from the seeds of an African plant, the scientific name of which is Griffonia simplicifolia. The supplement 5-HTP works, at least in part, by raising serotonin levels. Since the body uses 5-HTP to make serotonin, it is thought that providing the body with 5-HTP might raise serotonin levels. In a 6-month trial of 124 people, a daily dose of 600 mg. of 5-HTP proved just as effective as the standard migraine relief drug, methysergide. The most impressive benefits were decreases in the intensity of migraine, and decreases in how long the migraine lasted. Since earlier studies proved that methysergide was better than a placebo for migraine headaches, this scientific study gives meaningful evidence that 5-HTP is also effective. Those who are seeking natural migraine relief using vitamins, minerals, and herbs may want to try this supplement.

3. Magnesium: In the realm of minerals, magnesium is a promising natural for migraine relief. Magnesium occurs naturally in many of our foods: fish, nuts, seeds, soybeans, whole grains, and vegetables. The effectiveness of magnesium for migraine relief has been the subject of several studies. In one study, 81 people with migraine headaches received either a daily dose of 600 mg. of magnesium or a placebo. At the end of the 9-week study, those taking magnesium daily found they had nearly 50 percent fewer headaches. The placebo group had a reduction of just under 16 percent. Similar studies indicate that magnesium reduces not only the frequency of migraine headaches, but also the seriousness of the attacks. More studies are needed, but magnesium is thought to help prevent blood vessel spasms. You may want to try this mineral for migraine relief.

4. Butterbur: Migraine relief in children is often effected with this herb. As reported in a 2005 issue of “Headache” regarding migraine, butterbur gives migraine relief. Of several studies done, the largest involved 245 people. Over a period of 4 months, these migraineurs took either a placebo or a twice-daily 50-75 mg. dose of butterbur extract. At the end of the study, it was found that the larger dose of butterbur gave greater migraine relief than the placebo. Side effects were mild, making this an option to consider for natural migraine relief.

5. Feverfew: Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) is one herb that has provided natural migraine relief for many centuries, or so people have believed. Feverfew relieves pain and has an anti-inflammatory effect. It treats migraine by inhibiting the platelets’ release of blood vessel-dilating substances. It also inhibits the production of inflammatory substances. The scientific community has run several studies to evaluate feverfew’s effectiveness in giving migraine relief. One study involving 170 people offered either a placebo or a feverfew extract for migraine relief. Those who took feverfew were found to have significantly fewer migraine headaches per month than those taking the placebo. The frequency with feverfew decreased by 1.9 migraines; with the placebo by 1.3 migraines. It is important for you to know that not every study indicates that feverfew is effective. Results are mixed.

CAUTION: Before relying on natural migraine relief using vitamins, minerals, and herbs, seek the advice of a qualified health care provider. These natural remedies are not for everyone. Feverfew, for example, may interact with blood-thinning medications and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs NSAIDs).

Sage SalesLogix is the leading customer relationship management (CRM) software solution for small and medium sized businesses. Now the interactive dashboard feature built into v7 offers users countless new ways to access key and relevant data all from a single screenshot.

This remarkably simple interface gives your sales force access to everything they need to manage their customers and sales. Users also have complete flexibility to customize the appearance and organization of the dashboard for their specific needs. These tools will help you and your team to maximize sales, bring in more repeat business, and improve long-term customer satisfaction.

Unprecedented Control Over Your Day — and Data

The “Today’s Schedule” feature in SalesLogix Dashboard gives users a new level of control for managing daily activities. You can organize events and sort them by type, time of day, project and urgency. The dashboard feature even lets you distinguish between business and personal activities.

Similarly, the “My Activities” feature on the dashboard lets members of your organization plan their day on a more intimate level. Select from business and personal appointments, then click the mouse to perform a sort. This lets people view all daily activities on a single screenshot, for enhanced efficiency.

The “Pipeline Status” feature will blow your socks off. Use it to analyze the dollar value of all the tasks in your sales process. Customize the names of sales levels to meet your organization’s unique business needs. Many business owners say this is their all-time favorite feature of the dashboard, because it puts tasks into a monetary perspective, and

takes static data to a whole new level of interactivity.

“What we like best about the Pipeline Status feature is that we can view the total volume of business in each stage of our sales process in real-time,” says Colin Masterson of Toronto. “It has let us spotlight weak points where sales are being bottlenecked, fix them, and therefore close more deals and hit sales goals. We’re also now able to see instantly how many opportunities are available, the sales potential of each deal’s stage, the weighted amount of the sales value, and the average days deals have been at specific stages of the sales process. It’s great!”

Generate Graphics Too

With the Pipeline Status feature in SalesLogix v7, you can generate a screenshot whenever you want, graphically representing any step of your sales process for easy visual analysis. Click on any stage of your sales process, from qualified leads to potential clients needing analysis, demos in response to inquiries, negotiations you are currently involved in for contracts, and decisions that need to be made. Then choose whether you want to view your data in graphs, charts, or in spreadsheet form.
