Your mind is busy. It is scattered. You might even say that it’s cluttered (like my desk).

That’s a problem.

You see, clutter distracts. It diverts. It sidetracks. It prevents you from concentrating on what you want to be concentrating on. You’re reading your Bible, but you’re thinking about paying your bills. You’re wanting to pray, but you’re needing to fold the laundry. You’re intending to play CandyLand with your 3 year-old, but your shopping the big sale at Target is occupying more time that you planned. You’re distracted. Your mind is cluttered. And a cluttered mind won’t help you “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind” (Luke 10:27).

I believe Jesus’ good friend Martha had a cluttered mind. Do you remember her? She’s the one who, while her sister Mary sat at Jesus’ feet listening intently, was so occupied with the preparations that she failed to grasp the unimaginable marvel of having the Master Teacher at her own house doing a free private tutoring session! And when she complained about Mary, Jesus said this, “My dear Martha, you are so upset over all these details! There is really only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it—and I won’t take it away from her” (Luke 10:41-42).

Jesus said it: there is really only one thing worth being concerned about. It’s not Target or Tivo or T-Mobile or Toro or Tazo or any of the other ten thousand trivials that clutter your mind. That one thing is the wonder of Jesus Himself. Hearing His word. Knowing His will. Living His way. That’s your one thing. It’s the singular priority by which you can organize and prioritize everything else. And once you prioritize—seriously, is watching TV or cutting the grass really that important?—uncluttering cannot keep from happening.

We all know the difference between a generic “great job” and praise that really shows appreciation of the work we did. If you are asked to honor a co-worker, volunteer, or colleague, it’s worth the extra effort to find ways to personalize that tribute. Even if it’s a stand-up, quick moment of public praise, rather than a formal speech, making it personal boosts the morale of the person honored, as well as all those who are listening. And it will make you feel pretty good, too.

But what do you do when you don’t know the person being honored? I am sometimes asked to write a script for an award presentation. I’m not even giving the talk myself. Although not ideal, there are ways that I deal with this situation.

Ask for anecdotes. If I have the opportunity, I ask the person being honored for specifics. For example, if are awarding a great teacher, what made him or her enter the profession? What was the first day in the classroom like? What keeps them going week after week?

Ask around. Oftentimes, of course, the honor is a surprise, and direct questions may not be possible. In these cases, there may be specifics to pull from if a nomination packet was prepared, or I discreetly ask colleagues or friends. They will no doubt have some examples of ways that the person really shines. Funny stories—as long as they are not mean-spirited to the honoree or anyone else—are welcome. For example, I had to write a script to honor six teachers who won a prestigious national award. Their colleagues could share wry stories that shed light on the outstanding nature of the winners.

Look at photos. If I don’t know what the person looks like, or have only seen a head shot, I try to get some photos, preferably of them in action. I get a better sense of how their achievements and will be able to talk more convincingly as a result.

Try to meet them beforehand. Even a short encounter will make words come alive. Even if I don’t indicate why I am meeting them if the award is a surprise, the tribute will sound more personal.

You can achieve the same effect short term with a damp cloth, but you’ll have to keep re-wetting the cloth.
4. Keep your head cool. Again, if you use simple water evaporation techniques, you can keep cooler. Wet a kerchief or ball cap and wear it to keep the sun off of your head and the water evaporation will cool you at the same time. For those who wear head coverings, simply wetting your snood, scarf, hat, prayer cap, or hajib will give you instant relief.
5. Get UV resistant clothing and bathing suits. You can find UV resistant cloth and bathing suits online. Some of the bathing suits come with long sleeves and boy short legs or longer leggings, making them ideal for keeping your skin out of harms way even at the beach.

Dressing to cover up is healthy for your skin, scientifically proven anti-aging for your skin, and doesn’t have to make you uncomfortably hot. Enjoy this summer without worrying about harmful UV rays on your skin. Wear a cool straw hat, loose sleeves and collars, and loose skirts or pants. Refurbished goods are not near as good as liquidated goods when it comes to making money on eBay. This is by far, by far, by far the best way. I’ve made so much money off liquidated goods. Method number six is local auctions. In my area, in our Sunday paper, we have lists of local auctions in the area where you can go to. A company’s going out of business. You can quite often find a good deal. There are pros and cons about it. If you like doing that kind of thing, that’s wonderful. The thing is you never know. You can make big money on eBay or come away with nothing.

Method #7: Selling Knowledge Products

Method number seven is making money on eBay through knowledge products. Of all the products, this is even better than liquidated goods. This is the ultimate product to sell. A knowledge product can be an e-book; it can be an audio file; it can be a video file; it could even be a CD or a DVD, even a list of links for a Web site. If you develop the product yourself, the cool thing is you limit the amount of competition you’ll have on eBay, and thus increase your profits.
