Hairy, bipedal creatures haunt the backcountry of our world. Science dismisses them as specters of our imaginations, while many who believe in their existence brush them off as just big, dumb agpes. Certainly, they lack the attributes we associate with sentient life: self-awareness, language, culture, burial customs, art, and music.

But we can really claim to own the copyright to those behaviors? How smart are Bigfoots? Animals possess keen intelligence, the ability to make crude tools, and emotions akin to human feelings. We can learn a great deal about Bigfoot intelligence by examining the intellect of animals.

Parrots can talk. Everyone knows this. But few of us realize that the vocal repertoire of these birds extends beyond mere mimicry into the realm of communication. Parrots can learn to identify objects and speak the correct names for those objects. A parrot named Alex, owned by Dr. Irene Pepperberg of the University of Arizona, can identify objects by color, shape, and material. He also understands relative differences: “bigger,” “smaller,” “same,” and “different.” Dr. Pepperberg refuses to label Alex’s speech as language, though the implications seem clear. If a parrot can identify objects, he must use deductive reasoning to rule out the possibilities. Is the material wool, or cotton candy? Even if the wool is pink like cotton candy, Alex can distinguish the materials.

Other scientists have dismissed Alex’s abilities as a fluke or, more cynically, as unconscious cues from Dr. Pepperberg. Detractors point to other instances of animals whose miraculous abilities were shown to stem from cues in the trainer’s body language rather than from the animal’s own mind. To date, however, no one has proven that Alex’s speech skills originate in Dr. Pepperberg’s actions instead of his intellect.

Apes have demonstrated considerable talents in the area of nonverbal communication. They’ve also shown signs of what can be interpreted as consciousness. Many skeptics continue to assert that animals cannot possess consciousness, since they lack the ability to formulate languages. However, we base our idea of what constitutes a language solely on our own species. Who can say that animals don’t have language? Does a dog’s barking convey different meanings to other dogs depending on the pitch and duration? Can gorillas converse through gestures? Until we can telepathically enter the minds of animals, and listen in to their thoughts, we shouldn’t presume to understand their mental processes. We can, however, examine their behavior for clues.

The most notable example of nonhuman communication comes from the ape world. A gorilla named Koko has learned to communicate with her handlers via sign language. She can modify her responses to indicate a specific request, such as “scratch my neck,” instead of just answering yes or no. Dr. Valerie Chalcraft spoke about Koko’s linguistic skills at the Gestural Communication in Nonhuman and Human Primates Workshop at the Max Planck Institute in March 2004. Dr. Chalcraft described how, when asked where she would like to be tickled, Koko would instruct her handler to tickle a particular part of her body, such as her foot. According to Dr. Chalcraft, this behavior echoes the way in which humans alter their signing to be more specific.

A study of chimpanzees found that they could both recognize their own images in mirrors and realize the image they saw as a reflection. When the researcher placed colored dots on the chimps’ foreheads, the animals would touch the dot on their heads instead of the dot in the reflection on the mirror. They seemed to understand the difference between the reflected image and their own bodies, while also recognizing they’d spotted themselves in the mirror. In another case, a chimp grasped the concept of death-when informed her baby had died, Washoe became withdrawn and depressed. Chimps also can learn to make and use stone tools. In some cases, chimpanzees travel great distances to find a good rock, suitable for tool use back at the food source.

Elsewhere in the animal kingdom, the caretakers of a dolphin named Ake taught her an artificial language consisting of gestures. Each gesture represented a word: the name of an object, an action, or the position of an object. Once Ake had mastered the language, the researchers complicated things by introducing grammar, constructing sentences of up to five gesture words. Ake excelled at this too. Not only did she comprehend the syntax of each sentence based on words already in her vocabulary, she could understand sentences built on completely new words. She even realized when her trainers tried to trick her with nonsense words, or instructions to perform impossible tasks.

The evidence does more than suggest animals possess incredible intelligence, it practically screams at us. Whether ape or hominid, Bigfoots are animals. If we underestimate the intelligence of animals whose existence no one disputes, then we must reevaluate how we measure the intelligence of a species about which we know so little.

Animals are smart. Why should we expect less from Bigfoots?

When an interviewer asks this question, this is an opportunity to examine your self image. Do not get caught without an answer to this question that is short and effective. Do not oversell or undersell yourself. You can start with something like this:

“My strengths include problem solving, creativity, working well with others and other skills that contribute to success in the job. Is there a specific strength you are looking for that I can demonstrate?”

Notice the question associated with the sample response. As a job candidate, your objective should be to narrow down any vague generalities posed by the interviewer, into pinpointed specifics. There are a number of reasons why you should do this. An interviewer may simply be in the habit of asking general types of questions, because they want to see how people will react in a general way. By narrowing the question to specifics, you can test whether the person is looking for broad answers, or waiting to hear something specific from you that their question does not identify.

You might be surprised how many people ask you a vague question, but are actually looking for a specific type of response. When you attempt to narrow the vague general question to a specific example of what the interviewer wants to know, and the person does not give you more information, you can set your answers toward giving generalized, short responses like the one in the example above. These general answers sound good when given spontaneously, and do not have a lot of information that can damage the impression you are creating. When the interviewer does provide more specific information, you should listen carefully to what they are asking, and give the best response you can to meet their clarification. When specific needs are identified, you are getting insights into what the person is truly looking for, and it is your chance to fill in those needs with the information you give in return.

When you have successfully figured out what level of information the interviewer is trying to get from their line of questioning, you can set your approach to stay tuned to that level. If the depth of questions is general, keep your answers equally as general. If your own probing reveals the desire for more specific answers, you can confine your answers to meet those specifics, and continue to probe for clarification of vaguely worded questions, until you have a clear idea what they really want to know. Use a variety of probing questions to dig for clarification, rather than repeating the same question continuously. For example, saying things like, “I’m not sure what you are looking for here,” “Can you be more specific,” “Did I give you what you need to know,” “Is there more you need from me on that,” are all valid variations on such responses.

If you wish to set the tone for your conversation early, you can try going right to the point. You can do this by simply asking, “Are you going to be interested in looking at specifics in this conversation, or will we be discussing things from a general point of view?” By giving this perspective, you will be challenging the interviewer to make a clear distinction between vague general questions, and targeted specifics. In all likelihood, their response will let you know they intend to ask you both specific and general questions, which allows you to set your compass accordingly.

You should establish this practice early in your conversation with an interviewer. This way, you will not find yourself off track with the mentality of the person you are speaking with, while ensuring your best chance to make a winning impression. Sometimes people seem to be expecting you to read their mind rather than simply asking what they want to know. An inexperienced interviewer may be imitating the kinds of questions they have heard from a professional, without really understanding what to expect themselves from the answers they get in return! When this happens, you may be giving wonderful answers for the type of questions being asked, but missing the interviewer’s expectations.

The point of any interview is to make a good impression on the people you meet, and to get them to identify you as the best candidate. You must accomplish this without knowing what preparation steps took place leading up to your conversation. If the interviewer is asking you a list of questions that were prepared by someone else, they may not have a clear understanding themselves about why some of the questions are important to ask. Just as it is important for them to get acquainted with your qualifications for a position, you should be paying close attention to finding out their mentality, and what triggers a positive response from them. As you continue building your own interview notes, you should keep these principles in mind throughout the process.

If you can focus on discovering how to establish a successful two-way communication with the people responsible for selecting a candidate, the exercise will help you to forget about being nervous and tune you toward becoming more able to deal with the process. It is just as important for you to learn all you can about the kind of people working for an organization as it is for them to find out about you. If the people you meet during an interview are not the sort of people you enjoy working with professionally, it may be you who decides that you are not the right person for this opportunity.

When you come away from an interview feeling punished or inadequate, you should carefully consider the consequence if you later find that company is willing to offer you a job. If they have not made you feel welcome during the interview, what do you think it will be like when you go to work for them on a daily basis? Being controlled or manipulated by people who are difficult to read and understand is not a recipe for long term success. If a manager or personnel representative makes you feel small and unimportant, shake the dust from your feet and keep looking for what you want.

Whatever your sex life was like before the onset of menopause, you can guarantee that the physical and emotional changes you go through at this time will have some sort of impact. While some women find that menopause causes their libido to drop so that they can’t bear the thought of having sex, some find their new situation sexually liberating.

The physical changes that may affect your libido after menopause are caused by a decrease in various sex hormones in the body. Levels of estrogen that promotes enhanced sensitivity, progesterone that maintains libido, and testosterone which produces sexual desire and lubrication, all drop dramatically during the menopause.

Because of this hormone reduction many women experience a slower sexual response, taking longer to become aroused or to reach orgasm. They may also experience anything ranging from a mild discomfort to intense pain and bleeding during intercourse. This is caused by the vaginal walls thinning because of lack of estrogen.

Psychologically many women don’t feel like having sex. They may be experiencing insomnia, hot flashes and night sweats which aren’t much of an aphrodisiac. They may also be feeling self conscious about the physical changes to their body including increased weight, breast changes and incontinence.

Going through the menopause makes many women feel old and undesirable, which in turns lowers their libido. Some women can’t bear to be touched after the menopause, but whether this is a physical or psychological issue is often unclear. Rejecting their partners sexually can induce feelings of guilt and depression which often makes the situation worse.

The flip side of this is that some women are more able to relax and enjoy sex after the menopause. They no longer have the worry of contraception and becoming pregnant so they are able to be more adventurous. Some women experience an emotional roller coaster during their menstrual cycle, and the menopause can bring relief from this, resulting in better relationships and therefore a better six life.

If you are experiencing difficulties with sex following the menopause, there are various things you can try. Take longer building up to having sex, perhaps using massage or taking a bath with your partner.

You could limit full intercourse and use other methods of pleasuring each other; this may even spice up your sex life as you are inspired to try new things. Remember, however, that regular intercourse does improve the muscle tone and lubrication of the vagina, so perhaps you should not avoid intercourse altogether. Masturbating regularly can also help you to become aroused more easily and achieve orgasm.

You should avoid highly perfumed bath products as these will increase vaginal dryness. You could consider using water based lubricants to make sex more comfortable and pleasurable, and perhaps using a hormone cream, such as natural progesterone cream to keep your vaginal area healthy.

Although the menopause can have a dramatic impact on your body and mind, it does not have to mark the end of your sex life. Take time to relax and enjoy the freedom of sex without contraception, or simply use this time to become more intimate with your partner.

When your firm is brand new, I encourage you to give away your product or service if that is what it takes to get a strong reference account. Consider doing business “pro bono” as my lawyer friends call it. Give it away and service the heck out of them in exchange for a good reference.

If your existing clients are happy, ask them to write it down or ask them for permission to have a prospect call them. Most of the time they will be glad to help out. If they say no, they will be complimented that you asked.

Peer references resonate because prospects find them believable. Meanwhile, the prospect is disinclined to believe the sales rep, even though the rep may truly be expert on the subject and may know far more than the buyer. This also explains why advertising is such an inefficient tool: it is obviously paid for by the sponsoring firm and is not believable. Likewise, the buyer knows that the rep is paid to sell. References provide a work-around for this trust problem.

By the way, the venture capital community figured out about reference accounts a long time ago. They frequently build portfolios of firms that sell to each other and act as reference accounts for each other. A little incestuous you proclaim? I agree. Nevertheless, it works and I guess all is fair when it comes to the VCs.

No better salesperson exists than the happy customer. Reference accounts are critical to the successful marketing effort at any business.

When traders speak of putting on calendar spreads, they normally refer to buying the further month options and selling the closer month option. While I can not argue with this, it is not best for all options.

I am going to be general in this article because prices change and I don’t want to cause confusion.

For out of the money options, you might want to consider doing the opposite. Buy the close month and sell the further month. This is because the theta is advantageous to you if you are buying the front month. The further the months are from each other, the more you have an advantage. Also, figure out the price per day of the option. Which option costs more and which is cheaper per day. You can find options that are equal distance away in strike from the futures but one option is 3 times cheaper per day than the other.

For the at the money options, the regular calendar spreads are the way to go. For strike prices that are far out of the money, the reverse calendar spread is better. One reason is the theta advantage. Another is the price per day.

So keep your eyes open for out of the money options and check their price per day and theta and compare them to different months. If you are looking at different months, make sure that the month you are thinking of buying, is the same amount of strike prices away or more from the underlying, as the one you sell. Meaning, if you buy an option that is 5 strikes away from the underlying, the one you sell should be at least 5 strike prices away from the underlying. This is so if there is a big move, both options will be in the money at roughly the same time.

T’is the season: maybe not the season to be merry but definitely the season to eat a hot dog, have a beer, and bask in the sun at your local ball park. Move over Santa, mistletoe, and reindeer poop: baseball season is here.

This sentiment is a particularly great statement for Florida folk: of all the places to be a baseball fan, Florida is one of the best; it was made for fun in the sun.

This year, Florida fans who aren’t rooting for the Marlins may find themselves filling the seats at Tropicana Field to cheer on the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

As one of the youngest franchises in baseball, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays have had their sea legs for several seasons: like many new teams, they are just finding their footing. However, it appeared that they had almost found it halfway through last season: at the 2006 All Star break the Devil Rays were only eleven games below .500. With a strong second half, they would have been able to make themselves into real contenders.

Upper management, however, had other plans. Rather than contending for a playoff berth, the Devil Rays traded many veteran players for younger players who could contribute more to the future of the team. The future, as they say, is starting this season.

When the Tampa Bay Devil Rays took the mound for the 2007 opening day, they had the youngest starting lineup since the Minnesota Twins in 1983. Youth, it turns out, didn’t win this one: the Devil Rays lost to the New York Yankees by a score of 9-5.

Yet, the season is just beginning and anything can happen. Fans hope that Tampa Bay will follow the footsteps of the other Florida team and start making their way towards a championship.

As for what the rest of the season will hold, the Devil Rays definitely have their work cut out for them. Not only do they compete in the AL East - a division that include the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox - but many of their players are young and unproven. No one knows for sure which way they will go.

This unknowing, however, is part of the excitement: watching a player grow to greatness is one of the things baseball is all about. Among the Tampa Bay Devil Rays who have to chance to do just that are third baseman Akinori Iwamura, infielder B.J. Upton, outfielder Delmon Young, and shortstop Ben Zobrist.

The strength of the Devil Rays rests on the shoulders of their outfielders: in addition to Delmon Young, Carl Crawford and Rocco Baldelli could also have breakout seasons. The Rays need great outfielders, and ones that don’t mind being busy. That brings us to the weakness of the Devil Rays: the pitching.

Last season, the Devil Ray’s rotation received the fewest wins in the entire league with 36. They were also tied for the most losses at 70. Yet on a bright side sits Scott Kazmir, a man who could become a great pitcher. But he certainly can’t pitch every game: the Devil Rays are going to have to get better armed, and better arms. This young team must also learn how to win on the road. Last year their road record teetered on ridiculous; they had 20 wins and 61 losses.

If the pitching can solidify and the Devil Rays learn to win when they aren’t in Florida, they might have a chance to contend. Playing in the tough AL East is also an issue; one they can only resolve by getting tough as well.
