Constipation - Sometimes Not All Things Come to Pass

There is a famous saying Jesus once quoted, “All things must come to pass.” Sometimes, no other words ring more true. Unfortunately, there are people who suffer from an inability to pass anything. I’m not talking about exams, either. I’m talking about a subject that’s a little more sensitive and a lot more personal. I’m talking about constipation.

We asked a few leading doctors on the subject of digestive disorders about constipation and here are some of the more common questions doctors get asked concerning the subject matter. Some of these doctors were also kind enough to give some answers and suggestions.

What Is Constipation?

Constipation happens when bowel movements become difficult or less frequent. The normal length oftime between bowel movements varies from person to person. Some people have bowel movements around three times a day; while others, only one or two times a week. Going longer than three days without a bowel movement is too long. After three days, the stool or feces become harder and more difficult to pass.

You are considered constipated if you have two or more of the following for at least three months:

  • Straining during a bowel movement more than a quarter of the time.
  • Hard stools more than a quarter of the time.
  • Incomplete evacuation more than a quarter of the time.
  • Two or fewer bowel movements in a week.

What Causes Constipation?

Constipation is usually caused by a disorder of bowel function rather than a structural problem.

Common causes of constipation include:

  • Inadequate water intake.
  • Inadequate fiber in the diet.
  • A disruption of regular diet or routine; traveling.
  • Inadequate activity or exercise or immobility.
  • Eating large amounts of dairy products.
  • Stress.
  • Resisting the urge to have a bowel movement, this is sometimes the result of pain from hemorrhoids.
  • Overuse of laxatives which, over time, can weaken the bowel muscles.
  • Antacid medicines containing calcium or aluminum.
  • Depression.
  • Eating disorders.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Colon cancer.

How Can I Prevent Constipation?

  • Eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of fiber. Fruits, vegetables, and whole-grain bread and cereal (especially bran) are great sources of fiber. Fiber and water help the colon pass stool.
  • Drink 1 1/2 to 2 quarts of water and other fluids a day. Liquids that contain caffeine, such as coffee and soft drinks, seem to have a dehydrating effect and may need to be avoided until your bowel habits return to normal. Some people may need to avoid milk, as dairy products can be constipating for them.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Move your bowels when you feel the urge.

What Should I Do If I am Constipated?

  • Drink two to four extra glasses of water a day. Try drinking warm liquids, especially in the morning.
  • Add fruits and vegetables to your diet.
  • Eat prunes and/or bran cereal.
  • If needed, use a very mild stool softener or laxative. Do not use laxatives for more than two weeks without calling your doctor, as laxative overuse can aggravate your symptoms.

Seek the opinion of your doctor before following of any diet treatment and regiment. Only a doctor can provide you with advice on what is safe and most effective for you.

My Memories Of Phyllis Ray

I have no memory of the year Phyllis Ray came to the Baptist Home or how long she lived there. My first memory of her began in Monticello, Arkansas in Mrs. Belts, seventh grade class. She sat near the teacher’s desk and I sat behind and to her right. Although there were other times and places or activities when I remember her being around such as the time she asked me to go with her but my infatuation began in that early classroom.

Phyllis was a small girl with a slim figure whose head sit atop a long slim neck. Her facial features were thin with a nose that seemed too large for her face. It was not really that big it’s just that she was a small girl. Also she usually wore a pair of faded blue denim pants that fit her rather tight with a sleeveless blouse hanging on the outside. Those times that she wore shoes they were slipped on over her bare feet. I mention that because it was not uncommon for the boys to go barefooted and most likely the girls did too.

As twelve year kids, she and I shared a common music teacher for a year. However Phyllis studied with Mrs. Dean much longer than I She became so accomplished at the piano she once entered a talent contest and won. She sure did, and the finals were held on TV.

When it was announced that she had won, the audience erupted into whistles and yells of “you showed ‘em girl!” Then during a thunderous applause, they requested an encore. Phyllis was not prepared for an encore and had not prepared a second piece. Such a thing had not entered into her mind. Therefore, Phyllis apologized by explaining that she had time to prepare only the one piece of music then played the same piece again.

Phyllis was a young girl about fifteen at the time. She could have played any one of a hundred songs from memory but none to the level of the one that won for her and she didn’t want to disappoint the audience.

The audience again applauded their approval and requested another encore to which Phyllis played the piece for the third time and stepped down.

Now, the part about her asking me to go with her happened much later when we were about sixteen or seventeen. I remember us standing outside between the concrete slab and the fishpond (filled in by this time) when I came up to her. I think she had requested another person to ask me to meet her there. Anyway, she asked me to go with her. When I turned her down for, she asked me why. I don’t remember the reason, only that it happened.

Phyllis Ray was the first girl I really took a liking to while in the Home. She was twelve or thirteen at the time and I’m sure she didn’t realize that there was this crazy boy watching her every move. If she ever reads this story Phyllis will surely kill me or, at the least be shocked that anyone would write such a tale.

She sat in the front row (seventh grade) by the teacher’s desk while I sat just behind and to her right. I could see everything she did. Young Love’ was a big hit back in those days, and she doodled a lot on her paper while the teacher was talking. In the margins of her notebook paper, she wrote famous artists’ names and the popular songs of the day in the margins of her notebook paper and did it in such a neat way. The writing had such smooth curves, at various angles with different fonts, upside down and all over the blank spaces on her paper.

I don’t know what attracted me to her, other than she was a very pretty girl. But, as each day passed as she doodled and I watched, I became more and more attracted to her.

The sugar and spice routine continued for some time until one day she picked her nose. Just like a boy, she found a `booger’ rolled it around between her thumb and middle finger then brushed it off her finger to ultimately let it down to the floor below.

There I sat, dumbfounded. All my life I had thought girls were different and only boys were snails, nails and puppy dog tails.

I recovered from the shock however, and for some time remained her secret boy friend and to this day I make a capital `P’ with a large sweeping curve just like she did back when we were in Mrs. Belts seventh grade class.

Make Money on eBay - Higher Fuel Costs Can Mean Higher Sales!

Often there are marketing opportunities that a seller fails to recognize. If that opportunity is not recognized there is little chance to use that opportunity to the seller’s advantage. Yet had that opportunity been recognized it may have meant that the seller can make money on eBay.

One of those market opportunities has been emerging over the last many months. That opportunity; fuels costs! For some sellers higher fuel costs can be an opportunity to make money on eBay.

Fuel prices continue to creep ever higher and higher. As they continue their incredible climb use the opportunity to grow your sales and to make money on eBay. Here is a chance to save shoppers from having to make that $10.00 or $15.00 trip to purchase the very same or at least similar item as you sell on eBay.

There are a couple of ways to remind prospective buyers of the potential savings. Add a comment to your item listings. You could also consider trying a sub-title on your auction listings. In either case simply add a brief statement about saving money on fuel by buying from you. You could also entice bidders by providing free shipping on items, or if they buy a certain number of items for FREE shipping. (You would need to create a combined invoice for that buyer that includes FREE shipping.) The number of options is really limited only by your imagination. All lead to you having the opportunity to make money on eBay.

Take this opportunity to save your prospective buyers from spending that $10.00 or $15.00 on a trip. Show them how purchasing from you not only saves that money, but that they can get a price that is much lower than the MSPR! Make money on eBay by saving your buyers from high fuel costs.

To your eBay success!

Ivan Parker Hits The Ground Running With New Project, “That Was Then, This Is Now”

Ivan Parker’s latest release, “That Was Then…This Is Now” shows Ivan at his best. The clear vocals, choice of songs and excellent production combine to make this one of the top releases of 2007. The first single from the project, “Hit The Ground Running” aptly describes the music as it is takes off musically where his last project, “Under Grace” left off.

Ivan Parker has released over 30 Southern Gospel projects. From his beginnings with the Singing Americans in 1982, through his Gold City Quartet years, until the present Ivan Parker has been a perennial Southern Gospel music fan favorite. He has been voted the Singing News “Soloist of The Year” in 2006, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, and 2000. He has also won many other awards and has been inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.

The first song on the project, “That Was Then…This Is Now”. is classic Ivan Parker and sets the tone for the project. The song, written by Jimmy Dooley, tells of how Jesus can turn defeat into victory. The joy in Ivan’s voice turns this song into an instant classic.

“Hit The Ground Running”, is a catchy song that will put a skip in your step early in the morning. The first single to radio, it is a wonderful song about reaching Heaven and the joy of being there. It is bound to be a crowd pleaser.

In line with songs like, “Redeemer” and”I Can Only Imagine”, Ivan Parker includes a remake of Ray Boltz’ contemporary classic, “Thank You”. His “Ivanizing” of the song does it justice. The message rings true as does Ivan’s rendition.

In contrast to “Thank You” Ivan includes a “churchy” version of my favorite hymn, “It Is Well”. It may be the only low point on the CD. With that said, it is still quite good.

The last song on the CD is the classic, “Midnight Cry” live from the National Quartet Convention. It just doesn’t get much better than this. This is Ivan, this is Southern Gospel Music, this is excellence.

Ivan Parker is one of Southern Gospel music’s finest talents. “That Was Then..This Is Now” shows that after 25 years it is possible to continue to hone your craft and get better with each passing year. This is a wonderful project, a 9.5 out of 10.

Simple Golf Tip Technique To Slice Strokes From Your Game

I am a big fan of Tim Gallwey’s “The Inner Game Of Golf”. The following golf tip technique is one I stole from his book. I’ve tried it, it worked, and I wanted to pass it along.

Part of what makes golf so complex is undoubtedly the mental part of the game. There is constant battle for that time on the course to get your mind focused, alert, and relaxed. To me, it always seems when I win that battle - if you really can “win” it - then I play better golf. But, as anyone knows that has ever picked up a club, that is easier said than done.

A large part, for me, of enjoying myself on the course (and thus playing better) is letting go when something ‘bad’ has happened. If you allow yourself to ruminate over a poor shot, that has a domino effect that can destroy your round. Tension takes hold of your game, and there isn’t a thing that seems to go right afterwards. Been there?

Here is a very simple golf tip technique by Gallwey that I used for some great results. It doesn’t take a lot of time or effort, but stabilizes your focus while playing golf.

The golf tip technique is to simply associate or remember a simple task while having a ‘difficult’ task in front of you.

For instance, when you have a 15 foot putt staring you in the face, instead of thinking, “Oh God, I never make these damn things”, associate the shot with a simple task in your mind.

That simple task should be something you can do without a chance of failure. An example would be pulling the putter from the golf bag. By vibrantly associating the supposed ‘difficult’ putt with the simple task of pulling the putter from the bag, you’ve taken away the association of the dreaded act of ‘failure’ that is currently in place.

Just make certain that the task you associate with the ‘difficult’ one is something you cannot possibly fail. Gallwey’s suggested the simple act of picking the golf ball up from the hole, but you can make it anything easy and simple that you wish.

This golf tip technique takes away the tension that seems to mount when things begin to go bad on the golf course. It actually give you a fresh start with each ‘difficult’ circumstance that confronts while playing a round of golf.

And, I don’t know about you, but I’m all about those fresh starts. I can use a lot of them.

Stan Thomas has been playing golf since before dirt covered the earth. He knows he’ll never master the game, but he can’t deny the quest.

So You Want To Be A Pharmacist… First Step- PASS THE PCAT

Now that you’ve graduated college, you’ve decided to take the PCAT (Pharmacy College Admission Test) and become a pharmacist. What do you need to do to prepare? Where do you take the PCAT? Can the PCAT be taken online? All are questions that need to be answered before taking the next step. And while you are waiting for your test date, remember…PRACTICE!

But first, let’s take a better look at what you’re getting yourself into.

What Is The PCAT?

The PCAT, like the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test), the LSAT (Law School Admission Test) and the DAT (Dental Admission Test), is a standardized test that prospective pharmacists are required to take before entering pharmacy college. The PCAT is given just three times a year at various colleges across the United States. The test includes five different categories including Verbal Ability, Quantitative Ability, Biology, Chemistry and Reading Comprehension. Before going any further, let’s take a look at the different types of PCAT questions you will likely be hit with during the test:

Verbal Ability – This section measures the prospective pharmacist’s general, non-scientific word knowledge. It tests these things using analogies and antonyms (opposites). Time for this section: 35 minutes to answer 58 questions.

Quantitative Ability – This is a fancy way of saying the student will be tested on math, including: fractions, percentages, decimals, algebra, pre-calculus, geometry and probability and statistics. Time for this section: 50 minutes to answer 58 questions.

PCAT Biology – The student will be tested on general biology concepts including: general biology, microbiology and anatomy and physiology. Time for this section: 35 minutes to answer 58 questions.

PCAT Chemistry – the PCAT organic chemistry section tests the student on both general chemistry and organic chemistry. Time for this section: 35 minutes to answer 58 questions.

Reading Comprehension – Measures the student’s ability to interpret and understand relevant reading passages and scientific concepts. Time for this section: 50 minutes to answer 45 questions.

There is also a short writing topic (the ever-popular essay question). The prospective pharmacist is given 30 minutes to complete this section.

How to Make Money Selling on eBay - Are Sales Going Down?

If you are among the many who are just starting to learn how to make money selling on eBay then you probably have not run into the problem of having a sales decrease yet. However at one time or another most sellers do run into this problem. There will likely be little warning when it happens. All of sudden you will begin to see the sales of your key product decrease.

As with all businesses you can expect some sales fluctuation on eBay. But how do you handle sales declines that just don’t return to previous levels? You want to know how to make money selling on eBay, yet no matter how hard you try sales just stay lower. When this happens it is time to conduct research.

It is time to really examine the product that you are selling. Possibly that product has just run the product life cycle. If that is true both sales prices and sales totals will continue to decline. It may be a slow decline, but if you want to know how to make money selling on eBay begin to look for other options. It is time to examine other possible products to add to your sales portfolio.

It is important to also examine the eBay marketplace. Has a new seller entered the arena? Are offers to sell being made at much lower prices than your own? Are there other changes in the marketplace? If you know how to make money selling on eBay you know that you will need to respond to these new market conditions.

Was there previously a market influence that drove your sales? Was there a shortage of the product that has now been solved for example? Were there major manufacturer advertising campaigns in process?

If the marketplace hasn’t changed, it may be worth continuing to sell your previous flagship product even if there is a decline in sales totals or prices. However, if the product is on the declining side of the product life cycle sales will likely never return to previous levels. You will need a new product as your flagship product if you are looking to grow your business. Understanding the need to identify a new flagship product is one of the keys regarding how to make money selling on eBay for the long term.

If your eBay sales decline for an extended period of time it is important to really examine the potential causes. To make money selling on eBay requires that sales growth must continue. Identify the problem and then respond appropriately.

TENSION 101

The Basics

Imagine a car that’s idling too fast. It’s revved up and working hard but nothing useful is happening. The motor’s burning more fuel, creating more pollution and experiencing added wear and tear.

Well, it’s kind of the same with muscle tension. It doesn’t help you move and it certainly doesn’t make your muscles stronger. So really your muscles are working hard but not doing anything useful or accomplishing anything.

In fact, muscle tension causes a lot of wear and tear on your body. It strains tendons (which hold your muscles to your bones). It pulls joints tighter together (leading to grinding/crunching sounds and worn out cartilage). It limits your movement, interferes with your co-ordination and may even make you more accident-prone.

Tension also burns up the fuel in your muscles (which makes you feel tired) and creates toxic waste products called “metabolites” (the equivalent of car exhaust) which fatigue your muscles and make them feel sore and achy.

Why Control Tension

• You’ll feel more comfortable.
• You’ll prevent problems from occurring (like kinks in your neck).
• You just know from experience that tension isn’t good.

2 Causes Of Tension

1. Stress is one of the major sources of muscle tension. When under stress, you become like a turtle trying to pull its head into its shell. So your shoulder muscles might simply tighten up or they might round forward and lift up as your head pulls back. And if your stress level is high, you may actually notice your shoulders around your ears.

2. Just sitting or staying still for periods of time causes your muscles to tighten up. By remaining “static”, you’re basically training your muscles to lock your back or neck in a certain posture. Then when you begin to move, your muscles remain tense in an effort to maintain your position. Plus it takes some time for your muscles to realize that they can let go and relax. So the longer you sit without moving, the more you train your muscles to lock into position and the longer it takes to release them.

Key Tension Areas

Simply based on the way tension is created, the areas most vulnerable to tension are your neck, shoulders and back. Although tension can develop in any muscle in your body, these are the areas that are most commonly affected.

Tenderness And Tension

One of the best indicators of tension is tenderness, which is the discomfort you feel when you press on a muscle.

Blood vessels normally deliver oxygen and nutrients to a muscle and flush away waste products. But, when your muscles are tense, they’re essentially squeezing their own blood vessels.

So now, the muscles are working hard and creating lots of waste that’s not being washed out of the muscle. And as these “metabolites” (i.e. waste) begin to accumulate, they start to irritate pain nerves.

If the tension is significant, you’ll actually start to feel achy. If the tension is less severe, the nerves become sensitive and any added stimulus, like a squeeze to the muscle, can cause discomfort.

1 Easy Way To Relieve Tension

Massage can play an important role in helping you deal with your tension and your massage professional, like a mechanic, can adjust how fast your “muscle motors” are idling.

Basically, massage does two things:

First, it helps induce a relaxation response. This reduces the common defensive reactions in your body, including that “turtle-in-the-shell” action of your neck muscles. Relaxation also causes your brain and nervous system to slow down, which in turn lowers the tension level of all the muscles in your body.

Second, massage pulls and stretches, which physically releases the muscle. In addition, the sensations that your muscles feel, both conscious and subconscious, give your brain information about the level of tension that exists in your muscles. This helps your nervous system adjust your muscles to a normal level of tone.

Remember too that the effect of a massage on tension is almost instantaneous. You feel the tension leaving your body immediately. You don’t have to wait days or weeks to see results.

Also, regular massage both reduces your tension and trains your muscles to maintain a lower level of tension.

And when your muscles are healthy and relaxed, they won’t be tender and you won’t feel any discomfort, even when you’re receiving a massage.

1 Easy Way To Prevent Tension

One of the areas most likely to get tense is the shoulders.

(In the nearly 8 years that I’ve been doing chair massage, the shoulders are still the Number 1 area people ask to have massaged because they’re experiencing tension there.)

The muscle that makes up the shoulders is called the trapezius, often referred to as the “traps”. It’s an easy name to remember because this is the muscle that “traps” a lot of tension.

The good news is you can help prevent tension from building up in this muscle.

If you’re sitting or standing still for any significant period of time, be sure to move this muscle through a full range of motion, at least once in a while.

Something you can try is the “20/20 Rule”:

For every 20 minutes that you are inactive, spend 20 seconds moving.

This helps ensure that your muscles don’t have the chance to lock into any particular position.

Use the two simple exercises in this article to bring your “traps” through a full range of motion and keep your muscles relaxed and tension-free.
