Some people are afraid to use stainless steel cookware, afraid that the lack of Teflon coating will make food cooked in them stick. I bought my first stainless steel pan set from HSN shopping network, and decided to try them out for myself. These pans are a dream, and clean up beautifully. My experience with these beautiful pans has been nothing but positive, and I’ve put them through their paces. The 20-piece aluminum pan set I bought is by Wolfgang Puck, a well-known chef, who definitely knows good pans when he sees them. Here are some of the highlights of this lovely set.

My set included a 1-quart saucepan, a 2-quart saucepan, an omelet pan, an 8-quart stock pot, a sautepan, and a large wok. All are heavy, and very well-constructed. Also included were glass lids for all pots and pans, as well as some lovely stainless cooking utensils such as spoons, turners, a fork, tongs, a skimmer and even an adjustable measuring spoon. The elegant mirror finish on all pieces makes all of them worth displaying. My kitchen looks much classier with these pans in use.

Most importantly, these pans cook evenly and quickly. I have gas burners, and use the pans on medium heat for best results. I followed the included instructions, which tell the user to first preheat the pan, then add the oil or butter to the hot pan. Then, add whatever you are cooking. It worked like a charm, and nothing has stuck. To clean the pans, while they are still hot, I pour water in them and then take a cloth, to wipe out any leftover mess, or run the hot pan under the faucet, to remove the food. It works wonderfully, and quickly.

Before buying this set, I was a slave to the cheap Teflon-coated pans. But, the coating didn’t cook as evenly as I’d liked, and scratched. Plus, there are studies out nowadays about these kinds of coated pans allegedly being bad for health due to chemicals given off while cooking. I have one iron pan that is nice but a whole set of them is way too expensive for my middle-class budget. This set of cookware was reasonably priced and, watching them being used on HSN, I could tell that they were of high quality. In person, they are even more impressive, along with the cooking utensils, which are also heavy and well-made. I’m giving away my cheap, plastic spatulas, spoons and fork to someone else now that this set happily meets all my cooking needs. They show no wear at all with multiple uses, and the food cooked in them didn’t burn or singe at all. I couldn’t say that with the old coated pans.

If you want a quality set of cookware, Wolfgang Puck’s line of stainless steel pots, pans and utensils won’t steer you wrong. They are worth every penny paid, and more. A professional cook wouldn’t put his name and reputation at stake by endorsing lousy pans. Try them and see how easy they are to use and clean. You won’t be disappointed.

It was 1994. I had just gone through a divorce after several painful and tumultuous years that had resulted in my becoming distanced from my children…or them from me.

I had met and married a lady with two children…twin teenage daughters. She, and they, had been through their own trying period as mommy and daddy’s marriage fell apart, and their father dealt them all blow after painful blow.

My new wife and I had agreed that I was not to even try to raise her children. She saw that as an unfair task to place on me considering my experiences, their experiences, and their ages…they were thirteen. We did agree that I was the adult male in the house and, with her, was a co-head of the house and would act as father in all such events.

That’s how we got Diamond.

We had just moved into our first real home together after a few months in a small apartment. We found a house for rent just around the corner from the girls’ grandmother. It was great because they had visited there many times, and had even lived with her for a while, so they had grown up with many of the kids in the neighborhood and knew many of the families.

One of the families had a dog, and this dog had a litter of puppies. As my wife puts it, they were part Australian Shepherd and part fence-jumper. Some would say “Heinz 57″.

I am sure that you have guessed what happened next! In marched the two of them carrying this little black bundle of fur. They went straight to their mom and asked the inevitable question, followed up by the inevitable selling point, “Can we keep her? They said we could have her. We’ll take care of her. You won’t have to do anything.”

Shhh. I have to be careful how I handle this. Diamond’s laying on the floor outside my office door looking at me.

My wife did what I guess was the right thing. She knew that the girls had still not accepted me completely, and not as someone who had a say-so over what they could do. She also knew what the eventual outcome of this was going to be, and she knew that I had a right to be involved. She told the girls, “I’m not sure about this. You’ll have to ask Don.”

The girls really wanted that dog, and they were ready to deal with the devil to get it, so they turned to me and gave me the same pitch. I knew that while this might not be a “make or break” situation in our relationship, what I did in the next few minutes was going to color the next few years in some way. This was the first real family decision that hinged on the girls’ wants and needs, and I didn’t want to blow it.

I was also falling for the puppy and could see my wife, who refused to admit to such emotions over animals, getting a “what a cute little thing” look on her face.

To stall for a minute, I asked what her name was. “She doesn’t have one yet,” they replied. As I looked her over and petted her a little, I noticed a small star of white among the coal black fur on the back of her neck. “That looks like a diamond”, I said, and then I knew what to say next.

“Let’s call her Diamond.”

It took a second for that to seep in, but then they realized what that meant. She was going to be ours and she had a name.

She’s got a little bit of arthritis now, but she is still the champion beggar of central Texas. She is the only dog I have ever known who taught herself to play dead so that she could be “revived” with treats. We have to spell in front of her, and my wife complains because the words are getting longer and she’s having trouble catching them. The girls long ago taught Diamond to carry messages and small objects back and forth between family members. Although as she aged, she quit putting her toys away on command, she learned that she could barter for treats by picking up dropped objects such as the pieces of paper I tend to let fall around my desk. We had to stop her the day she tried to bring us the remote, however.

She is somewhat psychic and knows when we are about to go somewhere and might just take her along. When she realizes she is being left behind, she retreats to her “pouting spot” on the couch. If we are gone too long, she complains under her breath when we get back, and there is no way she can be enticed to go outside if she believes we might be bringing in people food.

She protects us diligently from all intruders including passing cars or helicopters that are a bit too loud, or kids playing a half a block away. She bravely and boldly attempts to terrify all visitors until they reach down to pet her, and the puppy of several years ago reappears, and they are friends for life…until the next time they come to the door.

The girls who were “going to take care of her”?

Oh, they live about 160 miles away. One is a new mother and has two cats and two dogs of her own, and her sister has two dogs. She recently got rid of her killer attack cat, but that’s another story. They still love Diamond, and fuss over her when we come to visit and baby-sit her when we have to travel, but somehow she has become our dog…my wife’s and mine.

I don’t regret that. I am sure that everything would have turned out all right, but I think it all started to get a little easier for us to become a family the day we added Diamond to it.

You know what? She just got up and went into the bedroom. I bet she’s going to tell my wife I’ve been ignoring her. She’s long ago learned the fine art of going to Mommy if Daddy can’t be swayed.

Starting with personal experience, I can tell you that I have had golf lessons and golf instruction from the worst of them to world class instructors. World class means they charged the most.

I have spent large amount of monies in search of the SECRET to the golf swing. I have paid for videos, instruction manuals, e books, playing lessons, gadget of colors, sizes, and purposes.

Every single thing that I have experienced had some useful tidbit buried in all the BS. It took years for me to figure it out.

The one thing that all of this had in common was:

Not one taught the same thing!!!!

There is generally no agreement in the Golf Instruction community about what actually takes place in the golf swing.

The reason for this is that most just plain don’t know. I could make a list a mile long that would include all the golf instruction that is just flat out wrong.

How about a couple of examples just for fun.

Has anyone ever told you to just relax? What sporting activity have you ever seen where the participants are ” just relaxing”… boxing? Football? Baseball? Basketball? Bowling? Come one. It is an athletic event. You don’t relax when you are trying to smash the cover off the ball. You are at a heightened level of power and speed.

It is no place for a nap. Relax. What a bunch of crap.

Have you ever seen the face of PGA players at the point of impact on the tee shot?

Trust me when I tell you there is absolutely no relaxation in their expressions.

Or take a light grip. I love that one. It’s the brother to ” just relax”

I know, some of you are thinking, jeez this guy is full of it. Everyone knows that you have to take a light grip. Nope… no one that plays at a high level does this. No one.

It it true that yo shouldn’t try and squeeze water out of the grip, but you do not hold it lightly either.

Ever wonder why you wear out the palm pad of your golf glove? It’s because you are gripping it wrong and light. Which means you have to Re-grip somewhere in the downswing the proper amount so you won’t loose the club.

Oh yeah … then there is the ” keep your head still” thing. This has created more poor weight shifts or reverse weight shift than you will ever imagine.

You have to move your head. Many actually move it back away from the target, but you have to move your head.

What you don’t do is move it past the ball. If you move past the ball you will most assuredly hit from the top.

Keeping your head behind the ball allows you to “rock your shoulders” so that you stay on plane and have the correct path. More on this move in the next segment of this article.

How about this one. The first move you make on the downswing is to turn your hips out of the way.

I must tell you that if you have no weight shift this could be the culprit.

Not one good player in the history of the game did this. It is so stupid that I may not even explain what the correct first move is, if you don’t already know.

There are tons of other golf instruction swing busters. Golf lessons provide some decent instruction, but you have to already know the basics before you will benefit much, unless you are lucky and know someone who really, really knows his/her stuff.

Most PGA professionals try very hard to get it right. But it seems that they all go to the same school. And then once they are on the practice tee they sort of make it up to fit the student.

I know I shouldn’t put them all in the same boat. So I won’t. Just the ones I have had experience with and the ones that my friends and family have had experience with and all the people I have ever played golf with have had experience with and so on fall into that boat.

Want proof?

Not one single person that I have ever talked to or played golf with has ever seen more than a stroke or two improvement as a result of golf instruction or golf lessons from any PGA instruction.

And most that did improve, found out later, that it was just a short term fix and soon their mistakes were back.

When first learning to saddle a horse, you should know that there is no difference between using a western saddle or an English saddle. They require the same knowledge and steps.

Before Saddling Your Horse

Before you place a saddle on your horse, you should always groom the horse. Take the time to check and make sure there are no sores in the area the saddle will be placed. Then brush your horse to make sure that anything like grit or dirt is removed so you can prevent irritation or chaffing. When you are finished brushing, the hair on the horse’s back or girth should lie flat.

Saddling Your Horse

When you begin to saddle a horse, it is traditionally done from the left side. Although, if it is necessary, you can also do it from the right side of the horse. Now you are ready to place the blanket on the horse. If you are using a western saddle, first fold the blanket in half. Then place the blanket over the horse with the fold towards the horse’s head. Some blankets may have rings on them so you can attach it to the saddle and help keep it from moving around. If that is the case, make sure they are up and not against the horse.

Now check to make sure that the blanket is folded evenly. A tip to help make sure that the hair on the horse’s back stays flat is when you are placing the blanket over the horse start at the withers and slide it down the back into place.

Now you are ready to put the actual saddle on the horse. Before you place it on the horse, make sure you have properly hooked the stirrups so they will not smack the horse as you set the saddle down. Then lift the saddle high enough that you can set it down with out moving the blanket. Set it down easy; if you just drop it on the horse you may spook it. When you place it, try to place it a little higher up the back and let it “settle” in where it belongs.

Walk around to the other side and unattached the stirrup. Check to make sure that the blanket stayed in place, smooth out any wrinkles and make sure the hair remained flat. Double-checking is very important when you saddle a horse.
