Dolphins and sea lions are usually seen either in the wilderness, an aquarium, a zoo or even a shopping mall such as the West Edmonton Mall in Canada. They are very popular as entertainers or for the ecotourism industry. But did you know that they are also amongst or best allies to ensure your safety against terrorism?

Well, the U.S. Navy has been using their abilities to swim and see in murky waters easily as a defence strategy. You see, the San Diego Naval base has been training dolphins and sea lions in several occasions to ensure the safety of either their soldiers or Americans.

Both marine mammals are able to see mines and swimmers in murky waters, which allow them to drop a light near mines. This way, mines can be avoided or even safely removed by the U.S. Navy. A good example of this was when they were used in 2003 in the Iraqi harbor of Umm Qasr when they located underwater mines. The soldiers were able to use a safe path shown by the dolphins to reach the land without problems.

During the Vietnam War, dolphins were used to protect a pier. Dolphins and sea lions have been used since the late 1950’s. During the Cold War, they had as many as 140 marine mammals at their service.

In 1996, they were used to patrol the San Diego during the Republican National Convention as swimmers were a threat as they may try to plant bombs. During their patrolling, both sea lions and dolphins carry a light in their mouth and drop it near a mine but sea lions also carry a handcuff-like device that can be hooked on a swimmer a.k.a. terrorist and is linked to a cable that allows soldiers to real the culprit in.

In the 1990’s the program was gradually used less as the U.S. Navy expected the technology to take over. Realizing that technology has not been able to fill the responsibilities met by dolphins and sea lions, the program is not expected to be dropped until 2012.

Animal right activists are concerned that the cold water of certain regions may be affecting dolphins in the form of diseases, which could also be transmitted to the local pods of killer whales. The military veterinarian, who is responsible for the marine mammals health has confirmed that dolphins’ health is closely monitored in order to avoid such problems.

The training program for dolphins and sea lions used in this Defence strategy is based at Naval Base Point Loma in the San Diego Harbor where 75 dolphins and 25 sea lions are currently being trained.

The San Diego Naval Base briefly opened its doors on April 12, 2007; following the announcement of their plan to send 30 dolphins to patrol the waters of Washington State’s Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, which is also home nuclear submarines, ships and laboratories.

As you can see, marine mammals such as dolphins, are not only natural curious and friendly towards humans, they can range from entertaining us in both natural and man-made environments as well as protects lives. I had a meeting at one of the newer hotel restaurants in my area. It’s a nice 4 star hotel - very well designed and decorated. If I were traveling I wouldn’t hesitate to stay there.

Approaching the hotel, it’s easy to see they spent a lot of money. And it’s an impressive place. As I entered the front door to the restaurant, I noticed a sign on the wall to the left of the door:

“Smoking is prohibited in the hotel or on the grounds.”

I looked around for an ashtray near the entrance and I saw none. “Very good” I thought to myself. Too many businesses claim to prohibit smoking but then they offer an ashtray near the front door which invites people to stand there and smoke.

But then, I noticed something that knocked the wind out their image. On the curb, not 20 feet from the restaurant door was a guy sitting on the curb smoking. A closer look revealed he was not a hotel guest. In fact, he was the driver of the hotel’s shuttle bus.

He was an employee of the hotel!

In situations like these I immediately put myself in the shoes of the owner or general manager of the place. I think to myself about how much money they spent trying to create a clean, welcoming and aesthetically pleasing business. From the decor, to the employees to the policies, clearly they want to create a certain image for their business and a certain experience for their customers.

A strong, comprehensive non-smoking policy is an important part of creating the image and the customer experience they want to create.

Then one unthinking employee trashes the whole image and experience by sitting on the curb smoking his heater.

Of course, the hotel is still a nice place. And the restaurant still serves good food. And maybe this was the only time this ever happened.

But I doubt it.

When I see this I ask myself, “in what other ways is this business falling down on the job?” How else are they not maintaining the apparent standard they set with the impressive decor and design (and prices!)?

We choose one company over another because we trust them. We trust they can help us get what we want from the transaction or relationship. We trust they can deliver what they promise, even if the promise is implicit.

But contradictions like this can reduce the trust we have with a business.

When we see a disparity, like the employee smoking in front of the “no smoking” sign, it’s easy (and reasonable) for us to wonder how serious this company is in meeting their obligations to us. Or are they more interested in putting on a good show?

In Texas they call that “all hat and no cattle”.

I call it bad business.

My wife thinks I’m strange. I won’t go into all the reasons for this, but one of them is that I’m constantly looking up words in the dictionary and thesaurus. The other day I looked up the word “slogan”. What I found fascinated me.

We all know what a slogan is. Too often it’s a bland and meaningless piece of self-serving verbiage we see on signs, letterhead, business cards, billboard and everywhere else companies paint their marketing messages. In my experience, most slogans are worthless as a way to deliver a useful marketing message. Because they usually say nothing.

Or worse, they often give a meaning the author didn’t intend but the reader finds funny, in an unflattering way.

For example, I live in Minnesota. Our nice neighbor to the south is Iowa. For a while, their big “welcome to our state” signs had a happy smiley face picture and this text:

“Iowa. You make me smile.”

Okay, this seems fine. Until people start tweaking it so it reads:

“Iowa. You make me laugh.”

(I think a Minnesotan came up with that.)

It’s no surprise to most of us that lame and misguided slogans abound. But what I found in the dictionary got my attention. Here’s how it describes the word “slogan”:

Now that’s more like it! There’s a great example of the power words can have. Just imagine a slogan so clear and strong that it can motivate, focus and energize a band of warriors going into battle. Back then, slogans saved lives, even entire villages!

What would those fierce Scottish warriors think of today’s weak and wimpy slogans? “Castrol makes it work better” doesn’t quite have the impact I’d want as I launched into battle against my sworn enemies.

Maybe I’m taking this personally because those Scottish warriors could have been my ancestors. (I have Logan blood in my veins.)

Or, maybe we should all take our slogans as seriously as my Scottish forebears did. Maybe we should view them in the same light, as something to rally around. If we did, I’ll bet we’d have a lot more powerful and memorable slogans all around us. Companies would have one more useful weapon in their marketing arsenals.

As you think of how to promote your company or brand, remember the Scottish warriors. Craft your slogan with the same care and purpose, as if it were to lead you into battle. Make it work for you rather than against you. Make it worthwhile. Make it so powerful people can’t help but remember it.

That’s what a slogan should be!
