VoIP Service - 9 Facts You Need To Know

VoIP Service is one of the hottest technologies on the internet today. And, unlike so many other internet services, VoIP service - in place of a standard telephone service - actually provides real value to the user.

So what exactly is Voice over IP (VoIP)?

Voice over Internet Protocol. Simply the ability to transmit Voice traffic (an analog conversation) over the internet (a packet based protocol or data conduit). This is done much the way music is digitized when converted to MP3.

You have probably heard of Voice over IP or VoIP before, and maybe even used it, but check your knowledge against this list of 9 need to know facts:

  • VoIP is an exciting new technology, but it’s not yet perfected
  • Skype, and now Google Talk, are the easiest ways to get started
  • Some VoIP Service companies that are here today will be gone tomorrow
  • A VoIP phone is only as reliable as your broadband internet connection
  • You don’t want to rely on a VoIP phone line for 911!
  • VoIP phone service does not carry the same legal protections as a landline
  • Low introductory prices for VoIP service will likely increase later, maybe a lot
  • Long distance is getting cheaper all the time, removing some incentive for VoIP
  • VoIP is the future, and merits looking into

VoIP is exciting, but not perfect

We all love something for nothing, but have you ever heard the phrase “There’s no such thing as a free lunch?” Sure you have. With Voice over IP, keep in mind that it is a relatively new and developing technology, and the “price” can be lack of quality.

The internet is designed to pass data packets. The ability to resend packets that are lost in transmission is built in to the way the internet works. This works great with data packets - keep resending until the recipient gets it or a predetermined timeout factor.

If a packet is lost with voice, however, how does the person speaking know to stop talking until the packet arrives at the other end? Getting the picture? Think early days of cell phones (depending on where you’re at you might be thinking of cell phones today!).

Anyone who has used VoIP, and you probably have been on the receiving end of a VoIP call whether you knew it or not, knows that drop outs and dropped calls do happen. Many businesses are beginning to use VoIP to save money on long distance. Next time you receive a call from a business and the line quality “waffles” a bit, you are probably on a VoIP call.

Skype (or Google Talk) is a must for anyone interested in VoIP

You simply MUST checkout this technology. It primarily turns your computer, with a microphone and speakers (preferably a headset), into a telephone. When you login to Skype, Skype servers can then connect others to you automatically when they “dial” your username.

You can call any other Skype user, who is online, for free. With inexpensive minute packages, you can call any phone number in the world.

WIFI enabled cell phones even have the ability to make skype phone calls right from the phone’s menu. This saves paid minutes for other calls and allows international calling to be free.

I know several businesses with employees scattered around the world who keep everyone in touch via free skype calls.

What VoIP companies will be around for the long haul?

Not all VoIP companies are like Vonage, and Vonage is… well, have you noticed that the Vonage stock IPO (initial public offering) was less than well received, with the price of the stock quickly falling 50% and more?

Vonage is probably the best known VoIP company, and if you prowl the internet chat rooms and newsgroups you will see an awful lot of complaints about dropped calls and other quality and service issues. The company may ultimately get the kinks worked out and improve their reputation, but only time will tell.

Many other VoIP companies may not last very long. Don’t you kind of wonder about a business that pays up to $200 for a residential VoIP Service referral, as long as the referral stays a $20/month customer for at least two months? I know of one such company. Scary.

Not a big deal if you are just playing around with VoIP on a second phone line and trying to save a little on long distance. But what happens to number portability when the company that has your number no longer answers their phone?

Reliability of the Internet

With Voice over IP, don’t forget what IP stands for - Internet Protocol. Is your internet service ever down, or sloooow? Guess what that does to your VoIP service; that’s right, what service!

Even if you have the most reliable ISP or Internet Service Provider, the VoIP call needs to get to the other end after being properly routed everywhere in between. If any part of the path fails and cannot quickly redirect, your call is either dropped or nonexistent in the first place.

In order for VoIP service to work well, the entire network must support something known as QoS, which stands for Quality of Service. Problem is, not every path on the internet supports QoS, at least not yet.

Just like a chain, a Voice over IP phone call is only as good as its weakest link.

And that leads right into the next point..

Do NOT rely on a VoIP phone line for 911

Now I know there are those of you who are young, single and carefree who maybe have never had to call 911 in your life and don’t expect to have to.

But it’s not just seniors and families with children who have medical emergencies, whether it be for someone who lives in that residence or a visitor.

What about fire? What if you have to call the Police?

  • Do you ever want to pick up the phone to dial 911 and not get an immediate dial tone?
  • Do you ever want to have to redial because the call was dropped?
  • Do you ever want to get routed to the wrong 911 dispatcher? Or have the dispatcher not get your correct address on their screen?

Emergency 911 service is yet to be available with many Voice over IP services in most areas of the United States. Some providers in fact will only let you make OUTBOUND calls from your home because of this (they want you to keep a land line for now).

For those where it does work it depends on the correct data being entered in their master database somewhere and for the routing algorithms to work correctly for your call to get to the correct 911 emergency call center.

Traditional landlines have a variety of legal protections, but not VoIP phone service

With the current attitude of the US Government to keep chipping away at the Consitution in the name of anti-terrorism, I don’t expect that many, if any, legal protections will be extended to VoIP. Certainly none that will protect you from Uncle Sam that’s for sure. And YES, VoIP calls can be traced, even over encrypted connections!

Don’t be sucked in by low introductory rates

We all know how it works. 3, 6, 12 months at a low price, then huge increase once they’ve got you hooked. Companies like Vonage started out with rates around $50/month. Now they offer intro rates of $20 - $30/month.

You know where they want to go with those rates. Up. The higher the better for them. Quite possibly back toward $50/month.

The only thing that will prevent that from happening is competition. But in order for competition to keep prices down, the customer, that’s you, have to be willing to endure the inconvenience of jumping ship. That’s a task certain to be more painful if you try to take your phone number with you.

Can you count on the VoIP service provider to make it easy for you to switch to one of their competitors? Can you spell “Busy Signal”? Sure you can. You’ve been there before. It’s not like being able to walk in the office of your local phone company where you can speak to someone in person!.

And for $20 - $50/month, you can buy a lot of long distance these days; which leads me to the next item..

Long distance just keeps getting cheaper

If your primary reason for giving up the quality and reliability of a land line is to get free long distance, your reason is getting smaller every day.

Why? Long distance rates are coming down. Between competition and the fact that telecommunications companies are themselves using Voice over IP to route long distance traffic. The difference, though, is that telecoms use dedicated networks with high dollar equipment to eliminate the dropped calls and to keep the quality of the call in line with what their customers expect.

Many traditional phone customers are being offered unlimited calling packages now. And who doesn’t have some spare minutes on their cell phone package to use for a long distance call now and then? The attractiveness of free calling via a VoIP service is diminishing daily.

Conclusion: The future of VoIP

Bottom line? Voice over IP is here to stay. It is the future. For those who feel like being a pioneer, new technology can be fun. Just remember what can happen to pioneers, they get arrows in their back!

If you fancy the latest in technology, take Voice over IP for a test drive, I am.

But when I have a really important call, or I don’t want to make a bad impression or I’m calling someone older who doesn’t hear so well any more - I pick up a land line, dial 1+ the number and show some respect for the person on the other end of the line.

How to Overload the Conscious Mind for Better Hypnosis

It is a fact that on average the conscious mind can concentrate, and keep straight 5-9 items at one time. Five things are generally pretty easy for a person to remember and nine is beginning to become quite difficult. As you can see this is not a great number when you put it into the amount of items, facts or ideas you can rattle off in a conversation.

This is why when you are having a conversation with a person about their car being in the shop and they start to give you a bunch of different facts about the car they drive, the car their parents drive, the car Uncle Tom drives and the car Aunt Hilda drives you may get confused.

You will so busy trying to keep the different cars, the people who drive them and the facts about them straight that you will miss the point of the conversation in the first place. Your speaker was talking about his car being in the shop.

Overloading the mind with any information will cause the critical factor to either get distracted with unimportant information or shut down all together. This is a plus for you as a hypnotist because then you can attach a suggestion and it will flow right on in.

If a person is able to keep track of the information they will more than likely be focusing on the wrong information which will still distract the critical factor and again allow your suggestion in anyway.

The idea behind overloading people with details is just that. No matter what the subject or how it is being presented, whether it be fact, fiction or just random information, you want to really give them a lot of details to use this powerful concept to its full advantage.

The next language trick or confusion pattern you will use to overload the mind is called the spontaneous change of meaning. This is done by the sudden and unexpected combining of two different statements. When you take two statements that end and begin with the same word you can mush them together to make one sentence that just doesn’t quiet add up.

For example, “I’m going to the store is out of milk.” In this statement the meaning at the beginning and end are fine, they make sense. But somewhere in the middle things get a little confusing, just confusing enough that you have to stop and think about what I have just said.

If you take the statement apart you see that ‘I’m going to the store’ is quite average and normal; as is ‘The store is out of milk.’ This sudden change in how people are used to hearing things causes critical factor to stop for the confusion. When that happens you can simply add your suggestion to the flow of conversation and it will again go in unnoticed.

Another way to incorporate spontaneous change of meaning into your Conversational Hypnosis is to introduce a suggestion in your conversation and then continue speaking as if it never happened. This again causes enough confusion for critical factor that it wants to stop to figure it out.

This is overridden by the fact that you are still talking and there is no time to go back to figure it out. Now the unconscious does pick up the suggestion and stores it away for future use. Again your suggestion gets in to the mind as it bypasses the confused critical factor.

As you include more and more of these spontaneous changes the mind will not only pick up the conversation you are having aloud it will begin to recognize the pattern being created within through the hidden messages.

Yet another way to use this change of meaning is to avoid the ambiguity all together and just combine two statements that end and begin with the same word together. These statements will make more sense and be a little less confusing but still distracting. The key here is to make sure to add these statements casually into conversation otherwise they will be noticed and detected.

Also remember to use these when you need to, not for every other statement. If you use this spontaneous change of meaning too often it can become annoying and overbearing, which is true for most confusion language tactics. Becoming too confusing can be counterproductive in that your listeners will no longer have an interest in listening to you.

Lastly we come to the language confusion concept of shock and surprise. This is a fascinating concept, any time you really shock or surprise someone you will automatically run over the critical factor and make it in. Shock and surprise will create their own type of trance induction.

Just by being shocked and surprised your conscious thinking will immediately overload and shut down leaving only the unconscious open to suggestion and ready to follow instruction, which is perfect for a hypnotist.

There is a caution in shock and surprise method. Some people do not like to be shocked and surprised so be sure you are picking and choosing wise times and the right people to use this technique on.

The Transformers Movie

What’s cool about the advancement of technology is that there are certain pieces that were simply made for advanced pieces of technology, but were created too soon. A prime example would be “Dark Side of the Moon” by Pink Floyd. The sonic landscapes and incredible details of the album were simply born to be enjoyed on the crisp, clean sound that a CD player could only provide. Even though “Dark Side” was released in 1974, its full appreciation couldn’t be discovered until the advent of the CD some 15 years later. Now, “Dark Side of the Moon” is the first CD you purchase when you grow out of your little crappy radio to a full-fledged adult, amazing kick-ass stereo system.

Which brings us to film; special effects have always been an integral part of creating worlds that moviegoers could believe in. From the colorization of Oz to Moses parting to Red Sea to being chased by the Death Star, special effects are just as important as the lead actor in some films. And while we’ve always been amazed at what was created for its time, it would be interesting to see what could be done then with the technology of today.

If there is one movie that’s destined for today’s technological and special effects advances, it comes out in July of 2007: the Transformers. For years, fans and enthusiasts would imagine what a real life Transformer would look like. How would the classic cartoon incarnation of Optimus Prime, Megatron and the other Autobots and Decepticons translate to a live action, big screen adventure? Well, this year, that question will be answered.

Forget about story or character or plot development for a second, and simply focus on big giant robots beating each other up. And then, in an instant, those big giant robots will transform into a truck or a plane and rip through the city at an incredible pace. In the early days of film, the concept would probably be impossible to place on the screen and do it justice. In the golden age of film, it would look interesting, but laughable. In the special effects era of movies, it would look passable, but not believable. But now, in 2007, with all the possibilities and abilities which special effects wizards have at their disposal, the Transformers, should, at the very least, look realistic.

A common source of debate for the upcoming Transformers movie is how the characters should look. The classic cartoon appearance, while iconic and nostalgic, supposedly does not translate that well onto a live action, big screen experience. Therefore, a whole new redesign of all the characters was necessary in order to make this movie appear realistic. And that is one of the main objectives behind this movie: it has to look absolutely real. In today’s age of special effects magic, there shouldn’t be too many movies that have cheap looking production values. But, in terms of scope and size, the visual challenges of the Transformers represent some of the biggest in moviemaking history.

Of course, because this is a big-budget adaptation of a classic 80’s cartoon and comic, the whole idea is to make this a trilogy. But, nobody is going to be interested in Transformers 2 & 3 if the first one looks amateurish. This is one of those movies that could never have been made at any other time before this one, and it’s just as imperative that all the effects are done to perfection. There are some cracks at movies that you only get one shot at, with no remake really possible. This is one of those movies!

Can’t wait to see it!

Orion Pax is a huge Transfomers fan & is eagerly awaiting this movie to come out!

In the meantime, he’s getting great deals on refurbished electronics, like the Playstation Portable and the Apple iPod Nano

What Makes a Good Landlord? Top Tips to Bring Success, Gain Respect and Popularity from Your Tenants

Letting your property is a proper business and to be a profitable landlord you need a business plan and procedures in place that you will need to complete, in order to rent out your property successfully, such as: a proper application and screening of prospective tenants, a carefully drawn up tenancy agreement, regular maintenance of the property, and an up-to-date knowledge of housing regulations, etc.

Top Tips on how to be a good landlord:

  • provide a copy or access to the Tenancy Agreement
  • provide a copy of the full inventory - stating condition of all fixtures and fittings - agreed by the tenant
  • keep the rent at or near market levels
  • make yourself readily available and contactable
  • provide emergency contact
  • encourage the tenant to report any dis-repair or faults promptly
  • deal with any repairs promptly
  • maintain gas and electrical installations, heaters and water heaters and sanitation in proper working order
  • arrange annual checks by a qualified electrician of the electrical supply, fire detector, alarms, etc - this is a legal requirement
  • arrange an annual gas safety certificate by a CORGI registered gas fitter - this is a legal requirement
  • replace any damaged furniture or fittings
  • maintain the interior and exterior decor - this will attract good tenants
  • ensure the safety and security of your tenants - check alarms, locks and fire extinguishers are working
  • Treat your tenants as you would like to be treated.

Some landlords like to carry out inspections, usually every 6 months, but many tenants find this invasive and feel it suggests that they are not considered trustworthy. Inspections also make the property feel less like theirs, which is not ideal as people tend to take more care of their own homes. If you feel happier inspecting your let, make sure you give your tenant plenty of notice - always at least 24 hours - and offer different times to fit in with their lives. If problems are arising the tenant should be notified in writing that this is likely to incur them added costs for cleaning or repairs.

    Tenancy Deposit Scheme

The deposit now has to be lodged with the custodial scheme, in case of any dispute at the end of the tenancy agreement.

The main thing to remember is that you may own the property, but for the rental period it is the tenant’s home.

FBI Online Cyber Crime Victims Form

The FBI has a convenient online Cyber Crime form for victims and/or the 3rd party to the complaint that is an easy-to-use reporting mechanism. A partnership has been formed with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3 formerly known as the Internet Fraud Complaint Center IFCC) and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C) for the combined objective of identifying and bringing to justice those responsible for online internet fraud.

The FBI-IC3’s stated Mission regarding Cyber Crime is “to serve as a vehicle to receive, develop, and refer criminal complaints regarding the rapidly expanding arena of cyber crime.” The IC3 provides the victims of cyber crime with an online reporting form that will be used to alert authorities of suspected criminal or civil violations. IC3 also provides their law enforcement partners and regulatory agencies at the federal, state, local and international level the internet related crime with information gathered through complaint forms to this centralized referral system.

In addition to partnering with law enforcement and regulatory agencies, it will remain a priority objective of the IC3 to establish effective alliances with industry. These alliances will enable the IC3 to leverage both the intelligence and subject matter required in identifying and crafting an aggressive, proactive approach to combating cyber crime.

IC3 accepts online Internet crime complaints from either the person who believes they were defrauded or from a third party to the complainant can best be processed if accurate and complete information accompanies the complaint. Debt Relief - 3 Tips to Landing On Solid Financial Ground

Life is not predictable. Especially not when it comes to
your debt and your finances. It seems like every time you
get ahead, something unexpected comes up that puts you right
back where you started. So how do you get out of debt and
    stay out of debt?

In order to get out of debt, while also building a nice
safety net so you can stay out of debt, you need to get
a handle on the basics of money management. This is absolutely
crucial to your debt relief. Unfortunately, none of this is
taught in school, although it should be. It would be a big
help to millions of people. Most of us don’t learn anything
about handling money until we already in debt.

    * Using a Budget

I know, you’ve heard this one before. And, like trying to
count calories, it’s not something many people can stick to
for any length of time. That’s because most people go about
it in a way that isn’t conducive to long term success. I
happen to agree with David Bach, author of The Automatic
    Millionaire
. David says you shouldn’t use a budget.

I know, I know, this subhead of this tip is Using A Budget.
Maybe it should be using a budget with a twist. In this
budgeting technique, we’re not going to count every penny
we spend. Instead, we are going to pay ourselves first, pay
our bills, and then anything left over can be spent anyway
you please and you don’t have to track every last penny.

If you have a lot of debt, you’ll want to focus on your debt
relief before saving for longer term goals like retirement.
This is because your debt, especially with higher interest
credit cards, is going to cost more than you will make if you
    save that money.

Once you pay down your debt, begin paying yourself first by
putting a certain percentage away in a retirement savings
account, then pay your monthly bills such as mortgage, utilities,
etc. The rest is for you to do with however you please.

As your financial situation improves, consider increasing the
percentage of your income that you pay yourself. You may be
only able to say 10% of your income when you start but you’ll
want to consider increasing that percentage as much as you
    can.

    * Setting Financial Goals

To paraphase hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, you miss all the goals
you don’t set. You need to know where you are going in order to
get there. And your financial goals will help determine how much
you pay yourself first. If you want to retire at age 50, and live
off the same income you currently make, you won’t be able to do it
by saving 10% of your income each year.

Set financial goals. Determine what you want your financial future
to look like, and how much money you’ll need to make that happen.
This will help you figure out how much you need to save in the
    present.

    * Building A Cash Reserve aka Your Safety Net

What’s next after you’ve climbed out of debt? Build a cash safety
net so you don’t slip back into debt, the way dieters put back all
the pounds they lose if they aren’t careful. Building up a cash
reserve will prevent you from piling up debt when unexpected
emergency expenses occur. How much should you have in your cash
    reserve?

A good rule of thumb is 3 to 6 months of your expenses
but ultimately it will be decided by what makes you comfortable.
For some people, that may be a full year’s worth of expenses.
This could be true for a lot of people that were deep in debt
and living paycheck to paycheck. They experienced the horrible
stress of such a situation and never want it to happen again.

Computer Running Slow? Upgrade or Replace

At some point you have been bogged down with a slow computer, one that doesnt quite respond like it used to. With the low costs of new computers, you have a difficult decision, should I upgrade or should I just replace.

There are all kinds of new computers out there, from the hottest PCs for the gamer in your house that might cost $6,000 or more, to the bargain PC that you can buy for around $300. Your wallet can determine how much you can spend on a new PC.

Most of the upgrades you will probably want to look at like an improved computer processor, some more memory, or a new graphics card can cost between $25 and $350.

New hardware comes out so quickly that what was cutting edge six months ago has had two successors since then. But, by keeping an eye on the hardware that you can purchase thats six months to a year old, you can save a ton of money with your upgrades without giving up too much power. Video cards in particular demand premium prices when they first come out, and then prices plummet once a new, improved model comes out.

Computer processors seem to follow these same guidelines, by buying an older processor you can usually buy a great processor for about a third of the price of the best one on the market. Usually in the $200-300 range finds the best deals on processors. What youll find is that you get almost as much power as the top of the line at a fraction of the price.

In almost all upgrades, I recommend buying more computer memory. For just a $100-200 you can usually significantly increase the memory in your computer and this typically is the most cost-effective upgrade you can make.

You can usually upgrade most computers at least once cost effectively. By adding just a little better hardware, you can extend the life of your computer a few years and improve your computer experience. Moving to a brand new computer can be quite a large change, with whole new sets of software to get used to which is why most people resist moving to a new computer.

But, eventually your options to upgrade become pretty slim. Now it depends on how you use the computer. But, if youre an average computer user, a few games here and there, lots of internet, and some office documents. Most of the time a computer can last you between 5-10 years with some key strategic upgrades

If however, you tend more towards the power user side of the equation, youre probably going to want a completely new system every three years or so. That seems to be right around when computer power doubles. For example a $1,000 computer three years ago, compared to a $1,000 computer today which has double the power.

If you decide to move towards a new computer, it’s become much easier with USB drives that can make easy backups of your important files. You can buy a 100GB USB drive for around $100, which is very handy to keep all of your important data.

I recommend going to www.pricewatch.com. You can get a feel for what type of upgrades you can afford, and then compare it to the costs of a brand new computer. Almost every computer upgrade you can imagine can be found there at a reasonable price.

Overall, the decision whether to upgrade or replace comes down to cost effectiveness if you can put in a small upgrade for under a few hundred bucks and it makes your computer last just a few short years longer, that is probably the right decision. But, over time it just doesnt make as much sense when even the mid to low priced systems are more effective than your current computer could ever be with all the upgrades. Good Luck with your decision.

    The Dyson DC15 Ball

The Ball is a large rubber, rotating cover which surrounds the motor. This ball is the sole steering mechanism. You simply angle the vacuum handle to turn the vacuum cleaner in one direction or another. The more you angle the unit the wider it turns. This eliminates the need to lift the head every time you want to turn the vacuum in a new direction. The ball also makes it much easier to get into tight places.

This model makes it easy to go from carpets to bare floors or delicate rugs. Just flip a switch and the brush turns off.

Don’t like the high cost of replacing filters? This Dyson uses a lifetime, washable HEPA filtration system. The Dyson’s filtration is approved for allergy sufferers by the British Allergy Foundation.

We’re all familiar with the routine of picking up the larger pieces of paper, rubber bands, and pennies before we vacuum. Dyson has reduced this step by creating an extra wide suction channel that pick up debris other vacuums spit out or leave behind.

There’s no longer a need to remove the attachment hose, plug it into the vacuum the slide on one of the attachments every time you need the vacuum hose. With the Dyson DC15 Ball, you simply slide the handle out, attach a brush or other attachment and your ready to go.

The DC15 uses a direct drive system to operate the brush bar. This eliminates the need to replace belts.

The Clear Bin eliminates the need to buy and handle replacement vacuum bags which saves you money, keeps your hands clean, and allows you to see just how much debris is being removed from your carpet.

There’s not much difference between The All Floors and The Animal except that The Animal is blue and comes with some of Dyson’s unique attachments. These attachments include the mini turbine, the carpet cleaning kit, and the low reach floor tool. Of course there is a difference in price.

Most new owners are amazed by the suction power of this vacuum cleaner. A lot of owners have tested this by vacuuming first with their old vacuum then going over the same carpet with their new Dyson. The DC15 never fails to pick up significantly more debris. This is very important when is comes to keeping rugs and carpets clean.

When you get your Dyson DC15 BAll vacuum, you’ll find that the assembly is very fast and easy. Dyson vacuums are not know for their quiet operation, but this seems to get better with each new model and this includes the DC17. The extension hose and attachments are easy to use and replace. Unlike other brands, all the suction power is diverted to the hose when in use. There is a slight learning curve with regards to turning corners but most owners find the ball makes tight cornering much easier.

The Dsyon DC15 Ball is a vacuum cleaner that lives up to it’s manufacturers claims. It’s hard to get customers to say anything good about any product unless they are very happy with their purchase. This vacuum cleaner gets rave reviews which should help you feel more confident in making a purchase.
