People on Purpose

“Many people have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification, but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.” ~ Helen Keller

Purpose

Do you know this person? He rises without hitting the snooze button. She works without complaining. He works longer and harder than anyone else. He always delivers on time. She gets there before anyone else. He cares little about the opinions of others. She consistently raises his own standards and expectations. He is not cowered or frightened by his circumstances - he is in control of his environment and his mind. If you know such a person, they are living on purpose. They have a Magnificent Obsession.

Paulo Coelho said, “But there is suffering in life, and there are defeats. No one can avoid them. But it’s better to lose some of the battles in the struggles for your dreams than to be defeated without ever knowing what you’re fighting for.” People with a very specific and definite purpose are not easily phased or thrown off course. They are utterly reliable and focused. They do not make excuses. Their lives are meaningful. They know who they are and they don’t need anyone else’s permission, endorsement or acknowledgement - only their own.

Thomas Paine said, “The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value. I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress and grow brave by reflection. ‘Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death.” He knew whereof he spoke. Purpose driven people pay the price of success gladly. They are warriors.

Unstoppable people are Eagles - they have goals and objectives and they are self reliant. They concur with Ayn Rand’s definition of Freedom: “To ask for nothing, to expect nothing, to depend on nothing.” And Freedom is usually their highest value. They enjoy strong self esteem and confidently pioneer new frontiers, never doubting their own ability. They don’t know how to turn tail, quit or compromise. It’s foreign to them. Eagles expect to win.

Someone with a purpose will know unprecedented peace, power and profit when they discover their own Magnificent Obsession and give themselves permission to win at all costs. They are strengthened by detours, obstructions and the mindless, seething masses. They see beyond the ordinary. They rise majestically above the quicksand of Collectivism and compromise.

Do you see this person in the mirror every morning? You can, you know.

Who’s Got Your Back? Joint Ventures

Entrepreneurs understand how important it is to surround oneself with strong, dependable, loyal and able people. It’s been said that, in the heat of battle, the soldiers who stand by you are not the college kids and the pretty boys, but rather the ex cons, thugs, drifters and pimps. When the bullets are flying, somehow a PhD or MBA doesn’t make much of a difference.

If you were about to trek across the ice to the North Pole, whom would you choose to be on your team? Whom would you trust with your life? Would you choose someone from Greenpeace or someone from the Marines? A “peacekeeper” or a warrior? I want the toughest character can find on my side, not some politically correct wimp who’s scared of hurting a tree or upsetting an owl’s nest. I want people who are serious about success, hungry, fearless, determined and very, very disciplined. How about you?

The team you build will mirror, or at least strongly aspire to, your level of integrity, motivation, professionalism and drive. Your “Inner Circle” should be very carefully selected, vetted and constantly trained and tested. And when you see cracks in their veneer, you should remove them from your orbit - fast. Sincerity, grit and focus should be a requirement, not an optional extra. Your team members will either carry you or drop you. They will either be the wind beneath your wings or the quicksand under your feet. And it all depends on your leadership ability.

Have you ever heard of a “Cult Manager”? Probably not - it’s Cult Leader. And the best people will follow the best leaders. So, instead of bewailing your fate and complaining about the losers in your team, go to the bathroom and take a good, hard look in the mirror. You are a magnet. You either attract Eagles or ducks. If you behave like a loser, that’s exactly what you’ll attract. If you accept mediocrity and compromise, that’s the team you’ll soon be scraping off your shoe. But if you set a high standard and strive for a magnificent vision, you’ll find strong people joining you, and the sky’s the limit. Together, we can do amazing things.

Sales Tip

Just as a leader must carefully choose his team, so must a salesperson carefully select his clients. Surround yourself with excellent people at all times. Don’t suffer fools lightly. Good people will lead you to more good people. Invest in your clients and the ROI is great.

Management Tip

A few good salespeople with serious commitment and very specific goals is far better than a big bunch of wanna be’s and has-beens. Spend your time carefully. Invest in good stock. If you’re a lifelong learner, so will your team be. Set the pace, set the standard, set the example. Be selective and demand excellence.

“Leadership can be thought of as a capacity to define oneself to others in a way that clarifies and expands a vision of the future.” ~ Edwin H. Friedman

Search Engine Marketing- Are Longer Keyphrases Better for Achieving a Higher Search Engine Ranking?

Back when the internet was just starting most people that used search engines searched
for one or two word phrases like ‘marketing’ or ‘hockey’. Because of that, writing SEO
copy that was both rich in terms of content but also relevant to the site was reasonably
easy.

Nowadays though there is so much information available on the internet. For that reason
people are using longer keyphrases (on average around three or four words in the developed nations)
in order to facilitate finding some more relevant information.

This means that if you are targeting the keyword ” hockey marketing” it will become
even more targeted because naturally there will be less people searching for something
that specific.

The copywriting industry has not been as fast to recognize and adapt to this and because
of that it is definitely possible to achieve a higher search engine ranking for some of
these longer, more targeted phrases. However, while it is possible and in many ways
easier there are things you still need to be aware of in order to make your efforts
successful.

For starters, longer keyphrases are harder to write into copy. This is because of the
more rigid structure that one must apply to these keyphrases and because of this it
can sometimes make the copy seem jerky and unprofessional in nature. This can serve
to not only repulse people from your website but also cause it to suffer in the grand
scheme of appropriate search engine results.

So while it is definitely possible to achieve that higher search engine ranking with
longer keyphrases at the same time it is something that you need to do very carefully
indeed.

Online Photo Album - Store And Protect Your Exceptional Photos And Memories

Between camera phones and the World Wide Web, technology truly has revolutionized the way that everyday people deal with their pictures. Of course, technology can be a bit over rated, and it can be rather out of control at times but online photo albums are one of the more positive aspects of the rapidly advancing nature of technology.

Where Can I Get An Online Photo Album?

You can get access to online photo albums on a free or paid basis at various sites throughout the internet. Depending on how many pictures you want to share, what your connection is like, your particular preferences and a number of other things chances are that you can find a free online photo album site that fits your needs.

Is Building an Online Photo Album Hard to Do?

Building an online photo album is not a difficult thing to do. As a matter of fact, it is much easier to build a web based photo album to share with friends and family than to put hours and hours and money into fancy acid-free paper with the other alternative, and that is scrap booking. There is no replacement for real photographs and actual storage methods, but as far as showing off pictures and bragging to friends and family, online photo albums are the most surefire way to get it done. All you have to do is browse for pictures on your personal computer and upload them onto the site. From there, you can organize the pictures into sub-albums and edit them. You even have the option of making some folders private and others public, so anybody with the proper URLs can access your photographs. With private albums, there is a password required to get into the folder, but most sites give you the option of sending out an automated email with the URL and password information in it.

For this reason, many intimate family moments are in the kind of album that is kept private and password protected. On the other hand, family reunion pictures or even an artistic portfolio are probably photographs that you would want to make public to other internet browsers. Building an online photo album is all a matter of pointing and clicking. The shooting part of the deal was done before the online photo album even entered the picture, and the picture taking is the hardest part of all.

Allowing Others Access to Your Pictures

The advantage to having an online photo album as opposed to a traditional one is that you can show your pictures off to anybody with an internet connection. This gives Grandma almost instant access to ballet recital pictures, even if she lives clear across the United States of America, as is so often the case. These albums even allow people to leave comments n the pictures, telling what they think or writing about the memory behind the picture; this is just one of the newer and more pleasant features of online photo albums.

If you are the type who likes to take and show off a lot of pictures, save yourself a lot of money and your friends and family a lot of time. Set up an online photo album to show off all of your precious moments to anybody with an internet connection.

How Badly Do You Want It?

Do you want to know whether or not you will achieve your goals? Just look at your life, and you’ll know! What you consistently do in your life is a very clear prediction of where you will be in two years’ time. Your level of self discipline is a crystal ball - there is a definite link between discipline, self esteem and accomplishment. Look how many hours you spend dedicated to the accomplishment of your goals, and your future will reveal itself to you.
“We shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty.” - John F. Kennedy

Successful people are “Outcome Driven”. They know exactly what they want. They focus on the reward, not the process. They highly respect, protect and prize their time. They do things in the order of their importance. Their time is prioritized. Frank Lloyd Wright said, “I know the price of success: dedication, hard work, and an unremitting devotion to the things you want to see happen.” Mike Litman says, “You don’t have to get it right; you just have to get it going. Take action NOW. In life, you’re either consistent or you’re non-existent.”

Do you prepare your day with a Do List of the six things you absolutely have to accomplish the next day? Is your vision so clear, so compelling, so exciting, that you can’t go back to sleep again after thinking of it? Or do you drift along, side tracked and buffeted by every new quick buck scheme and MLM dream, grabbing here and there and never sticking to anything? Or are you an unstoppable machine, up early and rearing to go? How worn is the snooze button on your alarm clock? Do you even NEED an alarm clock? And please check your philosophy. Your entire life and business is a reflection of your philosophy.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said, “The heights by great men reached and kept / Were not attained by sudden flight, / But they, while their companions slept, / Were toiling upward in the night.” How many hours a day do you dedicate to your magnificent obsession? If you see a need for change, CHANGE NOW. Take charge. It’s not too late! Make it happen. Align yourself with Eagles, cut the ducks out of your life and kick any money making scam that isn’t working to the curb. Get a new telephone number and only give it to winners. You can do it.

Forget Martial Arts and Self Defense Classes - These Self Defense Techniques Work on the Street!

That’s right! Forget the martial arts and self defense classes, forget karate, forget most things that you have read about self defense. When it comes to a REAL street attack, all the martial arts moves you spent hours practicing under instruction will be useless.

The aggressive drug user, street robber, or drunken thug will not follow set moves or patterns shown in self defense instruction manuals or martial arts books.You need to know how to disable that threat as quickly as possible and then make good your escape.Unlike martial arts instruction centres or self defense classes there are no rules to street attacks and there are no rules on defending yourself too. Do not be afraid to be a ‘dirty’ fighter.Before I mention some of the techniques to use to fend off any attacker I must stress these 2 points first;

1) If at all possible, run.

Do not be a hero. No matter how much you make dislike a drunken or drugged up thug trying to rob you, intimidate you, threaten you or hurt you, the best method to stay alive is get out of that situation. They are already in the mindset of confrontation, have planned what they will do and are ready to go. You are unprepared and likely to be hurt. If you see a gap, take it and get clear the situation.

2) Distract your opponent.

They will be expecting you to be intimidated and surprised so do the unexpected. Shout as loud as you can at your attacker and cause a big scene. This may be enough to get them to step back giving you a few seconds with which to escape.

Now, and only now, if you cannot do that, and are boxed in a corner then you can use these moves to stop your attacker no matter how big they are;

1) Groin Kick. Very underestimated in self defense. Remember there are no rules here. Kick as hard as you can, or if you are close or grappling, grab it with your hand, pull and twist. Forget martial arts rules! Go for the groin!

2) Eye gouge. Again, very frowned upon because it is a ‘dirty’ trick. Yes, it is, but it works. Put your fingers or thumbs into your attackers eyes. As well as pain it will cause blurred vision. Another martial arts no-no but this is the street!

3) Throat punch. A punch or elbow to the throat will have the same effect as choking. Instant pain and a struggle to breathe. Again, a self defense shock tactic to enable you to escape.

4) Neck punch. Similar to the above but on the side of the neck. A hard punch will interrupt the artery blood flow and cause the attacker to faint or at the very least, black out for a split second thus allowing enough time to escape.

5) Cupped hands. Cup your hands and ‘clap’ his ears. This is a dirty trick that will burst his ear drums and instantly stop any attack. Very effective self defense technique.

6) Nostrils. This one if for very close fighting. Fingers in the nostrils can pull his nose, and hence him, wherever you want. It may sound like a funny one to do but believe me, an attacker of any size can be pulled off another person or yourself, or his head pulled back by a much smaller opponent just by pulling his nose up his face!

7) Side kick to the knee. The knee is a very vulnerable part of the attackers body. A side kick to this can pop his knee out of place with ease, or even shatter the whole kneecap. Just sweep the kick side on to his knee as hard as you can. Those with a little martial arts instruction will be super- effective at this self defense technique.Remember, if you can, then get away as fast as you can. If not, then use the street attack moves above. Yes they are unorthodox, they are dirty but they work. You do not need to know the fancy moves from martial arts and self defense classes. They won’t work in real life even if you can remember them all.

Cats, Their Names, Health & More

A cat can touch your heart like no other animal. Unlike dogs, cats tend to be choosy. They love very selectively. Dogs like everyone, you need to earn a cat’s trust. When you are loved by a cat you are loved. It doesn’t matter the cat breed you may pick. There are so many to choose from, and each seems to have it’s own temperamental characteristics as well as it’s own look. Some of these breeds have names like York Chocolate Cat and Norwegian Forest Cat. Breeds are broken down by hair type. Longhair and semi-longhair and short hair. Then there are breeds “based on mutation” and “breeds derived from crosses with wild felids” that actually look like tigers and lions.

I personally like big cats and prefer breeds like Maine Coon cats and lovely long haired Persian cats. However, my heart belongs to a rescue classic orange Tabby cat named Norman, and to a beautiful black Sphinx-like cat named Hana.

Choosing the perfect cat name is a big responsibility too. Norman was named when we rescued him. Hana I brought back from the island of Anguilla in the Caribbean with help from the Anguilla Animal Rescue Fund. The word Malliouhana is Arawak for Anguilla. The Arawaks were the original Anguillians. I decided to name her Hana in honor of her birthplace. It also was a name that seemed to suit her. My friend and I tossed many different names back and forth before I chose Hana.

As a cat owner you have many responsibilities. Aside from the obvious of loving your pet and enjoying it’s company, your cat’s health comes first. As strong and nimble as your cat may appear he or she still has a very delicate chemical system that can be thrown out of wack very easily. One of the first ways you’ll know your cat is feeling off is by a change in your cat’s behavior.

One of the first ways a cat may say he or she isn’t feeling well is by urinating in spots other than the litter box. If you car does this and there hasn’t been a change in his environment then you should take you cat into the vet for a check up. If you cat does start urinating in your home this brings on another aspect of cat ownership, and an unfortunate one, learning how to clean cat urine. If you’ve a male cat you have a whole different problem. The smell of male cat urine is unmistakable and strong and although there are dozens of cat urine cleaning products on the market none of them work perfectly and you may never really get rid of the smell. If you’ve still a hint of male cat urine smell it can cause new males cats in your home to urinate in the same spot as a way to mark territory.

If you need any cat supplies you’ll have more to choose from than you can imagine, and you have many places you can get them. From the pet “superstores” like PetSmart and Petco, and catalogs like Drs. FosterSmith you can get any cat supply you need from food to medicines, from bedding to toys and beyond.

From Management to Leadership

We are all leaders; in our families, churches, temples, lodges, clubs, businesses and fraternal organizations.

Have you ever heard of a Cult Manager? Yet where have we ever seen more loyalty, commitment and blind obedience? No such thing as a Religious Manager. There’s a huge difference between management and leadership. “Semantics”, you say. When I went to Hotel School I was taught how to be a Hotel Manager. I found that I had to become a Leader in order to gain the loyalty and commitment of my staff.

When I first arrived to work as a manager in a hotel in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, the staff did the usual hotel staff things to test me. The cashier would mix up the cash register, and see if I could sort out the problem. The night chefs would stay home, and see if I could handle the kitchen at night and prepare the breakfast. I had to prove myself.

How does a manager cope with that, as opposed to a leader? I was called in to a meeting of my management peers and they told me to fire a certain Functions Manager. He was a rebel and no good, they said. Lazy. Obstinate. Get rid of him! His name was Oral, I’ll never forget. I watched him at work. His staff of waiters would set up the conferences and do all the work perfectly while he sat outside, smoking. I called Oral into my office and fired him. Then I said, “Oral, I’ve done what everyone here wanted me to do. I fired you. Now, I’m rehiring you on my terms. Here are my terms: You can sit outside and smoke all day. You never have to enter the hotel. As long as the job gets done to my satisfaction, I’m happy. If not, we will talk. How’s that?” Oral beamed. He thanked me profusely. He was happy. He did a great job. I was happy. And one day he saved me from being badly beaten up. Oral, you see, was a natural leader. He understood leadership. Suffice is to say that after a while I had a loyal following instead of an obedient staff.

A leader understands that she is leading personalities with value systems, goals, fears, hopes and dreams. She knows that she can get people to work 24/7/365 when she pushes the right buttons. I once worked for a hotel owner for nine months with one day off in all that time. He was a true leader. Arthur Honey. He was Roger Bannister’s second when Roger Bannister broke the 3 minute mile. He could inspire, motivate and encourage people. He never ran, raised his voice or panicked.

When I was 17 I was drafted into the army. I saw what leadership was and I saw what psychopaths did. The psychopathic, racist South African army officers got people to do things by force. They achieved very little. The true leaders in the army got a lot more done, without fear, manipulation or force. They got soldiers volunteering for things. When your people are motivated and have a vision and a goal, they will achieve their goals and your goals together. Without pay, if necessary. Financial rewards and incentives are not the most powerful there are.

Here are some questions we should be asking the people we intend to lead:

1. What is your greatest fear and your greatest dream? Why is that your fear? Why is that your dream?

2. If you had a million dollars and lots of time and energy, what would you be doing right now?

3. What feelings do you want to experience, and what feelings do you want to avoid in your life?

4. What’s the best book/movie you ever read/saw?

5. What are you most proud of about yourself? What is you greatest skill? What do you do best?

6. What are you weakest at?

7. If you could have any job, what would it be, and why?

8. What is your greatest worry?

9. How do you feel about…?

10. What would you change about this business/organization?

Ask open ended questions; draw them out. “Tell me more? What do you mean by that, exactly? Why do you say that? And? Yes?”

The true leader knows that she has to know a lot about the people she wants to lead. She has to empathize and care. Show them how to measure their progress. She has to be sure that she treats them fairly and that there is a consistency about the way she leads. Regularity, honesty and consistency is important. And there must be clear guidelines, consequences and reasons for what happens. Everyone must understand why they are to do what they do, what the outcome is supposed to be, the consequences for failing to do the right thing and the BIG PICTURE. The vision, the overall strategy, should be understood by everyone concerned.

Most of all, each team member should know that, by reaching the company or organization’s goals, they will reach their personal goals as well. They should have a vested interest in the success of the venture. This is vitally important.

Mortimer Adler was quoted in Time Magazine in 1974 as saying, “In Aristotelian terms, the good leader must have ethos, pathos and logos. The ethos is his moral character, the source of his ability to persuade. The pathos is his ability to touch feelings, to move people emotionally. The logos is his ability to give reasons for an action, to move people intellectually.”

I hired my last secretary in a restaurant. She and her husband asked me for a Job Description. This was my answer: “Francesca, this is your job description. Whatever it takes, 24/7, total commitment and loyalty and total honesty. Whatever it takes. I will be as committed to you, as you are to me. Take it or leave it. What salary do you want?” She wanted $2,000 per month. I knew that she would settle for $1,800. So I offered her $2,500. I got a fantastic secretary and a very supportive husband. She left when I emigrated.

Very few managers know how to lead. It’s never too late to change. Leaders are firm, flexible, value-driven and honest. They have Magnificent Obsessions, driving goals and clear action plans. Their followers feel loved, secure, cared for and lucky. Together, we can do amazing things.

Taking Good Digital Photos of People’s Faces

Taking a really good digital photo of someone face can be very impressive. Accomplishing such high quality with face photos is hard. There are many things to consider such as shooting angle, lighting conditions, flash usage and background handling. Here are some tips and ideas to help you achieve better face photos.

Following is a list of things to consider when taking such face digital photos. As always it is better to experiment and try out the concepts described here in order to get a better grasp of why they are important and how they can be used to your benefit.

The right background: A face photo is as the name says all about the person face. You would like the digital photo viewer to focus on the face. By choosing the wrong background you might draw the viewer attention to other objects rather than the person face. The right background on the other hand can focus the view attention on the person face and at the same time also emphasize some of the face characteristics. It is best to pick a neutral background that does not attract attention. A soft solid color background for example is much better than a busy street background. It is also good practice to avoid having people or other moving or interesting objects in the background.

Blurring the background: you can use another technique in order to make sure that the person face stands out in the photo. This technique involves blurring the background. By blurring the background you send a message to the viewer that the background is not important and you emphasize the face as the only in-focus object in the photo. Blurring the background can be achieved by taking a photo using a shallow depth of field. Shallow depth of field is accomplished by using a zoom lens and shooting from a short distance or by setting a wide aperture. If your camera does not allow you to blur the photo by setting a shallow depth of field (it is hard to achieve such a depth of field with low-end pocket cameras) you can always blur the background later on using photo processing software on your computer.

The eyes are the center: focusing on the person face is best achieved by actually focusing on the person eyes. The eye are the most important part of the person face in the photo and usually express the most emotions and human touch. Try to play around with the person looking straight to the camera or sideways focusing on some other object. A smile is also recommended unless you are specifically looking for a face that does not smile in order to send some message to the viewer.

Lighting: capturing the face skin color is mostly a matter of using the right lighting. The best lighting is natural lighting. Taking face photos outdoors during the day is good practice in order to capture the skin color and warmth. When using outdoors natural light position the person in a way that the sun light hits it from the side. Do not take face photo with the sun behind the person or right in front as these will result in shadings or overexposure respectively. With lighting coming from the side some shades might appear on the person face, to compensate for these simply use a soft fill-in flash. If you must shoot indoors and use artificial lighting try to use indirect light sources such as bounce flash or lights that illuminate the room instead of directly shining on the person.
