The Power Of Habits

I’m going to start off with a really powerful quote by Mike Murdock, which goes, “the secret of your success is hidden in your daily routine”. I saw another good one too the other day that said, “successful people do what unsuccessful people are not prepared to do”.

And that’s exactly my point: there are hundreds of little things we either are doing or not doing that affect the degree of success that we’ve achieved.

A habit is an action done so many times that we don’t even have to think consciously about doing it anymore.

Most people agree that it takes 21 days to form a habit and only 3 days to break it. For example, when we were very small, we were all trained to brush our teeth every morning. The toothbrush with toothpaste was given to us and we dutifully brushed our teeth every day. Now, I don’t know anyone at my age (!) who has to really think about brushing his or her teeth. I know that I stumble to the bathroom, half-asleep, and brush my teeth automatically. Why? It’s a habit.

If you take time to think about your daily routine, you’ll notice lots of good habits like driving within the speed limit (J), drinking 2L of water daily, etc. A few years ago, I decided that I needed to start drinking more water. So on 1 January 1998, I started forcing myself to drink 2L of water every day. This habit took hold in only 14 days because after the first two weeks, it was easy and it’s been that way ever since.

Now, in the same way that good habits are formed, bad habits are also created just as easily. I know of people who start saving, say R100 every month, and everything goes well for three or four months. Then they decide to go on holiday and stop saving for one month. The snag is that it doesn’t end up being just one month, because the habit they were creating has been broken. The next month it’s easier to spend that R100 on clothes, and after the third month, they’re back to square one!

So this month, I want to encourage you to think about some good habits you want to start implementing and some bad habits that you need to replace with good ones.

If you currently have a bad habit at work of shuffling paper around and not dealing with it, start this month by being disciplined and either filing it, working on it or throwing it away. When you’re tempted to just throw it back into your in-tray or start making a pile on your desk, STOP!

Remember that you have the power to break that bad habit and start creating some good ones. And the same goes for driving - if you’re like me and let other drivers on the road irritate you, stop and tell yourself that you’re going to replace all that negative behaviour with something positive. Maybe you need to start saying things like, “I am perfectly calm and stress-free in traffic.”

Action challenge

Print out the habits worksheet.

If you work outside the home, copy it so that you have one at home and one at work.

Read through your list every day to remind yourself of the habits.

Start implementing it. Make like Nike and “just do it”

Positive or Negative Thinking

At this moment you can find ample evidence to prove that your life is miserable, boring and depressing. You can also find evidence to prove that your life is joyful, abundant and exciting.

Let’s do an exercise!

Look around the room you are in. Do you see any dust and dirt? Any disorder? A closet or drawers that need organiziing? A pile of papers that should be filed or recycled? Does the room need paint or repair? Is the light switch plate smudged?

How do you feel? Did you find enough evidence that life is awful, depressing and too much to handle?

Look around the room again. Do you see something given by a friend or family member that is special to you? Does it bring sweet memories? Are you sitting on a comfortable chair? Do you have a computer to stay in touch with friends and learn all kinds of exciting things? Do you have flooring that is nicer than a dirt floor? Anything there that produces music for you? CD player, radio? Isn’t it marvelous that we can flip that switch and have light any time of day or night?

How do you feel now? Did you find enough evidence that life is grand, wonderful and full of good things?

Our thoughts are powerful! Those thoughts control hormones in our body and those hormones make us feel good or bad. They also determine whether we have good health or bad health. Whether we are depressed or joyful.

Yes, there is a chemical imbalance when people are depressed, but we must ask why? God did not create us that way. There is plenty of research out there on what thoughts to do our health.

If you looked around the room and didn’t find anything good that didn’t come without a sad or negative thought, I would say that you don’t feel very healthy in that state of thinking. It takes a major overhaul to get your “stinking thinking” out the door, but you can do it!

What about positive thinking? That can be just as bad for you!

Positive thinkers sometimes use positive thinking as a way to justify their inability to accept the moment. They have a long list of “shoulds” and unless their circumstances match up with perfection (and it rarely does), they retreat into positive thoughts, thinking they will provide a better world for everyone with positive statements.

In other words, some positive thinkers have a holy sounding form of denial.

To quote from the book, “You Can’t Afford the Luxury of a Negative Thought” (Subtitle: a book for people with life-threatening illness):

“To focus on the positive is not to disregard certain warning signals of a “negative” nature that, if ignored, eventually lead to inconvenience at best and disaster at worst. If we use these negative signals to avoid disaster, then they’re not negative after all. “

In the case of disease, we can acknowledge the symptoms of a disease and learn all we can to overcome that disease and move towards that goal. Or, we can begin saying that “we have” that disease. After claiming it as ours long enough our mind tends to believe it and our body may be less likely to get rid of it.

We are told to live in the moment, but most of us are thinking of the past and/or the future most of the day, so if we are going to do this, at least make it pleasant. Think of the good things from the past and the good things that will be happening in the future.

Keep it balanced! Negative thinking makes everything bleak and awful. Positive thinking imagines anything wonderful whether realistic or not, whether it’s related to the event or not. Some people do this by quoting wonderful (unrelated) Scriptures any time somebody mentions a negative event.

Focus on the positive! That’s not positive thinking!

There is a time for sadness and realizing the present facts. It’s about how you deal with it. Realizing that you do not do something well is not negative thinking. It’s evaluating life and how to make it better for yourself.

To quote the above book again: “Positive thinking only puts a gap between where you are physically and where you think you “should” be. There are no “shoulds” to a life-threatening illness. You’ll be happier, and probably heal faster, if you let go of as many shoulds as you can……. It took a lot of negative thinking - decades in some cases - to bring on an illness. Why should a week or two of positive thinking get rid of it?”

Meet in the middle with wisdom somewhere between the sewer and the clouds. Focus on the positive, but make it real. Your brain and body knows the difference. Wellness doesn’t come without believing what you think and say. Your brain will not believe the unbelievable.

Benefits Of Tax Debt Elimination With A Consolidation Loan

The interests charged are significantly higher because they are not the regulated ones but punishment ones (fines) instead because the law seems to understand that tax debt affects all the society. Also, the processes to recover the money owed are shorter and more expeditious and thus, tax debt needs to be resolved in a speedy manner with great risks of losing assets if not.

The problem is that money isn’t always there and though the smarter thing to do is to pay taxes when they are due and avoid debt accumulation, once it has already happened some sort of alternative needs to be used. A not so uncommon practice is to resort to debt consolidation loans. These loans are useful because they charge low interests, because other creditors can be included too and thus all debt is unified but there is also another reason that is especially important when it comes to tax debt elimination.

Interests On Debt Consolidation Loans Based On Equity Are Tax Deductible

The interests on a home equity loan (most debt consolidation loans are based on equity), are tax deductible. That means that all the interests on the loan you take to pay off your tax debt and other debts can be taken away from your tax payments on the following period. This implies either great savings or it can be viewed as a further reduction on the interest rate paid for the new loan. Thus, you would be exchanging expensive debt for an even cheaper consolidation loan.

Other debt that is not tax deductible and usually charges higher interest rates are: car loans, motorcycle loans, other vehicle loans, credit card debt, store card debt, payday loans, cash advance loans, unsecured personal loans, etc. Therefore, it is a good idea to take into account all this debt when deciding the loan amount of your consolidation loan.

Some Restrictions May Apply

It is possible to deduct the interests on a consolidation loan of up to $100,000. This limitation applies both to a single loan or a combination of loans. For instance: If you have a property worth $200,000 with an outstanding mortgage debt of $40,000, you would be able to obtain a home equity loan of up to $160,000 and use it for consolidation. However, you would only be able to deduct the interests on the first $100,000.

But you could also have two properties, worth $150,000 and $50,000 each with a combined mortgage debt of $40,000 and the solution would be exactly the same. The only difference might be the need to request two separate home equity loans instead of a single one. But you would still be able to deduct the interests on up to $100,000 of the combined new debt.

Also, bear in mind that this ability to deduct the interests on a home equity loan used for consolidation, applies only to the part of the loan that is secured with actual home equity. Those loans that finance 125% of the property can only be partially useful. For example: If the property is worth $100,000 but there is a mortgage balance of $50,000 and you manage to obtain a 125% home equity loan for $75,000, only the first $50,000 interests will be deductible even though $75,000 is lower than $100,000. This is due to the fact that the remaining $25,000 is not secured with actual equity.

Who Are You Performing For?

I turned 50 this year (2000). I never thought much about my age before, but 50 has always sounded rather old to me. Now those of you who are in your 60’s and 70’s will just giggle and say, “young whippersnapper.”

When you have health problems that prevent you from doing what you want to do, you sometimes doubt that you can make a difference in life. People rather expect to slow down and do less when they get “older” but that doesn’t mean they are worth less.

I saw a plaque one time that said, “By the time you get to greener pastures, you can’t climb the fence.” No matter whether we age as we get older, or if we’ve “aged” rather young due to health problems, we really like to be able to do all that we want to do. Much of our opinion of ourselves might depend on our being able to do so.

Performance is a big deal in our culture and it’s hard to escape from it even with the greatest of efforts to simplify your life.

Performance is definitely overrated in our society. Your level of performance has nothing to do with your value as a person. Just because you can’t do some things that others may be able to do doesn’t mean that you can’t do other great things.

Scripture tells us that it’s not what you do that counts with God. It’s what you ARE. Life is a process of becoming more like Jesus. The God of creation is looking for a personal relationship with you, not a power-packed performance that wins the gold. He wants us to KNOW HIM and the power of His resurrection. He wants to be our very best friend without any expectations.

What a goal to look at … rather than the list that the world gives us.

10 Ways To Increase Your Self-Confidence

If you look at most successful people, you’ll see that they all have one thing in common - self-confidence. Yes, some people are born with it but for most other people, it’s a learned skill.

Here are my top suggestions to increase your confidence:

1. Work on your body language. We’ve all been at places where someone quite ordinary strides into a room, makes eye contact and starts impressing the socks off everybody. Or where you think somebody’s at least 6 feet tall because of their bearing and the way they carry themselves and then later you realize they’re quite average.

Like it or not - first impressions do count. So stand tall and practise good posture. Imagine that you’re being pulled by a string going all the way from your toes to the top of your head. And whenever you enter a room, don’t walk in almost apologetically. Stride in, make eye contact and be the first to introduce yourself.

2. Get involved in a physical activity - walking, swimming, etc. Any physical exercise like walking, running, dancing, etc. will make you feel better about yourself. Firstly, exercising releases all those good hormones and then your body image will improve the fitter you get.

3. Wear clothes that fit you correctly. In the past, I’ve made the mistake of trying to disguise my body flaws by wearing baggy clothes. Have you?

The truth is that wearing ill-fitting clothes only serves to accentuate the very areas you’re trying to cover up. Those big, baggy T-shirts don’t do any favours for most women. In fact, they make you look even bigger.

Sometimes we squeeze ourselves into a pair of jeans (in the correct size) but they look terrible because of the cut. It is much better to buy a larger size and be comfortable. It’s the fit not the size that matters.

4. Be kind to yourself. Think about the things you tell yourself when you make a mistake. Would you say those same things to your friends? Probably not.

When we make mistakes, we are often very hard on ourselves. Yet we treat other people much, much better. Next time this happens, stop and start talking to yourself as you would talk to a friend.

5. Remind yourself often of your good qualities. Do you know what your best qualities are?

Are you kind and compassionate? Do you treat people fairly? Are you a friendly person? Do you like to help people?

Make a list of at least five good qualities and remind yourself of them daily, but especially when you’re having a bad day.

6. Don’t dwell on your past mistakes. Recognise that the mistake does not define who you are. You can fail an exam without being a failure. Your relationship might have gone off in the ditch but that does not mean you are a failure.

Keep things in perspective. It just means that you failed the exam or that the relationship failed.

7. Surround yourself with supportive people. The last thing you need when you feel down or less-than-fabulous is to be surrounded by naysayers and negative people telling you that “all men suck” or “it’s impossible to get that job you’re after”.

Choose carefully who you share your heart with and surround yourself with people who will encourage and motivate people. If you don’t have many of those in your life, then contact me and I will be your cheerleader!

8. Keep learning new skills Aside from keeping your mind sharp (and preventing Alzheimer’s), be a life-long learner. I’m not necessarily talking about formal education.

What’s stopping you from learning a new language, taking a dance class, learning some new computer skills, taking up blogging, etc.

Learning will improve your confidence by leaps and bounds.

9. Take the time to reach out to other people through community programmes, etc. If ever you feel down, there’s no better upper than helping other people. Volunteer your services at a children’s orphanage or an old aged home.

My challenge to you is this - next time you eat out at a restaurant, instead of sending half your meal back to the kitchen, get a doggie bag and give it to the beggar on the nearest corner. His appreciation will melt the hardest of hearts.

10. Learn to stand up for yourself Your soul dies a tiny little bit every time you keep quiet when you should speak up for yourself. Being a doormat is not attractive and will get you nowhere in the long run.

If haven’t had much practice before, start with small things. Insist on low-fat milk in your coffee. Return the milk that went sour before the due date. Write a letter of complain if you get bad customer service.

And only when you’re feeling more confident, then tackle bigger issues like speaking to your boss about overloading you with work or your friends about relationship issues.

Learn to say no. It’s not a swear word - I promise.

With Father’s Day just having passed, I know many hearts and minds have been focused on their fathers of this world. For some that is a joyous event, but for many it’s a very heartbreaking and soul-stirring time.

We have many promises in The Word. They are there to guide us, give us hope, and give us direction in how to attain them. There are many “if” clauses in the Bible. If you do this … you get this. Sometimes we claim a Scripture but fail to read the “if clause” before it.

I love the Psalms of David. Psalms offers a lot of comfort because David went through some pretty tough times in his life and yet he kept his heart close to God and God was close to him. Read the following from Psalm 112. Feel and experience the promise and hope in them.

“Praise ye the Lord. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in His commandments. His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed. Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever. Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous. A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion. Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance. He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord.” (Psalms 112:1-7)

I want my heart fixed. I want those promises for my seed and I definitely need that light in the dark areas of my life. So I seek to understand what “feareth the Lord” means. I want to know Him. I want to delight in His commandments because they are life.

Strong’s Concordance says the definition of this Hebrew word, feareth, means: “to fear, to revere, be afraid, reverence.

Many people don’t want to think of God with fear. They think of their earthly fathers and some people lived in fear their whole childhood, so they want to see a loving God. That’s understandable, but a perfect Father would be one with love but also one you would fear/reverence so that you would do the right thing.

Personally I grew up with a Daddy that had nothing but love for me [he happened to be my grandfather]. My mother [grandmother] had to handle the discipline because there was not a cross word from my father no matter what I did. That may sound delightful to those who grew up with a mean father, but out of balance, is out of balance either way. I have had a struggle seeing God as God because I look at fathers as somebody to give me anything I want and to fix every problem I have.

That lack of balance is definitely in my face the past couple of weeks since we have discovered that we will not be moving into the house we’ve been building since November and we won’t be moving onto the land that we’ve loved since last June. It’s a tragic story but I know God uses all for good and rather than fixing this just the way I want it, we are promised God’s best if we love Him. The hardest part is having to finish the project and get it sold before we can move on to another piece of land? another house building project? another house already built? Unanswered questions with much time to wait offers many opportunities for us to Trust and have Faith in our Father.

Our God is an awesome God and He is everything to us, but we have to know that His commandments are just that. We are commanded to follow them. Those with mean fathers generally want no more commands in their lives. Those with fathers like I had tend to whine and dwell in self-pity when we find that the problems of life aren’t being instantly fixed by God.

Proverbs says, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. (Proverbs 3:5-9)

The navel is defined in Strong’s Concordance as “the center of strength.” Marrow is defined as “moisture, drink, refreshment.” There are many diseases affecting the bones and there is certainly a lack of strength and energy in so much of the population. Even children.

Stay in the Word! That’s where we find the true picture of who God is and who we are to become through Him. We need a picture and feel of the really perfect Father and that will get us through anything we face in this life. His Word and our application of it can truly bring health to our bodies and minds.

Why Are Leading Health Practitioners Recommending High Tech, Ionic Detox Footbaths For Health

In our long history on this planet, only Man seems to have the desire to constantly change things. We convert our natural resources such as sand to glass, wood to paper and we grow food, combine seeds or grafts to create new and better types of food, we build structures and find new ways to make our lives better, faster, easier. Our never ending quest for the next best thing is unquenchable. While this can be a blessing it can also be a curse.

Before man reached the industrial age, except for some major cities, most of the earth was still clean and natural. The air was pure, the fresh water was clean and drinkable and our oceans were relatively untouched. In this state, our earth had an abundance of negative and positive ions.

Ions are atoms that have acquired an electrical charge by gaining or losing an electron. Positive ions make us feel tired, irritable and cranky. Negative ions make you feel refreshed and can dramatically improve your mood and sense of well being. What does this have to do with our health? Plenty!

Storms, water falls, rushing rivers or ocean waves all produce tens to hundreds of thousands of negative ions. Many people make vacation plans that somehow revolve around water. It could be the cottage at the beach, an island getaway, a water park or cruise. We unwittingly are drawn to places that produce negative ions. Water is not the only place these ions are produced. Forests, especially pine forests also produce these ions and promote a sense of well being.

Our ancestors walked along the beaches or crossed rushing rivers and explored the forests and lived and worked in more of a natural environment. Some of the health issues we see today were not present in our history. Chances are that if you live in a big city and spend your day in front of a computer you may be over exposed to positive ions and are in sore need of negative ions. This is where technology comes in. Ionic foot baths!

An ionic foot bath works by immersing your feet in the slightly salted water (sea salt) whereby positive and negative ions are emitted by the machine, which re-energize the body.

It is similar to walking in the sand along the beach only more powerful because your feet are in direct contact with the ions being made in the water. Water has an almost perfect balance of positive & negative ions. Since the body is composed of 70% water, its ability to interact with the water is very high. When you immerse a body mass into water, the vibration frequency of the water will affect the vibration frequency of the body due to the interaction of the magnetic & electrical field. It’s an exceptionally wonderful and natural healing tool. It is a painless, actually relaxing, process and unlike prescription drugs, there are no harmful side effects.

An overall balancing effect occurs, along with a significant increase in the number of negative ions. Ions are atoms or molecules that have lost or gained electrons [Free radicals are unpaired electrons]. If the atoms or molecules lose electrons, they become positively charged ions. If they gain electrons, they become negatively charged ions.

Health practitioners all over the country are seeing results day after day. Many customers have stated positive results in reduced menopause symptoms, menstrual cramps, sexual health problems, skin problems, acne, sleep problems, restlessness, stress, toothaches, wrinkles, aches and pains and yeast infections, as well as faster disease healing and injury recovery. For some it is a sense of well being after such a session.

Bottom line, technology can recreate what we have lost as far as a foot bath goes. When you can’t get away, restore your sense of well being with an ionic foot bath!

Naturally, The Aspect

Whether it is the front view or the interior, the aspect of a home has a direct effect on its value. The major difference lies in the additions or modifications homeowners make to their property. Renewing the kitchen appliances does not always add value since this is generally done because the old ones are obsolete or worn out.

Air Conditioning

Air conditioning and central heating will be greatly appreciated if, using our common sense, it is really applicable. In places where they are not really needed, they are not relevant to the price. I wouldn’t appreciate air conditioning in the North Pole. Would you?

The features that are really very much appreciated are additions to the covered area of the house, like a garage, a workshop next to the garage or extra bedrooms. A master suite will be something important since it will also add a bathroom. A bay window will add to the value, especially if it enhances the aspect of the façade and wooden decks also contribute to the built area of the house.

Interior

The interior can be greatly improved with a good decoration; for example, drapery and carpets. Furniture is not at all relevant, unless you plan to sell and leave the house furnished. In this case it will have to be appraised separately from the house.

Something Inevitable

Structural repairs, unfortunately are not noticed, but mean a lot to the duration of the house in good condition. These, I’m afraid, will not add value, but maintain the original one, instead.

Swimming Pool

This feature is considered as an added value to the home, if the location is in an area with warm climate all the year round and only if it is in ground. Fiberglass pools that are just placed leaning on the ground don’t count. The reason is that they can be easily taken away, whereas “in ground” means actually “built in”.

Extra Storeys

These are very important, but generally not applicable, since the structure of the house would have to be adequate from the very foundations of the building, but certainly an extra storey can add great value to property.

Great Cost

The great cost of major repairs and building extra facilities in a home make it necessary for homeowners to raise an important amount of cash, usually by means of a Home Improvement Loan, using the existing property as security or collateral. The conditions are very favorable since the type of loan is similar to a mortgage, although for a smaller amount. Therefore, the duration of the loan does not need to be as long as for a mortgage.
