I was about 10 years old when I decided to learn boxing. To say that my parents were surprised would be the understatement of the year! They had both been trying to encourage me to get more exercise for the last couple years, but I had had no interest in it. I was a bookish kid, and I preferred to stay indoors and read rather than going outside and playing with my friends. I had friends, but they were like me. We were all intellectual, shy, and not physically active. My parents could not for the life of them figure out why I wanted to learn to box.

Part of it was just my natural impulsivity. In some ways, it was as simple as one night deciding that I wanted to learn how to box. Of course, there were more complex motives lying beneath my desire to learn boxing. One of them was the fact that I was a little bit sick of being picked on at school. One kid in particular would always challenge me to fight. He was smaller than me, but much more vicious. I knew that if I could learn boxing, I could take him in a match. That way, I would have more respect at school.

I am sure that my parents suspected that this was part of my motivation for learning boxing, but nonetheless they supported me. They even bought me a boxing punching bag and gave me Junior boxing lessons. Truth be told, the desire to learn Boxing was not just about defending myself and my honor. I wanted to learn boxing because I wanted to be in shape. I wanted to look tough. I wanted people to look at me and understand that I was an unbeatable force.

Most of all, I wanted to learn something that no one else did. A lot of people in my school decided to learn martial arts - it was one of the most popular activities. Nonetheless, few of them ever tried to learn boxing. It had fallen out of favor. It was too brutal, too inelegant, and it required much more training. You could learn martial arts by training an hour or two every week, but if you wanted to learn boxing, you had to be in the gym at least three or four times each week. To me, boxing seemed like a great American sport. It turned out to be a lot of fun too!

A Piece of the Miracle - 1980 USA Hockey Team Collectibles

The 1980 USA hockey team played what could be called the most memorable game in hockey history. So significant was the game that Sports Illustrated voted it as the greatest moment in sports. It also captured the imagination of the whole nation, which at the time was reeling from the stressful 70s. It was also the game that made the chant ‘U-S-A! U-S-A!’ popular, which has since been the rallying cry in many international games. No wonder memorabilia related to the 1980 USA hockey team are very much sought-after.

Why they matter
In an era where the playing field was dominated by the Soviets, the 1980 USA hockey team were never considered a threat. It was very unlikely that the US Olympic team, composed of collegiate and amateur hockey players, could ever hope to win against the heavily-favored Soviet Union team.

Of the 12 teams that joined the competition at Lake Placid, New York, the US team was seeded 7th. Two years before the competition, the Soviet team had won against the NHL All-Stars for the Challenge Cup. The score? 6-0. In an exhibitions game in 1980, the Soviets also scored 5-3-1 against the National Hockey League teams. They were also manned by some of the most legendary hockey players in history, including team captain Boris Mikhailov and goalie Vladislav Tretiak.

Another factor that added to the excitement of the US vs. USSR game was the Cold War, where the US and the Soviet Union had an uneasy and long-standing participation. It also helped that during an exhibition match 13 days before the actual competition, the Soviet Reds defeated the Americans 10-3. A column in the New York Times said that unless a miracle is performed by the US or another team, the Soviets were expected to take home the gold medal.

But history was going to be written differently. Under the tough guidance of coach Herb Brooks and the leadership of team captain Mike Eruzione, the US team scored: the first point from Buzz Schneider, two from Mark Johnson and the last from Eruzione himself. The US team went on to win the gold medal.

A piece of the Miracle
One of the most popular 1980 USA hockey team collectible is a group-signed jersey, valued at about $1,300.00. It includes signatures from Eruzione, Craig, Johnson, Schneider, Neal Broten, Steve Christoff, Dave Silk, Phil Verchota, Mike Ramsey, Ken Morrow, Mark Pavelich and 9 other players. The jersey comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from Steiner Sports, one of the most respected and reliable authenticators of sports items and memorabilia.

Hand-signed jerseys are probably the most expensive collectibles from the 1980 US hockey team, with prices over $1000. Hockey sticks are also highly-coveted and are in the same price range.

While Mike Eruzione and Mark Johnson stirred the crowd for their scoring, it was goalie Jim Craig who bore the brunt of the Soviets’ attacks and kept them at bay through his strong defense. This makes any Craig-signed memorabilia special. An example is a Miracle on Ice puck priced at about $80 and a hand-signed photograph of Craig draped in the American flag after the US team won the gold medal against Finland. The photos are limited edition 8″ x 10″ size and comes with a COA from Grandstand Sports & Memorabilia. It is priced at $130.

Another memorable collectible from the 1980 US hockey team is a photo showing the team crowding the podium during the awards ceremony. It’s hand-signed by 20 team members and includes a certified hologram and COA. There are also hand-signed pucks by individual players that cost from $70 to $80.

Another great collectible is the reprint of the New York Times front page dated February 25, 1980 with the headline, ‘USA Hockey Victory Stirs Celebration’. This was printed 3 days after the US defeated the Soviet team and a day after they defeated Finland to win the Gold Medal. The item costs about $90.

With the help of asset finance leasing, you can access your desired product without purchasing it. In this way you can say asset finance leasing helps a company to own any asset without investing money for it from their own fund.

The Cat Lover’s Survival Guide - Book Review

Since a few cats had owned me a very long time ago, I thought I knew a thing or two about them. Although “The Cat Lover’s Survival Guide” is directed toward first-time cat owners, I still found quite a few pointers that were new to me. Among those, my favorite tip is on page 17: “How to: Make a T-shirt Cat Bed.” I also had no idea that cats could have zits at any age.

After a simple personal story with her cats in the introduction, Karen Commings, the writer, methodically sets out to inform her readers about cat care.

In Cleaning Tips, she addresses all kinds of cleaning, from cleaning after the cats to keeping things clean for kitties. Cost Saving Tips and Safety Tips are written with great care, putting the welfare of the cats first.

Then follow the Feeding Tips, Grooming Tips, Behavior Tips, and Seasonal Tips.

The final two sections are titled “Helpful Hints for Cats with Disabilities” and “Helpful Hints for Cat Owners with Disabilities.” These two sections were totally alien to me with the exception of the part on aging cats.

At the end of the book, on two pages, is a short list of pet supply sources, some of which are on the internet. Additional reading sources are also linked in each section.

“The Cat Lover’s Survival Guide” presents its material directly, without beating around the bush or filling its pages with cat stories. The information is well-organized, sectioned, and bulleted throughout, making the book an excellent reference material for any cat owner.

The book is pleasant to look at with interspersed, amusing cartoon-like drawings, and the font is large and clear enough for most anyone to read. The language of the book is clear and direct. As an example, here is an excerpt from the Grooming Tips section: “Store your cat’s grooming tools in a plastic bag with some loose catnip to make the grooming session more appealing.”

The Cat Lover’s Survival Guide has 128 pages and is in paperback with ISBN-10: 0764115766 and ISBN-13: 978-0764115769.

Karen Commings is an award-winning author, specializing in pets. A former columnist for Cat Fancy, Central Pennsylvania’s Apprise and Computers in Libraries magazines, she was a contributing editor for Pets.com and a regular contributor to http://www.Petplace.com She writes regularly for CatWatch and DogWatch, the newsletters of the Cornell University School of Veterinary Science. More than of her 400 articles, essays, poems and short stories have appeared in print. Her books are: The Dog Lover’s and Cat Lover’s Survival Guides, Helpful Hints for Solving Your Most Pesky Pet Problems, Manx Cats: A Complete Pet Owner’s Manual, The Guide to Owning a Birman Cat, The Guide to Owning an Exotic Shorthair Cat, The Guide to Owning an American Shorthair Cat, Shelter Cats, and The Shorthaired Cat: an Owner’s Guide to a Happy, Healthy Pet.

The joy and comfort of owning a cat comes with the responsibility of taking proper care of one’s pet, and in the pages of this book, an owner will find a lot of practical information. Whether used as reference or read from beginning to end, this book is a necessity for any cat lover.

How To Balance Work And Home With Out Sacrificing One For The Other

In the world of restaurant management you run into all types of people. That is what happens when you open the doors to the public. Some days are filled with ease and joy, but mostly the days are long and frustrating. Your quality of life is completely dependent on the quality of your operations. That in itself is sometimes an oxymoron. The top quality A caliber employee doesn’t want to make minimum wage all their life. Keeping them motivated and happy requires a time and energy commitment that at times takes away from your ability to run a quality operation. Don’t allow your self to get side tracked. Have a plan and work your plan. A man once said to me “a goal with out a plan is just a wish”. If your goal is to have a good quality life outside of work and you truly enjoy the restaurant business, then have a plan everyday and work the plan.
There are a number of ways to achieve your goal.

1) Staff: Staffing will solve your employee wows. Competition for hours and work will give you the ability to make the tough decisions that will eventually improve your operations and your quality of life.

2) Communication: This is a key component in any operation. Ensuring all employees, partners, and management team members are aware of changes, substitutions, additions will make daily operations run itself.

3) Consistency: Each and every member of the management team has to handle situations in the same manner. If it is disciplinary actions for tardiness, rudeness, poor work performance, what ever the situation, it has to be consistent across the board.

4) Muddy list: There can’t be any unclear expectations or messages. If there is it will and uncertainty and chaos into the mix. Thereby, causing your operations to suffer and so will your quality of life.

Finally

5)Train, Train, Train: All the knowledge and experience you have is you best weapon. Don’t be afraid to share the wealth. The better trained and the more knowledge your employees have the less dependent they become and wow your operation is on cruise control running itself. You now can manage the business and help it grow.

David Ford is a successful restaurant operator with 15 years restaurant management experience. He has run both low volume( less than $1 million) and high volume(more than $3 million) restaurants.

Determination Of Exchangeable Nitrogen In Soil

Introduction

Inorganic nitrogen primarily exists in soil as the ammonium ion (NH4+) and the Nitrate ion (NO3-) and represents less than 2% of the total nitrogen in a typical soil. The bulk of the nitrogen in soils is “fixed’ to organic molecules and is not readily available to plants. To estimate the amount of nitrogen that is available for plant growth extraction procedures have been developed and the amount of nitrogen determined under the conditions of the extraction have been termed Exchangeable Nitrogen. The amount of Ammonia or Nitrate extracted is highly dependent upon the extraction solution and over the years a 2M Potassium Chloride solution has become the extraction solution of choice. Colorimetric procedures such as the indophenol blue method for ammonium ion and the cadmium reduction method for nitrate are virtually standard for testing these potassium chloride extracts because they are not subject to interferences from common soil constituents, are extremely sensitive, and are the common automated methods used for the determination of these ions in water and wastewater.

Extraction Procedure

Place 10 grams of soil sample in a 250 milliliter wide-mouth bottle and add 100 milliliters of 2M Potassium Chloride Solution (150 g KCL/L). Stopper the bottle and shake for one hour. Allow soil to settle, filter, and perform analysis on the liquid.

Method Summary and Results

Nitrate + Nitrite Nitrogen:

Nitrate Nitrogen is reduced to nitrite by a small tubular reaction coil made from cadmium metal. The nitrite formed, in addition to any nitrite originally present is determined as an azo dye at 540 nm following a reaction with sulfanilamide and N-(1-napthyl) ethylenediamine dihydrochloride. A range of 0.2 - 10 mg/kg Nitrate + Nitrite Nitrogen can be measured.

Ammonia Nitrogen:

Ammonia Nitrogen reacts with alkaline phenol and hypochlorite to form indophenol blue in an amount that is proportional to ammonia concentration. The color is intensified with sodium nitroferricyanide and the absorbance is measured at 660 nm. Precipitation by of calcium and magnesium hydroxides is prevented by the addition of EDTA. A range of 0.2 - 50 mg/kg Ammonia Nitrogen can be measured.

Conclusion

Precision was evaluated by repetitive analysis of standard solutions. Potential interferences will vary depending upon sample matrices that are specific to each individual sample and sampling locations. An alternative buffering system used for nitrate prevents potential carryover from the EPA ammonium chloride buffer into the ammonia test.

Because eliminating toxins can help heal the digestive tract and restore healthy liver function, regular internal cleansing and detoxification is essential for those who want to achieve digestive wellness and vibrant health.

Detoxification is a total-body process that involves each of the body’s seven channels of elimination-the colon, kidneys, skin, lungs, liver, lymphatic system and blood-each of which must be supported for complete detoxification to occur. The following are some of the most effective ways in which you can facilitate total-body cleansing and detoxification.

Dietary changes. Adhering to dietary guidelines is a very important part of detoxification. Toxins cannot be eliminated while they continue to enter the body. Because the kidneys are unable to function properly without sufficient water intake, drinking plenty of water during a cleanse is a necessity. Consuming a high-fiber diet that includes plenty of fruit, vegetables, legumes, nuts and whole grains is also important. That is because fiber helps to absorb and eliminate toxins as it passes through the digestive tract.

Herbal cleansing programs. The use of herbs for internal cleansing may have begun with the Sumerians nearly 5,000 years ago. Likewise, many ancient cultures relied on herbs as their only medicine. Although there are countless herbs with medicinal properties, approximately 25 are used regularly for cleansing and detoxification. The fall into one of two categories-those used for purification and those used for revitalization. Purification herbs are used to purge the organ systems. Revitalizing herbs help soothe and strengthen the organs.

Saunas, steam baths. The skin-the body’s largest organ-eliminates waste via perspiration. Heat causes toxins to be released from the cells into the lymphatic fluid. Because sweat is manufactured from lymphatic fluid, the toxins from the lymph are released when the body perspires. Saunas (dry heat) or steam baths (wet heat) create sweat intentionally to help release toxins from the skin.

Colon hydrotherapy. Another way in which the colon can support the elimination process is through colon hydrotherapy. Hydrotherapy is water therapy, and colon hydrotherapy then is the therapeutic application of water into the colon. In contrast to a traditional enema, colon hydrotherapy involves repeated infusions of filtered, warm water into the colon. Many patients have been able to overcome chronic constipation problems through colon hydrotherapy. Unlike chemical laxatives, which may encourage dependency, colon hydrotherapy actually helps to tone the bowel so that it resumes normal function.

Nutrient supplementation. Supplementing the diet with extra vitamins and minerals, particularly those with antioxidant properties (vitamins A, C, E and the minerals selenium and zinc) and B vitamins, may prove beneficial. A multivitamin and mineral supplement may be used to support the body as it purges toxic chemicals.

Exercise and deep breathing.

Exercise is an important part of the detoxification process. Breathing deeply helps eliminate toxins from the cells, and since the lymphatic system is actually part of the immune system, it can also help enhance immunity.

Mastering Email Marketing

Affiliate marketers depend upon having their marketing emails opened, read, and acted upon. Unless those three things happen, the affiliate marketer will pretty much be out of the affiliate marketing business.

If you are formatted your email correctly and it is readable in all email programs, then you just need to be certain that you have done everything possible to encourage the recipients to:

Open the email: The subject line is one of the two determining factors of whether an email is in fact opened or sent unopened and unread to the deleted mail file of the recipient. The first factor is who the email is from. Since the recipient opted into your list, it is fair to assume that they want to get email from you. The second factor is the subject line.

Most autoresponders allow 50 character long subject lines. Only the first 25 or less have any real value. You must use those 25 words to entice the recipient into opening the email to see what you have to say.

Personalize the email in the subject line. Your autoreponder will allow you to do this. “John, you can save money and get a free gift!” is much more effective than just, “You can save money and get a free gift!” So first, personalize your subject line.

The word, “free” has been maligned but do not believe everything you hear. People like free. Everybody likes free….poor people, middle class people and maybe especially rich people.

There are other words that have proven to be effective in subject lines as well. Ease or easy, magic or magical, are some of them. You must use some mystery and some tease in your subject line, in order to get the recipients to open them.

Read the email: Once the recipient has been convinced to open the marketing email from you, the next trick is to get them to read what you have to say. The problem is that most computer users do not in fact READ anything. They SCAN. So it is up to you to get them to actually slow down and really read what you have to say.

The email must be interesting. If you can start with a story….and I’m not talking about a novel…I am talking about a two line story, you can get their attention. “Bill thought of himself as a loser until he tried our product.” This is a story.

You must include bullet points in order to make your marketing email easy to read. You do not ever want to include large blocks of text. Short simple bulleted points that list the advantages that your product can provide will make it easy for the recipients to see the important facts as a glance.

Act on the email: Once you have convinced the recipients to open and read your marketing email, the next step is to get them to actually act on your suggestions you have made, (i.e. buy what you are selling).

The first thing you need to do is to make the link for ordering your product or service easy to see. Remember to never word-wrap links. All email programs don’t deliver email with word wrapped links. All the recipient will see is the word…the link will not be included.

The second thing to do is to either make the offer for a specific limited time (midnight on Thursday, November 30th) and not just say “limited time” or to limit the offer to a specific number of people (this offer is limited to the first 200 applicants) and not just limited space is available.

Common Mistakes People Make when Writing Promo Emails:
There are at least as many ways to do a promotional email wrong as there are ways to get it right. One of the first mistakes that affiliate marketers make when writing their promo emails is that they…

Lose sight of the objective: The ONLY objective of a marketing email is to sell the product or service that you are promoting to the members of your opt-in list. Every word of the email needs to be directed at realizing that one objective.

See their list as email addresses: An opt-in list is much more than a list of names and email addresses. It is a list of people! Real, live, human people are what make up your opt-in list. You must market your product or service to humans and not email addresses.

Fail to provide themselves with the right tools for the job: If you are painting a room, you need paintbrushes, paint rollers, drop cloths, etc. If you are send promotional emails, you need the right tools for the job, as well.

Use weak and ineffective subject lines: Most auto responders allow you to use up to 50 characters in a subject line. The first 25 of those characters are what stands between the marketer and an email that actually opened and read. (The second 25 should be left on the table.) If marketing emails are deleted without being read, they are totally useless. Writing powerful, attention-getting subject lines that inspire recipients to open your marketing emails is an ability that needs to be developed to a high degree of expertise.

Effective subject lines are short, to the point, have a tease quality and never promise more than what will be delivered in the attached marketing email.

Use all capital letters: The use of all capital letters in any kind of email is the equivalent of shouting or yelling at a person that you are having a real world conversation with. It is rude and completely unproductive. Do not yell at the members of your opt-in list. All capital letters do not draw attention nor convey excitement.

Use a lot of exclamation points: One exclamation point at the end of a sentence means that the sentence is an exclamatory one. Multiple exclamation points at the end of a sentence are another form of yelling and they do not denote added excitement. They are taking up valuable space in your marketing email and maybe even irritating the recipients.

Never use bullet points: It is a known fact that people do not read marketing emails word for word. People scan marketing emails. Marketing emails need to be easy to SCAN. The use of bullet points makes it easy for recipients to easily identify the important information that is contained in the email. You should always use bullet points for the main points that you are making in your marketing email.

Make their emails too long: Marketing emails should be short. They shouldn’t have a scroll bar and they should only be 300 to 400 words long. They should never contain large blocks of text. It will not be read.

Fail to use the P.S. line effectively: The P.S. line(s) of a marketing email appear last but they are as important as the first word of a marketing email. The P.S. line needs to be used to hit the most important aspect of the email again or as a tease for an upcoming email.

Email marketing is a critical element for any successful internet marketing. Take time to learn these specific tips and they will pay you back 100 fold!
