Green Tea Protects Against Cancer

Green tea’s anti-cancer properties make it one of the most valuable foods and many scientific studies point to its preventive effects against cancer of the breast, prostate, lung, colon, bladder and others.

One of the most important reasons that green tea exhibits such good health promoting properties is that it is endowed with a large number of antioxidant compounds. Of these, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the most important and is unique to green tea.

However these compounds have beneficial effects in addition to those provided by their antioxidant properties. Other non-antioxidant compounds in green tea make a significant contribution to its cancer preventing properties through anti-inflammatory and other properties.

One of the few placebo controlled clinical studies to look at the effects of green tea on cancer was carried out on men who had early cancer of the prostate gland. After one year, only 3% of those taking green tea extract showed evidence of disease progression while 30% of those in the placebo-taking control group had developed signs of more advanced disease.

A couple of other very recent studies have thrown up some interesting results that show why green tea helps prevent cancer in some people and not in others.

EGCG and other catechin flavonoids, although abundant in green tea, are vulnerable to metabolic breakdown once they have entered the blood stream. The enzyme responsible for the metabolism of green tea is more active in some people than in others. The difference in enzyme activity is governed by an individual’s genetic make up.

Individuals whose genes code for high enzyme activity metabolize EGCG and other compounds in green tea more rapidly than those with genes that code for low enzyme activity. A consequence of the greater enzymatic activity of those in the first group is a reduced bioavailability of EGCG compared to those in the second group.

A survey of green tea drinkers found that women who are in the second, low-enzyme activity group derived considerable protection against breast cancer. While those women who fell into the high enzyme activity group failed to derive any protective benefits against breast cancer as their bodies destroyed the EGCG before it could do any good.

The increased activity of a well known peptide in the body, angiotensin II has been implicated in the production of free radicals that, in turn, aggravate the formation of breast cancer.

Angiotensin II is converted from its precursor by angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). Women who have a genome that codes for high ACE activity produce more angiotensin II than those whose genotypes code for low ACE activity. The raised levels of angiotensin II that are associated with higher than normal levels of ACE, are responsible for the production of cancer-causing free radicals.

A recent survey found that those women who have the high activity ACE genotype derive substantial protection against breast cancer if they drink green tea regularly.

The reason is that EGCG and other antioxidant compounds in green tea neutralize the increased numbers of free radicals produced by those women who, because of their genetic make up, have higher than normal levels of ACE and therfore higher than normal levels of free radical-producing angiotensin II.

Drinking four to six cups of tea day is unlikely to cause any adverse effects and provides adequate quantities of EGCG and other polyphenols. However caffeine-free green tea is obtainable for those who avoid drinking beverages containing caffeine. To optimize the beneficial effects of green tea it should be taken between meals. The reason being that EGCG has a higher bioavailability when green tea is taken on an empty stomach.

As with many other valuable plant species, green tea has shown that its principal value to human health is as a preventive rather than a curative agent.

The research into this important beverage has also demonstrated how phytochemicals in our diets can compensate for deficiencies in our genetic make up. Scientific research into other important plant foods indicates that many phytonutrients can even protect those individuals who have genes that make them susceptible to certain cancers.

Some of the evidence presented here shows that green tea does not necessarily help to prevent cancer in everyone who drinks it. It does not mean, however, that compounds in other plants will not do so. As our genomes differ from one person to another, so do our individual responses to disease, food and drugs. In order to maximize the health benefits that plant compounds can provide, we need to drink green tea and other beneficial beverages and eat a wide range of phytonutrient-rich plant foods.

Belize Casinos

Anyone that has ever been to Belize knows that it is a truly magnificent place with things to see and do that cannot be seen or done anywhere else in the world. While there are some very unique things to see and do in the area, there is one thing that the people of Belize love as much as anywhere else in the world and that is gambling. There is not a wide selection of Belize casinos, but since casinos are the only legal place to gamble in the country, there is no doubt that more will open in the future. As the popularity of the two that are already in Belize spreads, the demand will likely prove to be the reason why other casinos open somewhere in the country.

Currently, there are two Belize casinos to visit. First, there is the Princess Hotel and Casino Belize located in Belize City. When this casino opened, the public was overwhelmed with excitement, since before the opening only a couple of slot machine facilities were in existence. Tourists visiting the area always make a stop at the Princess Hotel and Casino, because it is very popular and highly recommended. In addition to the casino in Belize City, there is The Palace Casino, which is located in Ambergris Caye. The slot machine facilities that were mentioned above are also located in Ambergris Caye, making this the gambling capital of Belize! Though hardly overflowing with gambling possibilities, when in the area, tourists will want to stop at The Palace Casino to test their combination of luck and skill.

For the people who are residents of Belize and don’t live near either Belize City or Ambergris Caye, there are still have some gambling resources. The Internet is a huge lifesaver for those that like to gamble, but cannot get to the brick and mortar establishments. Of course, Internet gambling is considered illegal by some and legal by others, but a lot of people take part in the online fun, because gambling is not available anywhere else that is as convenient. While the brick and mortar establishments can provide real excitement and fun in the way of poker, blackjack, roulette, and slots, the Internet does provide great entertainment for those who can’t get to the land-based casinos. Belize casinos are not that common, but the two that are in business make up for the lack of quantity with quality.

Protect Yourself From Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a common disease. In America, it affects approximately one in nine. That works out to 28 million people, with of them being women over middle age. While some bone loss is inevitable as we age, there are precautions we can take to protect our bones and reduce bone loss and the risk of developing osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a disease in which the bones become weak or brittle and are much more prone to breaking. If not prevented or treated, it can lead to easily broken bones, especially that of the wrist, hips and spine.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 90 percent of American women are calcium deficient on a daily basis. Being deficient in calcium puts you at risk for gum disease, menstrual cramping, depression, insomnia and down the road it can lead to osteoporosis. So it is clearly important for us to be aware of how much Calcium we eat. We need to try and eat more foods rich in calcium and add calcium to the diet as supplements.

Some of the foods which are rich in calcium are dairy products of nearly all kinds, greens such as turnip, bock choy, mustard and broccoli, oysters, blackstrap molasses, almonds and even some mineral waters.

It is important to note that some of the foods we eat have natural inhibitors to Calcium absorption. Foods like spinach, sorrel, rhubarb, and dandelion greens contain oxalic acid which binds to calcium to form calcium oxalate, which is indigestible.

Grains can also interfere with calcium absorption. Phytic acid is found in grains and this is a phophoruslike compound that combines with calcium in the intestines and blocks its absorption. Most people do not need to worry too much about this unless you are eating a very high carbohydrate diet.

There are also nutrients that will enhance the absorption of calcium. Magnesium helps with calcium metabolism and in transporting calcium in to bones and soft tissues. Magnesium is also important for preventing calcium oxalate crystals from forming which is what kidney stones are made from.

There are also vitamins which are important for calcium absorption. Vitamin C is one calcium enhancer. But more importantly, Vitamin D is vital for calcium being transformed into a usable form by increasing calcium absorption in the small intestines and retention by the kidneys.

There are trace elements that enhance calcium absorption. Boron maintains calcium and magnesium levels by aiding the body in it’s synthesize with both estrogen and vitamin D. Silicon is also important. Silicon helps to support calcium in the maintenance and growth of bones and joints.

Estrogen plays an integral role in the body’s use of calcium. Estrogen both increases calcium absorption and decreases its urinary excretion.

Exercise is one of the most important things that can be done to reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Bones grow stronger with physical stress. Weight bearing exercise is the most important form of exercise to protect your bones. A study by the Mayo Clinic found that women who exercise twice a week have denser bones than those who exercise once a week, which in turn have denser bones than those who never exercise at all. Even sedentary postmenopausal women increased bone mass by 5 percent after nine months of an exercise program and a high-calcium diet.

We can conclude that if you want protect your bones, exercise and proper diets and supplements will be important for your health. Choosing the right supplement can be difficult with so many products out there. Many experts believe that postmenopausal women need up to 1,500 mg of calcium daily. When looking for a calcium supplement look for one that is also high in magnesium. You will also want to either find one with Vitamin D already in it, or take a separate D at a minimum of 400 I.U.

Isn’t it now time that you take action and prevent yourself from the risks of osteoporosis? Consult your physician for advice on starting an exercise plan if you are not already doing so. And look for a quality calcium/magnesium supplement to protect your bones so that you can enjoy a healthy, active life in your later years.

The Major Aspects of Resurrection

And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. (1 Corinthians 15:14)

Take the Resurrection out of Christianity and you have not Christianity ! Resurrection is the essence of Christian faith.

The apostle Paul is talking in 1 Corinthians 15 about the importance of Resurrection and about the major aspects of the Christian faith that are affected by Jesus’ Resurrection.

The first aspect of the Resurrection is the historical aspect. Resurrection is not a fairy tale, but a historical reality! This aspect was proved by Jesus’ friends and was proved by Jesus’ enemies. Starting more than 2000 years ago people are still believing and are ready to die to prove this truth.

In spite of the fact that there are many enemies that are trying to deny and to bring doubt about this reality, Resurrection of Christ is a proved historical fact and His church is the best prove of this.

The second aspect of Jesus’ Resurrection is the soteriological aspect. Soteriology is the doctrine of Salvation.

Paul is stating very clear, without Jesus’ Resurrection there is not salvation, we are lost and our sins are still pressing over us. Without Jesus’ Resurrection there is not righteousness (Romans 4:25). Without Jesus’ Resurrection there is not a Good News, there is not a Gospel of forgiveness.

His Resurrection was prophesized by the prophets of the Old Testament and by Jesus Himself. Jesus’ Resurrection is the Father’s approval for His ministry, suffering and death. Without Resurrection, Jesus’ suffering for us would have been in vain.

The third aspect of Jesus’ Resurrection is the empirical aspect. When I’m saying empirical I mean touchable or practical aspect.

This aspect is answering to the today’s practical question: “How Jesus’ Resurrection is affecting me now in April 2007?”

The apostle Paul is talking about the fact that all the people who don’t know Jesus as Lord and Savior are dead in their iniquities and sins. When we come from darkness to the light we are RESURRECTED or we experience METANOIA the changing, the renewing of our mind (Romans ch. 6, Romans 12:1).

In other words we are experiencing the Resurrection here and now, we become a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). We are not perfect, but we are a new person.

The apostle Paul is talking about experiencing the power of Jesus’ Resurrection and this is what we receive when we believe and when we live as a true witness of the Resurrection.

The fourth aspect of Jesus’ Resurrection is the eschatological aspect. Eschatology is the doctrine about the end times.

Jesus’ Resurrection is pointing to the time when our physical body we’ll be resurrected and transformed too. Actually, this is one of the most comforting thoughts that we have when we are facing death, this is our hope: THE RESURRECTION.

The apostle Paul is talking here about another future aspect that will involve Resurrection, and this is JUDGMENT. He says that all people will be resurrected, but some to receive their reward and some to receive their punishment.

These are only few major aspects of Jesus’ Resurrection, and this should be enough to make us understand how important is this for us and for our eternal destiny.

We still have the time to change our life and to expect Resurrection with hope and to enjoy our eternity with our Lord. If you’re reading this and you don’t believe in Jesus’ Resurrection you have to know that you’re lost and hopeless, but still you have the great chance to experience God’s love NOW.

Because of the strong commercial aspect of our society, the Easter became like a second hand holiday, with rabbits and eggs. I hope that this words we’ll help us understand how important is this event for our faith, for our lives and for our eternal destiny.

A Business Exit Plan can have a number of different connotations. You may hear it referred to as a Succession Plan.

At Superb Coaching we have taken a deliberate stance in focussing on the ‘EXIT’ because we are dealing with the business owner’s plan to remove themselves from the business. Yes, there are issues around succession management that we address however we feel that the Exit Plan needs to address more than just succession.

Your Business Exit Plan should deliver the following objectives:

1) To maximising the capital realisation from the transfer of ownership

2) To achieve this realisation in a reasonable time frame

3) To minimise the risks as consequence of change or during the period of change

In a survey conducted by the Australian CPA in 2004, it was found of business owners gave the following reasons for undertaking a plan.

  • Age (21%)
  • New business opportunities (11%)
  • Forward planning/looking to the future (11%)
  • Good business practice/logic/common sense (9%)
  • Succession/business for children/need it to continue (8%)
  • Wanted to make more money / opportunity to grow (7%)
  • View to retirement (6%)
  • Wanted to sell out/been in it too long (5%)
  • Wanted to get it right this time/needed direction (3%)
  • Need time with family/death in family (2%)
  • Low business performance (2%)
  • The work overload (2%)
  • Family break-up (2%)
  • GST too much/taxation purposes (1%)
  • Illness (1%)
  • No real reason (5%)

In other research conducted in the UK, a number of leading factors were identified as contributing to SMB exit failure. These included.

· Businesses with lifestyle and personal rather than strategic goals

· Poor business performance

· Managerial dependence on owner

· Ignoring the need to make arrangements for exiting

In Australia we have some 40% of SMB’s totally dependent on the owner.

So what are your options for exiting the business?

The following were found as being the most appealing by SMB owners themselves.

  1. Sell or pass on to a child or another family member (25%)
  2. A trade sale to someone in the industry (19%)
  3. Sell to management or staff (7%)
  4. Advertise the business for sale without identifying a buyer (26%)
  5. Close the business and sell the assets (17%)
  6. Don’t know (5%)

Most interestingly, if we compare the above same list where the business owner was advised by a professional we observe the following preferences.

  1. Advertise the business for sale without identifying a buyer (43%)
  2. Sell or pass on to a child or another family member (30%)
  3. A trade sale to someone in the industry (17%)
  4. Sell to management or staff (3%)
  5. Close the business and sell the assets (3%)
  6. Don’t know (4%)

Of significance is the fact that 43% of owners surveyed planned for an on-going income stream from the business after exit. This is a double-edged sword.

Not only do owners want to maximise the value of the sale value, but they are also looking for an income stream to support their future lifestyle.

It becomes apparent that apart from the broad range of matters that need to be addressed, maximising the value of the business is paramount to anyone considering exiting from their business.

The experience of Australian CPA’s has found that the barriers to SMB’s maximising business valuation included:

· The business is too dependent on the owner

· The business costs are too high

· Out-of-date technology

· Processes are not documented

· The business owner is not prepared to commit time preparing for a sale

· A lack of potential buyers

· The business does not achieve a reasonable return

· The owner has unrealistic expectations about the value of the business

So what can You do to maximise the value of your business and any on-going income stream you might be looking for?

You need to develop your Business Exit Plan ensuring that it is integrated into your business’ strategic plans. You need to involve yourself, your family and your staff. Most importantly, you need to plan ahead.

At Superb Coaching we focus on implementing 7 Key Strategies for our clients.

1. PLANNING
We firstly ensure that our clients have a current Business Plan that is being actioned. We then address the matter of the Business Exit Plan.

2. STRUCTURE
Does your business have the right structure supported by a culture of leadership and team development fostering the business objectives?

3. FUNCTIONALITY
Do you have the right people sitting in the right seats on the right bus? Are lines of responsibility clearly defined and followed? Does the business have points of individual dependence?

4. SYSTEMS
Are the business systems supporting the operations? Are they effectively utilised and do they work in with the business processes? Are there effective performance measurement systems in place?

5. PROCESSES
Are the systems and processes appropriately documented? Are the business policies and procedures up to date and understood by the staff?

6. DISTRIBUTION
Does your business effectively apply relationship management to select partner businesses for building your customer base? Are there opportunities to attract better qualified customers and increase turnover?

7. POSITIONING
Your success in the market will be driven by the market’s perception of what your business is really about. Acknowledgement of your position can only be achieved by ensuring that your business is totally aligned to this position in everything it does.

Yes, profit, turnover, financial ratios and asset value are critical as well, but these generally are what are referred to as “lagging indicators”. They only tell you about what has happened in the past, the history of the business.

To maximise your business value, you should also pay attention to demonstrating the “future” potential of the business. This is achieved by measuring “leading indicators“.

Adopt the 7 Key Strategies and you can be assured that you will be delivering to the future potential of your business.

Now your business is really appealing to a potential investor or buyer. They have assurance over past performance and confidence in future capacity.

Here is the main reason:

How about because your crazy if you don’t start a small business. Whoa don’t leave yet. Let me explain. In most countries all expenses relating to a small business are tax deductible such as office space (yes even at home), auto (gas, tires, lease, maintenance, insurance, etc) phone, computer, printer, scanner, digital camera. With most tax systems equipment can be depreciated and this includes your vehicle. Business lunches and accommodations while traveling and more. Each area and local is different but one phone call to a local accountant or book keeper will clarify what is applicable to your area.

I have a saying; “IT’S NOT WHAT YOU MAKE - IT’S WHAT YOU KEEP THAT COUNTS”, are you starting to get the picture? Most households are stuck in the system. Two pay cheques coming in, let us say $25,000 each for a total house hold income of $50,000. Let us assume a 30% tax bracket. No expenses to claim so 30%= $15,000 deducted and sent to the government each year. This would leave $35,000 to live on for the year. Now let us assume there are two children and day care costs at $100 a week. Say Mom takes 2 weeks vacation a year that leaves 50 weeks at $100= $5000. Now we are down to $30,000. Now let us assume Mom has to travel a second car to get to work. $100 a week car lease and $100 a week gas=$200 a week x 50 weeks = $10,000. Now you are down to $20,000 left to come and go on. I could continue with an assumed mortgage or rent payment, the cost of Hubby’s car and so on but it’s easy to see how you can make $50,000 and still have no money.

What are the advantages of owning a small business?

This answer is simple. To reduce your taxable income. Remember what I said previously “IT’S NOT AS IMPORTANT WHAT YOU MAKE AS IT IS WHAT YOU KEEP.” This is the secret of the wealthy. The main difference between the 10% that have the money and the 90% that don’t. They make the system work for them instead of them working for the system. Starting your own small business is the first step in moving from the 90% to the 10%. No it doesn’t happen over night. But if you keep doing what you’re doing nothing changes in your life. Moving from the 90% towards the 10% requires making some changes. Starting your own small business is the first step.

Let us look at our example household under different circumstances. Let us say they’ve worked a few years part time and established a home based business making $12,000 per year. Mom or Dad now stays at home. The other spouse still brings in $25,000. Total income $37,000 minus $5,000 in business expenses (the family has taken a few trips promoting the business together) =$32,000 in taxable income at a reduced rate of 20%=$6400 in taxes =$25,600 in disposable income. No daycare, no second car, someone always home with the kids and less stress. Not a get rich scheme but 90% of the millionaires started with a small business in North America. Could you be one of them? Oh and by the way if you’re household income is $100,000 + you need the tax breaks more than the $50,000 household.

Sounds good but I know nothing about business. Where would I start?

Remember that’s what this article is all about, helping you beat the system based on my 30 years experience and helping you find a niche that you would enjoy based on my years of trial and error. There are lots of opportunities that work but it has to be something you would enjoy and can start part time with out a lot of up front investment. The first step is to take an honest assessment of your own skills and abilities. Every achievement only comes with an honest work ethic and the ability to learn. You also have to make a commitment to that project. You will also require the self discipline to work with out a boss. Many employees have a problem with that. You may have to change your whole mind set from employee to entrepreneur.

The best book ever written to help you do that is “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. I have that book as an e book and will send it to you for free, just email me at staff@easthants.com with subject line “e book”. The primary purpose of this article is to motivate you to make a change in your life. Success only comes with change. You can be successful. You need to understand the system, how it works and realize, IT’S NOT WHAT YOU MAKE BUT WHAT YOU KEEP THAT COUNTS.

What Is The Best Home Based Business?

So what is the best home based business? There are many home based business opportunities out in the market but I strongly believe that the best home based business is one that is suitable for you, meet your objective and situation.

For example, if you want to make money with low start-up cost, while spending more time at home with your family, you might look at home based Internet business. Alternatively, if you have a hobby that can also make you money, you might look into that as well. Of course there are many options for you, but do note that there are many scams as well, so beware!

The criteria for the best home based business in my dictionary are:

1. Low start-up cost

2. Low risk

3. Allows more time freedom

4. High potential income

Sounds impossible? It is possible, in fact such legitimate business exist since the rise of the Internet. And it is called Affiliate Marketing.

Affiliate marketing is basically selling other people’s product online via the Internet. This simply means that you can make money even if you do not have your own website or product. All you need to do is simply to drive traffic to the merchants’ website and they will do the rest for you. This saves you massive time and makes you money in double quick time.

Just mastering the art of traffic generation alone can make you tons of money online. Driving traffic is very easy, you can be writing articles, participating in forum discussion, emailing to people and even doing paid advertising.

Imagine for a while, you register as an affiliate for a personal development program, you watched a motivational video by Les Brown and wrote a review article on it after that. You submit your article to a few article directories and it got picked up and published in many more websites. Your article got tons of exposure which in turn directed people who are interested in your article to the merchant’s website you mentioned in your author bio box.

They went to the merchant’s website, like it and subscribe to it. If they did not subscribe the first time round and just opt-in by putting they name and email, the merchant will follow up with them and entice them to subscribe. Congratulation! You get paid every month when someone subscribes and all you did is simply writing an article and driving traffic to the merchant’s website. Isn’t that easy?

Now, that is the best home based business for me, but what is the best home based business that you think is for you?

Great Bedroom Decorating Ideas And Tips

Most of us can not afford to have a professional decorator design new rooms every time we tire of the decor. Usually, it’s not the furniture that we tire of, but what is on and around our carefully chosen furniture. It’s usually accent pieces, drapes, or simply the color of the walls that lose their freshness, causing us to get bored with the whole room and have an itch to redecorate. Here is an idea which is simple, inexpensive and makes that room’s appeal last much longer. This applies to any room, but has particular usefulness as a bedroom decorating idea.

Our bedrooms are the private rooms in our homes, and we spend quiet times, just waking up and sipping coffee, reading or talking to our spouse. We come to associate relaxing feelings with the bedroom. When we want to relax and enjoy kicking back, we do not want to look around and say, “Oh, I can not stand this bedspread any more!” We want our bedroom to be inviting, not boring. You might think that bedroom decorating ideas come with a premium price tag, requiring a complete makeover to freshen the look. The truth is, bedroom decorating ideas can be as simple as a change of throw pillows and some new lamp shades. A new set of curtains can change the whole mood of the bedroom.

These bedroom decorating ideas require that you start with squinting your eyes and looking around the room. Really! Squint your eyes slightly and cast your gaze around the room. Take different vantage points. Lie on the bed. Stand in the doorway. What is the first thing that catches your critical eye? Is it that old picture you are fond of, but tired of looking at? Your bedspread is pretty, but you have had it for years. In other words, find what weighs your eye down. There may be several things, but chances are, it is not the furniture.

You love that picture, but it’s been hanging there so long it’s become part of the wall. Relocate the picture to another room where it once again becomes a surprise to your eyes. If your bedspread is the offender, it’s time to pack it away for guest bedding and buy a new one. Now imagine. What color or fabric would please you in it’s place? Aha! you say. I want a deep blue velvet bedspread, and now that I think of it, some ivory lace curtains would be luxurious.

You are getting the gist of these types of bedroom decorating ideas now. Restrain yourself, as it’s easy to get carried away. These bedroom decorating ideas succeed when you aim for simplicity. Maybe a simple coat of paint or stained wooden louvers replacing curtains are all you need. Your beige lampshades might be changed for hand painted art deco ones for an entirely different look in the room in which you love to relax.

Interview Preparation - 5 Steps for a Successful Interview

Once you get the call for the interview, the next thing that you have to do is prepare for it. Following are a 5 steps for a successful interview:

    (1) Do your research - It doesn’t matter how much knowledge or experience you have about the position that you are trying to get in a company if you don’t have a clue who the company is or what they do. It is disastrous to enter into an interview and not be able to tell your interviewer what their company is about. How else are you going to tell them why you feel that you would be a good addition to their company? A good and less time consuming way to get to know about a company is to look up their website. You can gather general knowledge, including the names of key people and their job titles. You should sift through most of their pages, including the pages that show samples of their work and/or products.

    (2) Know your contact - When called for an interview, ask to whom you will be talking to. It is nice to be able to greet your interviewer by name at the beginning of the interview without first being told who they are. It shows that you are on top of things, and have prepared before hand. You will also want to do some research on the person that will be conducting your interview. Learn what they do for the company and try to get some samples of their work or achievements in the company. If you know what department that you are going to work in you may want to get the names of your potential colleagues and superiors prior to the interview as well. This way you can get some information about their roles in the company and the types of work that they have done. Mention some of the things that you learned about your potential colleagues in the interview and about how much you look forward to working with them in the future. If you can, give an example of their work so that you will appear more sincere.

    (3) Practice your responses - If you are prone to nervousness, practice giving your responses to the questions that may be asked of you. Practice your wording and tone. Keep your responses as brief as possible but with as much detail as you can. When you are trying to work out the proper responses to the interviewer’s questions, you will also want to practice the art of getting your nerves under control as well as ridding yourself of any other odd habits while talking; like expressing yourself with your hands. Practice answering your interview questions with a friend. Get his or her opinion about your delivery and gestures.

    (4) Dress the part - Pre-select your attire the day before your interview. Make sure your clothes do not have any wrinkles or stains on them. Pick an outfit that best suits the type of job you are applying for. If you are going to work in an office setting, dress conservatively. Soft earth tones are best for women. A nice dark suit is good for a male. Of course if you are planning to work outdoors or in an artistic environment, you can dress a little more casually. Just avoid wearing denim jeans, over-sized or under-sized clothing.

    (5) Get organized - Prepare for your interview the day before. Make a checklist, if need be. Have an extra resume handy during the interview and bring a note pad to take notes. If you have a business card, have one handy since it makes for easy contact later, and it also shows that you are professional and may help the employer to remember your name.

Use these tips to prepare for an interview as you can never over-prepare for one!

Why is this important

Getting everyone together for a family portrait is not easy, and as your children get older it becomes more and more difficult. So after you’ve gone through all that trouble, you want to hire a professional who will get it right, the first time. The moment in time you’ve worked to create will not come again.

Look carefully at the Portfolio on the website
Next to a face to face meeting, which is also necessary, this is a good way to determine if the photographer is the right one for you. There are certain clues, or red flags, which should tell you right away whether to call this photographer, or to keep looking.

NATURAL POSING: Are the people in the photo in natural, comfortable positions, or are the bodies manipulated into contrived and forced positions? Is the posing sloppy? For example, are some peoples’ heads clearly seen while others are partially hidden behind another person? A photographer’s skill at posing is especially important when dealing with large groups.

EXPRESSIONS: Do the people in the photo look happy and relaxed, and do their expressions match. Most important, is there life in the eyes. Do these peoples’ personalities come through, or are they just sitting there getting their picture taken. A good photographer will watch intensely as he shoots to make sure he is getting the best expressions possible.

CLOTHING: Do the people in the photo look completely unrelated by their clothing, or does the photo clearly show that planning went into coordinating everyone’s attire.

CREATING MOOD: Are there examples of photos that show the photographers skill in creating different moods using studio light and natural outdoor light. For example in a moody portrait you’ll see rich shadows on one side of the peoples’ faces.

PROFESSIONAL LIGHTING: You can tell if the photographer is an amateur or a professional by how consistent the lighting is. Are the people in the back row too dark and in shadow, and the people in the front row too bright? While we’re looking at consistency, are some heads small and far away, while others are big and close?

VARIETY: Are there several photos of the same person on the website that look almost identical. This is a red flag. If such a photographer says he’ll shoot 30 photos, he will probably shoot 30 photos that look PRETTY MUCH the same. A good photographer has imagination and will come prepared beforehand with a number of “looks” for you to choose from.

OUTDOOR SCENERY: Is the background and foreground integrated. For example, if there are trees in the background do they grown out of the subjects’ heads or are they placed harmoniously in the composition.

STUDIO BACKGROUNDS: Does the photographer use strongly coloured and gimmicky backgrounds that distract from the subject, or neutral ones that complement the subject.
Viewing the Portfolio on the website is a good indication of the final (unchangeable) images you will end up hanging on your walls.

Questions to ask the photographer
A studio should provide you with a face to face consultation so you can determine if you and the photographer are right for each other. This is the time for you to share your
vision of the ultimate family portrait, and for other family members to give their input too. This is also a time for the photographer to share with you a variety of themes you may not have thought of (studio, portraits in the park, lifestyle themed portraits). Most important, this is a time to find out your likes and dislikes and the things that are most important to you.

LOCATION SCOUTING: Once you have selected a location, will the photographer visit the location beforehand to determine the best lighting and camera angles.

WARDROBE SELECTION: Will the photographer give you a thorough understanding of what works and doesn’t work when dressing for a family portrait.

DISPLAY OPTIONS: Will the photographer go over final display options with you in the studio, showing you sizes, frames and finishes available.

BUDGET: Will the photographer find out your budget, or price range, so he offers you proposals that are right for you.

GUARANTEE: Will the studio refund your money or retake the photo session if you are not completely satisfied with the results.
