Live Poker - Pros and Cons of Participating in a Tournament

If you have had enough of playing poker with friends or with playing it online and winning some money and then losing some money to only win that money back again, then you have reached the stage in your poker playing experience where you need to start entering live tournaments. That is the real deal. No more long hours in front of the computer, no more feeling guilty for taking your friends’ money: you are now ready to turn pro.

But, before you do, here are a few things you must consider:
1) One of the big differences of playing in a tournament is that you need to pick you hands carefully. Spend most of your time throwing your cards away at the right beginning. If you see that your cards won’t amount to much, fight the urge to exchange most of them, and just hand them all in. This is what most tournament players do anyway. If you don’t believe me, watch the others play.

2) Money you take with you to tournaments lasts for a much lengthier period than when playing with friends or online. This is one of the advantages of not playing every hand you are dealt. (Hint: You should do the same thing when playing with friends even though that then becomes boring.)

3) Do not sit to the left of the dealer. Ensure that there are at least two players between the dealer and the players to the left. Why? Only the first 2 players seated on the left of the dealer have to place the ante. Since, most of the tournaments involve ten players on each table, you save this much each time you play. This also means that each hand that you fold will mean that you have spent only half that of the lower limit. This amounts to three dollars in a two to four dollar rake tournament.

4) Take into consideration that the mere fact that you are away from home means that you will spend money on food and drinks. Try and get your own, but in any case keep it light.

5) Tournament dealers are not paid much, and so it’ general practice to give them about three percent of whatever you win. Consider that all gambling halls and poker rooms also take a certain percentage but at least this comes from the money you win and so you don’t feel it.

6) One of the other advantages of playing in a tournament is that you can use more money than you had. For instance, for a hundred dollar sit-in, many casinos and poker rooms will give you about five hundred in tournament chips to bet with.

7) If high odds and high risk is not what you are looking for you can take advantage of the late night satellite tournaments. These generally begin at one in the morning and since the number of players won’t be high, you stand a bigger chance of winning.

Conclusion:
Playing poker requires tremendous skill as well as come luck. While you cannot depend on luck, improve your skills and your online casino or other kind of betting account will show a profit.

Oh No, Not Another Diet!

For us in the Northern Hemisphere summer has arrived and shedding the layers of clothes has begun. But for many it’s a case of extra winter baggage still hanging on, which sees a lot of people taking drastic measures like semi-starving themselves to fit into their bathing suits and summer outfits.

So this month I will examine firstly what happens to your body if you severely reduce calories and secondly how to safely and effectively achieve permanent fat-loss.

Topics
1. Cutting calories - hunger pangs!
2. How it effects the body in the long term
3. 5 keys to permanent and healthy fat-loss

• Need for Muscle

• Cardio in moderation

• Eat to boost metabolism

• Water

• Sleep
4. Conclusion

1. Cutting calories - hunger pangs!

What comes to mind when you hear the word diet?
Bad memories of starvation and restriction, or a physical feeling from a lump in the throat to a stomach aching from past hunger pangs. That’s the group of diets I am talking about: Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Slimfast or Cambridge - diets that the foundation involves cutting calories (calories are simply units of food energy).

Firstly however it is essential to stress and clarify that not all calories are the same. For example the calories from a slice of white bread has a different effect on the body than the same amount of calories in a serving of vegetables. So in order to be accurate I am all for reducing calories (consumption) from processed food but not whole food!

The following article examines what happens to your body when you reduce calories from whole foods resulting in a reduction of essential nutrients and energy for the system to function effectively.

2. How it effects the body in the long term

So how do “calorie restrictive” diets work?
Basically on the simple principle of less calories (or energy) coming in as opposed to more energy being used. This leaves the body in a negative energy balance state which results in using current sources including body fat.

Success from that concept makes sense in theory and often achieves positive results on the scale but unfortunately it’s generally short term because the body is a lot more complicated and smarter than that simple theory.

Therefore to explain why it’s essential to look deeper into the body’s mechanisms for creating a natural balance or homeostasis.

After cutting calories the miracle of the body’s internal wisdom sends a message saying “slow down the master regulator of metabolism” - otherwise known as the thyroid gland.

An under-active thyroid is one of the reasons people cannot achieve a permanent optimal weight. The thyroid gland reduces the energy production to cope with the reduced energy input which consequently slows down many of the bodies systems which we experience as fatigue.

Another problem in cutting calories is the body uses existing muscles for energy which further reduces metabolism as muscle is an active tissue. Losing muscle mass gives people a false sense of fat-loss as muscle weighs more than fat and can make the scale lie.

In short, the drastic approach of severely cutting calories does not work in the long run in the effort to lose body fat!

So what does?

3. 5 keys to permanent and healthy fat-loss

In my experience long term success comes from controlling metabolism through a synergy.

Synergy can be described as “the interaction of two or more agents or forces so that their combined effect is greater than the sum of their individual effects.”

I believe firmly that the success of an individual’s health and fitness goals depends on the following synergy: the need for muscle mass, cardio-respiratory exercise in moderation, supportive nutrition as part of an overall healthy lifestyle that includes the right amount of water and sleep.

The need for muscle. Muscle is an active tissue that needs fuel. It’s your friend if you want to lose body fat by increasing your metabolism. Did you get that? Muscle helps you to lose fat. Does it mean you have to end up with a body like Arnold Schwarzenegger, ladies? No, activities like circuits, Yoga and Pilates develop muscle. Furthermore after the age of 30 our muscles shrink so it is imperative to regularly maintain or build them.

Cardio in moderation. It is important however not to overdo the cardio (e.g. cross trainer or jogging), as this can lead to a decrease in muscle mass which are your fat burners. I am not saying Cardio is a bad thing, as it allows nutrients to be transported to the cells via the bloodstream. When fat is released from storage centers (adipose cells) it travels through the bloodstream to be “burned”. But if there is a decrease in muscle mass, the body’s ability to burn fat is also decreased. I recommend short duration cardio to limit the possibility of losing muscle.

Eat to boost metabolism which means minimising simple sugar and refined carbohydrates intake, but consuming frequent meals consisting of proteins (meat, fish, chicken), complex carbohydrates (starches- brown rice), fibrous carbohydrates (vegetables), and essential fatty acids (olive oil). By eating every 3 hours metabolism increases and your body basically says I don’t need to store this as fat as I get food regularly. (1)

Drink plenty of water. The body is made up of around 75% water. Water is crucial when it comes to health by playing a role in transporting nutrients, digestion, elimination of waste products, detoxification, etc. Processes that if not balanced can directly lead to weight gain.

For example body fat is a great place to store toxins by pushing them away from the vital organs. Only until an individual has detoxified will the body freely give up body fat as it naturally protects itself from circulating dangerous toxins through the blood stream.

Beware a “dry mouth” is NOT a safe judge of thirst, it is actually a sign that the body is well into dehydration.

How much water should we drink each day? That depends on several factors including your weight and how active you are. But without complicating it with litres or ounces my rule is start the day with 2 big glasses of water and then take a water bottle everywhere you go sipping throughout, aiming for at least 8 glasses consumed for the day. Additionally hydration comes from pure water not soft drinks, juice, coffee, tea, processed milk or alcohol. These drinks require much more water than they actually contain to process, detoxify and pass them out of the system, and lead to further dehydration. To maximize absorption add a pinch of unrefined sea salt. (2)

An excellent text outlining the need for water is called “Your body’s many cries for water” by Dr. Batmanghelidj.

Get sufficient sleep. Sleep is another factor that has huge ramifications on the body. I consider sleep a major tipping point as many times I have personally seen clients only achieve results until they get to bed earlier and sleep a little longer.

It may seem far fetched but we are often sick, overweight, diabetic, and suffering from disease because we don’t sleep enough. The invention of the light bulb brought with it a host of chronic health concerns. In 1910 the average adult slept 9-10 hours per night for over 4,000 hours yearly. Currently we are lucky to get 7 hours for an average of 2,555 hours yearly. (2)

Dr. Shahrad Taheri, a leading sleep expert reported that those who are sleep-deprived have the “same hormonal balance in their brain as someone who has been on a low calorie diet for three months”. Which as previously discussed puts the body in a starvation state triggering a negative hormonal change, potentially leading to obesity. (3)

The earlier you get to bed the better. Aim to be asleep by 10.30 pm and to obtain a minimum of 8 hours sleep in complete darkness. The body is programmed to perform tasks at certain times. One example is the gallbladder which detoxifies between 10 pm - 1 am. A good rule is every hour of sleep before midnight is worth two hours after in terms of recovery and repair.

To find out how to improve your sleep patterns check out the November issue of Peak Performance article called “22 Ways to a good nights sleep”. (4)

4. Conclusion

So next time you have that fat-loss thought don’t set yourself up for failure, be smart and think synergy: need for muscle, cardio in moderation, supportive eating, plenty of water, and sleep.

How To Build Your Own Web Site

Once you decide to start your own internet business you
will experience the challenge of building your own web
site. There are factors you need to consider such as what
platform you will go for. Personally I would go for a
Unix/MySQl/Php configuration over Windows. The reason for
this is that you get a lot free scripts that you can use
and their are plenty of paid scripts as well. You also do
not have to pay any licensing fees for software.

Use websites like Website Wizard When first starting out on
the internet. Building your own web site can be a daunting
task. You need to learn Html, Php, Cgi and MySQL which can
be quite difficult. You also need to learn how to setup
your credit card processing, mailing list and affiliate
program. To be successful you need to focus most of your
efforts on marketing. I suggest you use a system like
Website Wizard which has most of the modules that you need
built into it. This allows you to focus on your marketing
efforts.

In the long run I suggest you read a few html tutorials and
learn a lot of the web site design skills. For things which
are more complicated you can always outsource this. However
being able to do a lot of the tasks yourself will help you
to save money. Creating your own web site with your own
look and feel will always set you apart from competitors
and give you a distinct advantage.

Follow these how to build your own web site tips and you
will discover that building your own web site can be a lot
of fun.

Become a Master of Bliss Now

Law of attraction certainly does not discriminate as to whether you are living in joy or living in misery. However one sure bet with the law of attraction is that it will give to you more of what you are choosing to experience in the present moment. How exciting is that!

At any moment you are free to choose your state of being and the laws of nature will give to you more of what you are choosing. That’s like someone who goes to a restaurant and the rule of the restaurant is that they will match the plate you have taken with another of like size and content. If you are not wise enough to select the foods that are good for you then you are out of luck in being delivered what is of quality for you.

Choose a state of bliss now and be guaranteed more states of bliss. Perhaphs you are thinking that it is not easy to suddenly become blissful because the dog still needs to be fed and the lights still need to be turned off. Oh and by the way the car is not running well and the world is at war. Well your being miserable adds nothing to the elevation of the planet and there will always be a reason to dismiss joy for later. But, joy needs to be ceased NOW.

A true master chooses to find and cultivate Joy in the midst of the deepest darkest of experiences and you being the master that you are can begin now.

Here are 5 paths to becoming a master of bliss and setting the trail for law of attraction to deliver more.

1) Within every experience there is something good. The most beautiful things are born out of the most disparaging conditions.

2) Fall in love with falling down. When you are down life give you the opportunity to see everything from a different vantage point.

3) Celebrate your failures as well as your victories. Your victories were first born out of many previous failures. So this failure which you are pining over is presently giving birth to a victory but you must first honor it.

4) Forgive everyone. People do the best of what they know. If someone chooses to take a destructive path in your life it is because they are convinced that this way is the best. Forgive them for all the previous reasons also. They may very well be the catalyst to the victory that is soon to come.
5) Here is a secret! Tell no one this, but being miserable accomplishes nothing. The problem won’t go away in fact it gets worst. So find something to be joyful about now.

If that does not work here is a free tip, begin to laugh wildly on purpose. Take thirty minutes to just laugh out loud for no reason out all. At first it will seem silly but after a few minutes it will feel good and it will take on a life of its own. This act will shift your own energetic field and trigger a change in your being. The Law of attraction will respond to that powerful vibration and magic will happen.

Concrete Moisture Barriers For Protection Against Hydro-Static Pressure & Green Concrete Problems

Throughout my career as a flooring installer, I have come across countless numbers of timber and vinyl floors that have failed due to one reason or another. After thorough investigations more than 80% of these floors have failed due to either wet concrete or hydro-static pressure. To my amazement most of these floors had never been moisture tested, (a very quick and easy test). Time and time again I hear builders saying “she’ll be right mate the concrete’s been down for weeks”.

To conform to the Australian standard of flooring installations, concrete must have a reading of no greater than 5.5% moisture content. As a general rule of thumb, concrete dries at approximately 20-25mm per month.

If you take these figures into account, then a average slab of 100mm thick can take 4-5 months of drying time before it will conform to Australian standards. If, in this drying process, the concrete is exposed to rain or any water again, this will further increase the drying time. Concrete is like a sponge and will continue to absorb water if present. These times can vary due to surrounding conditions etc. It is generally a myth that concrete dries faster in hotter climates. In hotter climates you normally find that relative humidity is alot higher, meaning there is much more moisture in the air, which will slow the drying times even further.

The other concern for installers is hydro-static pressure. Hydro-static pressure comes from underneath the concrete and moves it’s way through the capillary voids in the matrix of the concrete. Once a floor has been installed, it will draw any moisture present in the concrete to the surface and if there is no means of escape will react with, and break down glue’s etc. Hydro-static pressure can come from a lack of plastic underneath the concrete or such things as a hidden spring running underground which is forcing the water up through the concrete. Water has only 2 objectives in it’s life, to fall down and to evaporate back up into the atmosphere. Floors such as ceramic tiles generally do not suffer from this problem as they can breath through the grout, but vinyl and timber are very prone to hydro-static pressure. The glue underneath the vinyl will break down and timber floor boards will cup.

The most effective way to deal with both of these problems is to use a moisture barrier. Most people will shy away from this because of the costs involved. I can not understand this thinking considering the cost of the floor installation in the first place, and for a few more dollars they can ensure there floor will still be in tact many years down the track.

Moisture barriers have come a long way in recent years and have become very cost effective. Gone are the days of 2 part epoxy membranes that require3-4 days for installation and a topping over them to smooth the surface. This is a very costly exercise which can blow out costs to $50-$60 per m2. There are now moisture barriers that are sprayed directly on to the concrete and penetrate deeply into the matrix forming an internal barrier. These products are considerably cheaper and more time efficient in comparison to the old methods. One particular product that I have used is specifically designed for the flooring industry and if sprayed onto the concrete at time of pour will give a perfect cure as well as lock up excess moisture and allow you to lay floor coverings inside of a 14 day period, as opposed to 28 days with typical moisture barriers. These are a very cheap alternative and can be installed for $12-$15 m2, saving alot of time and money.
This product can be sprayed in a matter of hours (for a 200m2 floor) and has virtually no down time for other trades. The other great thing about this product is that it can be worked over by other trades almost immediately after installation without compromise to the product. The old system of epoxy membranes had to be well protected up until laying, as 1 pin hole in the barrier rendered it useless.

This particular product is a colloidal silicate and should not be confused with a much cheaper and inferior sodium silicate.

This moisture barrier can be directly installed over without the need for a self levelling compound and has no known adhesion problems with any of the leading brands of glue, polyurethane or self levelling compounds.

Colloidal silicates will remain in the concrete for the life of the concrete and this particular company gives a 20yr guarantee against any hydro-static pressure.

In conclusion, I would recommend a moisture barrier under any floor covering whether it has problems yet or not. These products are very cheap and give peace of mind that no further moisture related problems will occur down the track.

Naturopathy

Today we examine a highly influential part of my health approach - naturopathy.

What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy, also known as natural medicine, or natural therapeutics, is the western version of other holistic, nature-based medical systems that harness the body’s own natural healing process (like Chinese medicine).

Naturopaths believe the healing power of the body is the most powerful tool and should be supported - not overridden. The body can heal cuts, mend broken bones, rid itself of infections and achieve feats when given a chance that makes no competition against any man-made drug.

History and theory
The roots of naturopathy go back to the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates, who is often quoted as saying, “one man’s food is another man’s poison”, which is the basis of Metabolic Typing MT (see archive for more on MT). Hippocrates believed the foundations of health and vitality were supportive eating, adequate rest and exercise - and that cures should stimulate the body’s natural healing ability.

Modern naturopathy evolved from Austrian friar Father Kneipp and German Vincent Preissnitz in the 19th century. They further developed Hippocrates idea and formulated the two concepts central to modern naturopathy:

1. Nature cure - the body has the power to heal itself.
2. Natural hygiene - the body requires clean air and water, regular exercise and fresh food, in order to be healthy.

Naturopaths believe the body has a natural state of equilibrium, known as “homeostasis”, and a “vital force” that facilitates healing. They also believe poor diet, lack of exercise, inadequate fresh air and sunlight, too much stress or too many negative thoughts can disturb this equilibrium and lead to disease.

Another considered cause of disease is the accumulation of toxins in the body caused by poor elimination of waste products, ingesting chemicals or additives, or the inhaling pollutants. These toxins can weaken the immune system and suppress the body’s vital force. Here the role of the naturopath is to use techniques to assist in the body’s process of elimination.

Naturopath’s tool bag
Naturopaths use various techniques and therapies to promote health and healing including:
•Advising on healthy foods options
•Herbal and homeopathic remedies
•Detoxification regimes (including fasting, enemas and colonic irrigation) to help eliminate toxins from the body and strengthen the immune system
•Hydrotherapy (using hot and cold baths, mineral spas and douches)
•Breathing exercises and stretches are used to improve flexibility and promote relaxation
•Osteopathic manipulation is used to correct structural misalignment
•Massage is used to improve circulation and relax the body and mind

Consulting a practitioner
Naturopaths are widespread in the US, Germany and Australia. There are fewer naturopaths in the UK and other European countries, but their numbers are steadily rising.

At the first consultation, a naturopath will take your medical history and may check blood pressure and lung function, or suggest blood or other medical tests. They may also use less orthodox testing such as iridology (iris diagnosis) and radionic testing. You’ll generally be given dietary and exercise recommendations and may be asked to follow a cleansing diet or a short fast.

To find a qualified practitioner, we suggest you contact one of the relevant organizations.

In the UK you could contact the General Council and Register of Naturopaths (GCRN). The GCRNs keep a register of over 300 qualified practitioners of naturopathy. Website: www.naturopathy.org.uk.

For other countries see their national governing body, easily found via the internet.

When a person eats or drinks, food is broken down into materials, including sugar that the body needs to function. Sugar is absorbed into the bloodstream and stimulates the pancreas to produce insulin allows sugar to move from the blood into the cells. Once inside the cells, sugar is converted to energy, which is either used immediately or stored until it is needed.

Different Stages of Yoga

Generally, Yoga consists of and is described in eight stages astanga-yoga, (‘eight-membered Yoga’). Yama (‘restraint’) denoting abstinence from injury (ahimsa), falsehood, stealing, lust, and avarice is the first stage; with niyama (‘observance’), denoting cleanliness of body, contentment, austerity, study, and devotion to God, the second stage.

The next two stages consist of physical preparations, such as, Asana (‘seat’), a series of physical posture exercises intended to condition the body, making it supple, flexible, and healthy. Mastery of the asanas can be calculated by one’s ability to maintain a prescribed postures for an extended period of time, without involuntary movement or physical distractions. Pranayama (”breath control”) is a series of exercises intended to stabilize the rhythm of breathing in order to encourage complete respiratory relaxation.

With great benefits, Yoga is becoming very popular all over the world, including making a come back in the land of its birth i.e. India.

Pratyahara (‘withdrawal) is the fifth stage, which involves control of the senses, whereby one can centre all of one’s senses from outward objects to the mind. The first five stages of Yoga are considered external aids, while the remaining three are purely mental or internal aids.

Dharana (‘holding on’) is the ability to focus awareness of externals to one object for a long period of time, such as, focusing the mind on an object of meditation e.g. an image of a deity or some such. Dhyana (‘concentrated meditation’) is the uninterrupted contemplation of an object of meditation, beyond any memory of ego. Samadhi (‘self-collectedness’) is the final stage and a pre-condition for attaining moksha or being released from the cycle of life and death. This stage, allows the meditator to perceive or experience the object of his meditation and himself as one entity.

Though, the pre-history of Yoga is not clear, however, early Vedic texts speak of ecstatics, who may well have been predecessors of latter day yogis or the followers of Yoga. Although Yoga has been made into a separate school (‘darsan’), its influence and many of its practices have crept into other schools.

In the course of time, certain stages of Yoga become ends in themselves, notably, the breathing exercises and sitting postures, as in the school of Hatha Yoga. In a less technical sense, Yoga used for achieving union with God, in the epic poem the Bhagavadgita, is also used to distinguish the alternate paths (‘margas’) to such a union.

With the philosophy and practice of Yoga increasingly becoming popular in the West, the physical and spiritual benefits of Yogic techniques have become available through a wide variety of sectarian Yoga organisations, non-sectarian classes, and television programmes in the United States and Europe.

‘Prapti’ is the fifth power that a practitioner of Yoga can gain mastery over. Anyone, who becomes proficient in it, is able to reach distant places according to his will, in just a matter of moments. Those people wishing to expose this psychic claim as a hoax conducted experiments, only to find that 95% of the time the yogis were able to transport themselves to distant, remote places.

Next, mastery over ‘Prakamya’ shows one how to achieve whatever one desires. Like the Genie in the bottle who granted every wish and carried out every command issued by Alladin, a person who can perform Prakamya can make his every wish come true e.g. asking for Eternal Youth will ensure he is forever young.
