Whether you’re a man or a woman, we’re all familiar with the story of Cinderella. And we all understand that the glass slipper remains a powerful metaphor for success; for having made it. I’m betting that you have your own idea of the kind of triumph you want most and of the magnificent experience of trying on true success and having it fit you in a positively perfect way. At the same time, I’m guessing that the glass-slipper experience you’ve dreamed of may have never materialized, leaving you on the outskirts of real success, leaving you feeling like an outsider. Well, if that describes your experience, then you should know that you’re hardly alone. In fact, you’d be amazed by just how much company you really have.

It seems that throughout my life, I have never quite “fit”. I literally did NOT fit. I endured horrible teasing in my youth simply because I was taller than just about anyone in my school… even the boys! By the tender age of 13, I’d already passed 5′10″ which was only complicated by bad hair and a mouth full of braces. The boys wouldn’t even approach me much less ask me to dance and I’ll never forget accepting the kind offer to dance with my teacher, Mr. Baysinger, at the 6th grade graduation dance. Looking back, I realize how compassionate he was not to let me spend the entire evening as a terribly awkward wall flower!

I struggled for decades with the loneliness that accompanied the sense that there might be something wrong with me. Yes, I had friends but at the same time, I felt different although I’d never admit that to anyone back then. I know how much courage it takes to reveal that you feel misunderstood. Do you feel misunderstood too? If so, you’d be surprised by how many others share your sentiment but who fail to express it was any real honesty. Being honest isn’t about making your self vulnerable, but about taking off the mask that says “I’m okay”.

So, I want to invite you to have a relationship with yourself that’s truly truthful. It’s not about what you tell others. It’s about what you tell yourself and your soul. The point is not to make others like you or to secure their acknowledgment and approval. That’s neither desirable nor realistic. The point is that YOU will acknowledge you by honoring your self with the naked truth. And if you do that, imagine the time and energy you’ll have gained once you decide to stop trying to be likeable and stop saying “yes” to everyone. That will require you to like and say YES to yourself! And only when you’ve done that, will you learn how to accept and fully appreciate your unique gifts consistently and sincerely; and then you’ll experience what it feels like to genuinely fit. That means setting your own terms and meeting with your own approval… not your parents, spouse, boss or friends.

For myself, I finally decided that I simply would not fit anyone else’s mold and, until I designed my own glass slipper (an 11 wide to be precise), I would perpetuate my own forsaken Cinderella drama. When you find yourself able to genuinely appreciate the only YOU there will ever be, others will amaze you by doing the same! Then you can go still further to reveal yourself fully. Reverence means ’something that’s entitled to respect’. That’s the definition of self-esteem. You can move beyond esteem to express your talents, truths and character; now seeing that you have created the experience of powerful recognition from those in your life by way of revealing your unedited self. And along the way, you’ll come to discover that Believing is Seeing!

In the wise words of author Marianne Williamson:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Here’s my challenge for you:

Ask yourself “Who would I need to be to really appreciate and choose myself?” Start small, at the base camp, not the summit while remembering that the process is preferable to perfection. Choose one or two do-able steps to act as a trailhead for your journey. Then list what resources you might need to get to the next camp. Your list could include supportive friends and family, a time or other written commitment to yourself, etc. Think about what tools are at your disposal and how you can leverage them to achieve your goal.

By making the effort in earnest, you’ll learn to trust that what you need will come when you need it. That can be aided by keeping written affirmations and notes where you can see them daily. By putting your intention on paper, you then remind yourself to add action to your intention. With repetition and consistency, you will create transformation. Being flexible with yourself is also critical to your process. That being said, recognize that change encourages more change, more growth and new directions. Your life has more in store for you than you could possibly imagine!

One of the most heavily promoted and “coolest” products around are soft drinks. Millions are spent on superstars advertising coke, pepsi and the like. We know they are not healthy but how damaging is that innocent - and many would say satisfying - can of coke to our health?

1. The current soft drink epidemic
In the U.K. in 2004 nearly 14 billion litres of soft drink were consumed. The 2004 total soft drinks figure represents an increase of 47% over the past ten years. (1)

In Australia soft drink consumption increased by over 30% in the 10 years to 1999. 50% of 16-18 year olds consumed soft drinks every day. (2)

These popular beverages account for more than a quarter of all drinks consumed in the United States. More than 56.9 billion liters were sold in 2000 - that works out to at least one can per day for every man, woman and child. Soft drink consumption among children and adolescents rose 41% between 1989-1991 and 1994-1995, mostly displacing milk and juice, the leading sources of many vitamins and minerals in the American diet. 2. The ingredients
One can of soft drink has about:
• 10-13 teaspoons of sugar
• 30 to 55 mg of caffeine
• And additionally it is loaded with artificial food colors and sulphites

3. Physical costs from soft drink ingredients
• Sugar: Soft drink manufacturers are the largest single user of refined sugar in the United States. It is a proven fact that sugar increases insulin levels, which can lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, premature aging and numerous other negative side effects including associated tooth disease problems.

• Caffeine: Caffeinated drinks cause many nervous system reactions including the jitters and insomnia. High caffeine use is associated with high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, elevated blood cholesterol levels, vitamin and mineral depletion that potentially leads to disease.

• Aspartame: This chemical is used as a sugar substitute in diet soda. There are over 92 different health side effects associated with aspartame consumption including brain tumors, birth defects, diabetes, emotional disorders and epilepsy/seizures. Further, when aspartame is stored for long periods of time or kept in warm areas it changes to methanol, an alcohol that converts to formaldehyde and formic acid, which are known carcinogens. • Phosphoric Acid: May interfere with the body’s ability to use calcium, which can lead to osteoporosis or softening of the teeth and bones. Phosphoric acid also neutralizes the hydrochloric acid in your stomach, which can interfere with digestion, making it difficult to utilize nutrients. (4)

• Benzene: Recent random government testing of soft drinks found five of them contaminated with levels of benzene (which is a cancer-causing chemical linked to leukemia) that exceeded federal standards set for benzene in drinking water. Benzene is able to form in beverages that contain vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and the preservatives sodium benzoate or potassium benzoate. Exposure to heat and light can trigger the formation. (5)

Looking at the consumption statistics and related health consequences I have no doubt soft drinks are one of the main reasons from a nutritionally perspective why many people suffer health problems. Aside from the negative effects of the soda itself, drinking a lot of it is likely to leave you with little appetite for whole foods that your body needs to function at its best.

I employ the same strategy myself. Our conversation re-affirmed my belief in not making a decision or delivering criticism when angry. Anger can spoil a good thing – it is a moment of weakness for a business owner and repeated bursts of anger with employees can destroy a good team.

Sometimes your clients or employees will make you angry. The trick is in not dealing with them right away. Take some time to compose yourself, rehearse your case, and then present it to the other party in a calm voice. Invariably, you will come out the winner.

A good strategy is to let the phone call go to voice mail if you think the caller will be telling you bad news or you have just handled a stressful situation and are still upset. Always invest in caller ID!

If you are talking to an employee or client and the conversation is going badly, take a break and think about the situation. Hardly any problem cannot wait a few hours for a solution. Always leave yourself time to think. It is better to be seen as “not decisive” than make a decision you will regret.

Use this strategy when you anticipate bad news or even when you have to deliver a bad news. It is better to wait and think about a problem with clarity in your mind before responding. You can never take your words back or undo an action taken in anger.

Recently I caught up with Carol, an good friend of mine. After exchanging all the news, we got talking about our careers. Carol told me she had started a new business as an interior designer. She had been working with one of the top interior designing firms in the country but decided to branch out on her own because it offered more creative satisfaction. Her company sold interior design packages to home owners looking for home improvement on a budget. Though she had a sizeable customer base, there was always room for more, as with any other business. During the course of conversation, she mentioned that selling a package to a client was the thing that gave her instant ulcers…selling was not her thing. She also talked about how it was difficult to figure out if each sale was contributing enough towards profits. I offered advice as the serial entrepreneur that I am.

“Carol, its great to know you’ve started out on your own. Being an entrepreneur is one of the best jobs around. I understand your concerns and your dilemma that selling is important but not for everyone. However, as you said yourself you can’t do without it. So let’s find a way to make it easier for you to start a sales pitch and close the deal.” I said.

“That would be great, Marilyn. I know you’ve started a lot of businesses and know something about this. So how do we start?” she said. “I first want to know what you do before you start planning a new sale meeting with a client.” I asked her. “Well, I usually call them up to set a time for a meeting and take a look at the house. Then I go back draw up a package, call them again to discuss it. Once I get a confirmed time for a meeting, I present the package” she answered.

“So where is the difficulty?” I asked her. “I feel a little uneasy pitching the package to the client because I am not sure if I can answer all their questions right away and that could cost me a sale” she said.

“Alright, Carol, I can see what is going on here. You basically don’t feel fully prepared for the sales meeting. That’s not unique to your case. Let me tell you about my ‘Mental Walkthrough’ strategy. You know, I am not a very ‘salesy’ person either but being in different businesses all these years has taught me the importance of selling and the value of preparing for it. I prepare for a sales meeting by mentally walking through all the steps of the sale process. That helps me in several ways:
- It gives me an idea of how I would begin the meeting. Taking the lead in a pitch improves your chances of closing the deal favorably and gives your client the impression that you are eager to help them out.

- It helps me work out how I would start the talk and what would I talk about. I don’t want to leave out any key details about my products or services the first time I speak with the client. So thinking about this step in advance helps me crystallize my thoughts.

- A mental walkthrough also helps me plan my reactions to different scenarios. For instance, in an interior decorating business, your client could ask you for a cost on redoing just one area of the house. Or when you make the presentation, they might ask you what it would cost for a design package for the whole house. When I think about the pitch, I keep in mind different scenarios that could develop and prepare to deal with them. This way I am able to pre-empt any uncomfortable questions as well.

- With a walkthrough, I am also able to factor in various costs like the number of phone calls and the expenses incurred on driving up to meet the client and the cost of delivering a product into my total cost and see if this client and their project is financially feasible for my business.

Making a sales pitch means you plan the whole process in advance. Of course, you cannot plan your clients’ reactions but you can make a good guess and prepare how to deal with them. A mental walkthrough of a sale is a critical step in good selling because it not only streamlines your selling process but also helps you keep a check on your cost of sales.” I added.

“Marilyn, I can’t tell you what a great help you’ve been, I am so glad we had this chance meeting. Now I can simplify my selling process and you know what? I already feel more comfortable with the idea of selling,” Carol said.

A seemingly small exercise like a walkthrough can help you build a great relationship with a customer. That in turn will increase the possibility of a repeat sale or a referral. So the next time you have to start a sale, spend some time to go through each step mentally. It will be time well spent.
