My first real addiction came during “Upstairs, Downstairs.” The five-season series was the most popular Masterpiece Theater program ever, and it had lots of competition. The host at that time was Alistair Cooke. Sesame Street (one of the educational children’s shows, if there’s anyone left who doesn’t know that) had a segment in which Cookie Monster played “Alistair Cookie,” hosting a show called “Upstairs, Downstairs.” The show consisted of Grover going up the stairs, then down the stairs.

There were many more to follow that brought quality programming each Sunday night. “Jeeves and Wooster” (a very young and different Hugh Laurie), “Last of the Mohegan’s,” “Anna Karenina,” so many Shakespearian dramas and comedies, many stories from Dickens, historic dramas, and my absolute favorite, “Prime Suspects.”

Helen Mirren is always superb in the other Masterpieces like “Painted Lady” and “Elizabeth I,” but her portrayal of Jane Tennison amazed me. Now the complete Jane Austin is keeping me tuned.

Then there are the wonderful science and nature programs. Nature, Nova, Scientific American Frontiers, Wired Science, plus many special programs about health entertain as well as educate. Alan Alda adds humor and a willingness to participate on Scientific American Frontiers. Nature is so full of beauty and information that I learn something new every episode.

Not only is there Sesame Street for the young and young at heart, but my favorite, Reading Rainbow. It introduces a book, and then takes the viewer on a sometimes worldwide exploration of topics related to the book. I used this in my classroom from fifth grade to kindergarten when I taught. That’s only a few of the exceptional children’s shows.

Ken Burns presented many in-depth histories of wars, baseball, jazz, the West, biographies, and more. The American Experience, History Detectives, and other specials offer unique views of history.

Britcoms on PBS have been some of my favorite shows to watch. The Vicar of Dibley with Dawn French was hilarious as well as touching. It was comedy with a cause. Judi Dench as Jean and Geoffrey Palmer as Lionel in As Time Goes By were a perfect match. This fall they are returning with the rest of the cast for two more specials. It’s really something I will look forward to viewing. Among the popular shows are Waiting for God, Keeping Up Appearances, Chef, and Faulty Towers.

Another wonderful show from the BBC is All Creatures Great and Small. After reading all the stories by James Herriot, I was doubtful this series could live up to the books. It was so well done that it did, and I’m enjoying the reruns now. It’s a delight to animal lovers, but captivating stories for anyone.

There are how-to programs for just about anything you want to know how to do. The French Chef with Julia Child started it all with me. She continued with master chefs to present many different cuisines. Now there are various shows that inspire cooking many new dishes. And This Old House inspires us to remodel and tell us how.

News is reported in many different ways. The Jim Lehrer New Hour usually presents a balanced reporting on major issues. I just wish it weren’t on at the same time as the local and national new on my cable network. Bill Moyers, Charlie Rose, and others look closely at important issues.

Music, from opera to rock, is a part of PBS. Great Performances continually lets us see musical programs that are superb. Boston Pops has a summer program that includes backstage interviews as well as the weekly concerts. Andre Reiu and his Johann Straus Orchestra have put on some spectacular events. There is a changing and exciting parade of performers.

I’m grateful to PBS for introducing me to so many experiences that would have passed me by. It’s hard to pick one, but if I had to, it would be Koko the gorilla who speaks with sign language. If you don’t know about Koko, you should watch PBS.

PBS has some of the best science and nature programs. Nature is so full of beauty and information that I learn something new from every episode. This is it’s twenty-sixth season, so it has to be great to last that long. The awards for this show would fill a gymnasium.

The last program I watched (last Sunday) was about the parrots of Australia. I was also reading a novel that took place in Australia at the time. The Nature program had so many fascinating species and behaviors that I look forward to it being shown again. When I started reading the book again it referred to the huge wild parrot population of Australia. The program enriched the book. Some of my favorite Nature programs were about the oceans. But I’ve never watched one that didn’t fascinate me.

Alan Alda adds humor and a willingness to participate on Scientific American Frontiers. The subjects cover every aspect of science including global warming, animal intelligence, amazing cars and fuels, past and present submarines, slimming with surgery, robots, and the list goes on with every new program.

Nova is another big award winner. It is a science documentary series that often include history. It, too, covers a wide topic area including health, anthropology, space, disasters, technology and nature. My favorite episode was “Can Chimps Talk?” Years ago I remember watching Washo, the first signing chimp. From later programs on PBS I learned about Koko, the signing gorilla. I’ve kept up with her for years. She has been on the cover of “National Geographic” twice. Her trainer, Dr. Penny Patterson, wrote two children’s books about her and she has her own site:

Every woman needs a good chick flick to stir up a few tears now and then. Even every guy needs to experience a good chick flick that gets him choked up. Sure, he’ll be looking around the room to make sure no one is looking, but chances are a chick flick is really good if it makes a man cry. However, what defines a chick flick? Most people define it as a sappy love story that women will love and men will hate.

Sometimes they make good date movies depending on the content and at other times the men hide in another room because they can’t stand all of the romantic talk and the “guy wants girl, girl shuns guy, guy aches for her, guy tries to woo her, girl still ignores him, girl finally realizes he’s the one, guy gets girl, and all is well.” Well, that is a general story line, but some feel that all chick flicks are the same. The thing is, that’s not true. Let’s look at 10 that have been rated as the top 10 chick flicks that will make you cry:

1.-Gone with the Wind - Of course this one is going to be number one. Everyone is aware of this timeless classic of total girl power and love.

2.-Beaches - This one really takes one for a loop. Barbara Hershey and Bette Midler make everyone want to call up their best friend just to tell them they love them. The storyline is compelling, the tale of two friends allows the viewer to relate to the characters, and the commitment is just overwhelming. The end gives you Goosebumps.

3.-Fried Green Tomatoes - This one is not a sappy love story at all, but another movie about what constitutes true friendships. There apparently is something about a woman and her best friend. The story tells of two young friends and their trials as Cathy Bates makes a new friend in the present.

4.-Steel Magnolias - Everyone is aware of Steel Magnolias because it was one of the greatest roles Julia Roberts ever took on. It does contain a little bit of a love story, but it is about friends, family, and their love for each other and how they will stand for each other. Of course, the ending when Julia Roberts’ character dies, the viewer is stricken with tears.

5.-When Harry Met Sally- Now this one is a romantic comedy that will bring tears to your eyes. See, the sappy love story didn’t make it until number 5, so not all chick flicks are “guy gets the girl” movies. This movie is about friends of the opposite sex realizing love exists.

6.-The Women- Here is another female bonding movie that shows friendship at its finest with a circle of friends supporting each other.

7.-Grey Gardens- This chick flick gives a strange look into a very strange and very intense relationship between a mother and her daughter.

8.-Sabrina- Now this is a “girl wants the guy” movie and even has Sabrina attempting suicide because she wants his love so bad.

9.-The Valley of the Dolls - This movie has you captivated from the beginning. Patty Duke, Sharon Tate, and Barbara Parkins takes you on a journey of drugs, death, disease, and so much more.

10.-Thelma and Louise - Of course this one can’t be left out with its tale of true female friendship. They love each other, protect each other, and they even die together.

It is not recommended that all of these movies be watched back-to-back. If they are, a special trip to the store may result in the purchase of a value pack of tissues to make it through. Whether you are into “girl power,” love stories, or true friendship, the top 10 movies has all of that for you.

If you were to buy DVDs to add to your collection, be sure to get some that will appeal to the women in your household. Be romantic and get her something that will bring tears of joy.

Riya Sen often regarded as a ’sex symbol’ is one of the most famous and rising star from the land of Bengal. The television show American Idol is one of America’s favorite TV shows to watch. The goal of the show is to entertain and along the way find the next great singer. Celebrity judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul fit the bill. Everyone has a chance to participate in finding that next great performer. Most of the time this works really well in the show. Most of the time is definitely not all the time. From the beginning of the show there have been some strange occurrences that have stayed the course every year.

The problem is the best people are not making it every week. In fact some of the worst performers are lasting much longer than they need to. Office water cooler talk about the show seems to echo the same thing, “Why did Sanjaya make it through?”.

Let’s take Sanjaya Malakar from season 6 for instance. In the outset I thought he had a nice voice and deserved to advance. But he became dull, boring and just plain annoying. From head to toes this guy is not the next American Idol and most people agree. But he’s stayed on longer than singers who are better than him in every way.

Back in season 3 there was a young man by the name of John Stevens that lasted and lasted close to the end of the season. I would blame that on the campaigning he got from Simon at the outset. Yes, stinkers that last seem to be apart of the history of this show.

Peter Parker has finally found the balance he’s longed for between his love for Mary Jane Watson and his responsibilities as Spider-Man.

The city of New York and it’s citizens are at last coming around and appreciating everything he has done as his crime-fighting alter ego, and Peter is in the running for a staff job at the Daily Bugle.

However, everything Peter has worked for is about to unravel. Flint Marko, while fleeing prison, is caught in an accident that displaces molecules and is transformed into the Sandman, a new super villain who is able to change his body into any shape of sand he sees fit.

When Peter learns of a connection between The Sandman and the murder of his Uncle Ben, he will stop at nothing as Spider-Man to capture him. But before Peter can do so he discovers a mysterious black substance has turned his suit black, and has brought forth a darker side of Parker and Spidey nobody has seen before.

Peter begins to give into this new dark personality, starts to abandon the ones he loves the most and in turn his best friend Harry Osborn takes up his late father’s mantle as The New Goblin. Quickly Parker begins a new romance with his lab partner, the beautiful Gwen Stacy but in doing so Peter sets off a rival Bugle photographer, a troubled young man by the name of Eddie Brock who is obsessed with Stacy. Little does Peter know the black substance has its sights set on Eddie else as well. Turning Brock into Venom, a foe that mirrors everything Spider-Man can do. Forcing Peter to become the strong-willed hero he has forgotten about if he hopes to defeat his greatest threat yet.

Peter Parker has finally managed to piece together the once-broken parts of his life, maintaining a balance between his relationship with Mary-Jane and his responsibility as Spider-Man. But more challenges arise for our young hero.

Peter’s old friend Harry Obsourne has set out for revenge against Peter; taking up the mantle of his late father’s persona as The New Goblin, and Peter must also capture Uncle Ben’s real killer, Flint Marko, who has been transformed into his toughest foe yet, the Sandman. All hope seems lost when suddenly Peter’s suit turns jet-black and greatly amplifies his powers. But it also begins to greatly amplify the much darker qualities of Peter’s personality that he begins to lose himself to. Peter has to reach deep inside himself to free the compassionate hero he used to be if he is to ever conquer the darkness within and face not only his greatest enemies, but also…himself.

What’s cool about the advancement of technology is that there are certain pieces that were simply made for advanced pieces of technology, but were created too soon. A prime example would be “Dark Side of the Moon” by Pink Floyd. The sonic landscapes and incredible details of the album were simply born to be enjoyed on the crisp, clean sound that a CD player could only provide. Even though “Dark Side” was released in 1974, its full appreciation couldn’t be discovered until the advent of the CD some 15 years later. Now, “Dark Side of the Moon” is the first CD you purchase when you grow out of your little crappy radio to a full-fledged adult, amazing kick-ass stereo system.

Which brings us to film; special effects have always been an integral part of creating worlds that moviegoers could believe in. From the colorization of Oz to Moses parting to Red Sea to being chased by the Death Star, special effects are just as important as the lead actor in some films. And while we’ve always been amazed at what was created for its time, it would be interesting to see what could be done then with the technology of today.

If there is one movie that’s destined for today’s technological and special effects advances, it comes out in July of 2007: the Transformers. For years, fans and enthusiasts would imagine what a real life Transformer would look like. How would the classic cartoon incarnation of Optimus Prime, Megatron and the other Autobots and Decepticons translate to a live action, big screen adventure? Well, this year, that question will be answered.

Forget about story or character or plot development for a second, and simply focus on big giant robots beating each other up. And then, in an instant, those big giant robots will transform into a truck or a plane and rip through the city at an incredible pace. In the early days of film, the concept would probably be impossible to place on the screen and do it justice. In the golden age of film, it would look interesting, but laughable. In the special effects era of movies, it would look passable, but not believable. But now, in 2007, with all the possibilities and abilities which special effects wizards have at their disposal, the Transformers, should, at the very least, look realistic.

A common source of debate for the upcoming Transformers movie is how the characters should look. The classic cartoon appearance, while iconic and nostalgic, supposedly does not translate that well onto a live action, big screen experience. Therefore, a whole new redesign of all the characters was necessary in order to make this movie appear realistic. And that is one of the main objectives behind this movie: it has to look absolutely real. In today’s age of special effects magic, there shouldn’t be too many movies that have cheap looking production values. But, in terms of scope and size, the visual challenges of the Transformers represent some of the biggest in moviemaking history.

Of course, because this is a big-budget adaptation of a classic 80’s cartoon and comic, the whole idea is to make this a trilogy. But, nobody is going to be interested in Transformers 2 & 3 if the first one looks amateurish. This is one of those movies that could never have been made at any other time before this one, and it’s just as imperative that all the effects are done to perfection. There are some cracks at movies that you only get one shot at, with no remake really possible. This is one of those movies!
