Multi-Level Marketing is Dead - Killed By The Internet

The MLM Business model was an effective distribution network for products from a variety of categories. From vitamins, to household appliances, there was an MLM company that could gear up its band of distributors and take that product to market.

However, the MLM business model has been eclipsed by the gargantuan power and promise of the Internet. With a direct intention to enhance the progress of any business, the Internet has that has trampled, discredited and almost destroyed the MLM industry.

The promise of riches, success and wealth from MLM participation has imploded into the faces of millions of innocent business owners who are devastated financially because their MLM hopes and dreams have failed. But thousands of starry-eyed “would have beens” MLM’ers have turned their backs on the hyperbole of the MLM swan song and merged their dreams of financial freedom to the Internet.

The Internet home base business opportunity has replaced all those secret home meetings and overpriced “sizzle” products offered by those redundant MLM companies. The Internet opens up a whole cornucopia of business opportunities that offer a variety of product, services and pay. The Internet really does provide the the average person a real chance to achieve above average income that leads to financial freedom.

Online businesses like eBay provide new entrepreneurs with a ready-made customer base and storefront. These ebay entrepreneurs are a true testament to the power and promise of the Internet. Almost anyone has what it takes to make it to the upper tiers in eBay. Conversely, with the MLM business models, only 2% of new MLM distributors will ever see a profit.

According to Skip McGrath, author of “Titanium eBay” he calculates that eBay PowerSellers earn anywhere from $1,000 to more than $150,000 monthly. Even the lower figure of $1,000 per month is more than the average MLM recruit earns per year. According to their own records, one of the top MLM companies revealed that their average leaders earns less that $2,500 per year.

Consumers no longer require an MLM company for distribution of products. Walmart has created the most effective distribution channel anywhere in the world. Walmart provided low cost home care and personal care products at a cost that few MLM companies can compete with.

Using the Internet consumers are able to buy almost anything they want from the privacy of their homes. Online shopping is a billion dollar a year business. Most consumers will not jump through the hoops imposed by MLM companies to purchase their products. Customers are not obliged to pay to purchase products, the Internet provides too many options.

Customers do not want to pay to play with an MLM Company, they will just click away and find the same product at a cheaper price.

MLM cannot survive in a market that offers individuals an infinite number of choices. When MLM was the only game in town, individuals joined in droves, MLM companies sprang up everywhere and for years this industry thrived. That time has passed. The Internet is a virtual marketplace with endless possibilities for all the promises that the MLM business model failed to provide.

MLM companies cannot survive close scrutiny. The Internet is the ultimate information gathering medium. The same communication medium that the MLM giants intended to use to expand its customer and distributor base is actually the medium that has exposed the MLM opportunity as a game of cards that is falling fast. Several television expose’ have shown that MLM companies despite their benevolent claims use new distributors in an elaborate scheme to enrich itself, not its community or its distributors.

10 Easy Steps to a Successful Postcard Marketing Campaign

Want an inexpensive yet effective way to market your business? Then think postcards! They are less expensive to mail than letters and they almost always get read because your message is out in the open for everyone to see. If you follow these 10 steps, you’ll discover how effective and lucrative marketing with postcards can be.

1. Keep Design Simple
Don’t confuse your prospects. The design needs to be simple. Remember the saying “less is more?” You must make it easy for the prospect to get the message. In fact, using color on both sides is unnecessary and confusing to the recipient. Save money and print color on the main side and black and white on the address side.

2. Avoid Too Much Information
Do not give in to the temptation to cram copy onto every square inch as you try and fit a sales letter onto the postcard. This will overwhelm the prospect and dilute your message.

3. One Idea per Postcard
If your product is efficient, inexpensive and comes with a lifetime guarantee…choose one feature (and of course, the corresponding benefits) to promote on the postcard. This is a great opportunity for multiple mailings. Send a separate postcard detailing one benefit of your product or service.

4. Powerful Headline

You must pay the closest attention to the headline. The headline is what will compel the prospect to keep reading. The best type of headline has a direct benefit to the reader.

5. Promote Your Website
Don’t forget to promote your website on the postcard. This is a great opportunity to drive extra traffic to your site. It also gives the prospect an easy way to get extra information.

6. Make an Irresistible Offer
Don’t forget to entice the prospect with an offer. If you are giving a special discount or trial offer, make sure the offer is in the forefront, not buried in mounds of copy.

7. Strong Call to Action
Do not forget this critical step. Instruct the prospect to do whatever you feel is the appropriate next step. Just make it simple. Prospects don’t want jump through hoops to get to your product or service. Do you want your prospect to call you? They tell them what to do.

8. Build a Great List
You can have the best postcard out there but if you don’t have a good list, it won’t convert well. Check out a service like InfoUSA.com or your local Chamber of Commerce to build a good list. And don’t forget to maximize your website by including an opt-in page to create the best list of all…customers who are interested in your product or service.

9. Repeat Mailings
If you want your campaign to be effective, you must send more than one postcard! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people complain that postcards don’t work because their one-time mailing failed to convert. Once-a-month mailings can be quite effective. But if your budget is tight, the minimum you should send is 3.

10. Follow-Up with Phone Calls
If you really want to add extra mileage to your campaign, follow-up with phone calls. After you send the postcards, the “cold call” isn’t so cold and you’ll be on your way to finding new customers.

Remember…making sales is a numbers game. The more prospects you contact the more sales you will make. It’s that simple.

Need more sales? The solution is as easy as your next postcard campaign!

The Words That Win New Business

When I first set up in business on my own I couldn’t afford to advertise. My tactic was to write to businesses I thought would make good clients and ask them to see me.

You have to understand that I thought I knew a fair bit about marketing communications. The first eighteen years of my career had been spent working in some of the world’s greatest advertising agencies.

I’d studied the methods of the greats like Leo Burnett, Claude Hopkins, John Caples and David Ogilvy. The agencies I worked in had been suppliers to the likes of Pepsi, Kelloggs and Green Giant for half a century. Accounts like that are so valuable that other agencies are constantly trying to prize them away. You have to be good to hold on to good accounts for even a few years.

With a pedigree like that you’d think I’d know how to write a decent letter, to craft a few words that would win me some new business. But you’d have lost your money if you’d bet on me at that time.

One day, in a fury of frustration, I bundled all my prospecting letters together and sent them to the best copywriter I’d ever met to ask for her advice.

Her name was Morag Maclean and this is how we met. I’d been working on a major insurance account for two years when she was assigned to the team. The first ad she wrote was so persuasive that I went out and bought a policy.

Morag must have been directly descended from Robbie Burns and Robert Louis Stevenson – she used words in a natural, yet meaningful way. There was a ring of truth about everything she wrote.

She sent my letters back with a short handwritten note which said: “You haven’t found your “voice” yet. You’re shouting, your letters don’t sound like you. Just tell them what you’ll do for them using the voice in which you normally speak. And don’t forget to keep writing to the same people. Like all good things, once is never enough.”

With Morag’s advice I sat down and crafted letters. I wrote one a day for ten straight days. All the time looking for that “ring of truth” that would make people believe that they would really benefit from my services.

When I finished each letter I put it away in my bottom drawer. And when there were ten letters there I took them out and read them out loud. The two I though best I sent to Morag to ask if they sounded like me.

One letter came back. It had a large blue “tick” which ran from the bottom left of the page up to the top right. In the bottom right corner she had drawn a small heart and written “Morag” underneath.

That letter opened the door of the mighty P&O shipping company.

Once I’d found my “voice” winning new business became a whole lot easier. Words seemed to come more naturally and I built an enviable clients list. Now I feel entitled to call myself a Marketing Expert.

Helping others to find their “voice” is one of the most important parts of my work today. It is also one of the toughest. But the rewards for mastering the art of using the right “voice” come when you win new business. Then it seems so easy.

Pick Direct Mail Marketing Lists that are Added to Often, Not Just Updated Often

The success of your next lead generation mailing
might depend on one simple question. Before you
rent a list of potential customers, ask the list broker
this straightforward question: “How often are the
names on this list added to?”

Don’t simply ask how often the list is updated. The list
might have been updated yesterday but might not
contain any more names than it did eight years
ago.

An update to a list might be nothing more than making
sure the names and addresses are accurate, or that
each record has a phone number. But that’s not as
important to you as a fresh list.

Where direct mail lists are concerned, you obviously
want accuracy. You don’t want to mail to people who
have moved. You don’t want to mail the same piece of
mail to the same person twice because the person is
in your database twice.

But an updated list is not the same as a list that has
been added to. So make sure you ask your list broker
how often the list in question has new names added
to it.

An updated list is clean. But a list with new names is
fresh. You want a list that is both clean and fresh. You
want a list that has plenty of new names on it.

Ideally, you want a list that is updated often and added
to often. That way, your direct mail offer reaches the
most prospects, since less of your mail will be
returned to you as undeliverable. And your package
reaches more potential buyers, because more people
on the list will be receiving your offer for the first time
(assuming you have mailed to the same list
before).

The Good Side Of Calling All Those Leads

Has anyone ever had success by calling all of those leads? I sure have. I have really had it with all the negative talk about leads. Everyone seems give lead marketing a bad rap. Yes it can be tedious to dial 100 leads in a day which is what was recommended to me in the beginning days of my getting on the phone to promote my business. It can also be very intimidating and scary to talk to all those strangers and try to sell them something that they had no idea they were wanting. And imagine that familiar feeling that comes from your very first hang up. Pretty darn painful; I sure remember it that way.

These are all just people you know, just like you and me. If you can’t talk to them, your chances of having a successful business of your own are going to be limited.

My opinion, calling leads is the very best way for the thousands of up and coming internet and network marketers to get their feet wet in the extremely lucrative business of network marketing. If you spend any portion of your day dialing leads to promote your business, you are going to be miles ahead of the rest of the pack in the two most important areas for network marketing success. Those areas are in ACTION and EXPERIENCE.

Calling leads is taking action and the experience you will get communicating and fine tuning your marketing approach is invaluable. Not to say you will do this for ever, maybe not even for a month. But by taking action and learning how to connect and communicate with others, you will learn exactly what you need to know to take your business to the next level of success.

The internet is a very impersonal environment. What it is lacking is the personal connection which can begin to be developed over the telephone. Once you begin to learn the skills that allow people to trust you, have confidence in what you are selling or offering and to even develop a friendship or business partnership with you, you will be well on your way to a very successful life and business.

Personal fulfilling relationships are where we all get many of our needs met in life. When we can create an honest connection on the phone with a client, a prospect or our own down line, we have a strong foundation to build upon. When we simply jump on board that latest quick money deal that shows up in our inbox, there is generally no connection, especially not with a human (usually just auto responders). Take your time, make it fun, educate yourself, be honest and connect with people. Don’t try to just sell something. That’s boring!

As far as the leads go, buy a bunch, generate them for free if you know how and start calling and never stop until you are certain that you have had some success. If you stop from a place of frustration or excuses as to why it is not working, you are only giving into your own failure. Call, call, call, be funny, act happy even if you are broke, make a friend, talk like a human not like a robot and by taking all this action, you will be lead down a path of success that is perfect for you.

Calling leads makes you strong, keeps you honest (if you want success) and helps you learn how to truly give something of value to others. If you are one of the millions of people that have given up on direct, on the phone, lead marketing, remember this: You have only given into a part of you that will always find a way to keep you from getting what you want out of life. It is only you in your brain making excuses. I have struggled through it all and have found some great successes. If you need some motivation, feel free to contact me. I have a lot of great tools and ideas to get you moving in a direction that works for you.

Call some leads and make it work. It’s up to you.

This Forced Prospective Clients To Call Me

Special offers abound in every sphere of merchandising and marketing, but how many of them work? Before I decided to make any special offers I gave the matter a great deal of thought.

When is an offer a special offer and when is it just a discount or a freebie of some sort? It seemed to me that to make anything special it has to be specific and personal.

Look at it this way. Imagine it’s Christmas Day and you and your extended family are sitting around opening presents. See the expressions on the faces of the women present if every woman in the room finds, when she opens her parcel, that she has exactly the same blouse as all the other women! Would that feel special or ever so slightly deflating?

It must be the same with special offers. If the offer is open to everyone, what’s special about it?

So, because I live near to a major sea crossing point I made a special offer to ferry companies. As there are only 7 operating companies on the ferry route near my business you might think that was too small a niche to aim for. But I created a special offer that was exclusive to ferry companies and sent them each a carefully crafted letter.

There’s something about an offer that is “especially for you.” It is perhaps a bit flattering. It makes you feel special. It makes you feel that someone has thought about you and cares about you. And that is a good feeling.

That’s the point I have been struggling to make in this article, a special offer should make the recipient feel that they are special. That gives them a good warm feeling inside and kind of puts them under an obligation to respond. This is achieved by targeting your special offer.

Perhaps I don’t fully understand why the recipients respond, I just know that they do. Two out of the 7 ferry companies I wrote to rang me up. And I only sent them two letters each.

That is fourteen letters and two replies. For those who care about statistics the response rate was fifteen percent. If you could achieve results like that all the time it would be easy to become a millionaire.

The special offer is undoubtedly a powerful weapon in your marketing armoury, if used properly. By that I mean that special offers have to be targeted. Yes, I am saying that only the targeted special offer works. Equally there are many pitfalls for those who don’t take the trouble to target their special offers.

Marketing Expert David Ferrers talks about the power and the pitfalls of special offers and gives some useful indicators about the right way to think about the special offer. He demonstrates the results that can be achieved when you get your thinking right and target your special offers at specific niches.

Downline Builders - Are They Worth It?

Downline building is one of the most difficult hurdles to overcome in a Network Marketing business. Its also the most important one as your entire financial future in the industry is dependent upon you learning how to successfully recruit. Many of the internet marketing ‘elite’ use downline builders to promote their MLM’s and opportunities and this offers some fantastic benefits, but can also be costly.

Benefits of using a downline builder:

The benefits of using a downline builder are obvious. First and foremost it gives you the ability to earn multiple streams of income. By recruiting into a downline builder initially, your potential prospects are placed into 2 or more network marketing companies, which really gives you some big earning potential. Downline builders also offer a wealth of advertising tools, as most downline builders are also set up with comprehensive training, and they focus on teaching new recruits to successfully market. Many modern downline builders not only build your “paid” downlines in the primary opportunities, but also build your ‘free’ downline in many of the advertising tools the builder may utilize. This can include safe lists, traffic exchanges, affiliate marketing tools etc.

The success rate of those using a downline builder are also much higher then those who promote one opportunity by itself. As being a member in a downline builder virtually guarantee’s an active upline, and utilization of tools that actually work. Not to mention the downline builder itself is another income source, as most downline builders will have bronze, silver, and Gold membership levels.

For an internet novice….joining a downline builder is appears to be a definite no-brainer.

Downsides of using a downline builder:

When using a downline builder you lose the ability to pick and choose what programs you want to promote. Downline builders are setup with the opportunities already in place, so to join a downline builder you also must buy into the programs opportunities to benefit from its advertising benefits, and helpful upline support. Also, the cost of joining all the opportunities in the downline builder can be astronomical, as many builders buy into dozens of MLMs. So to be fully monetized into the builder can take a rather heavy chunk of change, and by only buying into one or two opportunities in the builder, you may be losing money as many of your recruits may pick up programs that you didn’t.

Also, the programs owners win BIG with downline builders, because anytime they decide to promote a new program, they simply plug it in and have an instant downline of thousands. You can have quite a bit of success in a downline builder, but nowhere near as much success as the owners of these systems.

So is there a solution?

The way to get all the benefits of a downline builder, without having to promote a certain opportunity or product is to use an “open ended builder,” or OEB for short. These are few and far between, but basically these builders have all the duplicatible marketing techniques of a downline builder, but YOU choose what programs to promote to the people who you bring in. These builders provide the marketing tools, and infrastructure of a true downline builder, you simply plug in your programs and opportunities to be marketed.

A great OEB is the Affiliate Funnel. This OEB downline builder was put together by Jon Olson and Mike Paetzold, two of the internet marketing elite. The Affiliate Funnel allows you to reap the benefits of a full blown downline builder, while at the same time promoting YOUR opportunities, as the builder has no preset opportunities to join. It also features a multi-tier membership, complete with gold upgrade. So it acts as another source of income to those promoting it upfront. Its definitely worth taking a look at, and is a valuable asset to any serious online business.

Thrive Not Just Survive In Network Marketing

Regardless of whether you are representing a product or a service, you must be confident that your company will deliver according to its promise at all times. Moreover, your upline mentor or sponsor must be able and willing to help you achieve good results when you enroll in a network marketing business.

Probably the best thing you can do before starting a network home based business is to try the products or services yourself and give them your most fair rating. If you can see yourself recommending those products or services to your friends and family even if you did not receive some kind of benefits, then you have just found the right business for you.

You do not want to invest time, money and effort into something of poor quality or for which there is no market. Make sure that you are building your future success on a product or service people really need and want.

The next highly important step is to check how successful your sponsor has actually been, and how determined they are to walk down with you on the path leading to success. It is critical to know from the very start where you are standing. If your sponsor or mentor is not really interested in helping you, you are bound to work much harder. In fact, network marketing experts will tell you that this is a people’s business rather than a product or service business.

Perhaps you believe that now is the moment to start your network marketing home based business. Well, not quite. Take your tine and review everything you know about the company, its product or service and the success stories it generated. Check your local library for books on getting your own business started.

Just because you will be dealing with network marketing it does not mean that you should treat it differently to running any other traditional business. It goes without saying that hard work is needed in order to create a six figure income. Therefore, don’t forget to attend all your company’s meetings and teleconferences – you will have a great chance of knowing other marketers and learn valuable tips from them.

The Future of Network Marketing

Beyond what you might have heard, network marketing most certainly is not the ‘wave of the future’ for product distribution. Traditional marketing methods are still valid and work well, and in all likelihood network marketing will never completely replace traditional distribution and marketing of consumer products and services.

This isn’t to say network marketing is on the decline however - quite the opposite. In less than ten years (from 1995 to 2005) sales generated through network marketing have more than doubled, exceeding $30 billion dollars in the United States alone. There is certainly a demand for both the products made available through network marketing, as well as the demand from entrepreneurs looking to other methods of starting a business.

Franchises have their place, and any traditional brick-and-mortar business will always be around. But the convenience of operating a network marketing business from home, and the exclusivity of in-demand and valuable products only available through network marketing are attracting entrepreneurs from all walks of life - stay at home parents, career-minded individuals with a desire or need for an independent stream of income, as well as the serious investor who understands the incredible personal leverage and residual income that only network marketing can provide.

I don’t think it’s out of the question to speculate that the future of network marketing will be very bright, however, for network marketing to become the ideal business opportunity in the world’s eyes there are many issues that need to be addressed and corrected within our industry before people as a whole see network marketing as what it should be.

I’m inclined to write about the shady marketing methods that so many seem to prefer in their promotional efforts - and this definitely needs to be addressed at some point - but my main concern (and what will literally change the world when the proper concept is adopted by the network marketing industry) is the overall lack of responsibility from network marketing sponsors themselves.

97% of those who get involved with network marketing, fail.

These statistics may be acceptable in traditional business, where the person starting the business often has no clue about how to operate and build it successfully, but in network marketing this is completely unacceptable. A responsible network marketing sponsor should be absolutely committed to the success of those they bring into their organization, yet far too many network marketers simply recruit people into their business and leave them to learn how to build it themselves.

I was discussing this topic with an associate of mine, and she had this to say:

“I know what you mean Korey but a lot of the sponsors don’t have the sponsor to show them how to do it. And even if they did a lot of the people getting into the business… …they really don’t want to learn or they just think it’ll happen.”

I agreed. But it’s also the responsibility of the network marketing sponsor to qualify their prospects and make sure they fully understand what network marketing is all about. It is our responsibility to make sure those looking to us for support understand what’s necessary for them to become successful - to make sure they’re in a position both mentally and financially to start a network marketing business - and if they don’t fit the bill it is absolutely our responsibility to let them know this.

Whether it’s out of desperation or selfishness or just not knowing better, too many network marketing sponsors haphazardly bring people into their business opportunity without any concern for their prospects. This needs to change. When it does, common sense dictates that network marketing will not only see a huge decrease in failure rates, but will also become an incredibly attractive and reputable business to get involved with.

Beyond franchising, and well beyond any other home-based business.
This is the future I see for network marketing.

When people can grasp what network marketing is truly all about, we will all become more successful with our efforts. When people start helping people, instead of hype-ing people, network marketing will become one of the most respected business models in the world. I’m counting the days.
