When you child goes off to college there are many things that you will be stressed about such as the fact that they will no longer be near you. Many mothers experience the “empty nest syndrome” as a result of their children leaving home and having their own lives. Of course I should say that fathers experience the same loss, but perhaps they tend to hide it better. One of the things a parent doesn’t want to worry about is their children and food allergies as they head off to the dorms. With college students food allergies that live in dorms it can be a very difficult time for the parents to feel less stressed. First of all, of course, the young adult heading off to the dorm should be aware of what they can and cannot eat, but if you have ever been to college you know there are definitely times where a college student doesn’t pay as much attention to certain things as they should.

Here is an example: a college student with food allergies goes to live in the dorms. The university doesn’t supply kitchens in the dorms, except for a tiny community kitchen, so the student tends to eat on campus. Of course the on campus cafeteria uses a lot of the ingredients the college student is allergic to. This means that the student tends to just pick up the same meal every day because they know it is safe. Well a few months later they are having a reaction to the food they have been eating. This is because the college students food allergies in the dorms are getting worse. The person has been susceptible to multiple allergies to begin with, but without mom to take proper care and to see to a rotation diet the student has been eating the same foods.

This is a dangerous example and rare, but it is important to understand. You see for those who are prone to multiple food allergies it can be very easy to develop a new allergy later on in their lives. This is because there are too many of the allergens or antibodies in the system for the immune system to deal with. In this case the body begins to show a reaction as it tries to break down these foods. So for college students with food allergies in dorms it is important that the student take the proper time to eat and stick with a rotation diet.

History Of Food Allergies

The history of food allergies in this case means the transition of a person’s life. In other words we are not going to refer to the history in relation to when the first person to develop food allergies was recorded and how that has increased over time. Instead we are going to look at how a person can progress with their own history of food allergies. You will find that your history of food allergies is going to change. First the history will depend on three factors: the age of onset, type of food(s), and the initial reaction.

You see most children that have a food allergy have found that as adults or as young adults they no longer have it. This is because of the causes. The immune system is the cause for the symptoms a person experiences. In other words the immune system finds an antibody or protein that it doesn’t know, and it attacks. As the immune system ages with a child it develops a tolerance to more things introduced to the system. In other words the immune system can develop a tolerance for something that you were once allergic to because it has a more developed system for dealing with antibodies. Think of metabolism for a moment. A person with a slow metabolism does not digest food as fast as someone with a more energetic metabolism. So as a person ages and the immune system develops further it can handle more things. This means that your history of food allergies will change. You may as a child have been allergic to peanuts, but as an adult you are now able to eat anything with peanuts because your body is capable of breaking down the antibodies.

So your history depends on your age. You will find that adults can have late onset of food allergies as the body develops an inability to deal with certain foods. The type of food can determine how allergic you are and whether that allergy may persists throughout your life. It could mean that you just stop eating that food for a while, and that in two years you will no longer have an allergy. If the allergic reaction is extremely severe with the first incidence you are more like to have a longer history of food allergies that will continue. You may even find in your history of food allergies that you develop multiple allergies to food.

If your baby develops a rash almost immediately after you introduce a new food you should go directly to your doctor. There are generally eight food allergies that are common among most individuals. In this article we are going to look at the seafood allergy and peanut allergy as the two kinds of food allergies you can suffer from because these two kinds of food allergies are the most common out of all of the food allergies.

The seafood allergy means that the person is allergic to all types of seafood including shellfish. There are actually two kinds of fish allergies. You have the seafood allergy that includes everything, and then the shellfish allergy, where a person can still eat some types of seafood. You will find that with the seafood allergy scaly fish, and crustaceans are also included. This means that any food, which has been cooked in the same pan or on the same grill with the seafood could have a potential of harming the sufferer. The allergy is characterized by the immune system shutting down, where several symptoms will occur. Most often the person who suffers from this allergy will have epinephrine of some form with them just in case. You will also find that those with a seafood allergy can have a reaction from just holding uncooked fish. What I mean by this is that a severe food allergy means that coming into contact with the natural allergen can also create a reach for the individual.

The peanut allergy is categorized by itself, although there are certainly allergies to nuts. With the peanut allergy there is sensitivity to eating anything with peanuts in the ingredients. In other words the person who suffers from a peanut allergy cannot eat peanut butter, anything cooked in peanut oil, and cannot have peanuts in any of the food they eat of any variety. The peanuts will cause the immune system to shut down. Usually anyone with a peanut allergy even a mild case will see a rash, perhaps facial swelling, and will usually suffer from shortness of breath. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America most of the children who suffer from the peanut allergy will actually outgrow the symptoms as they age. You will find that about 1% of the population will suffer from the peanut allergy and must exclude any and all things made with peanuts from their diet.

These two kinds of food allergies are the most prevalent allergies, and there are many individuals who neglect to be tested before they first try the food.

Many of us are aware that food allergies exist, but when we think of them we consider them to be almost rare because there does not seem to be a large number of the population afflicted with it. Therefore it may be considered a rare food allergy by many standards. However you will find that there are some food allergies that are rarer than others. This is usually determined by the number of cases that have been reported by doctors. Three of the most rare food allergies are chamomile tea, fruit, and gluten. In the case of this rare food allergy you will find that any contact with the herb or the actual tea will cause the affected person to have hives, breathing issues, and other symptoms related to food allergies such as runny noses, and abdominal pain. It is very important that if you suspect your child or anyone suffers from the rare food allergies to make sure they seek help for the issue right away. It is not enough to just avoid the allergen that causes the problem, in some cases the food allergies can be so severe that a person needs to have epinephrine administered immediately to avoid death. You will also find that rare food allergies can be a combination of common and the more rare food allergies that are known.

In other words some individuals present the rarest of food allergies in having issues with several of the common food allergies combined. Often the skin may appear itchy before the actual hives or reddened patches of skin will appear. Hydrocortisone is used for a great many allergies that cause skin issues because the properties take away the itch and help to reduce the redness in a quicker manner. Just using a lotion can actually increase the problem.

While hives are a rather mild reaction if anything more serious occurs, especially breathing problems it is recommended that you seek medical attention immediately for the issue. When you have food allergies you must be extremely careful with what you eat. For an example let’s use someone that is allergic to wheat. Many of the spaghetti or noodles, desserts, and even rice are going to be made with wheat. Hay Fever Symptoms and Treatment

Hay fever or allergic rhinitis is a common allergic response to specific substances in your environment. Hay fever is one of the most common allergic conditions in the United States.

Seasonal hay fever is triggered by tree pollen, grasses or weeds and other plants. Year-round symptoms can occur if you have indoor allergy to dust mites, cockroaches, mold or pet dander.

Mild hay fever symptoms can be managed effectively with over-the-counter medications. Year-round symptoms or severe seasonal hay fever symptoms may require an allergy specialist for appropriate evaluation and treatment. My year-round allergy symptoms are managed effectively by an internist. An internist is a physician who specializes in adult diseases.

Without proper treatment of hay fever symptoms there can be an increase of more allergic conditions such as asthma or eczema. Uncontrolled hay fever symptoms will impair the quality of your everyday life.

Hay fever symptoms include:

–Runny nose
–Watery nose
–Congestion
–Frequent sneezing
–Itchy eyes, nose, roof of mouth or throat
–Swollen, blue-colored skin under eyes
–Postnasal drip
–Cough
–Sleeplessness
–Fatigue
–Irritability
–Facial pressure and pain

Hay fever symptoms are similar to the symptoms of a common cold, however, there are differences. Hay fever does not mean you are allergic to hay and is not triggered by hay. It does not cause a fever. The probable cause is an allergic reaction to pollen or mold. Heredity plays a role in determining who becomes allergic including hay fever. If allergies or asthma runs in your family, you may be more likely to develop hay fever.

You are most likely to develop hay fever during childhood or early adulthood, but it can begin at any age. As you get older, symptoms may worsen or improve. I have noticed my hay fever seems to be diminishing; however, this could also be due to better allergy medication.

Treatment for hay fever symptoms:

Your doctor will identify what allergy triggers your symptoms and then develop a plan to avoid and/or cope with those substances. Review the following treatment options:

–Nasal corticosteroids sprays
–Antihistamines relieve itching, sneezing and runny nose. Common antihistamines include Benadryl, Chlor-Trimeton, Tavist, Claritin
–Decongestants are often used in combination with antihistamines and include Sudafed, Actifed
–Cromolyn sodium helps relieve hay fever symptoms by preventing the release of histamine.
–Leukotriene modifier: A prescription tablet taken to block the action of leukotrienes
–Nasal atropine helps relieve a severe runny nose

It is important to talk to your doctor before taking any over-the-counter medications for hay fever especially if you have a chronic health condition that requires you to take other prescription drugs. You will need to know whether or not there could be a drug interaction or other adverse effect.

I will never forget the time I was seeing an internist for an upper respiratory problem, who prescribed a medication that if taken with other medications I was on could have caused an instant fatal heart attack. The pharmacist is the one who warned me of this. It is important to stay alert when taking several different kinds of medications. It is not always the doctor who can give or who gives you all the medicine’s side effects. A good pharmacist has a wealth of knowledge about drugs and their interactions with each other. Make it a practice to always ask your pharmacist about side effects and interactions as well as your doctor. I did change internist after that incident and was then diagnosed correctly and given the appropriate medications for my hay fever symptoms.

If medications do not relieve your hay fever symptoms, your doctor may recommend allergy shot therapy. The goal of immunotherapy or desensitization therapy is to desensitize you to specific allergens, reduce your signs and symptoms, and decrease your need for medications. Allergy shots are usually given over a period of three to five years to reach this goal.

Your Allergy Testing Map

It is helpful to know about your allergy testing options before you go to the doctor. The type of allergy testing depends on what you suspect you are allergic to and the severity of your reaction. Some tests work better than others depending on your case. Your allergy testing map ends at 3 different destinations.

The 3 type of tests are:

  • Scratch Tests
  • Elimination Diets
  • Blood Tests

Scratch tests are the most common form of allergy testing conducted today. The results can be seen as quickly as twenty minutes. The actual test is conducted by placing a small amount of the suspected allergen onto the surface of the skin, usually along the spine or on the upper arm. The patient is then scratched or pricked on the same area allowing some of the substance to penetrate the skin. The area is then observed to see whether the patient has an allergic reaction such as swelling, redness or itching. This method of allergy testing is quick and can cover quite a range of possible allergens. That is why it is particularly good when you don’t know what your allergies are. The test works well for insect bites, airborne allergens like pollen and food allergies as well.

Specific food allergies can be tested by using a different form of allergy testing that puts a patient on an elimination diet. For a period of several weeks the range of foods suspected of causing the allergy are eliminated from the patients diet. Then each food is then reintroduced individually to see whether the allergy symptoms come back. Of course, this method of allergy testing is better for mild food allergies. If you get severe allergic reactions bordering on anaphylactic shock then you should skip this test and the scratch tests and immediately go to your next option.

The last form of allergy testing on our list is a RAST(radioallergosorbent test) which most people just classify as a blood test. Blood is drawn from the patient and is then sent to a lab for testing. The blood is examined for the presence of immunoglobulin (IgE) antibodies. The presence of these antibodies indicates whether the body’s immune system is causing the body to have an allergic reaction. Elevated levels of these IgE’s can tell your doctor whether you are allergic to certain types of allergens. This type of allergy testing has been known to not be as precise or accurate as other methods.

The last type of test that is provocation or challenge tests. This is where a doctor exposes you directly to what you think you are allergic to so that your reaction can be monitored. This can be very dangerous so definitely don’t try this at home. Your reaction may be more severe than you think. This type of allergy testing is of course not that common.

In conclusion you should be prepared when you go in for your testing. The doctor will ask you for a thorough medical history and depending on the testing involved may ask you to stop taking any sort of medicine you have been taking to treat the symptoms of your allergies. This will make the allergy testing more effective.
