The connection between the two is bacteria. A whole group of bacteria that live in the mouth are known to break down proteins in their environment and produce volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) that have a very unpleasant smell. The bacteria involved are predominantly anaerobic - they live in environments where there is little or no oxygen - and they are found in gum pockets, in the grooves and crevices on the back of the tongue, and around the tonsillar crypts.

Scientific studies have explored the relationship between the periodontal bacteria that are thought to cause much of the tissue destruction in gum disease, and the presence of breath odor in patients suffering from gum disease. A study by S. Awano and others, “The Relationship between the Presence of Periodontopathogenic Bacteria in Saliva and Halitosis,” (International Dental Journal: 2002 Jun;Suppl 3:212-6) looked for four species of bacteria in patients with both periodontal disease and bad breath. Researchers also measured levels of volatile sulfur compounds - hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan. The results indicated that Bacteroides forsythus, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Prevotella intermedia were all associated with VSC production, with B. forsythus being the most significant producer of all.

Other studies investigating the habitats of periodontal bacteria have shown that B. forsythus lives on the lining of the mouth in locations other than infected gum pockets in healthy people as well as those with gum disease, and P. intermedia is frequently found living on the surface of the tongue. Thus, while there is a clear association between periodontal disease and bad breath, there is also good evidence to support the claim that periodontal bacteria can be the source of bad breath, even in the absence of gum disease.

Some types of bad breath are from the food consumed such as garlic, onions, and alcohol.

Eat The Right Foods

How to Ease Tooth Pain Before You Can Get to the Dentist

There are few things more terrible than tooth pain, even minor tooth pain. As soon as you experience that familiar sharp throbbing, you should call the dentist and make an appointment. However, don’t wait in agony for your appointment. There are a number of different things that you can do to ease terrible tooth pain before you can get to the dentist.

1. Elevate your head at night.

When you lie down to go to sleep, the blood will flow to your head. This can increase the pain of your hurting tooth or teeth. Elevate your head with several pillows when you go to bed for the night, and you will have a better chance of actually sleeping.

2. Buy clove bud and some cotton swabs.

Clove bud is an at home treatment remedy that actually works. You probably won’t be able to find clove bud at any large store, like Wal-Mart or Rite Aid. If you go to any herbal store or whole foods store, you will be able to find clove bud. If you aren’t able to find it anywhere, you can buy just cloves at your local supermarket, but it won’t work as well.

Brush your teeth to remove any plaque or food debris. Place a few drops of clove bud on the cotton swabs. Apply the clove bud directly to the part of your mouth that feels pain. Also apply the clove bud to the area around the tooth that hurts. Only use a few drops! Clove bud may burn, but that’s pretty typical.

The way that clove bud works is to basically overwhelm the nerve endings. The burning sensation won’t last for very long, so don’t worry about it. You can use clove bud for a short amount of time, but it can end up destroying your nerves. This means that you shouldn’t use it for any longer than a week.

If you can’t find clove bud, you can also try a product called First Aid. This product contains clove bud, so it works in much the same way. Simply follow the directions on the box.

If you can’t find First Aid or clove bud, chew on a number of cloves from the supermarket, much like chewing tobacco. Leave the cloves in your mouth for about 30 minutes. This should numb the pain for a few hours.

3. Baking soda and water

Dissolve some baking soda in warm water. Rinse your mouth with the baking soda solution to ease the pain. It also might help to rinse your mouth with warm salt water to help prevent infection.

If you are on a low sodium diet, you can still use warm salt water. Instead of using table salt, use Epsom salts. Epsom salts have magnesium in them instead of sodium, so you won’t have to worry about your blood pressure.

4. Remove any trapped food from your mouth.

Food particles that are stuck in your mouth can also cause pain. Rinse your mouth with warm water first in order to loosen up any food debris. Then, floss your teeth to remove any other food that is trapped between your teeth.

5. Use an over the counter treatment.

Some of the over the counter treatments that are available. Some of the more popular ones are Anbesol and Orajel. Simply follow the directions on the package.

6. Pain relievers

Some of the most effective pain relievers for tooth aches are asprin and ibuprofen. Take 324 milligrams of asprin every four to six hours. Or, if you prefer, take 200 milligrams of ibuprofen every four hours.

7. Ice it

All you have to do for this is take a bunch of ice, wrap it in a towel, and hold it to the outside of your mouth for 15 to 20 minutes every hour.

Dental Health - 8 Tips for Healthier Gums

Do you see traces of blood as you rinse your teeth after brushing? Do you think it is normal and not worthy of any further thought? Well, think again. You might already be suffering from gingivitis without even knowing it!

According to the American Dental Association, or ADA, three out of four adults suffer from gingivitis. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to gum disease, which is the leading cause of some serious dental problems and tooth loss in adults.

To prevent gingivitis and its eventual progression into a full-blown gum disease, it would be best to visit your dentist regularly. Only the dentist can diagnose the problem and give you the necessary advice and treatments. That, along with these simple suggestions, can give you a better fighting chance to ward off gum disease and enjoy better dental health forever!

Be a strict follower of the “three-three” rule. You should devote at least 3 minutes 3 times a day to oral hygiene to maintain good dental health. This is non-negotiable and there should be no ifs and or buts about it. Anything less than this could deprive your teeth of the attention they need.

Take the boredom out of brushing. Brushing and flossing are perhaps two of the most boring activities. It may just be the reason why people tend to spend less time doing it. To take the boredom out of brushing, why not try dry brushing (brushing without toothpaste)? This way you can brush your teeth and perform some other activities at the same time.

Avoid torturing your teeth! Contrary to popular belief, using toothbrushes with hard bristles and applying undue pressure while brushing will not give you cleaner teeth. Instead, it will damage the teeth’s enamel and give your gums a hard time as well. So the next time you brush, use a toothbrush with soft bristles and please don’t push it too hard!

Get it thoroughly cleaned. It would be wiser to brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth the next time you brush your teeth. It will increase the blood circulation around the tissues in your mouth and may help minimize the amount of bacteria present. If you are prone to tartar build-up, you might also want to try tartar control toothpaste. Just remember to look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance or Recognition when shopping around for one.

Don’t forget to floss. The food debris, which find their way through the tiny crevices between your teeth, can only be removed by flossing. This is why flossing is considered extremely important in maintaining good dental health. For best results, you should floss twice during the day. You may also want to try using waxed floss to make the task a lot easier.

See what baking soda can do for your teeth! Baking soda has mild abrasive properties that can aid in getting rid of plaque. It can also neutralize the acidity produced by bacterial wastes in the mouth, serve as an effective deodorizer and give your teeth a gleaming polish! For best results, mix baking soda with a small amount of water to make a paste and use it to brush your teeth, giving special attention to the gum line. Do this at least once or twice a week and see the difference!

Eat a more balanced diet - Studies prove that a poor diet may speed up the rate of gum disease and may also increase the severity of the condition. To avoid this, make sure your body has all the nutrients it needs to maintain optimal health.

Make dental visits a routine. Regular visits to your dentist may help you stay away from gum disease. So, please do your teeth and yourself a favor. Go visit your dentist regularly!
