Medspas … 5 Tips For Wellness Health And Beautifying Baby Boomers

It’s no longer enough to work on the “outside” of your looks and health. Wellness spas and preventive health-focused medical spas reach into your “inner body”, address sources of hyper-tension and stress, rough skin, even sleeping disorders, offering tension releasing deep tissue massage therapies, hydrotherapy, spiritual healing, sexual health guidance, colonoscopy and digestive fitness evaluation, skin and facial skin rejuvenation treatments, cosmetic and aesthetic procedures in a refined blend of Western and Oriental medical traditions, and offered in a relaxed setting.

Tip #1 Aromatherapy Massage. The top medspas, offering day spa cosmetic services, branch out to increasingly popular and effective treatments such as aromatherapy massage. Exploiting the penetrating nature of unaltered botanic oils and essences for deep penetration and tissue stimulation, aromatherapy massage combines focused pressure…such as shiatsu…while the massage therapist gently moves pressure into knotted tissue and muscle areas, working to relax and release bound-up tension…meanwhile oil essence is worked into your tissues to enhance healing and overall skin health. A half hour to hour session can leave you calm, relaxed, your skin muscles and skeleton loosened for a feeling of tranquility.

Tip #2 Deep Tissue Massage Therapy. Wellness spas are a safe haven for people seeking reduction in tensions, stress, unwanted rough skin When accumulated tension builds deeper within your body, surface touching lacks the vitality to address the underling tension. Solution? Deep tissue massage therapy. Tendons, ligaments, muscles, your skeleton and core nervous system all converge under the subtle applied arts of the deep tissue massage therapist.

What you’re looking for is the deep tissue massage that will work out knotted tightening “binds” in the integrated network of ligament, tendon muscle, nerve and skeleton. What will you experience? Some initial discomfort as the massage therapist presses into tender areas…and when your session is over, you’ll feel this subtle all-over feeling of relaxation and stimulation. The closest related therapy is chiropractic, which also delivers neuro-muscular pressure and skeletal adjustment in integrated therapies.

Tip #3 Classic Thai Massage. Centuries before modern chiropractic therapy principles became understood, Oriental natural physicians experimented in manipulating body energy systems, identifying energy pathways which could be stimulated in order to relieve disease symptoms or, proactively, to promote enhanced health. Modern wellness spas offer skilled therapists who can artfully deliver a series of Thai massage therapies focusing on skeletal adjustment, tissue stimulation, releasing accumulated tension deeply bound into tendons and ligaments. Sessions can last up to two hours, and your Thai massage therapist will combine hand and feet techniques in an integrative manual therapy to stimulate your body…inducing passive stretching similar to yoga and Tai chi.

Tip #4 Infrared Sauna. Medspas practice a range of detoxification therapies including the popular infrared sauna therapy. Imagine resting comfortably in a cooler infrared sauna…temperatures between 110 to 130 rather than the 190+ degree scorching from traditional Finnish saunas. High tech but safe infrared energy is easily, and deeply absorbed by your body and, according to practitioners’ theory, can stimulate the deep-tissue release of stored toxins held by our skin, the body’s largest organ. You sweat, your body’s circulation receives a stimulating boost, you leave your infrared sauna relaxed, refreshed.

Tip #5 Craniosacral Therapy. Exploring the “possible” as much as the “real” separates the truly avant-garde medical spas from the traditionalists. Yes, having a pool, golf and tennis nearby is a plus. However, New Age theories about brain activity, toxicity and disease formation suggest that the brain may operate with rhythmic patterning unique to itself. Craniosacral therapy exploits this subtle possibility with a hands-on therapy…light touch…sensitively probing and seeking feedback…releasing pressure from cranial bones (sutures where the bones connect) in an effort to identify brain patterns and signals of imbalance and potential disease. Unconventional, even far out? Yes. But wellness spas turn over every rock in the possibility of identifying a health therapy that’s just right for each visitor.

Bottom Line. Will all your physical tension simply vanish in one session as if by magic? Unlikely. But your medspa medical advisor will teach you the principles of regular exercise, stretching, yoga and posture, healthy foods, skin health strategies, detoxification, disease symptom recognition, plus a range of relaxation techniques.

Massage Chairs an Alternative Method in Receiving a Massage

If you are on the go and don’t have time to lay down for a nice soothing massage, but are in need of relaxation and stress relief, another option is the Massage Chair. The massage is given over the top of your clothing, you sit up, and in 10 minutes or so you are finished and ready to go.

David Palmer in the 1980’s introduced a sitting posture massage. Since then, this new innovation in massage therapy has more fully developed and grown popular. As with the traditional massage, tables have been designed and built to create the most relaxing position in order to provide best results. Chair massages have done the same thing and developed their own unique positions to maximize comfort and produce the similar results of stress relief, muscle balance, and relaxation. There are two specific chairs used: desktoppers and portable massage chairs.

The desktopper is portable, light weight, and fits on the top of a desk (convenient for offices which do not have a lot of space, and you use the chair in your office or room) or table. They come with similar look of the head and upper portion of a massage table.

Portable chairs do not look like a chair, but are specifically designed for chair massages. Again benefits are light weight, can fit in smaller places than a massage table, and are specific for regions of head, neck, shoulders and back. Typically, you will not see full body massages done in the chair. They take less time and provide similar results.

Another popular chair is the electronic lumbar support chair. These often recline and give the needed lumbar support while mechanically massaging. There are electronic and digital chairs that you can select the various types, strength, and regions of the massage. These chairs can be put in a professional office, at home, or in a student’s dorm room. Some of these recliners come with a stool to massage your calves.

Massage Tables - What to Look for

In our vast and changing world as our understanding increases specialists are becoming more and more sought after. Massage Therapy is a growing industry where certified specialists obtain a niche in a high paced world meeting the increased demand for luxury, comfort, pleasure, and stress relief. One aspect that separates one masseuse from another masseuse may be as simple as the massage table they perform their specialty upon.

1.-Light Weight Tables: are tables designed for the traveling masseuse who does not have a storefront or whose clients prefer the massage to be performed in the comfort of their own home. Typically the table does not weigh more than thirty pounds. They are collapsible and commonly made from lighter weight material such as aluminum or a metal composite.
2.-Professional Tables: are more geared for storefront business operators, however these also come in collapsible forms and usually weigh more than 30 pounds because they are made from heavier products such as wood. They are usually covered in leather as opposed to synthetic and man-made materials.

As the massage industry becomes more specialized so have the tables on which the massages are performed. Three basic designs are an inexpensive table for students and amateurs, for certified professionals who have a storefront, and collapsible tables built for personal home use. Since we have already spoken about the professional table we will discuss the two other options available:

1.-Student Tables: these are designed for the student who is studying the art of Massage Therapy and wanting to begin a career as a Masseuse. They typically fit in the area of light weight tables, because they can collapse and be stored in a smaller area and they are less expensive than a professional table.
2.-Home Users: A table built merely for the couple in the security of their home to perform massages on each other or friends. These are typically of lower quality and durability as they are less frequently used. However, depending on the need for comfort one may look also to professional tables for home use also.

If you are just beginning or have been in the business for some time, there are massage tables which will fit the needs you have.

What You Need To Know About Getting A Massage License

In the US,massage therapy is regulated by each state and in cases such as California- every city and town have different regulations.

In each state there are specific licensing requirements that usually include some kind of test which often is the National Certification Exam which is provided by the National Certification Board of Massage and Bodywork. But just because there is a national exam does not mean you can take it in one state and then move to another state and just open your business. Each state may require different educational requirements. You need to check with each state as to what the requirements are.

To be able to practice massage therapy, you may also be required to get a business license in your city or town which is different than a state license.

I know it is very confusing. It is one of the reasons there are so many political problems in the massage profession. Each state defines massage in a different way. Some are licensed as health care professionals, others just as professionals. The difference will have an influence on whether or not a massage therapist will be able to bill insurance companies.

There is also a new agency that is now forming that will be making a new test and it is unknown what will happen to the NCE exam. The Federation of Massage Boards has been started by Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals to do a survey and find out what is really best for the profession.

There are some important things you need to ask of any massage school that you are thinking of attending:

- what are the licensing requirements here?
- does your school fill all of the requirements?
- Is your school accredited and if so, by whom?
- Are your teachers qualified to teach massage or are they just massage therapists teaching? (there is a difference)
- Will you teach me how to start and run a business or find a job?
- Do you have peer supervision groups set up to help support me in the process?

There are many other things to consider when searching for a massage school and I have more information on my website.

Enrich Your Life by Different Massage Styles

Touch is an important aspect in every human beings life: the touch of a mother, the touch of your spouse, and the touch of your partner. Since the increase in our understanding of the human body and it muscular structure, specialists have come forth and introduced different styles of massages that stimulate the body such as: foot, chair, hot stone, and spa massages.

A foot massage is correctly performed by first soaking the feet in Epsom salt, and than after the foot is dried (preferably with a soft terry cloth towel, however any towel will work) begin with a gentle rubbing of the whole foot. The next step commences with the by rubbing the top of the feet. The third step moves to the sole of the foot and depending on the needs of the individual receiving the massage continue rubbing gently or firmly. The final step in perfecting the foot massage is massaging the toes.

Traditionally, we think of a massage with someone who is lying face down being rubbed from head to toe, typically naked with only a towel for apparel. However, over the past twenty years David Palmer introduced the benefits in receiving a chair massage. This style is less expensive and can be received anywhere there is a comfortable chair to sit in with the same benefits of reducing tension and stress, however specially designed chairs have been developed to increase comfort and relaxation.

Another emerging style is a hot stone massage, developed in Sweden. This method is perfect for individuals who find the traditional full body massage more rigorous than comforting. Basalt stones which retain heat through out the session are used in this style of massage. These stones weigh anywhere from one pound to five pounds. The masseuse rubs the body with a smoothed stone pressing more firmly in areas where the muscles are tight and tense.

A spa massage differs from your traditional full body massage because it adds sweet smelling aromas, oils (lavender is preferred), gentle music, and creams to create a more relaxing atmosphere. With a spa massage you will hear more about presentation and atmosphere than about the massage itself.

TENSION 101

The Basics

Imagine a car that’s idling too fast. It’s revved up and working hard but nothing useful is happening. The motor’s burning more fuel, creating more pollution and experiencing added wear and tear.

Well, it’s kind of the same with muscle tension. It doesn’t help you move and it certainly doesn’t make your muscles stronger. So really your muscles are working hard but not doing anything useful or accomplishing anything.

In fact, muscle tension causes a lot of wear and tear on your body. It strains tendons (which hold your muscles to your bones). It pulls joints tighter together (leading to grinding/crunching sounds and worn out cartilage). It limits your movement, interferes with your co-ordination and may even make you more accident-prone.

Tension also burns up the fuel in your muscles (which makes you feel tired) and creates toxic waste products called “metabolites” (the equivalent of car exhaust) which fatigue your muscles and make them feel sore and achy.

Why Control Tension

–You’ll feel more comfortable.
–You’ll prevent problems from occurring (like kinks in your neck).
–You just know from experience that tension isn’t good.

2 Causes Of Tension

1. Stress is one of the major sources of muscle tension. When under stress, you become like a turtle trying to pull its head into its shell. So your shoulder muscles might simply tighten up or they might round forward and lift up as your head pulls back. And if your stress level is high, you may actually notice your shoulders around your ears.

2. Just sitting or staying still for periods of time causes your muscles to tighten up. By remaining “static”, you’re basically training your muscles to lock your back or neck in a certain posture. Then when you begin to move, your muscles remain tense in an effort to maintain your position. Plus it takes some time for your muscles to realize that they can let go and relax. So the longer you sit without moving, the more you train your muscles to lock into position and the longer it takes to release them.

Key Tension Areas

Simply based on the way tension is created, the areas most vulnerable to tension are your neck, shoulders and back. Although tension can develop in any muscle in your body, these are the areas that are most commonly affected.

Tenderness And Tension

One of the best indicators of tension is tenderness, which is the discomfort you feel when you press on a muscle.

Blood vessels normally deliver oxygen and nutrients to a muscle and flush away waste products. But, when your muscles are tense, they’re essentially squeezing their own blood vessels.

So now, the muscles are working hard and creating lots of waste that’s not being washed out of the muscle. And as these “metabolites” (i.e. waste) begin to accumulate, they start to irritate pain nerves.

If the tension is significant, you’ll actually start to feel achy. If the tension is less severe, the nerves become sensitive and any added stimulus, like a squeeze to the muscle, can cause discomfort.

1 Easy Way To Relieve Tension

Massage can play an important role in helping you deal with your tension and your massage professional, like a mechanic, can adjust how fast your “muscle motors” are idling.

Basically, massage does two things:

First, it helps induce a relaxation response. This reduces the common defensive reactions in your body, including that “turtle-in-the-shell” action of your neck muscles. Relaxation also causes your brain and nervous system to slow down, which in turn lowers the tension level of all the muscles in your body.

Second, massage pulls and stretches, which physically releases the muscle. In addition, the sensations that your muscles feel, both conscious and subconscious, give your brain information about the level of tension that exists in your muscles. This helps your nervous system adjust your muscles to a normal level of tone.

Remember too that the effect of a massage on tension is almost instantaneous. You feel the tension leaving your body immediately. You don’t have to wait days or weeks to see results.

Also, regular massage both reduces your tension and trains your muscles to maintain a lower level of tension.

And when your muscles are healthy and relaxed, they won’t be tender and you won’t feel any discomfort, even when you’re receiving a massage.

1 Easy Way To Prevent Tension

One of the areas most likely to get tense is the shoulders.

(In the nearly 8 years that I’ve been doing chair massage, the shoulders are still the Number 1 area people ask to have massaged because they’re experiencing tension there.)

The muscle that makes up the shoulders is called the trapezius, often referred to as the “traps”. It’s an easy name to remember because this is the muscle that “traps” a lot of tension.

The good news is you can help prevent tension from building up in this muscle.

If you’re sitting or standing still for any significant period of time, be sure to move this muscle through a full range of motion, at least once in a while.

Something you can try is the “20/20 Rule”:

For every 20 minutes that you are inactive, spend 20 seconds moving.

This helps ensure that your muscles don’t have the chance to lock into any particular position.

Use the two simple exercises in this article to bring your “traps” through a full range of motion and keep your muscles relaxed and tension-free.

Understanding and Unlocking Tissue Memory

While your brain may not always be able to recall past memories, your body will never forget them. Researchers have documented that the body stores pain and traumatic memories in muscles and connective tissues. Storing pain and traumatic memories can cause unhealthiness and contribute to the development of disease. These painful, traumatic memories have not been allowed release and become stagnant energy in the body. Massage therapy can be a valuable tool in unlocking these stored traumas, as well as be effective in restoring health and wellness to the body.

Most traumatic experiences are caused by stressful events. When your body is overloaded with stress it can’t efficiently handle, the trauma goes directly into your muscles and tissues until it can be freed. Strengthening the body’s ability to cope with stress will reduce the likelihood of the trauma being stored within your body, and will also help release it immediately. Bodyworkers can utilize massage therapy techniques to unlock and free trauma, but only if the body is prepared for its release. One particular type of massage therapy that can aid in this process is myofascial release. It works to free restrictions in the muscles and surrounding tissues, and allows for the release of trauma as well as the restoration of health.

Massage therapy will assist in restoring physical health to your client, but in these circumstances, emotional health may also need support. Many people with these types of stored traumas can benefit from therapy sessions with a qualified counselor. Combining these two aspects are truly necessary for recovery. The release of traumatic memories from the body’s muscles and tissues will allow your client’s body and mind to heal effectively.

Learn more about using myofascial release techniques to help unlock stored memories in the bodies of your clients by reading the entire article here.
