There is hardly any other creed in the world of fitness and weight loss that can mess with the so called “fat burning zone”. You are told this zone is the ultimate method to burn your fat and thus drop weight. Good night, fellas…

So what is the “Fat Burning Zone”?
In gyms, on television or sports articles in magazines and anywhere else, it is customary that people trying to lose body fat (often reduced to “weight loss”) are required to perform their cardio workouts at a certain heart frequency (heart beats per minute). This “fat burning zone” usually is set around 120 to 130 heart beats per minute.

This is how “experts” justify the fat burning zone
It is a fact, that your body uses more fat as energy source the more slowly you do your workout. The more intense your workout gets, the more glucose is used instead of fat to provide energy for your activities. So this sounds good? You do cardio at a slow pace (at a lower heart frequency) and fat is primarily used and burnt. Until now, there is nothing wrong in the above explanation, but regarding fat loss, burning fat is not important at all! And all we want is to lose fat!

What do you mean by: “burning fat” is not “losing fat”
Burning fat is just the chemical process happening when your body tries to provide energy for your activities. Losing Fat on the other hand really means dropping weight by eliminating body fat. Your body uses fat and glucose to provide energy, but when using fat (actually fatty acids) it does not necessarily mean sending your body fat to hell.

Prepare for the light…
As everybody already learned at school, the only thing that decides about putting on weight or dropping it is your energy balance. Yes, it is all about calories. Calorie intake is less than calorie consumption - fantastic, you lose weight (by eating less than you need). Calorie consumption is higher than calorie intake - great, you lose weight again (by doing sports, etc.).
Now you know it is all about calories, why in hell should you do slow cardio workouts then?
You didn\’t get it? Here is an example:

Test 1: Non intensive workout
When running at a heart frequency of 120 (the “fat burning zone”), about 75% of the energy is provided by burning fat, 25% by glucose. Because a workout at 120bpm is not very intense, assume you burn like 280kcal in one hour (this applies to a 155lbs person, running at about 5mph).
So about 210kcal are “gone” due to burning fat, and only 70kcal due to burning glucose.

Test 2: Intensive workout
When running at a heart frequency of 160, about 50% of the energy is provided by burning fat and 50% by glucose. Because a workout at 160bpm is much more intensive, assume you burn like 500kcal in one hour (this applies to a 155lbs person, running at about 8-9mph). Because half the energy was obtained by fat burning, about 250 “fat calories” are eliminated.

Now it\’s getting interesting.
Fact #1: As far as only calories (please, please, understand this now and forever) count when trying to lose fat, workout 2 is more than twice as effective as workout 1 (500kcal vs. 280kcal)!

Fact #2: Even if your trainer or whatever “expert” was right (and they are not!), you would burn more fat (which actually is of no interest in a weight loss sense!) when doing the more intense workout number 2 (250 “fat calories” vs. 210 “fat calories”)!
Did you get that? Even if your story tellers were right about “burning fat = losing fat”, you would burn more “fat calories” in the second workout.

In order to get the best possible results you must first know a little anatomy and physiology.

Your core muscle is not your abdominals as you know it. Your abdominals or rectus abdominis is the outermost muscle of your mid section right under your skin. This muscle causes your body to flex your trunk. The core muscle or transverse abdominis is deeper and surrounds your abdomen like a belt and supports your spine. Your pelvis or hip bone is right at the center of your body. It can be out of alignment due to postural imbalances.

The most common postural imbalance is anterior pelvic tilt. You can tell if you have an anterior pelvic tilt by simply looking in the mirror. Put on a pair of pants with a belt and look at your side profile in the mirror and relax. If your belt is slanted down to the front, you have anterior pelvic tilt. You may notice an arch in your back which is due to this anterior tilt of your pelvis.

You MUST NOT have an anterior tilt while you are performing core exercises.

You must learn how to rotate your pelvis to the posterior. To do this, the first step is to isometricallly contract your gluteal muscles, or put simply “squeeze your butt.” This must be maintained during the duration of the exercise. The next part is to contract the muscle known as the transverse abdominis more commonly known as the “core.” This is called the draw in motion. It is simply sucking your belly button in towards your spine. Regardless of the position of your body, you will now be in proper postural alignment.

The simple core exercise you will do is the front plank and side plank.

To perform the front plank exercise simply lie on the floor face down. With your forearms and fists on the floor, raise your hips up off the floor until they are parallel with the floor. Hold for as long as you can keep proper form, then switch positions.

To execute the side plank lie on your side. With your forearm and fist touching the floor, raise your hips off the floor as high as they go. Your body and especially spine should be in a straight line. Make sure you contract your gluteals and draw in your core the entire time. If you cannot maintain this position rest, and repeat.

Spend a few minutes holding these static positions.

When you have evenly performed a few sets of right, left and center planks finish your day off with a set of as many crunches as you can. To advance the exercise, you can simply transition from front to side planks continuously with the front plank, without letting your knees touch. Time how long you can hold it for and try to advance.

You will find your mid section will feel tighter after the first day! You are NOT burning fat, but strengthening and tightening your core muscles.

After a month time, you and your friends will be able to see a noticeable difference. To get even better results and burn fat make sure you maintain a healthy low fat diet and perform cardio and weight training 3-4 times per week.

Weight Loss is Not a Sprint

There is no way around it. Losing weight and keeping it off for longer is going to take time. Too many people are in a hurry to lose weight. The fact is that it is this race to weight loss that prevents them from actually succeeding.

Most people want to lose weight as quickly as possible. However following this pattern almost always results in failure. People are always on the lookout for a quick fix that will enable them to shed the pounds and get the body that they want in a couple of months. This is just wishful thinking, if you don\’t believe me ask people who are overweight how many times they have failed to lose weight. The truth is that quick weight loss is a gimmick. If it wasn\’t why do so many people have so much trouble losing weight? People never learn and they will continue to jump from one quick fix to another, leading to one failure after another, until they just give up.

The problem is that we now live in a society where we want everything as soon as we possibly can. Patience is no longer considered a virtue. This is true in our working lives and in our own personal lives. When it comes to losing weight people are not interested in what they are going to look like 12 months down the road. They want to look good now; they don\’t want to waste time in reaching their goals. People are prepared to purchase anything as long as that product is appealing to them and doesn\’t seem to involve too much work.

There are many diets and weight loss products that claim you will be able to lose anything from 20-40 pounds in a month. People believe the hype and any logic just seems to evaporate. This happens because the products appeal to your emotional senses and when that happens, logic becomes irrelevant. Now on the face of it many of these claims will sound wonderful to you, but unfortunately your body will not share this joy. Any sudden and drastic changes to your lifestyle will lead your body to fight you every step of the way. This is why after a short initial period of weight loss, any results you may have been getting will slow down to a crawl or more than likely stop completely. This is such a common story amongst people who try to lose weight.

There are two things I want to mention. Fact number 1 is that 1 pound of weight roughly consists of 3500 calories. Fact number 2 is that if you wanted to lose 30 pounds of weight within a one month period, then you would have to find a way to remove and burn 26500 calories a week from your current diet. This equates to 3500 calories a day. No mean feat when you think that the average intake of calories for a woman is between 1800-2400 calories a day. It would mean a massive reduction in the food that you are eating and taking part in long periods of intensive exercise. Most people haven\’t the slightest idea of what the results of such changes would do to their well being?

The human body is a hugely complex entity. Not many people know that their bodies are actually large defence mechanisms. Its main role is to protect you and to keep you alive any way that it can. If it feels you need to be protected it will pull out all the stops, completely ignoring what you might want. Although your body is more than capable of change if done right, it likes continuity. If your life has been filled with no exercise and bad food for a long time, then this is the way that your body has got used to living.

When suddenly out of the blue you cut back heavily on the food that your body is used to receiving and impose a rigorous exercise program on it what do you think will happen? Your body will percieve these new changes as a threat, and will take action to counter this threat. It will go into starvation mode and this will lead it to hang onto all the calories it can. Because it is not getting the food it is used to, it will put your metabolism into starvation mode. This means it will do everything it can to hang onto any calories, simply because it thinks you must be starving.

Apart from this, because you jump into a new lifestyle so quickly, your mind will fight you on this because it hasn\’t come to terms with what you are trying to do. It will do this by sending you constant messages telling you that it is too hard, you cannot do this, let us go back to the way it was, and so on. This is why at some point you will have to give up. How can you succeed when both your mind and your body are fighting against you?

You must understand that your body will accept change more easily if that change comes in small steps. Your mind and body will not accept change if it is done overnight. As time goes on add more activity, but do it steps. Using this method allows the changes because it is in your body\’s abilities to do so.

So Time is the golden rule for weight loss, and remember that you are where you are today because of the choices that you have made. If you want to be in a different place then make different choices.

Many foods are being claimed as super foods for weight loss, due to the positive effect that they have on our health and their ability to help us shed the pounds. Not all of the foods which have these so-called powers are exotic or expensive, although some are new to us in the West.

Fruits and vegetables have long been recognized as having the ability to assist weight loss, mainly due to their high fiber content which means they help us to feel full. That struck me as a bit odd, but I’ve decided to simply stick to my current routine (eating relatively healthy with light cardio every now and then) and add Phentramin to it. Any results will be due to Phentramin, and not me working out.

One Week

So after consuming 14 pills (2 per day; one in the morning, and one in the early afternoon) I am somewhat dismayed to notice only a slight change in weight with a total loss only adding up to 3 pounds. Since this is my first time taking any kind of supplement I was hoping for a more dramatic change in my weight, though I suppose that losing 12 pounds every month for essentially doing nothing different is an acceptable outcome.

One thing I have noticed is that my mouth was excessively dry for the first few days that I took it, but after simply drinking more water (around 12 glasses a day) I’ve yet to experience it again. If anything, I’ll lose a bit of weight and I’ll be well hydrated.

Two Weeks

I’ve now taken 28 pills and my results are not that much different than they were at the end of last week- I’ve lost a total of 5 pounds, and only 2 pounds during this last week. I’d be a bit more upset, but my eating habits have not consciously changed (though I will admit that I am eating less), and the weight that I’ve lost has yet to re-appear. I can’t quite squeeze into a few pairs of jeans I wore a couple of years ago, but I figure that it’s not too far off.

As well, I have not had any side effects to speak of this week. No dry mouth, no irritability, no nothing. That I do like.

Three Weeks

Now at 42 pills and still going strong. Something interesting happened mid-week, though: I noticed that I was really jumpy, and that feeling kept going on, and on, and on… you get the point. I was like the energizer bunny, but probably twice as annoying.

Oh, and I’m happy to say that I’ve lose 12 pounds, and 7 of them came during this last week. Perhaps it was a result of a case of mild hyperactivity, but I’ll take it. I’m almost a full two sizes smaller around my waistline, and I’m still eating and drinking whenever I feel like it.

Month End

So I’ve taken the entire bottle (60 pills) and I have mixed emotions. On one hand, I’m glad and somewhat relieved that I no longer have to take diet pills and I can say that I am not taking any supplements for my weight loss. On the other hand, however, I’m disappointed- I really enjoyed the increased energy and enthusiasm I had during the last couple of weeks.

But I’m sure none of you reading this will care about that. What’s the number, you ask? Well, last week I said I had lost 12 pounds in total. Take a guess at what I lost during my fourth and final week.

If you guessed 6 pounds, for a total of 18 pounds lost, you were absolutely incorrect. I lost a total of 20 pounds (8 during the last week) over the course of the month literally making no effort to do anything different other than take Phentramin. I did eat less, but not because I wanted to, but because I wasn’t hungry as often.
