UPVC Windows - An Attractive Home Improvement Option

Everyone wants their home to be visually appealing, but in some cases, this requires a bit of remodeling on the part of the homeowner. Not only do windows and doors provide natural lighting for the home, they also lend beauty and personality to otherwise ordinary homes. So if you are thinking of remodeling, an attractive update to your home may come in the form of upvc windows.

There are several different replacement windows to consider when you are updating your home. The styles of replacement windows usually vary to fit with the style of the home architecture. Some of the most popular styles of replacement windows include casement windows, sliders, double hung windows, bay windows, bow windows, garden windows, and skylights.

Casement windows normally consist of one or two panes and are hinged on one side. They are opened by rotating a crank and generally only open 15 to 30 degrees, which is enough to let in light, but not much else. Slider windows consist of two offset sashes and operate much like a sliding glass door. Double hung windows allow air to flow either from the top or the bottom of the window. They consist of two offset slashes that move vertically.

You would normally see bay windows in the living rooms or other formal areas of the home. They are three sided window arrangements that extend from the exterior wall of the house. Such windows allow a room to feel larger and also offer a little extra space for seating and more.

Bow windows are somewhat similar to bay windows in that they project from the exterior of a home. The difference is that a bow window consists of a series of windows with each sash set at an angle, so that the window curves gracefully outward.

To replace an older kitchen window, many people choose garden windows. Like the bay window and the bow window, these windows also extend from the face of the house. However, they are much smaller than bay windows and bow windows. Many homeowners place their potted plants in garden windows achieving the effect of a mini garden indoors.

Skylights are set in the roof of a home and provide direct lighting from the outside. They are often used to improve the lighting in rooms that are naturally dim and include weather tight seals to keep out the elements.

Each of these options has recently become available in the popular upvc windows style. Upvc windows are now available in such a wide array of styles and colors that they do not detract from the style and architecture of the home, as many homeowners complained they did when they were first introduced to the market.

Double glazing upvc windows are a popular option with homeowners wishing to update their homes via replacement windows. These windows are highly efficient as they are constructed from two panes of glass that create an insulating pocket of air, keeping out drafts and providing a weather tight seal.

So if you are considering updating your home, double glazing upvc windows may be just the thing to give your home a new look without putting a major dent in your bank account. Be sure to shop around in order to find a reputable supplier and get the best value for your money. Just remember to be as diligent as you would with any major purchase when looking for replacement windows.

Window Styles

Before choosing windows for a new home or windows to replace your current units, you should be aware of your alternatives. Depending on the manufacturer, each of these styles is available in wood, plastic, aluminum, and combinations of those materials.

This article will discuss the different styles without regard to the material, hardware, or the windowpane.

Hung Window:

A hung window is a vertical slider, whereby the inner window unit slides up and down in the frame. It gets its name because the window that moves is connected to weights via a rope. This is the most common window in older homes. Because of the way the window is designed there must be some clearance, even if it is small, to allow the window to slide in the vertical channels. Because of this necessary clearance, this window is the worst when it comes to air ingress.

Double Hung Window:

Very similar to the hung window with the exception that the upper window in the frame has the ability to move down. This allows for the escape of hot air through the upper window, while cool air enters the room. Because the top window must have clearance to slide in the window frame channels as well as the lower window, air ingress is worse than a hung window. If you are purchasing a double hung window, make sure that it is actually double hung and will open from bottom to top and top to bottom. Many retailers will call a simple hung window a double hung window.

Slider Window:

A slider window moves horizontally within a frame. In some cases, both windows will slide in opposite directions. These windows have become very common for low-end housing, as they are inexpensive to manufacturer. However, because clearance is required between the window and the frame in order for the window to be able to slide there is always some air ingress.

Casement Window:

A casement widow is usually hinged on one side and opens in the same manner as a door. Most casement windows use a crank mechanism of opening and closing which holds the window in almost any open position. Some casement windows use a pivot instead of a hinge and the window opens from a point approximately 25 % of the width of the window. Because of the mechanical cranking mechanism, the window can be closed very tightly against the elements. A well designed, casement window is the best defense against air ingress if you require a window that opens. The negative for casement windows is that screens must be placed on the inside of the window frame.

Awning Window:

An awning window is a casement window that has been turned on its side with the hinges at the top. The advantage to this design is that the window can remain open during periods of light rainfall.

Hopper Window:

Definitely not as common as the awning window, this is a casement window that has been turned on its side with the hinges on the bottom. Its only advantage is that small pets cannot exit the window as easily as they can with a regular casement window or awning window.

Fixed or Picture Window:

These windows are fixed and do not open. They are usually part of a larger window arrangement that includes windows that open on the side or bottom of the fixed window.

Skylight:

A skylight is a window that may or may not open that is mounted on a flat or sloped roof.

Upgrading Home Window Security

Keeping the bad guys or any other intruder out is not as simple as installing an expensive secure door. Windows offer the burglar a terrific alternative for access to your home. Window security enhancements are every bit as important to your home and family security as any doorway.

Intruders like windows for several reasons. First, because they are made out of glass, they can easily be broken. Obviously, this gives a burglar free roam of your house. Also, older windows are quite easy to jimmy open, or otherwise defeat the simple latch style locks typical in older windows.

Another contributing factor for burglars joy of windows is the privacy offered. Many homes have windows that are somewhat obscured by bushes or shrubs. Under the cover of a good solid shrub, an intruder has plenty of time to practice her craft.

The security of your homes windows can easily be made more robust with just a few simple tips:

Security bars - one of the ugliest and most destructive things you can do to your home, neighbors, and neighborhood, they absolutely will discourage burglars from trying to enter your home. They also add fuel to the proverbial fire by reducing property values and discouraging otherwise good upstanding neighbors from moving into your neighborhood. Then again, there’s the little problem of preventing people from exiting in an emergency situation too.

Laminates and films - these materials are applied to the glass and serve to improve the overall strength of the glass and eliminate shattering shards of glass in the event of accidental breakage. These types of films are available from many locations, they can serve multiple purposes such as filtering light in the summer, and they can be cut to fit any sized window you might have.

These protective films are not only a great deterrent for burglars, but they also provide a completely unobstructed view of the great outdoors. Even films that offer UV protection cause only negligible reduction in light entering your home. If you are having new windows installed, these film options are readily available from most manufacturers.

Which brings us to the subject of locks. Aftermarket locks are available to fit any window type or design available. They are generally very affordable, do not effect your view and greatly improve the security of your homes windows.

Lets face it, you home is only as secure as the easiest entry point for an intruder. Even in the most minor of intrusion incidents your family is put at risk. For only a few dollars, you can prevent regrets before they happen.

Why You Should Consider UPVC Replacement Windows For Your Home

When it comes to home improvement, UPVC replacement windows can certainly add value to your home. People who are looking around a home with a view to buying it are usually relieved that replacing double glazing is one home improvement task they will not have to tackle. But there are other advantages to installing replacement windows and doors. Here are some aspects to consider if your remodelling plan includes windows replacement.

The choice of windows replacement material is an important one. For house windows, the main choices are timber and UPVC (also called PVC or PVCu) and UPVC has significant advantages over the timber framed house windows. When reinstalling windows you should consider the amount of effort you will have to spend on maintaining the windows once they are installed. Timber needs to be repainted frequently and is not easy to keep clean.

In contrast, UPVC windows require very little cleaning. They are not likely to rot, as wood is, and you won’t have the regular expense of undercoat and gloss paint. To maintain your vinyl double glass windows, all you will need is soap and water and a soft cloth. That will keep your replacement windows in peak condition for years.

Cleaning aside, when it comes to home improvement and remodelling, there are other advantages to UPVC for your replacement windows. Double glazing in this type of window is weathertight - that means no stray raindrops trickling in. And you will save on central heating two. UPVC double glass windows consist of an insulative membrane between two sheets of glass. This is guaranteed to keep the cold out and the warmth in, and because they work so well, your heating bills will be reduced. Vinyl windows and doors are reckoned to halve heat loss from the home, which will result in a considerable saving.

If you are interested in aesthetics, then you can get matching PVCu exterior home doors to complement your replacement windows. Both replacement windows and doors feature a secure locking mechanism which may incorporate a Yale lock. In addition, many modern vinyl windows can be locked in a slightly open position to permit air flow.

One of the home improvement projects that many people take on is building conservatories. There are many home improvement articles which will help you with your conservatory construction project. You can also buy all the materials and build it yourself. It is likely that your conservatory construction plan will include sliding patio doors and outside doors with UPVC doors. This applies both to exterior doors and those leading to the house. The reason for this is to enhance the heat retention properties of the conservatory, so when you are ready to install, vinyl patio doors and vinyl windows will certainly be on your list.

If you are thinking about reinstalling windows you can choose almost any style that suits you for your house windows. Casement windows, sash windows, tinted windows - there are several types of UPVC windows to choose from. This means that when doing a home improvement project, your replacement windows need not be dull.

Interior Design - Windows Reveal the Soul of a Good House

“I know you here in the darkness,
How you sit in the throne of my eyes,
At peace, and look out of the windows
In glad surprise.”

- D.H. Lawrence

Venus ascends in the western night sky, and then retreats below the horizon as, hours later, the morning sun rises in the west and spends its good light on a new day.

To see this glorious view, thrill seekers might travel to a mountaintop, a desert or maybe a stretch of beach. Dave Florek can take it all in from his small but generous Van Nuys bedroom.

“I love seeing the moon and stars,” Florek said. “Then you wake up and see the sun rise. This room is just a nice place to be.”

Florek and his wife, Leigh Podgorski, renovated the single-room, second-story addition to their home last year. Although a small bath and closet were added and a captain’s bed with drawers was custom-built for the room, the choice of windows - in several styles - is what has made the room more than just a place to sleep, he says.

Above the headboard of their bed, which abuts the room’s western wall, a small octagonal window with mullions was installed. It maintains privacy while allowing a beautiful stream of early evening light - and later, moonbeams and starshine - to stream across the bed.

There’s another charming outcome that Florek likes. The intruding light casts a shadow of the quaint window against the opposite wall, where a casement window has been installed.

“The original idea was to put a couple of the octagonals on the front of the house. But it didn’t work. Yet, what we have is better than what I’d originally wanted,” Florek says.

When Florek and Podgorski began their renovation, the west wall of the 10- by 15-foot room was solid. By installing a large casement window, they gained a full view of the sunrise over trees and their roofline - with no loss of privacy.

But they didn’t stop there. To give the room a sense of greater dimension, the couple installed a bay window on the north wall where they can sit and gaze at their pool or read.

“The room is so small - there’s no place for a chest of drawers. That’s why we had the captain’s bed built. But the windows, they provide … space,” Florek says.

And there’s something else, something less tangible. The room feels safe and yet within the grasp of nature’s glory. Or, as Shakespeare wrote in Cymbeline, “Under these windows, white and azure laced, with blue of heaven’s own tinct.”

‘I’m Looking Through You, What Do I See?’

The Beatles weren’t singing about window design when they recorded I’m Looking Through You. But they may have been suggesting how transparent human beings can be - especially when choosing windows!

Are you hip and contemporary? Or are you loyal to tradition? Is your budget tight? Or is money not an issue, whereas comfort, energy efficiency and style are? I’m looking through you.

Between-the-glass blinds are a great way to mitigate intense light, and can be raised and lowered at will. Between-the-glass fabric shades also are available in many door and window styles - casement and double-hung - and don’t require cleaning since they are protected by windowpanes. But these products are pricey.

Less apparent are the health benefits of these types of windows. Shades within a double pane are dust free and therefore ideal for people with allergies. So maybe this choice would be more a necessity than a luxury. Or both. What do I see?

Aaron Adirim, president of California Deluxe Windows Industries Inc.® in Chatsworth, says the health benefits of custom-made windows can be profound.

“Some clients say they stop taking allergy medicine after they install our windows. Or the smell of the skunk in their yard is gone. They also report that they can finally sleep - even where there is nonstop traffic and the ocean,” says Adirim. “We always ask people why they are thinking of replacing their windows. We want to know what issues are disturbing them the most.”

Adirim’s company has created enormous windows that welcome in the panoramic sun-drenched California landscape, while keeping out critters, pests and even natural disasters.

“An unobstructed view of nature is so breathtaking; you can’t believe you’re in your own home. You feel like you can touch the flowers, touch the blue sky,” he says.

But if homeowners aren’t careful, the desire for a seemingly open environment can wreak havoc during California’s wild fire season. Adirim says he has received letters and calls from clients who believe they averted disaster because they installed excellent windows.

“During fires near Upland, many families were evacuated,” Adirim says. “When they returned, the interiors of their homes were covered with a half-inch of ash. One of our clients was evacuated too. But when he returned home, the house was spotless; the white carpet was spotless. He called and said, ‘Your windows saved my house.’”

In Glad Surprise

Last year, Morgan Kearns purchased a home, circa 1920s, near a park. She soon realized she needed new windows.

Despite the cozy nature of her cottage, a previous owner had replaced the original wood window frames with the aluminum variety. Aesthetically, the windows were all wrong. And they did a lousy job of keeping out the wind and cold.

“The house has nice wood floors with in-laid wood. But it just didn’t have character with aluminum windows. They kept the house from fulfilling its potential. They were something I had to overlook as I looked through them at the beauty that surrounds me,” says Kearns.

Kearns did her homework and found windows that were appropriate for her home. Fortunately, she also found an able contractor.

“I found the right guy. He respected my ideas. But he came up with ideas I never would have thought of,” she says.

As her new windows were being installed, Kearns recalled the many renovation projects she oversaw in her previous Woodland Hills home. There were problems with materials, tardy workers and inaccurate bids that sapped her resources. In hindsight, she says she may have tried to do too much at once.

This time, though, everything went as planned. “I loved just focusing on windows,” she says. And when the new windows were installed and Kearns could sit within while gazing at the gardens without, she realized that of all the changes she’d made in the past, upgrading her windows was the most emotionally satisfying.

“It just felt like a home. I just really enjoy sitting and looking out the windows. I’ll be content for quite a while,” she says.

The interior window sill is also referred to as the window stool. Window sills may be made of wood, PVC, slate, granite or marble and even blue limestone.

Interior window sill use

Interior window sills may just be part of the decor or may be used for display. Artifacts, curtains, flower vases or even dolls to suit your style of decoration. Interior window sill types

Interior window sills are made of different materials. They are available in slate, limestone, granite, marble and the traditional wood. Modern day interior window sills are also made of synthetic materials like PVC. Old wooden boards can be replaced with new PVC window sills, which could have rounded, or straight angles. You can also use decorative end caps to give your interior window sill a designer look.

PVC interior window sill features

Modern day interior decor combines safety with aesthetics. Besides giving your home a designer look, PVC interior window sills also combine other important features. These PVC designer interior window sills are water resistant and fire resistant as well. Window Shutters and Blinds

Keeping your windows in style is important for keeping your house in style. That is why it is important to choose the right permanent window accessories with care so that you don’t have to replace them the minute styles change. Here are some good tips about how to make window shutters and blinds keep windows looking in style even when the styles change.

- Choose window shutters that can be painted. This will save you a lot money if the color of window shutters you want today is not so great in a few years. Instead of buying new shutters, you only have to buy paint to make the change.

- Stay neutral when selecting blinds. Keep blinds in your home a neutral color - white, cream, or off white are all good choices. This will prevent you from having to replace outdated colors. If you want to add color to your windows, do so with curtains and other window treatments.

- Choose blind and shutter styles that are plain. Styles of window blinds and shutters that are plain will never go out of style. Choose the designs that do not have trendy patterns, new colors, or intricate curves or cuts.

- Buy high quality shutters and blinds. The higher the quality, the longer you can count on shutters and blinds lasting.

Shutters and blinds may seem like minor accessories when it comes to the windows of your home, but they are among the most expensive. So it is important to choose them wisely so that they will last a long time and never go out of style.
