A Q&A on Explicit Internet Domain Name Litigation

Let me ask you a question. Would you voluntarily leave your job to join another company that would essentially cost you more money to work for and they can change regulations and policies over you at any moment? Wow. What an exciting opportunity! Excuse my sarcasm if you noticed any.

If you think that whole scenario is all make believe then you are mistaken. That is exactly what some organizations want to do with adult web sites on the internet. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, otherwise known as the ICNN, the Internet’s key oversight agency, is nearing a vote on creating a voluntary “.xxx” domain name for pornography sites.

The decision ultimately could hinge on whether “.xxx” has the support of the adult-entertainment industry, and many porn sites are strongly opposed. Porn sites are largely concerned that the domain name, while billed as voluntary, would make it easier for governments to later mandate its use.

Here are some other helpful answers for you concerning this witch-hunt:

What are domain names?

Behind every machine connected to the Internet is a series of four numbers known as an Internet Protocol address. Domain names were created as an easy-to-remember shortcut. It’s much easier to remember “ap.org” than “165.1.59.220.” When you type a domain name into a Web browser or an e-mail message, your computer checks a series of domain name servers to match the name to the equivalent numeric address.

Where does “.xxx” fall?

The current proposal grew out of the 2004 round of bids, which ICANN specifically restricted to sponsored names, meaning their use would be limited to a specific community, be it the travel industry or porn sites. ICM Registry Inc., a Florida startup founded by entrepreneurs with backgrounds in domain names and U.K. Internet companies, sought its creation. If approved, its use would be voluntary, just as with any other domain.

Why has a decision taken so long?

Of the 10 applications, only “.xxx” and “.post” for postal services remain pending. After considerable debate, ICANN rejected the “.xxx” proposal last May, but ICM came back with a new plan with more specifics. Even before that got a vote, ICM returned with yet another proposal to address concerns about enforcement abilities and the independence of a nonprofit body that would set rules governing the domain’s use. Each step meant a period for public commenting and opposition among adult Web sites and religious groups remains strong.

What happens if the name is rejected?

That would largely depend on the wording of ICANN’s resolution, but ICANN rarely throws out a bid outright, meaning ICM likely could return later with a revision to address any concerns. However, ICANN appears ready to close the 2004 round of bids as it prepares to launch a new round. ICM also could seek to have the decision reviewed through ICANN channels or file a lawsuit if it believes ICANN failed to follow its own guidelines.

What happens if the name is approved?

Assuming the U.S. government does not wield the veto power it has over ICANN, “.xxx” would be entered into the domain name system within months. ICM would establish a program to set aside certain names, such as trademarks and geographic places. Web sites wanting any remaining name would sign up with an approved registration company, which would forward to ICM $60 for each name sold. No site would be required to use the domain, and sites would be free to keep their existing names under “.com” and elsewhere. Parents could set their filtering software to block all “.xxx” sites, although that alone won’t stop all such sites given its voluntary nature.

Shouldn’t “.xxx” be mandatory then?

Mandating the domain’s use would raise significant problems, namely how to define pornography. Should any site with nudity be classified? What about artistic or educational sites, such as ones on breast feeding? And who should decide, given conflicts between pornography and speech laws around the world?

“One of the criteria is that it must have general support among the industry it’s supposed to serve, and it does not,” explains an expert at PC World. “Not one single webmaster or adult video producer is in favor of ‘.xxx.”

Score The Killer Domain Name That Will Suck In Visitors To Your Site

You want to build a niche web site that works. You have figured out the topic, found some great keywords and now you need a domain name that really rocks.

Let’s pick a domain name!

Please keep the following things in mind:
1) The domain name needs to have your main keyword / phrase in it *exactly* as it is. Example: Your main phrase is “cool widgets”. The domain should be something like “the-best-coolwidgets. com” NOT “the-best-widgets.com”

2) Your domain name needs to be very clear on what you are providing. In other words, a benefit statement. You want the domain name to catch the eye of the human reader as well as the search engines. When you read the domain name, it needs to communicate exactly what they can expect when they come to your site, and set them in a positive frame of mind. In other words, they see your domain name, and they say to themselves “Now that looks like a good site. Just what I was looking for”, BEFORE they ever get to your site.

You can come up with some unique, strange or otherwise hip domain name for your site, but unless you are terrific at buzz marketing or have lots of money to build a brand you are better off sticking to a domain name that will work right out of the bag.

Since you’ve already decided on your main keyword phrase, this step should be a fairly easy one to do.

Go to one of the domain register sites to do your selection process. (You can also visit the expired domains sites if you want to check out domain names that have expired. This can be a good resource for ideas on names as well as a place to purchase one. Here are some to check out, expiredwatch.com, expired-domain-names-pro.com, redhotdomainnames.com, expireddomainsleuth.com) We use GoDaddy.com for most of our domain name business, although there are many others to choose from for buying domains. When you arrive at GoDaddy.com you can enter in potential domain names in their search tool and see what is available. They will also give you alternative names to think about buying as well. Try several variations on your keyword phrase in a domain name and see what come up. Stick to .com names if you can. Others such as .info can be cheaper to buy up front but may not return as good of results in the SE’s.

ONce you have found a domain name that has your keyword phrase in it and sells your nice in a short catchy name you need to buy it. At domain registrars you are often offered the chance to buy at extra cost privacy for your domain. This means that no one can look up your contact information. This can be useful if you are trying to screen yourself from folks. However it is not essential.

If you already have your hosting set up it can really speed things up in the registration process for a domain name if you can enter you name servers in at the time of purchase. This gets the propagation process moving along and means you can have you site up and running sooner. Just get your name server info from your host and input them in the form at Go Daddy before you finalize the purchase.

Once you have your domain bought and registered it is time to set up your site. It can take a day or so to have your domain name propagate across the net so be patient. That is why the prior step helps out. It can cut down that time till you can see your domain on your browser.

Start getting those pages built and loaded to your site. Now the fun begins as you create content, build links and drive traffic to your website. Big piece of advice here, don’t delay in getting content built and loaded up. Even if it is a rough draft. It is better to get the pages up and start the indexing process than to sit back and fuss over the copy till the cows come home. Trust me this is important! Put up each page as soon as you have roughed them out. Then go back and tweak them after you have got 5-10 pages of content created for your site. If you have a mini site then create the entire mini site before you polish the pages to perfection.

The Basics of Domain Name Registration

If you want to have your own web site, you need to learn the basics of domain name registration. A domain name is also known as a web address or host name. Every web site needs its own domain name so that users can find it on the web. Domain name registration is important to make sure that two web sites aren’t using the same domain name.

Because so many domain names are in use and in demand, there are certain organizations that have made a business out of domain name registration. Known as domain name registrars, these organizations act as a middleman between the registry that handles domain names and the public, buying and selling names at whim. Although there are too many of these organizations to name here, examples of registrars are GoDaddy.com and DomainDirect.com.

Domain Name Registration for Beginners

If you are interested in registering a name, you are in luck because domain name registration is a relatively simple process. All you need to do is find a registrar and search for the name you are interested in using to see if it available.

With the rapid expansion of the Internet, many of the most popular domain names have already been taken. Many webmasters are forced to get creative and add hyphens or numbers to their name. If you cannot find the name you want during the beginning of the domain name registration process, you may want to consider using one of these creative techniques.

During domain name registration, you must also decide what you want your top level domain to be. The most common choices are .com or .net, but you can also investigate options like .biz, .org, or .info.

Once you have picked your domain name, you need to decide how long you want to hold that name. Most registrars offer contracts that range anywhere from one year to ten years, and most offer you the opportunity to renew once the contract expires.

The cost of this will vary depending on the service you use and the length of your contract. To make sure you are getting the best deal possible, it is a good idea to shop around or get domain name registration referrals before you buy.

Choosing the Best Domain Name

The hardest part of domain name registration is choosing the best domain name. It is recommended that you choose a name that is both memorable and has something to do with your business or business name. And, it wouldn’t hurt if the name is a good searchable term.

In addition to using good sense when choosing a domain name, you must also abide by the basic rules of domain name registration. For example, you shouldn’t choose a name that is a copyrighted word or term. This could lead to legal problems down the road. You will also want to make sure that you keep the domain name under 67 characters, as that is the maximum length for web addresses.

Internet Marketing - It is Important to Have Your Own Web Site

If you are going to get involved in internet marketing it would behoove you to have a web site. Not too long ago it was a major undertaking to have a web site, unless you didn’t care about cost or were knowledgeable about html. Today it is much easier.

The reason you need a web site is because every phase of your internet business is launched from your web pages. If you start with affiliate marketing, you will need a web page to promote these affiliates.

If you write articles, you will want to link them to a web site landing page for your readers to visit. You will need a site for other tools you use to make your business successful. This can include auto responders, pay per click advertising, forums, etc.

Something you might want to think about, is start by getting a free website. There are lots of them out there. If you’re wondering why they’re free it’s because you’re required to promote their advertising . If you are using this as a beginning web site to learn your way around, than pushing their adverts is no big deal. It becomes a quid pro quo.

Once you feel comfortable, you might want to upgrade to a point and click web site host that charges for their services. No need to get upset about price. You can join a hosting site for as little as $5.95 a month, that generally includes a free domain name. Usually you have to sign up for a certain period of time to get that price. You will find these pay for websites a little more sophisticated, but like the free ones it won’t take you long to figure it out.

It is not necessary to know html with the newer versions of point and click web sites. They all have what they call a site builder or some similar name. This generally has all the tools you need to build your site.

Domain Names

A good rule to follow is to choose a domain name the same as your website name. The reason for this is that when others think of your website address, they will think of it by the actual name of your website. If your domain name is the same as your website name it will be easier for people to type in the right URL to your website.

The name of your website should obviously be something that reflects what you are promoting on that website. People don’t like to have to remember a web address and a separate website name. Make it simple and easy for people to find you on the web, choose a domain name that is the same as your website name. Choose a website name that describes or is somehow related to what you are promoting on that website.

Now…what if you can’t get the same domain name as your website name, try adding a number behind the domain name. For example: If your website name is “Pampered Poochy Clothes,” and the domain name of pamperedpoochyclothes is not available, try this instead, pamperedpoochyclothes1. You still have the name you want and only one extra item tagged on for people to have to remember. The point is, however, your domain name will be at least very similar to your website name, which does make it easier for people to find you over and over again. You still might lose customers with this strategy, however, if people forget to put the number after the name and land on the other person’s website.

If at all possible, try for a unique domain name all your own, something that describes your website and the same as your website name.

Another choice would be to check with “whois” to see if you can buy the domain name you choose, but now can’t use, because it is taken by someone else. You might be able to purchase that domain name from the owner. You can simply contact the person listed as owner and ask if they are willing to sell it.

A cheaper alternative to the above would be to obtain your domain name first and then name your website the same as the domain name. This is especially true if you are just starting out building a website and do not already have the business established off the internet.

A brand name domain is probably better than a generic name. For example, if your website is only about strawberries, don’t name it “fruit.” Go with strawberries.

Most experienced website owners agree the shorter domain names are better than longer ones. It is easier for people to remember a shorter name and easier for all purposes when entering your domain name into forms and such on the internet. Domain names in general can be up to 67 characters.

Long domain names that have your site’s keywords in them have an advantage during search engine crawls and indexing.

Another common problem is whether to choose com, org, net, etc. Often people can’t get the “com” domain of their choice, but can get the “net,” or the “org” or other country-specific top level domain available such as “de,” “nu,” or “sg.” The question is should a person choose one of these others if they can get the domain name of their choice.

If your website or business promotes to the local community, such as a pizza delivery business, then it would make sense to get a country-specific top level domain such as (de, nu, sg, etc). You would benefit from having a local domain because the customers in your country know that they are dealing with a local business, which might be all they are looking for anyway. Having a “.com” at the end would suggest a US or an International site. Your site would probably fair much better with one of country-specific top level domains like (de, nu, sg, and etc).

If your site can benefit from an international audience, it is probably going to fair just as well with “.net”, or “.org” or another country specific extension if you can get the name of your choice with the extension. The other side to this is if you settle for a country specific domain extension just to get the name you want, others might think that your website only promotes to that particular country.

Many people find that “.net” and “.org” extensions are acceptable domain names. For some people, the “.org” extension describes the non-profit nature of their website or organization.

I am one that usually settles for nothing less than a “.com” extension. I do feel like overall the “.com” extension fairs better in search engines. This is just a “gut” feeling, however, for information sites like the one I am promoting in this article, I use the “.info” extension when the “.com” extension is not available.

There are some good arguments for accepting other extensions, however, if you absolutely have to go with a certain name for your website, and cannot get the “.com” extension.

After all is said and done about getting domain names, it is probably the wisest choice to get the domain name before you start your site or business.

The Kid Goes International

Comrade Kid!
This is a little bizarre to me but it is fun. This is a true story. I know I am not really going “International”, but it does prove certain points, about how the world has changed, about how the Internet is changing it, and the irony is amazing!

I have 4 . mobi’s my personal favorite is coldwarkid. I mentioned that in an earlier article, the same one that caused me to write this one.

While I was searching for my mobi coldwarkid, I thought I would check my dot com by that name, so I googled it. What I found was very interesting. There were a couple of my quotations, from ezine articles, a blurb from one of my websites, and a paragraph from one of my pieces- in Russian! This is how the first part of it reads in the English translation from the Russian translation of my original English version: (you may want to skip through some of this, but it is worth a look. How strange it is to see your article in Cyrillic script.
You can find the original of this article at “ezine articles.”

“I domain www.coldwarkid.com I also have several options for the same things. Информации.Information. Нетто, так далее.Net,I did not do anything with them while they are parked in ads for the time being.I did not even know that gangs of children Cold War, a very popular band, did not exist, while I parked one of the pages with a company brokers ads related to my domain name and a preview on the 2nd in ‘cold war-affected children. www.milgun.info,dissposesed. I got the domain name, because I wanted to sort of a common domain name, which I could use a few goals, such as promoting and expanding my pages of military rifles at www.milgun.info site with rifles at the first and second world wars and the cold war, ‘or, s kind of low memory technology several pages on the creation of simple websites for the Internet dispossessed Well my generation.I liked the name so much that I even bought Gasimov domain!

I also would like to see a more volatile Therefore, it seems to define the lostness, and the social unrest of my generation. We have come together in the second half of the century that saw the Great Depression, is situated between two world wars that have helped define the generation before us as a ‘Great Generation’, and that they truly are.We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the previous generation for bringing us the fruits of their “blood, sweat, work and tears. My generation, however, it is equally definition, but now that definition in the history of time. We Vietnam, of the civil rights movement, the space program and many other social issues, however. Who would have thought that the first generation of a significant world, such as he would have been so volatile? unruliness,Perhaps this unruliness is essential to our democracy, adjustment to keep us in balance.Only time will really tell.Ultimately, it means what it means.”

Well, that was strange. It was also kind of fun. It is also a little ironic. The order has definitely changed in the world. It wasn’t to long ago that there was no free press in the now, former, Soviet Union, and now, even with the nickname Cold War Kid, I am being reprinted, on the Internet, in Russian.

Why Are The Domain Rates So Different? What Should I Look Out For?

If you have ever registered a domain and done some research before doing so, you would have wondered as to why domain name registration rates differ so widely across the internet.

Actually, Domain names are registered by companies called Registrars. These are literally like the Registrars we are aware of in real life and maintain a list of domain names as well as register new ones. These Registrars operate through their resellers, who in turn have web sites where you can register your domains. These resellers pay a fixed flat fee per domain name to their registrar, but they have the liberty of charging their clients any rate they wish to.

However, each reseller and each registrar have their understanding, as to what rate the reseller pays the registrar for each domain. An important factor is how many domains the reseller sells, this determines his wholesale price. Thus, virtually every site on the internet has a different rate of registering and transferring domain names.

However, some are worth the extra mullah. Besides registering the domain they provide you with features like domain forwarding, temporary “site under construction” page hosting, control panels, domain-lock facility etc.

Today the cost of domains has fallen drastically. Certain tld (Top level Domains) such as .info sell for as low as a $1! But, whatever may be the price, make sure that the website or company you purchase from is ICANN certified and offers you the following:

1) Control Panel: This is absolutely essential for it allows you to change and control various aspects of your domain such as nameservers, contact details etc.

2) Domain Lock: This facility allows you to a lock your domain to the registrar so nobody can hijack your domain.

3) Managed DNS: This is an advanced but highly useful utility that allows you to modify your MX (mail exchange), A, CNAME and SOA entries. This is useful when you want to have different mail servers than your website or if you want to setup sub-domains etc.

You can get all the above facilities at the Sigel WebSolutions WebStore.

Domain Suffixes Explained (Domain Names Simplified Series)

Domain names (or DNS addresses for the geeks) are a system by which people like you and me can reach the computer we want and get the information without the hassle of remembering a sequence of seemingly unrelated numbers ( called IP addresses )

Domain names are further suffixed to provide the user with some means of identification of the nature of the website and a means of classification for the web sites themselves. These suffixes are referred to as top – level domains.

The common examples of these are .com, .org, .net, the newer .biz, .name, .info etc.

These suffixes help to provide further information about where the computer is located and what is it prime reason for existence i.e. for commercial purposes, non-profit organization, networking purposes or purely as a B-2-B site (business to business site).

On the basis of their primary motive, domain names are registered. Hence, since most businesses exist for commerce, the most common suffix is … yes you guessed it right! .COM!!

So common is this particular top level domain that it is mostly implied when we visit a website. Hence, for more purposes than purely commercial is this suffix used.

A brief overview of the common suffixes is outlined below

SUFFIX Meaning

.com Commercial Site
.org Non-profit organization site
.net Site within a larger network.
.biz Purely for Business-to-Business sites
.name For identity purposes of an individual or organization
.info Informational sites providing no e-commerce
.co.uk Site based in the United Kingdom
.co.in Site based in India

Note: The last to suffixes can be replaced by most other country’s two letter abbreviation. Eg. For a Japanese site .co.jp would be the suffix.

Check whether your domain name is available here.

Sell Domain Name for Fortune - 3 Proven Factors

For one to sell domain name with profit in mind, they must learn what adds the most value to their property. One must also view their domain name as a piece of virtual real estate. The value will depend on the popularity of the name, the extension of the name, and the length of the name. You’ll be able to obtain success in the sell domain name game if at least two of these three aspects are met.

1. The popularity. If you want to sell domain name for profit you should find a name that has a certain amount of popularity attached with it. Be it a trend, a technology, something or someone famous, or a popular catch-phrase. Many believe all the good domain name are unavailable. But this is where the sell domain name popularity factor comes into play. There are always new trends emerging, new people becoming famous, and new phrases being coined. Having a young relative around the age of 13-17 would be a great way to research up and coming trends or phrases being used which you can then turn around and obtain, then sell domain name once the trend becomes more mainstream.

2. The extension of the name. When one wants to sell domain name for profit, the first thing they should look for is the extension. That is .com, .net, .org, and so forth. The most popular and profitable is .com. Both .net and .org are arguably equal, though some feel .net to be the second most profitable to sell domain name. Other extensions include .info, .biz, .us, and newer one’s seem to be emerging as well. The bottom line seems to be that many of these are “unproven” to be profitable to sell domain with. While it’s important to keep an eye on promising profitable extensions, for now the extension of .com is still the king, with the fallbacks of .net and .org. next in line.

3. The length of the domain name is important as well. In real estate, usually the larger the property, the more valuable. In virtual real estate, the shorter the name is the more profitable avenue to pursue in the sell domain name game. Think of yourself in crowded Manhattan. With all those small properties selling for a fortune, the virtual world is like a crowded Manhattan. Shoot for short terms, try to avoid long phrases and try not utilizing dashes in your sell domain name venture.

The sell domain name game can be an incredibly profitable business to get into it. Especially if your keen on coming trends and technologies, as well as all things famous.

Simple Step For Choosing Great Web Host

There are thousands of web hosts around today with thousands of plans to choose from making what was once a simple procedure seems like a daunting task for both newbie and pro alike. Whether you’re looking for your first host or looking to move on to a better one there are certain simple steps you must follow to succeed in choosing a great host. These simple steps include:

Right Platform

The first and most foremost step in choosing a web host is determining the platform the web server should run, usually a choice between Unix/Linux and Windows. Your choice is largely determined by your website and the technologies used to create it, generally a website created with Microsoft technologies (ASP, VB) will run on Windows servers while most other sites using open source technologies (PHP, Perl, Python etc) will run on Linux based systems.

Right Features

Once you’ve chosen your platform the next step is determining the features you’ll need from your web host. Take your time with this step as the feature lists of web hosts are getting longer and longer every day and while some plans may look similar on the surface, a good look at the feature lists may tell another story. Only you can determine the specific features you’ll need, but some key things to keep an eye on are:

Disk Space
Bandwidth
Backups
Uptime
Money Back Guarantee
Domains Allowed
Databases (Number & type)
CGI, PHP, Perl, Python, SSI
Cron
Email accounts

The list goes on and on, just remembers to take your time and make sure your new web host is going to provide you with everything you need.

Budget

Often budget is the only thing people consider when choosing their first web host, funds are usually tight and on the surface most hosts look very similar. Sometimes you get lucky and choose a good host, but more often than not it turns out to be a horror story.

Remember that the cost of your web hosting is more than just the monthly fee, think about the total cost of ownership. TCO includes lost sales due to downtime & slow speeds, downtime rebates, extra bandwidth charges, setup costs, extra feature costs, and your monthly fee.
Many hosts will require you to pay yearly to get the best price available though there are some that allow you to pay by the month and still get the best price, it’s really a matter of personal choice as to what payment method works best for you.

Customer Service

Customer service is another aspect that is often not forgettable while choosing a great web host. You shouldn’t settle for anything less than 24/7/365 service, your website needs to be running all the time so it’s no good if your hosting company doesn’t work during the holidays. Don’t take the web hosting companies word for it, they all claim 24/7 support but few back it up with consistent performance. Be sure to test them out at various times of the day and night via phone, email and live chat if they offer it.

Support

An extensive knowledge base can be a real time saver as well as being an indication of the level of customer service supports and expertise you can expect to receive. Spend some time browsing the support sections of the website and see for yourself the level of support provided.

Longevity

Do a whois on the web host’s domain name and find out the creation date, anything less than a year ago and the risk that they won’t be around next year increases. They could be a great host, but considering more then 95% of new hosts go out of business within a year that really isn’t something you should be taking a chance on.

Uptime

It’s a fact of life that a web host cannot be online 100% of the time, servers need to be rebooted for security and software updates and any web host that doesn’t get updated faces the increased risk of being successfully hacked.

99.9% uptime guarantees are pretty standard in the industry however a guarantee is only as good as how it is defined and the company behind it. Look for no less than a full months free hosting should they not meet their guarantee, a prorated refund based on the amount of downtime is virtually worthless. Say you pay $10 for a month of hosting and your site is down for 24 hours. They will refund you for one day of downtime, which ends up being about 33 cents.

Hence, it’s not a rocket science; just a little research and investigating that can save a lot of heartache in the future and can offer you a great web host.
