In order to optimize your search engine ranking you have to understand the basis of “link popularity” – that is, how search engines rank sites. Certainly, search engines use on-page criteria for part of the ranking. This means that your keywords, content and meta tags need to be optimized. But you can only go so far with that. If you have those things perfect, it only represents an “unfair competitive advantage” as long as your competitors don’t have theirs perfect.

Search engines are look at off-page criteria for their rankings. Generally, they assess the “quality” of a site’s content based on the number of impartial links that go to it. For optimization purposes use something more descriptive and relevant to your overall site.

Your goal should be to have as many sites linking to you as possible that are of good quality. So don’t slack on this part and make sure you do good in this area because it’s the most important ranking factor for your site. After that, you’ll probably need to have a good linking scheme within your own site where everything is going smoothly.

Are All Links for Search Engine Optimization Created Equal?

Relevancy. The one thing that makes all the difference with search engine optimization is one hundred percent relevancy. How do you describe relevancy without using the term “relevant”?

With search engine optimization, relevancy is simply that your site reflects content which is similar to what a user is searching for. Your site is ranking based on that beautiful nine letter word, relevancy. Relevancy is determined by the content on your site and how many links link to your web site.

If you read a previous article put out by this search engine optimization company, you may recall a reference to ten pounds of gold verses ten pounds of cotton. I’ll use it again when talking about links.

It’s true, ten pounds of cotton is in fact the exact same weight as ten pounds of gold. Certainly most average third graders can confirm that science. However, the gold (though the same weight) is worth far, far, far more than the cotton. The same applies with links.

By now you should have realized that all links are certainly not created equal. Links are not just about quantity but also quality. For the sake of giving an example, you have an online shoe store. Your shoe store web site has one hundred links to it. Links from directories, indiscriminate link exchanges, links from your chamber of commerce, and a colorful variety of web sites. Unfortunately, not all of these links are working in your favor.

Relevancy. The links to your web site need to be from relevant web site. The shoe store could link to a variety of “shoe related” web sites. For example, sport web sites always talk about footwear. Do link exchanges with those. Articles and press releases are syndicated based on relevancy, write a handful of those. Let relevancy be your guide.

If you are working with a search engine optimization company, make sure they are connecting your site with relevant web sites. Check your link exchange partner page and see who you are linking to. Relevancy is what makes the difference between cotton and gold.

Search Engine Optimization Content Vs. Links

Search engine optimization is made up of relevant content, fresh content, and link population. I say this many times every day. However, an argument still exist out in the Internet Nation of whether you should spend more time on your content and on getting links to your web site.

“Content is King” saith the link opposition. It is true…content is important. If you are not providing new content to the internet that is useful, enlightening, and down right interesting, you have a problem. Search engines download your entire web site (textually speaking) to determine what your web site is relevant to. The process is far more complicated but you get the general idea.

If a web site pertaining to cars has an encyclopedia of one million pages of car repair, car classifieds, car information, car related products, and car articles, it is very easy to see that this site is highly relevant to the term “cars”.

But what if our million page mammoth doesn’t have any web sites linking to it? Realistically, that is not going to happen…but lets pretend.

Links to a web site are a symbol of good quality. After all, would a thousand people relate their web site to a web site that was not relevant nor useful? No usually. This is why Google particularly puts so much emphasis on link population. Your local car shop may have five hundred relevant links to it and only ten pages within the web site.

However, it is likely that your local car shop will rank higher than the car web site with over one million pages of content. Why? Because content is like weight. Ten pounds of gold may weigh the same as ten pounds of cotton but the value is still greater.

So one million pages of relevant useless content can be lost in the search engines because nobody is linking to it. Of course, with that much content, someone in a blog, web site, or forum is bound to make reference and link to the site…but not if the content is useless.

What to do. Content comes first. Create a lot of good content. You are in business because you have something that others don’t. Be it a product, ability to make a product, ability to perform a service, or a license to do a service, you have something that others do not. With that, you naturally have knowledge that others do not. Share that knowledge. Knowledge is equal to the aforementioned ten pounds of gold.

Once you have your knowledge on your web site, you can begin doing link exchanges and also receiving unrequested links to your web site…all because you now have useful, relevant, and interesting content.
In the case of Content vs. Links, the verdict is simple. Both are important but content needs to come first and be useful. Links come after useful content and they need to be from relevant web sites.

Maximizing Inbound Links Using RSS and Atom Feeds

Publishing an RSS or Atom feed for your blog or other website and allowing others to syndicate it (ie. post its content on their websites in HTML format) can boost your search engine position by getting inbound links from related websites.

If you’ve studied search engine optimization, you know that there’s only so much you can accomplish by optimizing the content of your webpages. That’s because, while on-page optimization can tell the search engines what your site is about, only inbound links tell them how important your site is. Unless you have the only site in the world covering your particular topic, it needs to be both relevant to the topic and important (as evidenced by many inbound links) to rank high in search results.

Inbound links are SEO silver, and inbound links from related sites are pure SEO gold.

How do you maximize the number and value of inbound links generated by your feeds? Here are nine key tips:

Tip #1: Keep your feed focused on one topic.

If someone is looking for a feed use to add content to their site and your feed covers exactly the topic they’re interested in, you’ll have a better chance of getting syndicated than if your feed contains information irrelevant to their site. If you publish information on a variety of topics, publish multiple feeds, each covering one topic area, either instead of or in addition to a monolithic feed containing everything.

Tip #2: Publish only interesting information.

You might think that goes without saying, but the temptation may arise to go for volume over quality. If someone syndicating your feed decides that the signal to noise ratio is too high, they may go looking for a better source.

Tip #3: Publish often.

You’ll have to figure out for yourself the optimal balance between this and the previous tip. But keep in mind that if someone is syndicating your feed in order to get regularly updated content, they’ll be less likely to look for a different feed if you provide new content regularly. If you can’t always publish regularly, publish anyway, but if you can publish regularly, by all means, do.

Tip #4: Write well.

“Well” is, of course, defined in relation to your subject matter and target audience. If your target audience uses lots of slang, write with lots of slang. Just don’t let your writing style stand between you and your target audience. Webmasters want content that speaks to their target audience.

Tip #5: Publish summary feeds instead of full content feeds.

There are two reasons for doing this. First, most people who syndicate only want to display a summary of each item, and some webmasters won’t know how to make their RSS to HTML converter truncate the content. Second, there are those who want to rip off the full content of your site and use it as the sole content of their site. A summary-only feed won’t help them do that.

Tip #6: Tell people how to syndicate your feed.

Provide a link from your website or feed to an RSS to HTML converter like CaRP with a brief note about what it’s for.

Tip #7: Give explicit permission to syndicate your feed.

Even among those who know that it can be done, not everyone will be comfortable syndicating feeds without the express permission of the publisher. Don’t wait for them to ask — post a note in the feed or on your website giving permission to syndicate your feed. You may wish to include a condition requiring that they preserve links back to your site in a search-engine-visible fashion (eg. no use of JavaScript links or ‘rel=”nofollow”‘).

Tip #8: Don’t put ads in your feed.

Advertisements, especially banners, are likely to mess up the formatting of sites on which they’re syndicated. And obviously, other webmasters don’t want to display advertisements on their site if you’re going to be the one making money from them. Most webmasters won’t know how to filter the ads out of your feed when syndicating it, so if you include ads, they’ll probably look for another feed instead.

Tip #9: Consider not offering a JavaScript version of your feed.

A JavaScript feed has no SEO value, because it’s not visible to search engines. The tradeoff is that JavaScript feeds are easier for many webmasters to use, so by not offering a JavaScript feed, your feed might get syndicated on less sites, and thus bring in direct traffic from less sites. You’ll need to decide which is more important to you: the SEO value of being syndicated, or the clicks from sites that syndicate you.

If you’ll follow these 9 tips, you’ll increase the number of people who syndicate your feed on their sites, increasing the number of inbound links you receive from sites related to yours. This will boost your search engine position and bring you more traffic, both from the search engines and from the sites that syndicate your content.

Competition For Links Is Not Your Problem

One of our pet peeves is the fact that everybody is so worried about competition! It just drives us crazy! Never worry about competition! We’ve heard it so many times from so many customers and we try so hard to change people’s attitudes. What do you say to the person who’s reading this thinking, “I’m not going to put anybody’s link on my Website - that’s going to drive business to them instead of me!”

The Web is totally different - it’s a completely different world than inserting a flier for someone selling a competing product with you in your own product. You’re providing a resource that people will bookmark and come back to your Website to find links to other Websites. It’s a whole different ballgame here! You’re actually providing a resource! One of the things that people on the Web are constantly looking for is a good place to go to other places on the Web.

Everybody’s heard of Yahoo. It’s a multi-billion dollar business in just a few short years. Guess what their whole business started out doing? It was nothing but a place to go to other Websites from. On top of that, every link you add you makes sure you’ve got a link on their Site bringing people to you from their customers. Anybody who clicks on a link and goes to another Website just has to go up to that little button that says “back” on their browser, hit back, and pow! - they’re right back to your Website!

They can go over these links and use them to go check out other stuff. And so what?!? There’s so many billions of users on the Internet, all you want to do is get enough traffic coming through consistently to make the sales from those customers who chose to buy from you.

We have a friend involved in credit card processing and he’s got hundreds of people, maybe more, that have entered our Site to say, “Hey, can I put an advertisement for your Site on my Site?” and he’d pay them if any business comes through. Sometimes somebody clicks on that banner which goes to another Site, which goes to another Site, which goes to another Site and eventually they end up on yours and they buy your product.

He talked to some of his customers and ask, “How did you find us?” And they say, “Well, I went to buy a CD-ROM but I clicked over to another Site that had printing because I needed to get printing, then I clicked to another Site that had a mail room and I clicked to another Site that did packaging, then I clicked over, clicked over, and eventually clicked over to a Site that said ‘Hey, need to accept credit cards for your sales? Click Here!’”

They just kept bouncing around til they found them. And it’s beautiful because they get business they wouldn’t have had. The people who actually sent the customer to them gets paid a nice fee, and everybody is happy and the customer’s satisfied because with just clicking his mouse he’s been able to get everything he needs for his new venture. It’s wonderful!

It’s so ridiculous that people worry so much about competition. Because it’s silly!! By joint venturing with these other Sites you just get your message across to so many more people. It reminds us in Mail Order of a mailing list. Over the years, we have made hundreds of thousands of dollars by renting out our names to mailing list brokers and to companies who used our buyers’ names.

There are some companies (we still run into them) that say, “These are my customers and no one else shall ever have them!” They won’t take this money! These thousands and thousands of dollars they could make every year, tens of thousands, because they have this crazy idea that they’re not going to share with anyone else. It’s really ridiculous!

Anytime you drive past a McDonald’s, Burger King, or a Wendy’s, look around and within a block or usually across the street you’ll find the competition. And they both make more money because they’re both there. People know food and they move to that area. Next time you go in front of a fast food place, look around and you’ll see a competitor.

One of the most popular shopping centers in San Diego, actually in San Marcos now, is a real innovative shopping center . . .

The whole shopping center is restaurants! There’s an Italian restaurant, there’s a Chinese restaurant, there’s a steak house, there’s a Japanese place, there’s any kind of restaurant. There’s a Thai restaurant, there are about 12 or 15 restaurants all in the same strip mall and they all are doing more business than they can handle!

The shopping center is ONLY for restaurants. There’s no bookstore, there’s no electronic store, there’s no clothing store. Every place in there - and we think there are about 15 now - is a restaurant! That would be the place we’d want our restaurant!

Have you noticed how every bookstore has a coffee shop in it now? If they were real scared they could say, “Every dollar spent on coffee is one dollar less that’s spent on books or visa-versa!” Instead what they do is say, “Hey, sit down and read a book! Have a cup of Java. Take your time.” They both make more money!

The other thing to keep in mind is they call it the World Wide WEB because it’s thousands of decided they wanted a little tiny web of their own, so there’s 25 million different little webs. But how effective would that be compared to this gigantic WEB that covers the entire world?
