The word feeding should appear in the life stage claim. This assures that the food was proven to be nutritionally adequate when fed to animals in controlled tests.

Probably the most important part of the label is the ingredient section. This part should be scrutinized carefully. There is a big difference between whole chicken or beef and chicken or beef byproducts. Choice cuts could mean chicken heads, feet, and intestines. Choice cuts of beef could mean cow brains, tongue, and fetal tissue, which is dangerously high in hormones, it could even mean diseased or cancerous meat. If you see the word animal byproducts on the label you could be buying any of these organs and body parts. Any pet food with soybean on the label is not a good sign. Dogs lack the enzymes in the gut to digest vegetable matter of this sort and it can be a source of gas and parasites which thrive in the putrid mass that lays as undigested sludge in a dog\’s intestines.

Another good thing to check is the contact information. Although the only contact information required is the name and address of the manufacturer, it\’s a good idea if they list their phone number as well. Should your dog become sick or if you have any questions about the food its good to know that you can call the manufacturer to ask questions about their product. If there is no real contact information on the label it may be by design and if you have no way to check the authenticity or where the food originated you really can\’t be sure what you\’re buying.

Untie the bag and use a net to transfer the fish into the glass aquarium
Never add the water from the bag to the tank as this may contain toxins
Allow the fish to adjust for a few hours before turning the light of the aquarium back on

Starting a Saltwater Aquarium

Before starting a saltwater aquarium it would be a good idea if you researched the ecosystem of saltwater fishes, their habitat, food, water temperature etc. A saltwater aquarium can be highly gratifying and the extra time used to research the exact requirements for a saltwater tank is worth its weight in gold.

To start a saltwater aquarium you will require a Fish tank, Filtration System, Substrates, Heater or Thermometer, power head, protein skimmer, water pump, and air pump.

The Basic Types

There are three basic forms of saltwater aquariums: Fish Only, Fish with Live Rock and Reef System.

Fish only – This is a good choice for beginners. This type of tank is for keeping fish only as the name suggests and is the least expensive type.

Fish with Live Rock- This is basically the same as fish only, but has live rocks. It is called “live rock” because of the creatures and organisms living on the inside and on the surface of the rock. Buying good rock, can be expensive though.

Reef System- Reef tanks are usually set up by very experienced hobbyists because these tanks require excellent water conditions, extremely high lighting levels, water supplements, reverse osmosis and deionized water, and excellent filtration. In short it costs the earth and then some.

Saltwater Aquarium Do’s & Don’t’s

You should ideally choose an aquarium that is 55 gallons (200 liters) or larger. It will be harder to maintain suitable water quality and balance in a smaller tank.

After deciding on size you must decide on the material of the aquarium. There are 2 choices glass and acrylic. Both these materials are commonly used for saltwater aquariums and have their pros and cons.

Location is a very important aspect of saltwater aquariums. Too much sunlight causes algae problems and too little is equally harmful. The temperature should be as constant as possible.

Never place anything in the aquarium that is not saltwater proof. Make sure that decorations are saltwater proof or they may poison your aquarium.

Filtration is an important part of any aquarium, salt or otherwise. There are three basic types of filterations- mechanical filtration, chemical filtration and biological filtration.

Cleaning your aquarium with detergent or soap will pollute the water and destroy the fragile ecosystem of your saltwater aquarium. It’s best if you use bleach instead. Add one capful of pure bleach to 10 gallons of water and wipe the aquarium with, clean carefully with fresh water afterwards.

You should never use ordinary salt in your aquarium. Its best to buy aquarium salt from a fish store and mix it with water according to instruction.

A hydrometer is very crucial for the saltwater aquarium. It is of utmost importance for you to maintain a balance between the salt and water levels. Water keeps evaporating, whereas the salt level remains the same. Evaporated water should never be replaced by salt water. A hydrometer will make it possible for you to check the exact salinity of the water.

Once I had a dog named Laika. She was very skinny when I got her. But I was able to take good care of her and she became a pretty and healthy dog. She became pregnant a few months after I got her. But there was a problem on the delivery after her first baby so I had to bring her to the veterinary hospital to have her on a CS operation. That was approximately 16 hours after she delivered the first pup. The doctor asked me to leave her there and wait for his call. He gave me one pack of liquid milk and asked to bring home the puppy with me. It was a Sunday morning at about 10am. A few minutes had passed and I started to become worried. I tried calling the vet to check her condition but there was no answer. I started to cry while looking at the little puppy on my lap. I felt so helpless not knowing what was happening to my girl. But then because of a few sleepless nights on watching Laika at her almost-delivering-moments of her life, I fell sleep and was waken up only because of a shocking news. My brother-in-law told me that Laika is dead. I felt the world over me. I didn’t know what to ask. I couldn’t even cry out loud. I didn’t know what to think of and what to do. How could that happen? Why? What did the vet do? Why he didn’t even call me? How about this puppy? How was I gonna make her survive? All these questions I’ve asked and pain that I’ve felt weren’t enough for me to just stop moving on, I had this little creature to take care of. I know I had to be strong and keep moving on so I could fight for the life of this little angel named Bicka.

Bicka is a very beautiful female dog. She will turn 3 this coming September. Every year we celebrate her birthday like we do with the kids, my niece and my nephew, with cake, ice cream, salad and pasta on the table. I always buy a special gift for her every year. She’s like a child to me, my baby, my love, my princess.

But before she had her first birthday, or even when she was a few days old, her life was at risk. Not having her mom with her to take care and to feed her made it so very hard. But then I did my best and I have loved her so much that there were times that I forgot to take care of myself. During the first few days, I would always skip meals just to have time to feed her at my lunchbreak. I became so thin because of having only 2-3 hours of sleep every night. I am her mom now! I fought for her life with all the best that I could give and now, looking at her, how she grew so pretty, a young princess of mine, makes me feel so happy and proud of myself. Our household consists of two sons with furry coats and four legs each. Is this unusual? Not in a majority of homes that have pets. Pets are considered family members and are treated as such. Not only do we provide the basic necessities for our beloved dogs, we also lavish love, attention and gifts upon our furry family members.

Dogs have always been an integral part of a child’s life. Growing up in the 1950’s and 1960’s, every home seemed to have a dog included in the family structure at one time or another. Our loving companions are now fitted with a microchip so we may locate them if they become lost. If our dogs are unruly or not behaving as we think they should, there are dog trainers that come to your home or we may send our furry friends to a boarding facility to be retrained. There are even doggie boot camps for the really stubborn dogs. Our dogs visit vets for their yearly check up and get their teeth cleaned. If your dog needs an x-ray, MRI, EKG or a cardiac pacemaker implanted, it can be done. Our dogs are part of our lives and families and we treat our pets as we would our children. Yes, I do buy presents for my dogs for Christmas and birthdays. I am also guilty of sending cards to people from my dog.

Having a pet and making him a family member is a growing transition. Just look at all the websites focusing on canines and pet stores that cater to our canine companions. In homes where the kids have grown up and left or where single or elderly people live alone, dogs make good companions and keep people from becoming lonely. Having a dog to talk to or keep you company is good for your physical and mental health. People who love animals are generally more pleasant to be around and not as self centered.

Children who are raised in a home where there are pets (dogs, cats, birds, fish etc) are more likely to allow their children to have pets when they start their own families. If these young people were taught the responsibilities of taking care of an animal they know the hard work and also the rewards of raising a dog or other such pet. Being kind, loving and taking care of another life is the greatest lesson we can teach our children. Providing for our pet’s care after our death is important. If you have a loving, dependable friend or family member to take the dog into their home would be a blessing. The dog will be saddened by his owner’s death and will mourn his loss. If the dog will be given a home by someone he knows this will help the dog overcome his grief much faster and provide some stability in his life. Humans who considered pets as family members used to be looked upon as eccentric as having more money than sense. That is not the case any longer. Unfortunately, first impressions of the bull dog terrier may not be favorable. Well, if you can get past the looks, you’ll find a very lovable, docile creature to escort you through your days.

Years ago in Great Britain and later, America, gamblers were obsessed with bloody fights between bulls and dogs. The main function of the canine was to hang on to the bull’s neck and worry the poor animal until it dies. In order to that bloody deed, strong jaws were necessary. And the popular choice of the time were the pit bulls.

At that time, pit bulls displayed a variety of characteristics and made the “sport” interesting. But after a while, the focus switched towards the fight between pit bulls and not against the bulls themselves.

From these canines rooted most of the bull dog terriers that we know of today.

One of the popular bull dog terriers we have is the American Staffordshire Terrier that project strength and physical power but are in actuality not vicious at all. In fact, this dog is very much associated with its relationship to its family, especially among children.

Sometimes this breed will show aggressiveness which may somehow work against them. Nevertheless, this can be offset by their loving nature and devotion to their human family owners. Thus, it has a stable temperament which make them good pets and excellent watchdogs.

AmStaff terrier, as it is called by its shorter name, suffers in reputation though since it is commonly associated with pit bulls. These dogs are likely to back down from a fight or a challenge and therefore are used often in illegal dog fighting.

Responsible training could alleviate at least part of that situation. Sadly, there are too few AmStaff that are properly trained. And what’s even disturbing is that there are innumerable pit bulls that are continually ill-treated by bloodthirsty owners.

We are often confused of what true pit bulls are. In fact, many lovers of this breed are put off by their name as it elicits unwanted images of gory dog fights. While this breed is not yet officially recognized by the American Dog Breeders Association or the United Kennel Club, the legitimate name remains to be American Pit Bull Terrier.

Please judge these dogs as victims of maltreatment and exploitive training (and inhumane) for self-serving purposes. Otherwise, American Pit Bull Terriers can be very people loving - hardworking too.

So hardworking in fact, that they’ll play till their power reserves are exhausted. That’s why they make great companions while you’re getting in shape or need companyduring athletic training. If, however, you choose a sedentary lifestyle, please find another breed as your companion.

Unfortunately the American Pit Bull Terrier is not officially recognized by the AKC because it is not considered a purebred. Oh well, we still find them irresistible.

Coprophagia is the consumption of feces by your dog. It may be due to medical or behavioral problems.

Merck’s Veterinary Manual says that is initially seen in puppies four to nine months old. Coprophagia lessens with many dogs after the age of one year.

Primary among them are pancreatic problems, gastro-intestinal problems, and over-feeding.
