2. Sachin Tendulkar hits back emotionally mentioning that he’s distressed at the remarks. And has reiterated that his committment to the country not be questioned.
Sachin is true about his commitment to the country not being questioned. However, I as a cricket fan would also say that my committment is unquestionable - that doesn’t qualify me to play. I have to perform on the stage and that’s all what counts. Opps! Seems Sachin has missed this ball too. Thumbs Down.

A combination of a few reasons or possibilities are:

The start of ICL (Indian Cricket League) may have sprung him an opportunity which he doesn’t want to miss. He did hint that he’d be continuing his association with Indian Cricket.

True to the Onedayers’ Cricket Team Rankings the first 6 teams (Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, England, Sri Lanka and Ireland) made it to the second round (in sharp contrast to only 4 out of top 6 teams in ICC Rankings) with 2 teams Pakistan (7th) and India (8th) getting replaced by other teams.

The rankings hold true even in the Semi Final line up, and 4 Teams from 1-5 rankings (Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, England and Sri Lanka) to make the next round. Most like a toss up between England and Sri Lanka, with possibly Sri Lanka going through since Jayasuriya is passing through a very special period. This all points to a question, whether the ICC Ranking system holds true? ICC gives high ranking to India and Pakistan (in the top 6) whereas their rating was at 7 and 8 (at the edge of qualification).

Trying to understand the role of Unfair expectations and violent behavior (in sports, government, friendship and even marital relationships) through sports. The various players in each area may have new names, but all of these roles are required to flame tensions.
Note: This is not a story about the fall of India and Pakistan Cricket Teams, but of Soccer, Domestic Violence, Career Struggle, and all our personal problems at one go.

Why do people spill out on streets and damage property when their favourite team loses? (why does the same thing happen when our representatives/ government takes out a bill which is not fair to all and which was not part of the election agenda)

The main cause of violent behavior is HIGH and UNFAIR EXPECTATIONS. We cheer our national/ city team due to our birth-affiliation. Now media drums up a picture which may not be in line with realities. Actually our expectations here are BORROWED EXTECTATIONS - they are given to us by the Media - or in other words these are media’s expectations.

Usually this is the PROCESS:

1. An unfairly high rating given to team by national media
2. Advertisers surpass their budgets to drum up people’s expectations further
3. Advertisers play on national sentiments to garner high sales (to cover up for their advertisement costs)
4. Pages getting dedicated to the Team as well as advertisements on these pages giving people a belief that they are backing the right horse
5. This all puts the team under huge pressure.
6. This pressure actually divides the team since no one would like to show up as the villian in the unlikely scenario of a loss. So all players are playing for their safety and team victory is a second goal.
7. The team loses due to pressure to similarly ranked opponents quite easily and sometimes can be beaten by other low ranked opponents.
8. Once the Team loses to an easy Opponent, the pressure on them is increased, as worried Advertisers/ Media/ Betters/ Fans start calling the players individually
9. Media now enters a Banned Domain. They start playing to the galleries. They start advising Players on how to play. They are advise Captains on whom to play. Obviously this advice is not for the players (usually they don’t get to hear it), it is for the Fans. So, if the team loses, they come out Shining! (if the team wins their theories still stay as they didn’t get tested). So, in the end, like an astrologer, they always win the heart of their readers. Readers, Who, end up thinking of media as being the EXPERT and the coach, captain and team as being foolish.
10. Violence takes root in terms of violent words flying (Media), altercations in press and finally physical violence (Fans).
11. Now starts the catharsis. Left with no option, but to appease the fans (especially if they are a large Voter Bank), measures are promised and heads have to roll.
12. IT IS NOT GOING TO BE A DIFFERENT STORY THE NEXT TIME.

The Cricket World Cup is a prime one-day International (ODI) cricket tournament, which is organized by cricket’s governing body – the International Cricket Council (ICC). This tournament is held once in every four years and the ICC decides the venue for the tournament. A total of sixteen nations are vying with one another for the World Cup this year. All contesting cricket teams from around the world were divided into four groups – Group A ( Australia, South Africa, Netherlands, Scotland), Group B (Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, Bermuda), Group C ( New Zealand, Kenya, England, Canada) Group D (West Indies, Ireland, Pakistan, Zimbabwe). In total, there will be 51 matches played them before they reach the final world cup match.

As of now the teams which have entered into the Super 8 stage include Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, West Indies, South Africa, England, Ireland and Bangladesh.

There have been some interesting highlights in the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup. Ireland’s cricket team is in the highlight, first for its tie with Zimbabwe (this is the third time a tie has happened in Cricket World Cup) and second, for it’s defeat of Pakistan, the result of made the team to qualify to the Super 8 stage. Australian Batsmen Mathew Hayden scored the fastest World Cup hundred from a total of 66 balls in the match between Australia and New Zealand. For the first time in World Cricket Cup, Bangladesh made it into the Super 8 stage, by defeating the Indian and Bermuda cricket teams.

Looking into each of the team making up the Super 8, we find all of them showing a lot of promise, which means exciting matches.

• Australia – This team is the World Cricket Cup’s defending champions. They have undergone a few setbacks with key players Andrew Symonds and Matthew Hayden facing injury problems and fast bowler Brett Lee out of the game because of injuries. However, their strong victory over opponents Scotland, Netherlands and South Africa, indicate that they are not about to let go their grip over cup victory.

• Bangladesh – This is a team that’s came up to the Super 8 stage much to everyone’s surprise. Their coach Dav Whatmore (he was the one who led Sri Lanka to a astounding victory in 1996), has brought out the best in the team members. Lot’s expected from their matches in the tournament.

• England – Their strong points are their key players Kevin Pietersen (world’ number one-ranked batsman) and Flintoff (all-rounder).

• However, in the world cup, the team faced defeat against New Zealand and they had to fight off Canada. Andrew Flintoff faced disciplinary action on account of late night drinking. They have to show all their capabilities to win over the team in the Super 8.

• Ireland – They are showing great strength and have much going their way, after the astounding defeat of Pakistan. Their plus points include strong team players and excellent strategy from coat Adrian Birrell.

• New Zealand – This is a team’s that’s much expected to get into the semi-finals stage with strong players, Daniel Vettori’s left-arm spin, and good batting.

• South Africa – They have simply won over teams in Group A and have sent out one clear message – they are clearly strong contenders of the cup. Good batting is their strong-hold; however, they still need a good spinner in their team.

• Sri Lanka – They were World Cricket Cup champions in 1996 and are putting up a strong fight in every match and winning. They have a skilled team with batsmen Kumar Sangakkara, skipper Mahela Jayawardene, openers Upul Tharanga and Sanath Jayasuriya, bowler Muttiah Muralitharan

• West Indies – Their opening wins against Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Ireland have put them in lead position. As hosts they are doing a lot to ensure that the tournament goes well and they have a host of match-winning players like Chris Gayle, Lara, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Dwayne Bravo. In this form they seem very likely to head for the semi-finals.

The Super 8 stage of the World Cup, will begin on Tuesday night between Australia and West Indies in Antigua and its results will decide on the four teams who will play the semi-finals.

However, despite all the fun and excitement on the cricket ground, the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup is overshadowed by the death of the Pakistan Cricket team’s coach Bob Woolmer. He was found dead in his hotel room, the next day after the team lost out to Ireland and there is some investigation going into this matter.
