NFL Draft Targets - Wide Receiver

I would be happy with Bowe, Rice or Meachem in the 1st round. Hill
would be a steal in the 2nd, but he probably won’t be available.
Allison, Higgins, and Gonzalez would be good 2nd round selections.
The other guys would all be solid 3rd round picks.

1. Robert Meachem 6′2 214 4.39 Tennessee
NFL Comparison: Javon Walker

Meachem has everything you look for in a receiver. He couples
excellent size with blazing speed. He can beat you deep or take a
short pass 70 yards for a touchdown. Had 71 catches for 1,298
yards and 11 touchdowns in the toughest conference in college
football. His production is unmatched by any of the other WR
prospects. He needs to work on route running and his ability to
beat the jam. He also needs to show NFL teams he is tough and
willing to go across the middle.

2. Sidney Rice 6′4 200 4.51 South Carolina
NFL Comparison: Randy Moss

Rice is a tall and deceptively fast receiver. He can out jump or run
by almost any defender. His body control is amazing. He just looks
natural catching the football. He is an excellent vertical threat as
well as a great redzone target. He has really soft, natural hands.
He had 72 catches for 1,090 yards and 10 touchdowns in the SEC.
He is still very raw, and he needs to run better routes and become
more physical at the line of scrimmage.

3. Dwayne Bowe 6′2 221 4.50 LSU
NFL Comparison: Anquan Boldin

Bowe is a big, physical possession receiver. He is a good athlete
who is a threat after the catch. He has solid speed, but he isn’t
going to stretch a defense too much. He is a tough guy who loves
to block. He has had problems with concentration and dropped
passes. Needs to run better routes. Had 990 yards & 12 TDs last
season.

4. Jason Hill 6′1 204 4.35 Washington St.
NFL Comparison: Reggie Wayne

Hill has been a productive WR for the past three seasons with
almost 3,000 receiving yards over that time. He is a very polished
and good all-around receiver who knows how to get open. He runs
precise routes and he has enough speed to beat you deep.

5. Aundrae Allison 6′0 192 4.39 E. Carolina
NFL Comparison: Chad Johnson

Smooth athlete. Good speed and a good route runner. Runs pretty
well after the catch. A legitimate deep threat. Productive with
almost 1,800 yards and 11 TDs over the past two seasons. He
needs to become a more physical WR, and he needs to show teams
he has a good attitude and work ethic.

6. Johnnie Lee Higgins 5′11 186 4.52 UTEP
NFL Comparison: Santana Moss

Higgins is a great athlete who is a terror to tackle in the open field
as a receiver and punt returner. He is a great all-around receiver.
He runs good routes and he is a big-time deep threat. Although he
lacks height and bulk, he will go up over taller defenders and catch
the ball much like Santana Moss and Steve Smith do on a regular
basis. He was amazingly productive with 82 catches for 1,319 yards
and 13 TDs. His only negative is his size. He has problems with
physical corners as he struggles to beat the jam.

7. Anthony Gonzalez 6′0 193 4.44 Ohio St.
NFL Comparison: Patrick Crayton

Gonzalez probably isn’t a great fit for the Cowboys because his is
nearly identical to Patrick Crayton. He is a small possession
receiver who knows how to get open. He might be slightly faster
than Crayton, but he is still mainly a possession WR. He has
amazing hands. He had good, but not great production last season
with 734 yards and 8 TDs.

8. Craig Davis 6′1 207 4.46 LSU
NFL Comparison: Roddy White

Davis is a pretty good all-around receiver. He has a good
combination of size and speed. He was nearly as productive as
Dwayne Bowe was. He was LSU’s deep threat. He runs well after
the catch. He is soft and doesn’t like to go across the middle. He
has serious upside, but he may lack the toughness and desire to
ever be a great NFL WR.

9. Paul Williams 6′1 205 4.45 Fresno St.
NFL Comparison: Terrell Owens

Williams is a guy with all the physical tools in the world. He is a
smaller version of T.O. He is more of an athlete playing WR than an
athletic WR. His hands aren’t great and he doesn’t run good
routes. His production as a senior was non-existent. He is however
really strong and fast. He can stretch a defense, break a tackle,
and out jump a defender. He is worth a 3rd or 4th round pick
because of his potential, but he will most likely be a bust.

10. Brandon Myles 6′0 183 4.41 West Virginia
NFL Comparison: Demetrius Williams

Myles flew under the radar because he was in a running offense.
He put up respectable numbers in such a scheme (522 yards & 8
TDs). He has great deep speed. He is a smooth athlete with great
body control. Myles needs to get bigger, and stronger. He also
needs a lot of work technique wise. He is a guy that seems to be
waiting for the opportunity to thrive.

The NFL Bad Boys and the Good Things They Do

The media loves to slam the bad boys of the NFL. Players such as Terrell Owens and Randy Moss are made to look like spoiled and obnoxious jerks by the media. As sports fans, you hear about their huge multi-million dollar contracts and their problems on and off the field.

As a recently retired NFL player, I know what goes on behind the scenes in the lives of NFL players. I know about both the good and the bad. I decided to write this article to let you know about the side of players that is rarely covered by the media because it is not considered exciting and newsworthy. I want to talk about the many wonderful things the “bad boys” of the NFL do to make this world a better place.

Randy Moss and Terrell Owen have both have worked extremely hard to make their dreams come true. There are 1800 players in the NFL and out of those 1800 players, the media seems to only care about the bad things players do. As they say in news, “if it bleeds it leads.” When was the last time you saw a major story on ESPN about a wonderful thing a player did to help a child or help their community? My guess is you probably cannot remember. But you certainly remember hearing about Terrell Owens not getting along with a player or a coach or Randy Moss doing a fake moon to the fans of the Green Bay Packers.

So for those of you that think Randy Moss and Terrell Owens are horrible people, please take a moment to read about the good things they have done.

Randy Moss:

* Spends time visiting local schools and meeting children

* Donates time and money to the Make a Wish Foundation to help terminally ill children

* Donates to the St. Joseph’s Home for Children in Minneapolis and an orphanage/clinic in Mexico

* Sponsors a celebrity fishing tournament to raise money for Smile Network International, which provides free reconstructive surgeries to impoverished children in developing countries

Terrell Owens:

* Runs the Terrell Owens Foundation and holds many events to raise money for The Alzheimer’s Association

* Holds youth football camps and is personally involved in teaching young players

* Auctioned his 2004 Philadelphia Eagles NFC Championship ring to raise money for hurricane Katrina relief

Now that you know more about the good these players are doing, I hope you will see them in a different light and not be so quick to judge them negatively.

Walls Gives Kidney To Ex-Dallas Mate Springs

Former Dallas Cowboys running back Ron Springs received a kidney that was donated by his former teammate Everson Walls. The operation was performed on February 28, 2007 in Dallas at the Medical City Hospital.

This is believed to be the first time ever that a former US professional sports teammates have shared an organ. The only other cases that involves former professional athletes are that of Greg Ostertag in 2002 when he gave a kidney to his sister while playing for the Utah Jazz, and in 1997 when Oscar Robertson donated a kidney to his daughter.

Springs has been suffering from diabetes for the last 16 years and he has been on the national transplant waiting list since 2004. The diabetes had already cost him his right foot, which was amputated, and his big and middle toes on his left foot. The disease had caused his hands to get knotted and curled and he was wheelchair bound and required dialysis three times a week.

If Springs’ body does not reject the transplant, he would no longer require dialysis and his hands would regain normality. After a rehabilitation, he should be able to walk again unaided.

Springs and Walls became good friends during Walls’ first training camp with the Cowboys. They played together just for four years, but their friendship continued. Their wives and children also became close friends and this further strengthened their friendship.

They wanted to keep the transplant quiet until it happened, but the news was given by Shawn, Springs’ oldest son, in December 2006. Shawn plays for the Washington Redskins as cornerback, Walls’ old position.

The Best Sport

It’s a crisp afternoon and you are sitting in the bleachers looking over a player scattered football field. You have a hot dog in one hand and your soda in the other. You can hardly hear the ref over the roar of the crowed. Maybe you are in this situation again, only this time you are watching a batter digging in behind the plate. Are you at a professional game watching your favorite pros getting ready to do battle? No, you are at a little league or youth football game.

There is nothing like watching your child, niece, nephew, and grandchild, or the neighbor’s kid going out on the court or field and giving it his or her all. With so many kids parked in front of the TV, or the computer it is a blessing that we have these organized sports so kids can get out there and learn the value of teamwork and exercise. It is not just exercise for the body but also for the mind. They learn to take instruction, constructive criticism, good sportsmanship, how to win and lose gracefully, and to share in a similar interest as others.

Youth sports can also have a positive effect on academics. If a young person is felling good about himself it will usually manifests it’s self in other areas of his or her life. If you have a child that is getting ready to enter high school you might want to remind him that most schools require you to carry at least a C average to play any sports. Sports can also have a positive effect on your child’s social skills. The child must learn to coordinate with his team members and take instruction from a coach to get a task finished. This now leads him to use these same exact skills he has learned when he enters the work force.

In this ever-changing world things seem to go faster. It is now almost uncommon for the evening family time that there was a generation or two ago. Even if you try to get your child to participate in some family time it still may be difficult. Try grabbing up the ball and heading out to the yard to through a few, or shoot some hoops. The child will enjoy you sharing in his passion and it will give you a little exercise yourself. Most importantly you can use this time to bond with your child at these crucial times in their lives.

What is the best sport? The best sport is the one that your child enjoys. Don’t push your child to the one you like. My oldest son tried Baseball, Karate, Soccer, and then finally stuck with Football, which he has a passion for. Let them test the waters so they don’t feel they are stuck in a sport they don’t like.

The World Soccer

INTRODUCTION:
I studied drawing at scool for many years, but I did not like it very much. My favourite subject at school were the olympic sports. I remember when I was a child and I played soccer with my friends. My best memory was when El Salvador,a small Central American country, qualified at the World Cup in 1982.I did not think “ES” defeat Mexico, sixth place in the FIFA World Championship in 1970.

Between 1978 and 1989, El Salvador had one of the worst civil war in the modern history of Latin America.Unfortunately, more than 70,000 people were killed by anti-communist dictatorships and marxist rebels.

Certainly, I was a big fan of Salvadoran soccer. I once said: “ES ganarà el Mundial ( El Salvador will be win the FIFA Soccer World 1982..!).However, the only thing that I clearly remember is that Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1 in the World Cup in Spain…Good Bye ES…!

Like many people, I think that soccer is “passion” in the world since 1910. When Cameroon, ex French colony in Africa, won its first gold medal at the XXVII Summer Olympics Games in Australia (2000)…Yaoundè, the capital city of Cameroon, was carnival for days.Cameroon was the second African country to win the gold olympic…

Unfortunately, Liberia was the nightmare of the Third World…From 1980 to 2005, more than 180,000 people were killed by dictatorships and AIDS…Currently, the poverty is a plague…Its percapita income of $ 80 a year is one of the worst in the World History. Hundreds of thousands of Liberian people fled the country. Like neighboring Sierra Leone, the African country has one of the highest number of orphans in the Africa in relation to its population.

Fortunately, Liberia is home to George Manneh Oppong Ousman Weah, one of the World`s most famous and charismatic players. In 1995 the FIFA selected George Weah as the best footballer of the Year.Certainly, he became a “World Star” in the 1990s.Like Iman (former super-model from Somalia) and Dikembe Mutombo (basketball player from the Democratic Republic of Congo), George Weah is an icon in the African continent. Since then, he made a great contribution to Liberian human development. Currently, George Weah is UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
He was national team captain for many years, but his country did not qualifity for the FIFA Football World. Ironically, Liberia was not one of the best teams of Africa in the 20th Century.

In 1994 Bolivia`s qualification for the finals was one of the surprises in the Third World sport. Under the leadership of Marco Etcheverry, Bolivia beat Brazil 2-0 in the Pre-World Cup in La Paz, Bolivia`s capital. I remember that Etcheverry, best known for his nickname “El Diablo”, was the idol of millions of Bolivians. It was one of the greatest sporting moments in Bolivian history since 1978. At that time, Bolivia, under the leaderships of Guadalupe Yañez, qualified for the FIBA Women`s World Championship in Seoul, South Korea´s capital.

In my opinion, the FIFA World Championship is a world without frontiers. Ferenc Puskas, was born on April, 1926, in Budapest, Hungary, made his debut in the friendly against Austria at the age of only fifteen…In the past Century, Puskas represented both Hungary, a former communist State, and Spain. At the time, Santamaria played for Uruguay and Spain. Traditionally American players have Latin American and African roots: Hugo Perez (El Salvador), Tab Ramos (Uruguay), Claudio Reyna (Argentina), Josmer Altidore (Haiti) and Freddy Addu (Ghana).
Today Gerald Asamoah, was born in Accra (Ghana), is one of the best footballers in Germany at the moment. While Alex (Alessandro) Santos, was born in Brazil, is a Japanese player.Santos played many times for Japan, including appearances at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Personally, I think that this Century will be an era of “Sports Miracles” in the Third World. Cote D`Ivoire, best known as Ivory Coast, qualified for the FIFA Soccer World 2006…Angola made its debut in Germany…Trinidad-Tobago made its debut in the World Cup…Paraguay won the silver medal in football in the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens.

Brian Urlacher - 2000 Draft Day Picks

Brian Urlacher was born on May 25, 1978 in Pasco, Washington. At 6 foot 4 inches and weighing 258 pounds, Urlacher is one of the most physical middle linebackers that the NFL has ever seen. Not only do many people feel that Urlacher is the best linebacker in the game, but some believe that he is also the top defensive player. While this may or may not be true, there is no denying that he brings a high level of intensity and desire to the football field. This can be seen in both the amount of games that his team wins as well as his individual statistics.

Urlacher attended Lovington High School in New Mexico, and led his team to a 14-0 record during his senior year. He did this by starring at offense, defense, and even special teams.

After most Division I schools passed him by, Urlacher decided to attend the University of New Mexico. Although he did not play at one of the perennial powerhouse programs, Urlacher made a name for himself over the course of several seasons. By the time he had become a senior the entire nation had taken notice, and he was named to several All American teams.

The Chicago Bears selected Urlacher with the ninth pick of the 2000 NFL Draft. He quickly became one of the best players in the league, and was named the 2000 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Additionally, Urlacher has been named to the Pro Bowl on five occasions.

Not only is Brian Urlacher one of the best football players in the world, but he is also a great guy off of the field. He does a lot of charity work, and even though he seems to be intimidating he is a great guy. With all of this in mind it is easy to see what makes Urlacher so special.

Tom Brady - 2000 Draft Day Picks

Tom Brady was born on August 3, 1977 in San Mateo, California. He stands 6 foot 4 inches tall and weighs approximately 225 pounds. Although he is the perfect size for an NFL quarterback, Brady brings much more to the game than that. He is also capable of moving around in the pocket if need be, and of course his smarts are among the best in the game as well. With all of that in mind it is easy to see why Brady has become one of the best players in the NFL over the last few seasons.

After playing high school football in the state of California, Brady decided to take his game to the University of Michigan. Although he would have to sit on the bench his first two seasons, he made a name for himself soon enough. During the 1998 and 1999 seasons Brady started every game for the Wolverines. He made the All Big Ten team in both seasons, and was even the captain of the team as a senior. His leadership and determination went a long way in helping the Wolverines achieve success while he was running the offense.

Brady was drafted in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. He was passed by time and time again by many teams, but soon enough he began to stake his revenge on them. After a slow rookie season, Brady stepped into the starting lineup in 2001; he has been there ever since. In 2001 he finished the season with 2,843 yards and 18 touchdowns.

During his time in the league Tom Brady has been named to the Pro Bowl Team four times, and has won three Super Bowls. Not only has Brady done a great job in making himself one of the best players in the game, but he has always done the same for his team as well.

Shaun Alexander - 2000 Draft Day Picks

Shaun Alexander was born on August 30, 1977 in Florence, Kentucky. Ever since he first started to play the game of football it was obvious that he was going to be a great player. Not only does Alexander have all the physical skills needed to be a great running back in the NFL, but his will to win is not matched by many. With both of these things combined it is easy to see why Alexander has established himself as one of the greatest running backs of all time.

During his senior year in high school Alexander was named “Mr. Football” in the state of Kentucky. Every year this award goes to the best player in the state, and Alexander definitely deserved this.

After a stellar high school career Alexander accepted a scholarship offer to play football at the University of Alabama. He did not waste any time showing just how good he was. As a freshman he put up great numbers, including one game where he ran for 291 yards. Alexander did more of the same during his sophomore and junior seasons, which in turn led him to declaring himself eligible for the 2000 NFL Draft.

The Seattle Seahawks choose Alexander with the 19th overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft. Although other teams passed by on his services, Alexander was ready to show them all what they missed out on. Although he played in all 16 games as a rookie, it was not until 2001 when he really started to take the league by storm.

Alexander has been named to the NFL Pro Bowl Team on three occasions, and has also won many other awards since joining the league.

With so many good years already under his belt, if Shaun Alexander can keep up this pace he will go down in history as one of the best running backs to every touch the field!

Steve Smith - 2001 Draft Day Picks

Steve Smith was born on May 12, 1979 in Lynwood, California. Although Smith did not have the easiest life as a young child, he worked as hard as he could to be a success on the football field. And even though he has made it big in the NFL, this has not stopped him from working hard day in and day out. This is one of the main reasons that Smith has become known as one of the top wide receivers in the league.

After high school Smith decided to attend Santa Monica Jr. College. Although he did not attend a four year college right out of high school, again, this did not stop him from working for his goals. After two stellar years at Santa Monica, Smith caught the eye of the coaching staff at the University of Utah. Although he had a great career at Utah, it was not until an impressive performance at the Blue-Gray All Star Game that he started to receive attention from NFL scouts.

In the third round of the 2001 NFL Draft the Carolina Panthers chose Smith. Although he did not get to play a lot of wide receiver during his first season, he did make his mark on special teams. Smith led all rookies with nearly 2,000 net yards on kick and punt returns. Not only was this top for rookies, but it also put him at the top of list among everybody in the league.

In 2002, Smith earned a spot as a starting wide receiver, and since then he has been showing up opposing defenses. Smith has been named to the Pro Bowl three times, and is sure to see many more of these as his career moves forward.

With plenty more years to play, Steve Smith has the chance to be one of the best wide receivers in NFL history.

Champ Bailey 1999 Draft Day Pick

Champ Bailey was born on June 22, 1978 in Folkston, Georgia. Although most people know him by the name “Champ” his real name is actually Roland. His mother gave him the nickname early on in life thanks to his many athletic achievements. It is safe to say that she was dead on when thinking that Bailey would be a great athlete in one sport or the next. Since his early playing days he has always been one of the best players on the field.

After a successful high school career Bailey went on to play at the University of Georgia. While playing for Georgia he became known as one of the top defensive players in the entire country. Opposing teams rarely had the chance to throw the ball on Bailey. And if they did it usually ended up as an interception.

In the 1999 NFL Draft the Washington Redskins selected Bailey with the seventh pick in the first round. Although many people felt that this was a bad choice, the Redskins were in much need of an outstanding cover corner.

Before the 2004 season got underway, Bailey was traded to the Denver Broncos. This trade was imminent, and both parties saw it coming long before the trade actually took place. After the trade Bailey signed a seven year contract worth approximately $63 million.

Bailey has been named to the All Pro Team on three occasions, and has also made the Pro Bowl team for the last seven seasons. This has solidified him as quite possibly the best cornerback in the league.

With a high level of athleticism and a good feel for the game, Champ Bailey has always been a great player. It is safe to say that he still has several more great seasons left in the tank. As long as the Broncos have him playing on the defensive side of the ball they have a good chance of winning!
