Goal Setting and Goal Achieving - Do You Write Down Your Goals and Review Them Daily?

Fewer than 10% of all people set and review goals on a regular basis. Goal setting is like mapping out a blueprint for your future. If you do not know what you are working towards you may very well end up somewhere else.

Goal setting is best done when you are looking at your life for at least the next 12 months. You can look at where you want to be in a year and work backwards to make smaller, more workable goals. Next you set goals for a quarter and see what you want to have accomplished three months from now. Make sure your goals are written down on paper.

During this three month period you set goals for weekly efforts that must be made and review them each day to make sure you are on track. Modify any goals that need to be changed and make sure you are always thinking about what you need to do to achieve your goals for that week. When you take action of any kind ask yourself if that action will help move you closer to your goals.

Goal achieving is the second, often overlooked part of goal setting. Just setting goals is not enough to make sure that you follow through with what you planned to do and what you said you were going to do

If you find after a few weeks that you are not accomplishing the goals you are setting for yourself take a closer look at what may be happening. Are you trying to do too much during the week? Are you setting unrealistic goals for yourself that are impossible to complete? Break each task down into an easily definable set of actions that can be taken to finish that goal.

Take a good look at the areas in your life in which you are setting these goals. Make sure that you have goals in more than just one area, even though that one area will be your main focus during the week. Set goals for work, relationships, personal (such as health or weight loss), and spiritual. If you are focusing on only one area of your life on a regular basis you may find it more difficult to accomplish anything fully.

Goal setting and goal achieving is done regularly by the most highly accomplished and successful people throughout the world. By writing down exactly where you are now and where you want to be at a later point in time you are extremely more likely to achieve your goals.

Gain Without Pain

At one point or another, we have all sacrificed our immediate quality of life for the sake of a future goal. We tell ourselves that, when we finally get the raise, the promotion, the college degree, the new home, it will all have been worth it. When the kids are older, when the business turns profitable, then we will slow down and enjoy life, we promise ourselves. We will make time for friends and hobbies and spiritual growth. We will start exercising and eating better. We will go on vacation and travel the world. But first, there are goals to be accomplished. “No pain, no gain,” we tell ourselves.

Energetically, it’s not a good strategy. The Law of Attraction is always at work, consistently handing us more of what we are already creating. If we create stress, we will attract more stress. If we do not put our own needs first, we will attract more situations in which our needs are not met. Eventually, we attain our goal, only to find that our quality of life stays the same. And along the way, we lose sight of what we were actually hoping to create in our life.

A goal is, after all, never about the goal itself. The goal is merely a representation of something you would like more of in your life. Would you like to start your own business? What does that business represent to you? The empowerment of being your own boss? The freedom to manage your time? Let’s say your perceived first step would be to finance your start-up costs. You go into debt. You stay at your day job, because of all the debt you’ve incurred. You’re working every minute of every day. You end up sacrificing both empowerment and freedom to reach your goal. And, not surprisingly, when your business starts turning a profit, you still feel as if something is missing.

Take another look at your goals. Each goal represents something you would like more of in your life. Can you distill this representation down to a word or short phrase? What is the essence of your goal? Now take a look at your present life circumstances. What next steps can you take that would capture this essence?

By creating the energy of what we desire in our life right now, we are harnessing the Law of Attraction to draw our goal towards us. And, because we are receiving the essence of our goal even as we move towards it, the journey itself brings us fulfillment. We become less attached to our goals, less dependent on their achievement. Our life becomes more about being here than getting there. Satisfaction and joy do not live in the future. They can only be created in the here and now.

How Badly Do You Want It?

Do you want to know whether or not you will achieve your goals? Just look at your life, and you’ll know! What you consistently do in your life is a very clear prediction of where you will be in two years’ time. Your level of self discipline is a crystal ball – there is a definite link between discipline, self esteem and accomplishment. Look how many hours you spend dedicated to the accomplishment of your goals, and your future will reveal itself to you.
“We shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty.” - John F. Kennedy

Successful people are “Outcome Driven”. They know exactly what they want. They focus on the reward, not the process. They highly respect, protect and prize their time. They do things in the order of their importance. Their time is prioritized. Frank Lloyd Wright said, “I know the price of success: dedication, hard work, and an unremitting devotion to the things you want to see happen.” Mike Litman says, “You don’t have to get it right; you just have to get it going. Take action NOW. In life, you’re either consistent or you’re non-existent.”

Do you prepare your day with a Do List of the six things you absolutely have to accomplish the next day? Is your vision so clear, so compelling, so exciting, that you can’t go back to sleep again after thinking of it? Or do you drift along, side tracked and buffeted by every new quick buck scheme and MLM dream, grabbing here and there and never sticking to anything? Or are you an unstoppable machine, up early and rearing to go? How worn is the snooze button on your alarm clock? Do you even NEED an alarm clock? And please check your philosophy. Your entire life and business is a reflection of your philosophy.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said, “The heights by great men reached and kept / Were not attained by sudden flight, / But they, while their companions slept, / Were toiling upward in the night.” How many hours a day do you dedicate to your magnificent obsession? If you see a need for change, CHANGE NOW. Take charge. It’s not too late! Make it happen. Align yourself with Eagles, cut the ducks out of your life and kick any money making scam that isn’t working to the curb. Get a new telephone number and only give it to winners. You can do it.

Goal-Setting for Success - 7 Practical Steps to Achieve Your Goals

Stephen Covey, “The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People”, says that every highly successful person has written down their personal (as well as professional) goals. This article introduces you to some powerful tips and techniques to help you not just set your goals but significantly up the chances of achieving them, so you can achieve the success you want!

  1. On a sheet of paper, note down what you’d like to achieve by, say, the end of the year. Just the sheer act of writing something down seems to make it much more likely it will happen.
  2. Now look at your list and work out realistically what you will achieve in the timescale. Make it challenging but possible. And add a date when you will have achieved each goal.
  3. Then really up the chances of you achieving your goals by following the ‘4 P’s approach’: powerful, personal, positive, present-tense. For instance, if you decide you want to get fitter and you want to finish the long report you’ve been writing, your goals might read like this:

    • I feel fit enough to run all the way from my house to the bus-stop and still have breath to talk to the bus-driver - 30 June
    • My report is complete, typed up and submitted to the board - 22 May

Each goal is now clear, and you’ll know when you have achieved it.

  4. In addition to writing something down, the power of intent can make it far more likely something will be achieved - in other words, you imagine very clearly how things will be if you achieve your goal. For each goal, imagine how you will feel, how things will have changed, what that will be like for you. Use those positive feelings to help motivate you to take the necessary action.
  5. Now brainstorm all the small steps you could take to get you to your goal. Include any silly ideas (sometimes they are the best ones!) and check you’ve thought of everything. Include other people’s ideas if you like.
  6. Decide which steps you will take to achieve your goal, and put a realistic timescale or deadline on each.
  7. Finally decide which step you will take today - and do it!! Keep regularly reviewing your goals and your progress and you really can achieve what you set out to achieve.

Bonus Tip: If any task you have to undertake feels really hard, don’t procrastinate - get it done. The sooner it’s out of the way the better. Then reward yourself for having achieved it - a walk in the fresh air, meal out with friends, cup of coffee and a good book, or whatever.

Dream Killers & Your Goals

I come in contact with so many different people and I am amazed by how many them have been told that they can’t do something or that their goals are unattainable. I am an active member of the infamous Myspace community. I noticed that although a great number of my friends on myspace are in the music business a very large number of my friends include discouraged teenagers with dreams and goals that they have been told are ridiculous. I think it is of the utmost importance that we not allow anyone to discount our dreams or our goals.

Some people will tell you that your dreams and goals are unrealistic. Some people will tell you to be more practical. Most of these people will tell you these things under the guise of looking out for YOUR best interest when in actuality it comes from their own low expectations, limited vision, past failures and/or their own tendency to take the path of least resistance.

While they may think they mean well, they are really suggesting that you cannot achieve your goals and should therefore settle for less. Don’t do it!

For a person with ambitious dreams and goals being practical leads to an extremely disappointing and unfulfilling life. Never give up on your hopes and dreams for the sake of being practical. If you want to be singer don’t go to college and major in education to appease the need to be practical. Major in music and if you must satisfy the practical monster, minor in something you have a passion for (or double major). You do yourself and the world a huge disservice when you abandon your dreams, your goals, your passion, or your 1st love.

While others may tell you that you can’t…. believe me when I tell you that you can! You can accomplish any goal you set for yourself, “Goals are the fuel in the furnace of achievement.” (Brian Tracy)

Here are a few tips for setting and accomplishing your goals from my favorite book The Great Big Book of Wisdom by Brian Tracy:

  • Decide exactly what you want in every area of your life; you can’t hit a target you can’t see.
  • Start with a picture of your goal as already achieved in the future, and work back to the present. Imagine the steps that you would have taken to get from where you are now to where you want to be.
  • Write out your goals on 3X5 index cards; review them twice each day. Make a list of 10 things you want to achieve in the next year.
  • Create your own poster, covered with pictures of the things you want to acquire. All improvement in your life begins with an improvement in your mental pictures.
  • Go on a 30-day PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) diet; think and talk about accomplishing your goals.
  • Set high goals and standards for yourself; resist the temptation of the comfort zone. The tendency to follow the path of least resistance guarantees failure in life.
  • Decide in advance to use every adversity or setback as a spur to greater effort.
  • Setting deadlines for your goals activates your subconscious mind and reinforces your determination.
  • Continually bombard your mind with thoughts, words, pictures, and people consistent with the goals you want to achieve.
  • Put it in motion and start working towards achieving your goals.

Goal Setting - Kinds of Goals

Today we’re going to talk about the different kinds of goals and what this means to and for you.

It is just as important to understand and act upon the different kinds of goals that you have as it is to have goals in the first place. I am sure you will agree that all aspects of your life are inter-related, yes? The physical part of your life, your health, body condition, your environment whether it’s home, work, or where you play, affects the spiritual or metaphysical areas of your life which is also related to and affecting your financial situation in life, or at the very least reflected in and by it.

When one area is lagging, the others are affected.

This is why it is imperative that you not only focus on one area of your life and goals. One affects the other, and success in one area will affect your ability to attain success in another.

It’s often not easy to separate your goals, even when you try, so why waste the effort? Why not use that to your advantage?

Maybe we could categorize our goals more simply into three very basic groups: physical, financial, and emotional. Much easier to see the inter-related factors when they are viewed like this, isn’t it?

Physical goals can be for your own physical needs, health related such as losing weight, being stronger, more fit, or something like stopping smoking.

Financial goals aren’t always about your bank account either. Financial goals here are any that are related to money in your life. That can be reducing debt, reducing spending or costs, improving income, savings, or investments. They might also include the ‘reason’ you are trying to reach that goal; purchasing a new home, the car you dream of owning, taking vacations, visiting friends and family, more time to spend with your family, taking up or spending more time with hobbies, giving more to your church or community or other causes, caring for your family,

Emotional goals are the toughest to define, but perhaps the easiest to affect change. A goal such as “I want to be happy” isn’t a real goal, you first need to define what makes you happy, what you think would make you happy. Personally, I’m not a big believer in ‘making’ anyone, even myself, happy though. I believe it is a simple choice we make and not a choice made by others for us. That, my friend, is just an excuse and a way to not accept responsibility for ourselves, our actions, or our situation.

If we are to attain happiness then, is it solely through our own efforts? By our own making? Or are you mistakenly looking for someone else to ‘make’ you happy?

Emotional goals might be aimed at your relationships, personal, professional, spiritual. A goal to be in a happy marriage, or to control your anger, or to not be manipulated by others, is an emotional goal.

They are all part of what makes you be you. The person you are now, the person you want to become.

So, take your notebook and write across the top Physical Goals, Financial Goals, and Emotional Goals.

Then list beneath each one the things you are trying to attain in each.

Next, write at least one reason ‘why’ you must reach that goal.

Notice how many times one goal from another column relates or reflects goals in another? Even the ‘why’ will be repeated.

Now, write at least one thing for each that you can begin to do, today, that will move you along that path to attaining that goal.

Prioritize the list then choose the top 3 from each column. They can be inter-related, that’s even better. One goal helps you reach the other.

Set a time limit where possible, then dedicate yourself to reaching that goal

    Take action. Rinse and repeat.

Check Lists - An Important Key To Increased Productivity

    Making a List . . .

One of the things most common among the most successful people, in my experience, has been that they all make lists. To-do lists, and check lists.

Today, we are going to focus on our ‘check list.’

For any task that has several steps it is very helpful to maintain a checklist for the specific items.

If you’ve ever visited a public restroom you have likely seen that little list on the door, right?

From the greatest of tasks to the most menial, having a checklist is a great way to make sure that things are done, done properly, in the best sequence, and on time.

When I was a university student, I worked as the manager of a bakery. These checklists were key to every day being as successful as possible.

The list also provided a way to delegate work, and a contact point (ie. who was responsible) for when things were not done as they should have been.

While individual checklists will certainly vary greatly, we can summarize the basics here to get you started.

If it is necessary, list the times for when tasks are to be started or completed by. This is a good way to keep things on schedule.

Another great thing about checklists is that it makes you automatically schedule your other work and duties around the things that are already scheduled.

That is, if say for instance, you have ‘check email at 9am’ on your list, then at 8:30 when you realize you need to ‘check your printer paper’ you will know you must do that now, before your next scheduled task.

Not all checklists need to be so rigid. In fact, some of your list will be better off left to ‘do today’ or ‘this week.’ But for the most part, it will make you more productive to set a specific time for starting and finishing these tasks.

Checklists will also help you later as you expand and are delegating more of your work, even your goals, to others.

But we’ll save ‘delegation’ for another time.

Keep Your Goals In Plain View

If there’s one thing I can’t stress enough, it is the importance of keeping your action steps (those daily tasks we use to get us closer to our overall goals) in plain view. You see, simply having recorded goals is not enough to assure you of success. You have to have regular sessions with yourself to review whether or not you are on your way towards achieving them.

Regularly reviewing your goals and action steps ensures that you’re making progress with regards to reaching your intended destination. Achievement in most anything is going to take some level of effort. When you don’t see immediate results there’s always the danger of procrastination setting in. Setting designated times with yourself to refresh your goals does wonders for beating down the procrastination monster that wants to rob us of our dreams.

Here’s an action plan you can put to work now:

Try to take about 15 minutes or so each day to review your “projects/to do list” (remember this is the list of goals that support your longer-term goals, they might also include short term goals).

Take a second to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Give yourself a little pat on the back for the items on this list that have already been accomplished. Then re-write a new list. Include the items that have not been completed, or any items that you need to add. Keeping a new list ensures that things don’t get cluttered.

Another thing you might consider is saving the previous days “Projects/to do list”. It can serve as a nice reminder of your previous achievements.

Regularly reviewing your supporting goals and short term goals will help tremendously in keeping you grounded on the tasks that need to be done in order to get to where you want to be with regards to the goals you have set for yourself.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it a million more times I am sure :-) Rome wasn’t built in a day, but it was built. Make persistence your partner, and each day you’ll find that you’re getting that much closer to where you want to be, both professionally and personally.

Achieve Your Dreams With Planning, Patience, Passion, and Persistence!

Did you make a New Year Resolution? Are you making steady progress, or are you in a rut? Maybe it’s time to take a hard look at what you’ve achieved. Remember January 1, when you made a promise to yourself, and said I Resolve To _______. Maybe you decided it was time to earn a college degree, or learn a new language, start a business, run a marathon, contribute time and effort to a favorite cause, pay off debt, or get fit . . . the possibilities are endless. You decided 2007 is the year you will achieve one of your dreams. If you didn’t take action why not do it today? You can pursue your dreams, resolutions and goals any day of the year!

Consider this simple, common sense I Resolve To Formula: Start with one of your dreams. Turn that dream into a resolution. Make that resolution a reality with goals - small steps, taken one at a time, one day at a time.

    Dream + Resolution + Goals = Achievement!

With that simple formula in hand, maybe you’re not sure how to proceed? Not sure what to do first? Consider these Five I Resolve To Steps:

    1. Dare To Dream: Open your mind to the possibility that, YES’, you will achieve your dream if you pursue it passionately, with patience and persistence. ‘YES’ you will achieve your dream if you work hard, learn from your mistakes, and strive to stay positive even when you hit obstacles and bumps in the road.
    2. Decide: Make decision, a firm promise, a solid commitment to pursue your dream, one small step at a time, one day at a time for the rest of the year. Make your dream ‘real’ by transforming it into a ‘RESOLUTION - RESOLVE to ‘take action, achieve, change, do, learn’.
    3. Define: In one simple sentence, clearly, concisely, realistically specify your resolution - what you will achieve in 2007 and where you will end up. Personally, one of my Lifetime Resolutions is to exercise for 30-minutes each day by walking, biking, stretching, swimming, lifting weights, playing tennis, doing Yoga. I add new things to the mix to keep me interested and motivated year after year.
    4. Develop A Plan: Make your resolution reality, first, by doing your homework. Educate yourself, knowledge is power! What are all the steps, tasks, activities that you need to pursue to make your resolution happen. Second, break all those steps, tasks, activities down into small daily goals that you can tackle one at a time. Write everything down! Maintain a Daily Resolution Diary, a journal, notebook, blog - whatever works best for you - where you can add time lines and deadlines to your plan, track your progress in daily/weekly Check-Ins, make course corrections when you’re stuck, and reward yourself when you succeed! Success, after all, breeds success. It’s a key motivator in your journey that builds confidence and self esteem.
    5. Do It Daily: Just ’showing up’ is often half the battle. If you devote 30-minutes each day, or a few hours each week, that effort compounds like interest on money in the bank. It will show results over time. You don’t have to fulfill your dream, keep your resolution, achieve all your goals overnight. You can lower the bar just a little, take the pressure off, take one small step each and every day, for life - A Lifetime Resolution. Why achieve a dream, then move on to the next one? Why not keep your dreams with you for good.

I’m not promising instant success. I’m not suggesting achievement without the benefit of TIME, ENERGY, IDEAS, AND WILLPOWER. Yes, it would be wonderful if we could just ‘think positive thoughts’ all day, and our heart’s desire would magically appear. Visualize a million dollars and your mailbox will fill with checks made payable to you instead of stacks of bills! WOW, that would be great, wouldn’t it?! Go ahead, try it. Wish to win the lottery. Think positive thoughts. Visualize winning the lottery and the check should soon be in the mail based on those self-help theories!!! That’s silly, silly, silly wishful thinking. If you believe that, you’re going to be disappointed. If someone is feeding you that line, they’re trying to sell you snake-oil and line their own pockets with gold, not yours. Anyone who promises ’something for nothing’ is in search of gullible, lazy people to ‘rip off’ - and those people are likely to get ‘nothing’ for the ‘nothing’ they invested.

I truly believe in the power of positive thought, being optimistic, having faith, and hope. Those qualities can point you in the right direction, and they help during the tough times when obstacles impede progress. I assure you, obstacles will get in the way. You will have days when you, your dream, your life will seem like they’ve been hijacked, Overtaken By Events. But, beware of anyone who suggests that you brought these events upon yourself because you weren’t thinking positive thoughts, or you were being negative. Positive thoughts, alone, won’t make wealth appear magically - any more than negative thoughts will make your world crumble around you.

Everyone has some negative thoughts, it’s impossible to be positive and happy every minute of every day. Bad things happen to good, moral, honest, generous, loving, grateful, humble, church-going people every day - and it’s absolutely crazy to suggest they brought troubles on themselves through their own thoughts!! If someone feeds you this nonsense, do yourself a big favor, run the other way as fast as you can.

When you encounter obstacles to your dreams, take a deep breath, study the obstacles, develop a plan of attack, and know things will get better. Don’t blame yourself for the obstacles, even if you’ve made mistakes that created them. Guilt will drag you down instead of propelling you forward. Take responsibility for your actions, admit to yourself that you made mistakes, then use them to your advantage. Some of my most profound successes were born from ‘lessons learned’ after I’d made mistakes. I knew wallowing in guilt would just make me feel bad. I knew I had to move on, get going in a new direction with my dream, my life - or have the courage to admit that maybe it was time to pursue a new dream.

Bottom line, if you truly want to achieve something in your life, you first have to identify ‘what’ you want to achieve, along with the how/when/where/why you’re going to achieve it. Then you have to’act’ with single-minded passion and steely determination. You have to be focused, flexible and willing to revise your plans, change your tactics as you learn and grow.

Believe in yourself and your dream. Have some fun. Consider becoming a Resolutionista - someone who makes and keeps New Year Resolutions and enjoys doing it - someone who revels in the journey! What do you have to lose? You have less to lose by ‘trying’, than if you ‘do nothing at all’! Stop procrastinating. Stop living the ‘Someday, Someday, Someday Syndrome’. Instead Live Your Dream!

The ABC’s Of Goal Setting For Moms

I once heard that G.O.A.L. stands for Go Out And Live. This is especially exciting for a woman who has recently decided to stay at home with kids full time, is buried in laundry, spends hours clipping coupons, and is constantly cleaning and wiping a myriad of bodily fluids off of little people all day. Just because you have committed the bulk of your days to your children, does not mean that your personal hopes and dreams are over or even on indefinite hold.

I’ve extended these tips to be the ABCDE’s of Goal Setting. They can be applied to your dream of leaving full time employment and staying home, quitting smoking, losing weight, running a marathon, or to any of your personal ambitions.

A- Accountability. Tell everyone your goal. I know this sounds scary. It is, but the more people you share your goal with, the more people will hold you accountable to your goal. My friend Kari is a Mary Kay rep and she let all her current customers know that she was trying to make it to the “Queen’s Court”, which is a prestigious accolade within her organization. Did we help her by purchasing more product? You bet. We also followed up with her on a regular basis asking her how she was doing. She did make it to the “Queen’s Court” and we were all very proud of her and felt like we helped play a part in achieving her goal.

The other part of accountability is setting a date. Make a realistic time line of exactly how long you think it will take you to achieve your goal. You may want to start with mini time lines within your ultimate dead-line. This will help make you accountable to your goal and you will have a much greater chance of achieving it. You also increase your odds if you write this time line down and tape it in a place that you will see everyday. A goal without a deadline is just a dream.

    B- Believe in yourself
Of course believing in yourself is a key to anyone’s success. To help this along, you might want to make the first few people you tell about your goal, support people in your life that also believe in you. I always start with my loving and always supportive husband and my parents. I also started recently sharing some of my personal goals with my in-laws and they have been an amazing source of unconditional support. Once you believe in yourself, you really can accomplish anything.

    C -Changes
Be willing to stay flexible enough to make changes to your plan along the way. Life does happen to all of us. There will always be pregnancies, babies, car problems, lost jobs, and computer viruses. Find the balance between being flexible enough to change course a little and still be determined to accomplish the goal.

    D - Drive and Determination
Do whatever it takes to fuel the drive and determination to achieve your goal. Make the time to stay on course with your time line. Check in with your support group to help encourage you and keep you accountable. Tape pictures or written versions of the goal all over your house, but just keep at it. Put visual reminders of your goal (pictures or notes) in 5 places: Your mirror, refrigerator, desk, car, and by the front door.

    E - Encouragement
Surround yourself with reminders of previously accomplished goals. If you have ever won a contest, a trophy, or medal of any kind, take them out and remind yourself you can do it. Also, while God sometimes has a way of putting a fire under us to accomplish our goals, He also can put wind in our sails to encourage us. Sometimes the small voices of our children telling us we can do it or even a compliment from a friend can be the encouragement we need to keep going.
So get started and Go Out And Live!!
