The Cat Lover’s Survival Guide - Book Review

Since a few cats had owned me a very long time ago, I thought I knew a thing or two about them. Although “The Cat Lover’s Survival Guide” is directed toward first-time cat owners, I still found quite a few pointers that were new to me. Among those, my favorite tip is on page 17: “How to: Make a T-shirt Cat Bed.” I also had no idea that cats could have zits at any age.

After a simple personal story with her cats in the introduction, Karen Commings, the writer, methodically sets out to inform her readers about cat care.

In Cleaning Tips, she addresses all kinds of cleaning, from cleaning after the cats to keeping things clean for kitties. Cost Saving Tips and Safety Tips are written with great care, putting the welfare of the cats first.

Then follow the Feeding Tips, Grooming Tips, Behavior Tips, and Seasonal Tips.

The final two sections are titled “Helpful Hints for Cats with Disabilities” and “Helpful Hints for Cat Owners with Disabilities.” These two sections were totally alien to me with the exception of the part on aging cats.

At the end of the book, on two pages, is a short list of pet supply sources, some of which are on the internet. Additional reading sources are also linked in each section.

“The Cat Lover’s Survival Guide” presents its material directly, without beating around the bush or filling its pages with cat stories. The information is well-organized, sectioned, and bulleted throughout, making the book an excellent reference material for any cat owner.

The book is pleasant to look at with interspersed, amusing cartoon-like drawings, and the font is large and clear enough for most anyone to read. The language of the book is clear and direct. As an example, here is an excerpt from the Grooming Tips section: “Store your cat’s grooming tools in a plastic bag with some loose catnip to make the grooming session more appealing.”

The Cat Lover’s Survival Guide has 128 pages and is in paperback with ISBN-10: 0764115766 and ISBN-13: 978-0764115769.

Karen Commings is an award-winning author, specializing in pets. A former columnist for Cat Fancy, Central Pennsylvania’s Apprise and Computers in Libraries magazines, she was a contributing editor for Pets.com and a regular contributor to http://www.Petplace.com She writes regularly for CatWatch and DogWatch, the newsletters of the Cornell University School of Veterinary Science. More than of her 400 articles, essays, poems and short stories have appeared in print. Her books are: The Dog Lover’s and Cat Lover’s Survival Guides, Helpful Hints for Solving Your Most Pesky Pet Problems, Manx Cats: A Complete Pet Owner’s Manual, The Guide to Owning a Birman Cat, The Guide to Owning an Exotic Shorthair Cat, The Guide to Owning an American Shorthair Cat, Shelter Cats, and The Shorthaired Cat: an Owner’s Guide to a Happy, Healthy Pet.

The joy and comfort of owning a cat comes with the responsibility of taking proper care of one’s pet, and in the pages of this book, an owner will find a lot of practical information. Whether used as reference or read from beginning to end, this book is a necessity for any cat lover.

Angels at the Crossroads by Ann H. Gabhart - Book Review

Angels at the Crossroads: Jerry Shepherd’s Story of Redemption and Love
by Ann H. Gabhart

iUniverse (2006)
ISBN 9780595387076

Reviewed by Debra Gaynor for Reader Views (01/07)

When Jerry Shepherd stole a car he accidentally killed the owner. The police caught up with him after a high speed chase. Jerry hoped the officer was a good shot for he did not wish to continue his life. Just as he was about to exit the car he heard the quiet words, “Peace Be Still.” A great sense of calm came over him and from that moment on he belonged to the Lord.

Jerry Shepherd was raised in Kentucky not far from Louisville. His home life was rough. His mother was unforgiving and never seemed satisfied with anything he did. He ran away from home more than once. Once after returning home again, his father met him with open arms but his mother turned her back and walked away. It seemed that no matter where he ran God always placed an angel in his path. There was always someone to direct him back toward home. Jerry didn’t want to continue his life and sought death more than once. After pleading guilty of 2nd degree murder Jerry spent time in prison.

Jerry turned his life over to the Lord and was never the same. His life had new meaning. His book is an introspective look at his life before and after coming to know the Lord. Jerry went on to sing with the gospel quartet “The Patriots.”

“Angels at the Crossroads” by Ann H. Gabhart was an inspiration to me. Jerry’s life story is beautifully told. I could picture the young man constantly on the run and not always sure what he was running from. The plot flowed smoothly, telling of the turning point in Jerry’s life and then looking back at his past. The cover is beautifully done with a sun peaking through the clouds. It made me think of hope that we each need. It is with honor that I highly recommend this book to all. For everyone needs the hope that Jerry found when he looked in his rearview mirror at the law and then heard that small quiet voice that said, “Peace Be Still.”

“Intrinsic Desires” by Brandon Gene Petit - Book Review

Intrinsic Desires
by Brandon Gene Petit

AuthorHouse (2006)
ISBN 1420891995
Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (2/07)

Whenever I read a really well written piece of work, I feel intimidated about following up with writing a review. “Intrinsic Desires” is one of those books that are a tough act to follow. It is difficult to write the perfect words to convey how much this writing touched me, but I will try my best.

“Intrinsic Desires” is a collection of neo-gothic type poems written by Brandon Gene Petit. They are incredible. I love the darkness and the depth that the words carry within each poem. Sometimes I felt more like I was reading a spell and feeling the magic of the words wrap around my soul, than reading just a poem.

I would love to know where Petit takes his inspiration from. I am sure it comes from events happening in his life, but what specifically I can only imagine from his writings. In addition to some of the darker themes, he also mentions vampires, dragons, knights and ghosts. I love these kinds of themes because the fantasy aspects that they contain take away from the boringness of the mundane realities of life.

The poem that I related to most was “Whole.” It begins:

“Trust has become a useless organ,
Lying limp and dead at your side,
A martyr slain in the name of knowledge,
To rest in the shadow of your pride…”

The poems seem like they were written at a different time or maybe in a different reality. I felt like the book I was reading should have been a cloth-covered hardbound edition with old, yellowing pages. In time, these pages will be old and yellowing because I plan to reread these writings over and over again.

I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy the darker fantasy novels. If you are a high school or college student that needs to write a paper about a poem or a poet, “Intrinsic Desires” is definitely the book for you.

“Sexual Transgressions: A Chain of Events” by Miranda Ifedigbo - Book Review

Sexual Transgressions: A Chain of Events

AuthorHouse (2006)

“Sexual Transgressions: A Chain of Events” is Miranda Ifedigbo’s debut novel. It is a story about family entanglements, human failings and heroism. I found the whole story very interesting but something so shocking happens in the middle of the story that I could not put down the book from that point on until I had finished it. The book also comes with a nice addition of a CD with two of Ifedigbo’s songs that are referenced throughout the novel. The songs are beautifully written and sung.

The main character, Madison Owens, seems to have it all. She is a very successful 38- year-old corporate attorney on the fast track to make partner at her firm. She has a close knit family that she loves very much, especially her brother Isaiah, a prominent, well-loved minister. Isaiah appears to have an enviable life, a job he loves, a wife and child who adore him, great friends and a beautiful home. He is enormously successful and his services are usually filled to capacity with people turning to him for spiritual guidance. But Isaiah has secrets that would destroy everything he has built, and lives in constant fear of exposure.

Very early in the story, Madison Owens is awakened from her sleep by the persistent ringing of the doorbell and she does not realize that her life will never be the same again as she opens the door. All families have secrets and the ones that are being hidden by hers will destroy some lives and forever change others. The author does a great job exploring human emotions and weaknesses and was not afraid to show people at their very worst. As the secrets are unleashed and the characters are pushed to the brink of despair, Madison and her sister Victoria manage to reach deep inside to find strength, dignity and forgiveness. Life goes on and in the midst of all this crisis and pain Madison is surprised to find a love that she has never experienced.

Overall, I found the book to be a very enjoyable read. I would recommend “Sexual Transgressions: A Chain of Events” to anyone who enjoys a good drama. The well thought out list of group study questions at the end make it perfect for a book club selection. Ms. Ifedigbo is obviously a very talented writer and an accomplished musician. I hope to see more of her books published in the near future.

“A Season of Change” by D C Elmore - Book Review

A Season of Change

Well known novelist, Sierra Stanton, is having a lousy year. During the same week that she loses her mother to cancer, she also is betrayed by her lover and her best friend. Needing to recover from these events and overcome writer’s block, Sierra takes off to Vail, Colorado for a month of relaxation and recuperation. Shortly after arriving, she meets Asha, whom she is immediately attracted to. Unbeknownst to Asha, Sierra is one of her favorite authors

Asha’s family is involved with running the ski lodge. They see Sierra’s true qualities and encourage her relationship with Asha. Both Sierra and Asha have been hurt in previous relationships and carry some baggage. Their attraction to each other has a very strong pull and they continue to find themselves enjoying their time together. Just as Sierra is starting to let her guard down; a vicious, selfish woman from Asha’s past shows up and starts stirring up trouble. Asha has to work harder to gain Sierra’s trust, but in doing so they draw closer as Sierra reveals more to her about her past.

This is a really enjoyable romantic novel. The issues that both women deal with are very realistic. Elmore develops their characters so well that you will find yourself rooting for them as if they are real people. There are also other issues going on in the sidelines that make the plot seem more realistic, such as the search and rescue emergency situations that crop up. Her descriptions of the settings are also very realistic. As I read this, on a cold winter day, I felt like I was really in Vail with the ladies. I also found the love scenes to be very well written and passionate. “Season of Change” is definitely a novel that will be enjoyed!

“Turn of the Century - 2100″ by Charlie Pedersen - Book Review

Turn of the Century: 2100

In 2085, 9-year-old Aly was summoned to the bedside of her namesake, Alyson, her grandmother. The 105-year-old Alyson is dying and had been living on a Rejuvenator the last 15 years of her life. Four generations of women sit in the room, all scientists. Aly knew that her granny wanted something from her but didn’t know what; she knew she’d been preparing for a quest all her short life. Granny had written a book, “Turn of the Century.” Aly had read it over and over. Her mission would have something to do with that book and with two letters that her grandmother showed her. She was told that she could not read the letters yet, the time wasn’t right.

Years previously, when Alyson was in the prime of her life, she was part of a particle physicist team. A photon probe was sent from the year 2108. The probe offered warnings if messing with the time space continuum a paradox could take place. Events could be altered.

Five Oracles were included in the probes. The oracles were suggestions to be presented to the UN. The oracles concerned human rights, environment, multi-culturalism, international medical and organic health and militarism.

At age 29 Alyson is allowed to read her grandmother’s letters. Her quest is clear. She is to find Jacque. In less than four hours after meeting him, they are in love.

What if we were offered a chance to redo the past? Would we heed the warnings? Would we make changes? What would we be willing to sacrifice?

“Turn of the Century,” by Charlie Pedersen, is a “timely” (pun intended) novel. Mr. Pedersen is an extremely talented author. The characters are well developed. Aly is a multi-dimensional character. She is brilliant and yet has a soft side. The plot is filled with intrigue, twists, suspense and romance. While there is definitely a serious statement in this plot, I also felt the author strived to lighten it with humor. A case in point is the relationship between Aly, Alyson and Jacque. I was a little intimidated when I first began reading this book. I am definitely not a “science person.” But Mr. Pedersen has included Appendices that assist in defining terms and statistics to help even science-challenged persons like myself to understand the theory behind the plot. To sum it up this was a fascinating book. Well done Mr. Pedersen. I highly recommend “Turn of the Century” to fans of science fiction.

The Startup Garden- a WorkSavvy Startup Book Review

Do you want a no-nonsense, jargon-free, helper to guide you on starting and running your new business? Then look no further than Tom Ehrenfeld’s The Startup Garden (ISBN 0071368248, McGraw Hill, 2002, and still as vital as the day it was published).

The book is written by a widely experienced small business journalist. It is a pleasure to read and for someone wary of business semantics, Tom’s book will keep them at ease. Its format makes the information readily assimilable; there are plenty of breaks; short case-studies and practical descriptions of where you can get further help.

The Startup Garden treats entrepreneuring like gardening, so it’s about cultivating your business and caring for it as the living thing that it is. Tom is as much concerned with your own learning and development, as with the commercial development of the enterprise.

The book begins with an examination of why you might be wanting to start a business and what you want to get out of it. It shows how you can approach planning the business and make sure that you learn from the feedback that flows from operations. Tom’s approach to business numbers and finance helps you get clear on the big picture and what aspects of money matter to the business. He is of the school that considers raising large sums of external finance may not be the most effective way to go.

He favors the bootstrapping approach to business, where you generate the maximum volume of sales and are parsimonious with expenditure, leveraging all you resources until your business is performing successfully. Right through the Startup Garden you will be able to see how to draw on your own strengths rather than having recourse to expensive outside expertise. I know from my own business experience that it is all too easy to assume that there are people out there who know better than you do. Such notions tripped me up more than once, and at considerable cost.

What is clear, Tom points out, is that your best consultant is your own learning. At the beginning, the new entrepreneur tends to identify very closely with the business creation and detachment is difficult. The first lesson is to rejoice in the mistakes you make. They can be priceless teachers. He points out the importance of revisiting your original mission and testing its current validity, checking that your early role remains appropriate, especially in the light of the world outside your own company.

I share with Tom the last thoughts he expresses: “get started”. Reading books―even his―will only teach you so much. Doing it will teach you more. I have met far too many people who say things such as, “my prototype’s not right yet”, “inflation’s running too high”, “the trade cycle hasn’t bottomed out yet”, “my bank’s turned me down”, and many other invalid reasons for not launching. The right time is now. Reading the Startup Garden should not take more than an hour. That is a piece of procrastination I recommend! The quickest way to get a copy is to write an email direct to Tom Ehrenfeld: tomehrenfeld@comcast.com.
